Implements proposal 0008, the selected scope from the second krm-foyer field report: ask 9, the explicit HTTP validation option of ask 10, and the documentation part of ask 13. Asks 11 and 12 are deferred and not implemented here. Each increment is a separate commit so it can be reviewed on its own.

1. Shared watch opening (ask 9) — fix(gateway)

SharedBackend.Watch held the backend-wide mutex across the upstream Watch call and gave that call a context nobody could cancel. One slow API server therefore stalled every scope, and a browser that left could not free its slot.

  • Each opening is a private entry registered under the lock, opened on its own goroutine without the lock, and settled under it again. The upstream gets a scope-owned context.
  • Waiters wait through their own contexts and are counted. Cancelling one returns at once. The last to leave cancels the opening and unregisters it, without recording a backoff.
  • A successful opening attaches one subscription per remaining waiter at the moment the scope is published, so an upstream watch is never left without an owner. A cancellation racing with success releases the reserved subscription.
  • An abandoned opening that returns late (an upstream that ignores cancellation) is stopped and discarded. It never touches the scope map, the cache, a replacement opening or the backoff.
  • Snapshot framing, cache ownership, overflow recovery, failure classification, backoff and observations are unchanged.

New tests in gateway/shared_open_test.go hold the fake upstream inside Watch on channel barriers rather than sleeps:

  • scope A blocks while scope B opens and delivers its snapshot
  • one opening for 10 concurrent callers
  • cancelling one waiter, and cancelling the last waiter
  • an already-cancelled caller opens nothing
  • a 200-iteration race of cancel vs. success, checking for no orphaned watcher or subscription and balanced observations
  • late results (watcher, failure, cancellation) cannot affect a replacement opening
  • failures reach every waiter, with exactly one backoff for retryable failures and none for terminal ones
  • a stream-level check that a slow opening ends with its caller

Mutation checks confirmed that the tests fail when the cancellation, the release after settle, or the discard of late results is removed.

2. HTTP configuration for timed reauthorization (ask 10) — feat(gateway)!

  • A shared private validateHTTPServing runs at Handler construction and at the start of serveHTTP, before any header, write, deadline, observation, authorization or backend call. It panics on ReauthorizationInterval > 0 with WriteTimeout == 0. The existing negative-timeout rejection is kept.
  • A zero write timeout without timed checks is still valid. Stream/StreamProjection keep timed checks with host-bounded sinks. Options and Gateway comments now say which path needs what.
  • The delivery gate, per-subscriber checks and the existing fail-before-streaming capability checks are unchanged.

Tests

  • New, in gateway/http_config_test.go:
    • Handler construction is rejected, and the valid combinations are accepted.
    • Both direct entry points are rejected. A writer spy, observer and callback counters show that no I/O, observation or callback happened.
    • A direct-serving happy path.
    • A transport-neutral timed revocation with no write timeout.
  • Extended: the real HTTP/1.1 and TLS HTTP/2 blocked-reader test TestBlockedHTTPSubscriberReleasesSharedWatch now asserts two more things:
    • a declared test budget: interval + write timeout + check timeout + a 2s scheduling allowance (6.02s). Observed runs end in about 1.7–2.0s.
    • the stalled request has released its shared subscription when its handler returns, and only the healthy one remains.
    • The budget assumes an authorizer that answers at once. It is a test tolerance, not a production guarantee.
  • Reused unchanged: unsupported-writer rejection, quiet-stream survival, HTTP/1.1 + HTTP/2 isolation, and the authorization/projection denial tests. No test requires a terminal frame to reach a stalled client.

Docs: docs/auth.md now has a single revocation budget. It covers:

  • decision freshness, the timer, gate wait, check timeout, and termination/cleanup
  • why the sum is a planning figure, not an unconditional bound
  • three separate end points: object delivery stopping, the request returning, and the browser receiving the refusal
  • why buffered bytes cannot be recalled

operations.md, adopting.md, gateway/README.md and the shared-host example link to it. The timed-recheck snippets now set both budgets.

