Stacked on #424, which found the race; merge #424 first. Builds docs/design/applier-echoes.md as one change.

The race

GitOps Reverser asked an applier to apply commit A. The applier's own write came back through the watch and was mirrored as a pending write that changed nothing. A Git-side push B then landed, the worker's push was rejected, and the replay planned that write from the live object (still A) onto B. The resulting commit reverted B, in Git and then on the cluster. Argo CD failed the push-race spec every time; Flux passed only when its echo landed after the push cooldown.

Root cause: ordering. A pending write carried a picture of the cluster, and every replay re-planned that picture onto whatever tip the remote had.

What changes

Change
F1 In an applier's apply window, a write by the applier's managers alone to an object nobody edited is the apply landing, and is not mirrored. The lower bound is the earliest send of every window still open or carried. Over a recorded edit, the applier's write alone, in the edit's second or later, is withheld and a Repair follows; an older applier entry is the API's undo, mirrored. With no window open, the applier's write is mirrored and counted late.
F2 A pending write carries the actions its plan decided on its first tree. An unchanged object is no action, and a write with no action left settles at once. A resync decides its upserts and its sweep's deletes once; a replay applies exactly those and never sweeps again, so a Git-side addition survives (even under prune.mode: Always). A save (CommitRequest) keeps every object and its push-decided outcome.
F3 The worker keeps an apply epoch and a Git-is-ahead flag, which the watch side reads when a snapshot's collection starts. A snapshot collected while Git was ahead, across an apply, or arriving while Git is ahead is discarded and asked for again once Git is no longer ahead; so is one whose own fetch finds a foreign commit. No snapshot is parked.
F4 An object another applier owns (Flux owner labels, or Argo CD's tracking annotation, read from the raw object) is not mirrored into a folder a trigger applies; on a resync it is neither upserted nor swept.
S1 Flush, then apply. When an apply comes due, the open window is closed and the flush mark taken; edits decided after the mark are recorded in the apply window; the writes up to the mark are published at once, cooldown or not; the attempt is sent for that tip. The flush covers the sibling workers (other GitProviders on the same repository and branch): each closes its window and publishes up to its own mark, and the attempt waits for them; workers share what they observe of the branch, so the tip holds their writes. The quiet branch is gone. A registered save, a parent recovery and a dirty checkout still hold an apply back.
S2 CatchUp only adopts (an API create in an applier's folder, or a resync adding an object to Git) and converges (once at start, once when a GitTarget first names the trigger; a converge of the commit the applier last applied asks nothing). The same for Flux and Argo CD, decided in the worker. No apply goes out before every collection of every covered GitTarget has a settled initial snapshot (tracked per collection), and a GitTarget with no planned collection holds its applier. A push of the worker's own asks nothing; an empty tip asks nothing.

A GitTarget that names a trigger gets its folder created by its resync, bootstrap files and all, even with no object to write: Argo CD retries a sync of a missing path for minutes, and Flux fails it. A Flux GitRepository that fetched another commit than the one asked for is a hint to look at the remote, as a receiver delivery is.

Breaking (both fields shipped in 0.53.0)

  • FluxTrigger.spec.quietPeriod is removed. Server-side apply and strict field validation reject a manifest that sets it; a client with validation off drops it silently.
  • FluxTrigger.status.source.prefetch, and the whole source prefetch, are removed.
  • An Argo CD Application is now caught up (adopt, converge) like a Kustomization. This reverses two feat!: GitOps Reverser decides when Flux or Argo CD applies a folder #419 decisions.
  • The clients' Current outcome (and ApplyCurrent) is gone: the worker decides what needs no apply.

