Closes #2301

Problem

The main channel builds Gentle AI with go install …/gentle-ai@<sha> and then required gentle-ai version to end in -<sha12>. That only holds for pseudo-versions. When main HEAD is exactly the commit a release tag points to (today 4acaf4241bea is v4.2.0), Go stamps the tag, the binary prints gentle-ai 4.2.0, and both the wizard's build-gentle-ai-main and gentle-shell upgrade --channel main fail with main-gentle-ai-unverified: the built Gentle AI does not report commit 4acaf4241bea.

What

Following the second direction in the issue, buildMainGentleAi now verifies the module version Go resolves for the commit, instead of guessing its format. After go install, and before the dev-binary override is registered, it checks in the same sealed Go environment and cwd:

  • go list -m -json github.com/gentleman-programming/gentle-ai/v4@<sha> returns a version (a tag or a pseudo-version) whose Origin.Hash is exactly the requested commit.
  • go version -m <binary> embeds that same module version.
  • gentle-ai version reports it, without the leading v.

Any failure still removes the build, never registers the override, and throws main-gentle-ai-unverified naming expected and actual values. Untagged commits behave as before. go list gets its own 2 minute deadline because it may reach the proxy.

File Change
scripts/main-channel.mjs New verification, GENTLE_AI_MODULE export, resolve deadline, header comment
tests/main-channel.test.ts Tag commit accepted; foreign Origin.Hash, embedded version mismatch, probe mismatch and failed go list rejected and not registered; sealed env and cwd for list and version -m
tests/main-channel-upgrade.test.ts Mocked Go answers list and version -m
docs/install-wizard.md build-gentle-ai-main describes the new check

Leaves alone: the release channel, Gentle Shell packing, and the unauthenticated resolveMainCommit call.

Test plan

  • node --experimental-strip-types --test tests/main-channel.test.ts tests/main-channel-upgrade.test.ts: 45 pass, 0 fail. The new cases failed before the change (RED observed).
  • node scripts/check-types.mjs: 0 diagnostics, no regressions.
  • node scripts/run-test-suite.mjs: provider-contract passes. unit-tests and runtime-harness fail on this macOS machine with and without the change (notification pulse/audio, codemode rendering, POSIX bootstrap acquisition, missing quiet built-in tool renderer read). None of the failing tests is a main-channel test or imports scripts/main-channel.mjs. A side-by-side run against unmodified f58010c46c7b at the same path length gave the identical failing set.
  • Real builds with Go 1.26.3 on macOS against an isolated config home: 4acaf4241bea returns 4.2.0 and is registered; fb7eeec0cff8 returns 4.1.2-0.20261015153559-fb7eeec0cff8; a nonexistent SHA fails without registering anything. Unpatched main still reproduces does not report commit 4acaf4241bea.
  • Not tested on Windows.

Maintainer follow-up

Two commits on top of the original change, from review:

  • bc4d5a398 docs: drops a leftover "requires" in the build-gentle-ai-main step of docs/install-wizard.md.
  • 47ad3c49a fix: verifies the build before it replaces a registered one. Previously the new binary was copied into main/gentle-ai/<sha>/ and verified afterwards; any rejection deleted that folder while dev-binary.json still pointed at it, leaving the override broken (dev-binary-override-invalid). This was pre-existing on the version-mismatch path, but the new network-dependent go list made it reachable through a transient proxy failure. Raised by CodeRabbit and reproduced on native Windows by @Mayloparra24. The binary is now copied and verified in .build/<sha>/ and moved into place with rename only after every check passes; staging stays inside .build because the uninstaller's main-channel layout check only accepts commit folders under gentle-ai/.

Follow-up evidence:

  • New tests: a registered build of the same commit survives a failed go list, a mismatched embedded version and a mismatched reported version (failed before the fix, pass after).
  • node --experimental-strip-types --test tests/main-channel.test.ts tests/main-channel-upgrade.test.ts tests/gentle-shell-uninstall*.test.ts: 101 pass, 0 fail.
  • CI on 47ad3c49a: all 9 checks pass, including installer (windows-latest) and test (windows-latest).
  • Known limit: on Windows, the final rename fails while gentle-ai.exe is running, as the previous copyFile did.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Builds now verify that the requested Gentle AI commit matches the module’s recorded source and that the binary embeds and reports the resolved module version. Failed verification leaves the existing registered binary and record unchanged.
    • Version checks compare against the resolved module version rather than requiring the binary’s version string to end with the commit’s first 12 characters.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the installation guide to describe the build verification checks.