3. SubjectAccessReview documentation (ask 13) — docs(kube)

What the adapter sends

  • The subject's user, groups, UID and extras.
  • list then watch, stopping at the first refusal or failure.
  • Group, version, resource, namespace and name.
  • Not sent: label/field selectors and subresource. Target and projection are not attributes either.

This is now written in the exported SubjectAccessReviewAuthorizer comment and in the guide. The guide also says what a host cache must tell apart.

Tests: new tests compare the whole SubjectAccessReviewSpec for a named scope in a group, a selector-carrying scope and an all-namespaces scope. They also check that the first refusal or failure stops the check.

Behaviour: SAR semantics are unchanged.

Docs

The field report is committed as second-fieldreport.md, fixing the filename typo. Its krm-foyer links are now absolute URLs, and it gains a status section. The proposal status is updated.

Review follow-up: docs and comments

A review found no blocking runtime defect, but flagged doc clarity. Addressed in four docs-only commits:

  1. Revocation table (auth.md): gate wait is no longer claimed to be bounded by one WriteTimeout; the row now says it waits for current delivery and WriteTimeout bounds individual writes. The simplified arithmetic is replaced by one instruction to measure total latency.
  2. Adoption (adopting.md): one complete recipe first, with an explicit WriteTimeout and a session-expiry deadline; timed checks and sharing are explicit opt-ins whose authorizer checks session validity; specialist material follows in a reference section.
  3. Saving (saving.md): one recommended sequence; "What the guard rejects" is now "What ValidateMergePatch rejects"; alternatives last; planned work out of the user flow.
  4. SAR wording (authz.go): namespace and name are copied from the scope; selectors are omitted from the authorization request.
  5. Proposals 0007 and 0008 are marked as historical implementation plans and link to current guidance.

The broader pass also reduces the gateway README to an overview and guide links, tightens operations (the kube error mapping moves there) and releasing (steps first, the 0.6.0 incident under recovery), and shortens shared.go/handler.go comments. Those two Go files' changes are comment-only; their code is identical. All relative links and anchors in the repo's Markdown were checked.

Verification

Tested commits: d7140f8 for the implementation; the follow-up docs commits up to 6d78211 were rerun through task fixtures-check, task lint and task test.

Command Result
task fixtures-check pass; no wire or fixture change
task lint 0 issues
task test pass; gateway with -race, kube, examples, client, vue
go test -race -count=1 ./... in gateway/ passed 3× in a row
task release-rehearsal pass
task e2e-wire all green
task e2e-browser 18 passed

Not run:

  • the krm-foyer external reproductions
  • task test-cluster and the sharedstream real-cluster e2e
  • any benchmark

Remaining limitations:

  • Cancellation stops upstream work only if the host Backend honours its context. Otherwise its late result is discarded, but its goroutine runs until the backend returns.
  • The revocation budget is not a universal bound.
  • No trigger API, grouping scheduler, decision cache or exported attribute builder (asks 11 and 12, and the builder from ask 13, are deferred).

BREAKING CHANGE: HTTP hosts using timed reauthorization (Options.ReauthorizationInterval, or Gateway.ReauthorizationInterval with ServeStream/ServeStreamProjection) must set a positive per-operation WriteTimeout; otherwise Handler and the direct serving calls panic. Choose a write-plus-flush budget, count it in the revocation budget, and verify that the mounted middleware supports flushing and write deadlines (gateway.CheckHTTPStreaming in a host test).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Shared-backend streams now open independently by scope, so a slow opening does not delay other scopes. Callers can cancel their own wait, and an opening is cancelled when its last waiting caller leaves.
    • HTTP streaming now rejects configurations that enable timed reauthorization without a positive write timeout.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified reauthorization timing, delivery behavior, revocation budgets, shared-watch operation, and authorization review inputs and order.
    • Expanded guidance on host integration, session handling, saving changes, operations, and release procedures.