New metrics

  • apply_echoes_total{outcome=not_mirrored|late}
  • apply_ownership_conflicts_total
  • stale_snapshots_total{outcome=discarded|used}
  • git_commit_windows_total{close_reason="apply_due"}

Decided while building (twelve departures from the plan)

All twelve are recorded in the design doc's "Decided while building". In short:

  1. Siblings do not count for F3: Git-ahead and the epoch are per worker.
  2. F3 holds a GitTarget's snapshots for 5 minutes at most; then a fresh one is asked for and used, counted used.
  3. A collection's initial snapshot is exempt from F3 (otherwise F3 and S2's barrier wait on each other). It is tracked per collection on the watch side: a snapshot settles when applied, refused or failed.
  4. The prefetch is removed.
  5. An edit carried from the previous apply window guards only applier writes made before the next send (it caused spurious Repairs).
  6. A held GitTarget is asked for a fresh snapshot when the 5 minutes run out, on a timer.
  7. The applier's write alone in the same second as a recorded edit is withheld, not mirrored as ambiguous; the cost is a same-second undo (C4).
  8. A folder an applier applies is created by its resync before it is applied.
  9. A GitTarget with no planned collection has not settled its initial snapshots.
  10. A Flux source that fetched another commit is a hint to look at the remote.
  11. There is no heal resync: nothing produced one, so the flag and its path are removed.
  12. The flush covers the sibling workers, and workers share their observations (found in review: a sibling's unpublished edit was reverted and its revert mirrored).

E9 pushes its Git-side change to an object the GitTarget does not watch: an initial snapshot is the startup baseline, so a Git-side change to a watched object made while the operator was down is the C2 case.

Also in this PR

  • A review fix: a failed listing of the branch's appliers kept its retry timer (it was disarmed by the next arming).
  • Code nothing reaches is removed or moved to tests (the heal path; four planner wrappers only tests call).
  • Every current-behavior doc was reviewed against the code, docs/architecture.md and docs/configuration.md in full, plus the specs and the design docs of the areas this rewrote; stale API and code comments were corrected with them.

Tests

  • Unit / worker-level, on a real Git server where Git is involved: F1 (the earliest-send bound, a delayed echo, late, the same-second tie, carried edits), F2 (unchanged objects, resync replay under Always, a tightened prune mode), F3 (collected across an apply, while ahead, arriving while ahead, the per-collection exemption, the bound and its timer), F4, S1 (publish before send; record and withhold after the mark; a new mark starts the edits over; a sibling's unpublished edit is in the commit applied), S2 (startup converge at the tip, adopt at the tip for both appliers, the barrier, an empty tip, first naming, a resync that adds an object adopts it), the folder bootstrap, the Flux source hint, and the listing retry.
  • e2e, Flux and Argo CD, bi-directional corner: E1 (push race, no longer Pending), E2, E3, E5 to E8, E10 to E12 (bi_directional_echoes_e2e_test.go), E9 (bi_directional_restart_e2e_test.go, Serial), E13 (timing: "API create → adopted"). The corner runs on 4 procs with a 35m timeout. Manager specs that described the old behavior (the converge on naming, no push for a no-op write) are updated.

Validation

task lint and task test pass; unit coverage is 80.1% against a baseline of 80.2%, inside the tolerance. Every CI leg passed on c12f797 (full-manager, full-core, bi-directional, image-refresh, quickstart-install, source-cluster); the later commits change only comments, flag help text, CRD descriptions and docs. Locally, the bi-directional corner passed 42/42 and the manager leg 86/86.

BEGIN_COMMIT_OVERRIDE
feat!: recognize the applier's own writes, and flush before applying (#425)

BREAKING CHANGE: FluxTrigger spec.quietPeriod and status.source.prefetch are removed. An apply no longer waits for a quiet branch: the branch worker publishes what is pending, then applies. Server-side apply and kubectl's strict field validation reject a manifest that still sets spec.quietPeriod; a client with field validation off drops the field without an error. Remove spec.quietPeriod from FluxTrigger manifests before upgrading.

…ting

The bi-directional timing spec found a race: an applier's write back
through the watch is mirrored as a pending write, and when a Git-side push
lands before it is published, replay re-plans it onto the push and reverts
it, in Git and then on the cluster. docs/design/applier-echoes.md finds the
root cause (a stale decision is ordered after the push, while an API edit
is a later decision and wins) and proposes small changes to what is built:

- F1: the applier's own write in the apply window is not mirrored;
- F2: a write that changes nothing is dropped, never replayed;
- F3: a resync waits while Git is ahead of the cluster;
- S1: flush, then apply, instead of waiting for a quiet branch;
- S2: CatchUp only to adopt API-created objects and to converge, the same
for Flux and Argo CD, decided in the branch worker; quietPeriod goes.

