krm-stream 0.7.0

krm-stream 0.7.0 (#50) took asks 9, 10 and 13 from our shared-watch requests. Asks 11 and 12 are deferred.

Ask What changes here
9: open shared watches outside the backend-wide lock The workaround that opened the watch on the first Next is removed (sharedUpstream.Watch is now a plain wrapper that counts the watch). TestAStuckOpeningHoldsUpNoOtherScope stays as a regression guard: it fails against 0.6.0, and now fails cleanly instead of hanging.
10: require a write timeout with timed rechecks No behaviour change: -stream-write-timeout was already required to be positive. New TestStreamsCanFlushAndSetWriteDeadlines runs gateway.CheckHTTPStreaming through the real route stack over HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2, as the release notes recommend.
13: document the review attributes The decision cache's key comment now cites krm-stream's documented contract. The guard test also checks that no subresource is sent.

The decision cache stays, since ask 12 is deferred. The hello example vendors the 0.7.0 browser bundle, which differs only in its version string.

One log line per refusal

This is the roadmap item "one log line per refusal". Every refusal now logs one "msg":"refused" line with:

  • by: krm-foyer or kubernetes
  • user: as the issuer named them (email, else subject), once the request has a session
  • route, method, path (never the query) and the reason

It covers:

  • krm-foyer's own interruptions below 500
  • the API server's 401, 403, 409 and 422 on /k8s
  • a stream's FORBIDDEN, UNAUTHENTICATED and SCOPE_INVALID, with the scope asked for. SCOPE_INVALID counts as Kubernetes' refusal only when the API server answered 404.

An interruption from 500 is a failure, not a refusal, and stays "msg":"interruption". What the API server wrote is never logged. The rule is in design.md.

Tests

  • task verify is green, including e2e.
  • Each new test was checked against a deliberately broken build, and each one failed:
    • removing the upstream refusal line;
    • dropping the user from post-admission interruptions;
    • labelling every stream refusal as krm-foyer's;
    • ignoring the API status on SCOPE_INVALID;
    • a route wrapper that hides Flusher;
    • krm-stream 0.6.0 with the ask 9 workaround removed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Streaming connections now support write deadlines and better isolate slow watch openings.
  • Improvements
    • Refusal logs now identify the source, request route, method, and known user. API response bodies are not included in these logs.
    • Authentication records the session email as the user identity when available, falling back to the session subject.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance clarifies refusal and interruption logging, watch revocation behavior, and streaming updates.

…ith its user

krm-stream 0.7.0 took asks 9, 10 and 13 of docs/investigations/krm-stream-shared-watches.md.

- Ask 9: a shared watch opens outside the gateway's backend-wide lock, under a context its
  waiting streams share. krm-foyer's workaround, which opened it on the first Next, is
  gone; TestAStuckOpeningHoldsUpNoOtherScope stays, fails against 0.6.0, and now fails
  rather than hangs.
- Ask 10: krm-stream refuses timed rechecks without a write timeout. krm-foyer always set
  one; a server test checks that every route in front of a stream lets it flush and set
  write deadlines, over HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2.
- Ask 13: the decision cache's key cites the review attributes krm-stream now documents,
  and the guard test also checks the subresource.

The hello example vendors the 0.7.0 browser bundle, which differs only in its version.

Every refusal is now one "refused" log line with by (krm-foyer or kubernetes), the user as
the issuer named them, route, method, path and reason: krm-foyer's interruptions below
500, the API server's 401, 403, 409 and 422 on /k8s, and a stream's FORBIDDEN,
UNAUTHENTICATED and SCOPE_INVALID with the scope. An interruption from 500 stays an
"interruption" line.

The repository upgrades krm-stream dependencies and the browser bundle to 0.7.0. Shared-watch handling now opens watches immediately. Credentials carry user identity, and admission, proxy, and stream paths record structured refusal logs.