SharedBackend.Watch held the backend-wide mutex across the upstream
Watch call, a network round trip of unknown length, and gave that call a
context nobody could cancel. One API server slow to answer one opening
therefore held up every other scope, and a browser that left could not
release its slot.

Each scope's opening is now a private entry registered under the lock,
opened on its own goroutine without it, and settled under it again.
Callers wait on it through their own contexts and are counted; the last
to leave cancels the opening's scope-owned context and unregisters it.
A successful opening attaches one subscription per remaining waiter at
the moment the scope is published, so there is no instant at which an
upstream watch has no owner. An abandoned opening that returns late is
stopped and discarded without touching the scope map, the cache, a
replacement opening or the backoff, and a cancellation caused only by
waiters leaving is never recorded as an upstream failure.

Snapshot framing, cache ownership, overflow recovery, failure
classification, backoff and lifecycle observations are unchanged.

…er HTTP

A timed recheck shares its subscriber's delivery gate, so it waits for
the write in progress. A write to a browser that stopped reading blocks
once the buffers fill, and with the default zero WriteTimeout it never
ends: the recheck, and the revocation it would apply, never ran. A host
that set ReauthorizationInterval alone got an interval that did not hold.

Handler now panics at construction when ReauthorizationInterval is
positive and WriteTimeout is zero, and ServeStream and
ServeStreamProjection apply the same shared validation before any
response I/O, observation, authorization or backend call. A zero write
timeout remains valid without timed checks, and the transport-neutral
Stream and StreamProjection keep timed checks with host-bounded sinks.

The real HTTP/1.1 and TLS HTTP/2 blocked-reader test now asserts a
declared test budget and that the stalled request releases its shared
subscription while the healthy one continues. docs/auth.md documents
the whole revocation budget in one place, and the other guides link to
it.

BREAKING CHANGE: HTTP hosts using timed reauthorization
(Options.ReauthorizationInterval or Gateway.ReauthorizationInterval with
ServeStream/ServeStreamProjection) must set a positive per-operation
WriteTimeout, or Handler and the direct serving calls panic. Choose a
budget per write-plus-flush, count it in the revocation budget, and
verify that the mounted middleware supports flushing and write deadlines
(gateway.CheckHTTPStreaming in a host test).

A host that caches SubjectAccessReviewAuthorizer decisions has to key
them on exactly what the adapter asks, and nothing wrote that down.
The exported comment and the shared-watch authorization guide now state
it: the subject's user, groups, UID and extras; list then watch, stopping
at the first refusal or failure; and the scope's group, version,
resource, namespace and name. Label and field selectors and subresource
are not sent, so a selector does not narrow the authorization question,
and target and projection are not review attributes.

The guide also says what a host cache must distinguish: the complete
subject and request including verb, the authority or target, and that
reuse never bypasses session validity or projection checks.

Tests pin the whole request for a named scope, a selector-carrying scope
and an all-namespaces scope, and that the first refusal or failure stops
the check. The adapter's behaviour is unchanged.

The field report asks for five shared-watch changes (asks 9 to 13);
proposal 0008 selects ask 9, the explicit HTTP validation form of ask 10
and the documentation part of ask 13, and records why asks 11 and 12 are
deferred and what would reopen them. The report's links into krm-foyer
are made absolute, and a status section records what was taken.