It records the decisions, the collisions left open with their interval
and recovery, a review's seven points, and a code plan of what is removed,
changed and kept.

The regression spec bi_directional_push_race_e2e_test.go is committed as
Pending: Argo CD fails it today in round 0. The change that builds F1 and
F2 removes Pending.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR replaces quiet-branch scheduling with flush-based apply coordination. It adds deterministic action replay, applier ownership and echo handling, stale-snapshot invalidation, initial-snapshot barriers, Flux and Argo CD catch-up behavior, telemetry, end-to-end tests, and related documentation. It also adds an Argo CD UI attribution investigation.

Changes: Applier echo prevention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Flush-based apply and echo handling
internal/git/apply_trigger.go, internal/git/apply_window.go, internal/git/branch_worker.go, internal/git/apply_sibling_flush.go
Apply requests flush eligible writes through a decision mark. Apply windows classify applier writes, suppress confirmed echoes, coordinate sibling workers, and retain later edits for repair.
Decided-action replay
internal/git/commit_executor.go, internal/git/plan_flush.go, internal/git/resync_flush.go, internal/git/types.go
Pending event and resync writes retain actions decided on the original tree. Replay applies those actions without replanning. Unchanged writes settle without content.
Snapshot validity and ownership
internal/git/apply_epoch.go, internal/git/apply_ownership.go, internal/watch/*, internal/git/worker_manager.go, cmd/main.go
Workers discard stale snapshots, wait for initial snapshot settlement, and exclude objects owned by another applier from mirroring and pruning.
Validation and observability
internal/git/*_test.go, test/e2e/*, internal/telemetry/*
Tests cover replay, echoes, ownership, stale snapshots, catch-up, restart behavior, and Flux and Argo CD races. New counters record echoes, ownership conflicts, and stale snapshots.
API, configuration, and documentation updates
api/v1alpha3/*, config/*, docs/*, internal/applier/*, internal/controller/*
Quiet-period and prefetch contracts are removed. Documentation describes flush-based applies, catch-up, ownership, replay, and snapshot handling.

When several GitProviders share one repository branch but apply to different clusters, a commit pushed by one can leave another cluster's Flux or Argo CD applier stale. A failed recovery listing can also stop retrying until an unrelated event occurs. Resolve these coordination gaps before merging.

… e2e scenarios

The plan now closes each way a stale picture of an object can reach a commit:

- F1 bounds the applier's write by the earliest send of every window still
open or carried, so a delayed echo of an earlier attempt is still an echo.
It keeps today's comparison with a recorded edit (late apply, tie, undo).
- F2 works per object: an unchanged object is dropped from its write, so
one inside a changed batch is never replayed either. A save keeps its
  record apart from its objects.
- F3 never parks a snapshot. A resync taken while Git is ahead of the
cluster, or whose own fetch finds a foreign commit, is discarded and
re-requested after the apply; the parked heals go with it.
- S1 records edits from the flush mark, so an edit between the flush and
the send is withheld over and repaired.
- S2 adopts on an observed API create (a delete and recreate under the same
name included), never skipped because the applier is already at the tip.
The startup converge waits for every initial snapshot to be published.
Another applier's object in a triggered folder is warned about, not
  adopted.

It also restores the prune-after-re-add collision, narrows P1 to the apply
window, adds P4 to P6, and lists eleven end-to-end scenarios (adopt then
prune, recreate then prune, restart with edits made while down, and more)
for both appliers. The document describes the plan only, with no history.

…plier-echo gaps

- F2: a pending write carries the actions decided once on its tree. An
unchanged object is no action. A resync decides its upserts and its
sweep's deletes once, so a replay never sweeps again and a Git-side
addition survives it. A save is never trimmed: it keeps its objects and
its push-decided outcome, as the CommitRequest contract says.
- F3: an apply epoch, raised at every send and completion, and a "Git is
ahead" flag, both read when a snapshot's collection starts. A snapshot
collected while Git was ahead, or across an apply, is discarded and
  re-requested.
- F4: an object another applier owns is not mirrored into a triggered
folder, on the live path and in resyncs, and its document is not swept.
- S1: the open commit window closes before the flush mark is taken, so its
edits are published before the send.
- S2: no apply of any reason before every initial snapshot of the covered
  GitTargets is published.