When gentle-ai main HEAD is exactly the commit a release tag points to,
Go stamps the tag (v4.2.0) instead of a pseudo-version, so the build was
rejected with main-gentle-ai-unverified even though it was correct.

Verify the build by the module version Go resolves for the commit
instead: go list -m -json must report a version whose Origin.Hash is the
requested commit, go version -m must show the binary embeds that
version, and the gentle-ai version probe must report it. Any mismatch
still removes the build and never registers the dev-binary override.
go list gets a network deadline because it may reach the proxy.

Explanation

Issue #2301 requires the Latest main channel and gentle-shell upgrade --channel main to accept a Gentle AI commit resolved to a release tag. buildMainGentleAi now checks go list -m -json, requires Origin.Hash to equal the requested commit, checks the embedded module version, and checks gentle-ai version. It registers the binary only after all checks pass. Tests cover the tagged commit, mismatch failures, cleanup, and the upgrade path.

Tested PR head 549d0e8ae against its parent f58010c46 on native Windows, using Go 1.26.4 windows/amd64 and Node v26.8.1.

The tagged-commit fix works on Windows. I ran buildMainGentleAi from both snapshots with real Go builds, separate configuration directories, and the function’s sealed environment:

Gentle AI commit Base PR
4acaf4241beae1e0c977c92dfe406a270f8d40de (v4.2.0) Rejected with main-gentle-ai-unverified Built, verified and registered successfully
4b65ee6779fd26c4fa9c22a53feb673f202a4a3b (untagged) Passed Passed

For the tagged case, the real command outputs confirmed:

  • go list -m -json: Version: v4.2.0, with Origin.Hash matching the requested full SHA.
  • go version -m: embedded module version v4.2.0.
  • gentle-ai version: gentle-ai 4.2.0.

The untagged build reported 4.1.2-0.20261015034404-4b65ee6779fd on both snapshots.

I also reproduced the binary-preservation concern raised in review. In a separate sandbox, I registered a copied real binary for the same commit, then injected a failed go list response during the PR verification. The function removed the registered binary directory but left dev-binary.json unchanged. Subsequent override resolution failed with dev-binary-override-invalid. The base also deletes the registered binary on its version-mismatch path, so the unsafe cleanup is pre-existing; the new lookup failure provides another trigger. Verifying in staging before replacing the registered binary would address this.

Verification limits: the focused command below exited 1 on both snapshots, including upgrade-owner-unknown failures, so I am not reporting a green Windows test suite:

node --experimental-strip-types --test tests/main-channel.test.ts tests/main-channel-upgrade.test.ts

These were isolated build/verification tests, not a full global gentle-shell upgrade. No existing installation or active channel was changed.

Thanks for the fix. This confirms the original #2301 tagged-commit failure is addressed on native Windows, with binary preservation still needing attention.

Thanks for this. Asking Go for the resolved module version instead of guessing its format is the right fix, and chaining go list → go version -m → gentle-ai version keeps every failure fail-closed. I ran both main-channel test files on this branch: 45/45 pass.

One change before merging, in docs/install-wizard.md (around line 790): the old "requires" survived the edit, so the sentence now reads "GOFLAGS=-modcacherw), requires asks Go (go list -m -json, ...". Dropping that leftover "requires" fixes it.

Two optional follow-ups, fine here or in a later PR:

  • The rejections for unreadable JSON, an empty Version, and a missing Origin have no tests. The missing Origin case matters most, since it's what happens if the proxy ever serves an .info without it.
  • The sealed-environment test doesn't assert GONOPROXY, even though sealedGoEnvironment sets it.

Also noting that only CodeRabbit ran in CI and this wasn't tested on Windows, so the Windows path is unverified for now.

…he registered one

buildMainGentleAi copied the new binary over `main/gentle-ai/<sha>/` and only
then verified it; any rejection removed that folder while `dev-binary.json`
still pointed at it, so a failed rebuild of an already registered commit (a
rerun wizard step, a lost channel record) left the override broken with
`dev-binary-override-invalid`. The network-dependent `go list` check made that
reachable through a transient proxy failure.

Verify the binary in the `.build` work folder and move it into place only
after every check passes. Rejections no longer touch the registered build.

Thanks @e-Evolution! Reviewed commit 47ad3c49a and found no new actionable regressions or blockers. Verifying the staged binary before replacing the registered one correctly preserves the existing build when verification fails.

Validation: all 101 focused main-channel, upgrade, and uninstall tests passed locally on Linux, and all 9 PR checks are green. A real Go module lookup also confirmed that the tagged commit resolves to v4.2.0 with the expected Origin.Hash.

Scope limitation: I did not run a full Go build or native Windows tests locally; the Windows CI checks passed.