Shared-watch hardening

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-scope shared-watch openings
gateway/shared.go, gateway/shared_open_test.go, gateway/README.md, docs/field-reports/second-fieldreport.md, docs/proposals/0008-shared-watch-hardening.md
SharedBackend opens upstream watches asynchronously per scope. Callers share an opening but can cancel independently. The final departing waiter cancels it. Tests cover concurrent scopes, cancellation races, late results, and failure backoff.
Timed reauthorization and HTTP write bounds
gateway/handler.go, gateway/sse.go, gateway/stream.go, gateway/http_config_test.go, gateway/sse_test.go, docs/adopting.md, docs/auth.md, docs/operations.md, docs/proposals/0008-shared-watch-hardening.md
HTTP serving rejects timed reauthorization without a positive WriteTimeout. The guides describe delivery-gate waits, timeout requirements, and limits on the revocation budget. Transport-neutral streams retain host-owned sink bounds.
SubjectAccessReview contract
gateway/kube/authz.go, gateway/kube/authz_test.go, docs/auth.md, docs/proposals/0008-shared-watch-hardening.md
The documentation and tests specify the subject and resource attributes used for list and watch reviews, their order, omitted fields, and stopping after a refusal or error.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6d782

A successful save may leave the editor draft dirty when admission leaves the projected view unchanged. Qualify the guidance and describe guarded reconciliation; this is a bounded documentation issue.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6d782

The examined changes improve cancellation and failure containment while preserving authorization and scope isolation. No introduced security weakness was confirmed. Integration risk remains because timed HTTP reauthorization now requires a positive write timeout, and production routing, upstream identities, and transport behavior were not verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The examined sharing boundary remains one SharedBackend instance and an exact scope. Effective data exposure still depends on the host-selected upstream identity and subscriber authorization and projection policies; production credential authority was not established by the available evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The redirect-exposure candidate is countered by the existing Kubernetes HTTP client helper, which refuses redirects, and by the backend passing that returned client to the dynamic client. It is not retained as a PR architecture concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Direct serving remains a lower-level, host-owned API accepting a supplied principal and scope. It still performs stream authorization and projection selection. The HTTP wrapper additionally requires write-deadline support when a positive timeout is configured and installs deadlines around delivery.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Caller abandonment does not record backoff. Current opening failures are shared with waiting callers and recorded once; only nonterminal UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE failures enter retry backoff. This separates subscriber cancellation from upstream failure and prevents abandoned late results from penalizing replacement openings.

… from the scope

An empty namespace also means a cluster-scoped resource, and a named scope still carries its name, so the adapter comment no longer reads an empty namespace as every namespace or the omitted selector as a whole-collection review. It says namespace and name are copied from the scope, and selectors are omitted from the authorization request.

Keep the invariants, lock ownership and cancellation semantics; drop narratives about earlier implementations and emphatic restatements of the security rationale, which docs/auth.md carries. Comment-only: the code is unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both still read as active instructions. Their status now says they are historical implementation plans, not adopter guidance, says what "current" referred to in 0007, and links the guides that are current.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Each user-facing guide now gives the recommended action, the
constraints needed to use it safely, and links to deeper reference.

- adopting: lead with one complete host and browser recipe, with an
explicit WriteTimeout and a session-expiry deadline; timed
reauthorization and sharing are explicit opt-ins whose authorizer
checks current session validity; error inspection, AnyResource,
path prefixes, bearer tokens and keyed lists move to a reference
  section after it.
- auth: the revocation table no longer claims one WriteTimeout bounds
gate waiting (it bounds individual writes); drop the simplified
arithmetic for one instruction to measure; remove wiring duplicated
from adopting and the rehearsal details.
- saving: one sequence (capture, conditional PATCH, 204 and watch echo,
guarded GET on 409), response-object alternatives last, planned work
out of the user flow, and "What the guard rejects" renamed to "What
  ValidateMergePatch rejects".
- gateway README: a package overview, a minimal example and guide links.
- operations: controls, alerts and troubleshooting, including the kube
error mapping that previously lived only in the gateway README.
- releasing: lead with the release steps; the 0.6.0 incident moves into
  the recovery section.

Inbound anchors are preserved or updated.

The gateway suppresses an update whose projected view is unchanged, so a write that leaves it unchanged (an admission webhook restoring a patched field, say) has no echo. Say so, and point to the guarded projected GET for that case. Raised by CodeRabbit.