The promises name their exceptions; C7 (same-second tie) and C8 (sweep
against a Git-side edit) join the collisions; the e2e scenarios grow to
thirteen, including a Git-side addition surviving a resync, a restart with
work made while down across every reason, and a save across a Git-side
change.

State the delete-specific match and its scope.

The index uses a UID-keyed delete match for ordinary removals, but this is separate from the exact (uid, resourceVersion) match used for updates. The lookup also requires AuditRoute and GroupResource context. Update this sentence so it does not describe the UID as the complete join key.

Suggested wording
-2. **Delete resource.** The tree node `res` already has the resource's uid. A resource Event with
- that uid is enough, since a delete is matched by uid.
+2. **Delete resource.** The tree node `res` already has the resource's uid. A resource Event with
+ that uid can use the delete-specific UID match when the `AuditRoute` and `GroupResource`
+ context are known. This is separate from the exact `(uid, resourceVersion)` match used for
+ updates.

If this proposal also covers filtered removals, UID-only evidence is not sufficient for those.

A pending write is planned once, on the tree it is first committed on, and
from then on carries what that plan decided (docs/design/applier-echoes.md,
F2):

- A window or atomic write keeps only the events whose plan changed the
tree. An unchanged object is no action, and a write with no action left
settles at once: it is neither retained nor pushed, so a replay onto a
newer tip can never plan it again and revert what that tip changed.
- A resync uses its snapshot's membership once, to decide the upserts that
changed the tree and the documents its sweep removed. A replay applies
exactly those, each delete only while the prune mode still sweeps, and
never runs the sweep again, so a Git-side addition survives it.
- A save (a write carrying a CommitRequest) keeps every object it captured,
  and its outcome stays push-decided.

Tests that used a no-op live write to reach the remote now use a no-op save,
which still does. New real-server tests pin the replay of a window and of a
resync under prune.mode: Always.

In an applier's apply window, a write by the applier's managers alone to an
object nobody edited is the apply itself landing: its content is the commit's,
which Git holds. It is no longer mirrored (docs/design/applier-echoes.md, F1).
Mirrored, it became a pending write planned from the live object, and a
replay onto a newer tip reverted that tip's change.

- The lower bound is the earliest send of every window still open or
carried, so a delayed echo of the attempt before, inside its grace, is
still that apply. An applier entry older than that bound is an earlier
apply's, left newest by an undo, and is an edit.
- With an edit recorded, the comparison is unchanged: newer is withheld with
a Repair, the same second is ambiguous, older is the undo.
- With no window open, the applier's managers alone are mirrored as an edit
  and counted late (C3).

New counter apply_echoes_total{outcome=not_mirrored|late}, and one line per
window: "Observed the applier's apply".

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A resync mirrors a snapshot of live state, and while Git is ahead of the
cluster that snapshot holds the old state of every object the unapplied
commit changes (docs/design/applier-echoes.md, F3).

- The branch worker keeps an apply epoch, raised at every send and every end
of an attempt, and a Git-is-ahead flag: a ForeignCommit, Repair or Refusal
pending, or an attempt out. The watch side reads both when a snapshot's
collection starts, and the ResyncRequest carries them.
- A snapshot collected while Git was ahead, across an epoch change, or
arriving while Git is ahead is discarded (ErrResyncDiscarded, not a
failure), and a fresh one of its GitTarget is asked for once Git is no
longer ahead. So is one whose own fetch finds a commit the worker did not
  push.
- No snapshot is parked any more: a heal that would close a commit window is
discarded and asked for again once the window is idle. The deferred heals
  are gone.
- A branch with no trigger never waits. A GitTarget's snapshots are exempt
until its initial snapshots are published (latched per incarnation): they
are the startup baseline, and S2 holds every apply until they are in Git,
so holding them would deadlock. A GitTarget held for five minutes uses the
  next snapshot anyway.

New counter stale_snapshots_total{outcome=discarded|used}.