Changes

krm-stream Upgrade and Refusal Logging

Layer / File(s) Summary
krm-stream 0.7.0 and shared watches
Taskfile.yml, go.mod, examples/hello/web/krm-stream.js, internal/stream/shared.go, internal/stream/shared_test.go, internal/server/server_test.go, docs/investigations/krm-stream-shared-watches.md, docs/roadmap.md, docs/watches.md
The krm-stream pins move to 0.7.0. Shared watches now open when Watch is called, and the returned watcher delegates Next and stops the underlying watcher once. Tests cover watch behavior and streaming writers. Documentation records related 0.7.0 updates.
Credential identity and admission logging
internal/auth/auth.go, internal/auth/credentials_test.go, internal/gate/gate.go, docs/design.md, docs/roadmap.md
Credentials now include the session email or, if absent, the subject. Admission logs refusal source, user when known, method, query-free path, route, and refusal attributes.
Proxy and upstream refusal handling
internal/proxy/proxy.go, internal/proxy/interruption_test.go, internal/proxy/lifecycle_test.go, internal/proxy/proxy_test.go
Selected Kubernetes response statuses are recorded as refusals. upstreamError returns an interruption or nil, and the proxy sends returned interruptions through admission. Tests check log fields and ensure response bodies are not logged.
Stream diagnostic refusal logging
internal/stream/stream.go, internal/stream/stream_test.go, internal/stream/shared_test.go
Stream diagnostics record selected refusal codes through admission, with attribution to Kubernetes or Foyer. Tests check refusal source, user, route, and scope fields.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 59529

The change is mergeable. Fix the revocation-bound documentation, which operators could rely on, and the proxy double-logging of oversized refusal responses. Neither affects authorization outcomes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 59529

The inspected changes preserve per-user authorization and keep bearer tokens, queries and response bodies out of refusal logs. Shared-watch opening and cleanup have explicit cancellation and recovery controls. Some timed-reauthorization behavior and deployment-specific logging protections remain unverified, so the assessment is not minimal.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant disclosure boundary is each user's access to objects fetched under the shared identity in the configured cluster. The new logging flow separately exposes admitted identity and requested resource metadata to log readers; deployment-specific log access and retention were not supplied.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The pinned stream implementation authorizes the principal before resolving the backend and opening a watch. Local shared-stream tests assert that a denied user receives FORBIDDEN without shared-object delivery, providing counterevidence to an eager-opening authorization bypass.
  • observed — The inspected refusal callers supply structured status, code and scope metadata rather than upstream error text or response bodies. The request logger removes the query, and the forwarded bearer token is not passed to it. APIStatus-backed SCOPE_INVALID originates from the adapter's NotFound classification in the inspected dependency path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing documentation promises a 60-second shared-stream revocation total. The newly linked v0.7.0 budget explicitly states that total delivery-gate waiting is not bounded by individual write deadlines. This is an unsupported existing security guarantee, not evidence that this PR introduced or worsened continued unauthorized delivery.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Align the revocation guarantee with the dependency's complete budget. If a strict maximum is required, establish a bounded timer-to-delivery-gate transition and termination path rather than treating one write timeout as the entire gate-wait bound.

Correct the held-back HTML description.

This sentence says the page shows the HTML source as escaped text. The interruption table at Line 186 says the page currently shows the content type and that escaped response text is future work. Describe the current behavior instead.

Correct the revocation-budget comparison.

The linked v0.7.0 budget includes a delivery-gate wait that has no overall bound. WriteTimeout bounds each HTTP write, not that entire wait. The 60-second total in the table above therefore does not cover the same parts. Remove the fixed upper-bound claim or state its additional assumptions so operators do not rely on an unsupported revocation deadline. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check the declared size before logging the upstream refusal.

When checkResponse accepts a selected refusal status with a declared body larger than p.maxBytes, a.Refused logs it as a Kubernetes refusal before limitBytes returns a 502 interruption. The reverse-proxy error handler then sends that interruption through a.Interrupt, producing a second log for the same request. Call limitBytes first and log the refusal only when it returns nil.