A folder a trigger applies belongs to that trigger's applier
(docs/design/applier-echoes.md, F4). An object another Kustomization or
Application applies, mirrored into it, would be applied by this applier too,
and two appliers applying one object fight each other.

- The watch side reads the owner from the raw object, before sanitize strips
it: Flux's owner labels, or Argo CD's tracking annotation (with the
<namespace>_<name> form of an Application outside Argo CD's namespace). It
stamps it on the live event and on each snapshot entry.
- The worker compares it with the applier of the event's GitTarget's
trigger. Another applier's object is excluded: a live event is not
mirrored, and a snapshot entry is neither upserted nor swept, even under
  prune.mode: Always.
- A folder with no trigger excludes nothing, and an object owned by nobody,
or by the folder's own applier, is mirrored as before.

New counter apply_ownership_conflicts_total, and one log line per object.

An attempt went out only on a quiet branch: no open window and no pending
writes, here or on any sibling worker. A user who kept editing held a
Git-side change back for as long as they typed. It is replaced by a flush
(docs/design/applier-echoes.md, S1):

1. When an apply comes due, the open commit window is closed, so its edits
   become a decided write.
2. The worker takes the flush mark: the last write decided so far.
3. From the mark, the due applier's next apply window records edits, before
the attempt is sent: an apply that overwrites one is withheld over, and a
   Repair puts it back.
4. The writes up to the mark are published at once, push cooldown or not.
Writes decided after it do not hold the send.
5. The attempt is sent for the tip that publication produced, and is stale
   only when the tip moved.

A registered CommitRequest, a parent recovery and a dirty checkout still hold
an apply. The quiet branch, the busy and sibling-quietness gates
(branchQuiet, workWaiting, the busy half of decisionHolds, othersBusy,
siblingBusy, publishWriteBusy, busyWriting) and the worker's source prefetch,
which only overlapped the wait, are gone; the source-group claims stay. A
window an apply closes is counted as commit_windows_closed{reason=apply_due}.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The prefetch fetched a push somebody else made into a shared GitRepository
while the branch was busy, so its artifact was ready once the branch went
quiet. With flush-then-apply (S1) there is no such wait: with pending writes
the apply asks for the replayed tip, not the push, and with none it is sent
at once and fetches for itself. Prefetching never shortens the flush, so it
goes: the worker's prefetch, ApplyRequester.PrefetchSource, the dispatcher's
prefetch checks, Flux.Prefetch, ApplyTrigger.Prefetches, and FluxTrigger
status.source.prefetch. status.source.otherConsumers stays, information only.

BREAKING CHANGE: FluxTrigger status.source.prefetch is removed.

…Argo CD

With the flush guarding the cluster, an apply after every push of the
worker's own protects nothing. What is left is ownership: an applier prunes
only what it applied (docs/design/applier-echoes.md, S2).

- Adopt: a CatchUp is pending for an applier when the worker observes an API
create in a folder it applies (an ADDED event whose newest managers are not
an applier's, and that no other applier owns), and when a resync adds an
object to Git. It is never skipped as already applied: re-applying the same
commit is what stamps the owner labels or the tracking annotation.
- Converge: a CatchUp is pending once when the worker starts, and once when a
GitTarget first names the trigger. The worker keeps, per applier, the
revision the last succeeded operation applied (status.operation, recovered
on restart), and a converge of it asks nothing.
- Both appliers alike: an Argo CD Application now converges and adopts too.
- No applier is asked for anything, for any reason, before every initial
snapshot of every GitTarget it covers is published.
- A push of the worker's own leaves nothing pending, and an empty tip asks
nothing: the reason waits for a commit to apply.

The clients' OutcomeCurrent paths (and ApplyCurrent) go: the worker decides
what needs no apply. ApplierRef.CatchesUp, the quiet period and quietSince go.

BREAKING CHANGE: FluxTrigger spec.quietPeriod is removed; a manifest that
sets it is refused by the API server.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A suspended target's resync returned before deciding its actions, so
retained() read it as undecided and kept it: retained, charged, pushed, and
logged as committed. It now records an empty decision, so it settles at once.

The scenarios of docs/design/applier-echoes.md, each for both appliers, on a
folder GitOps Reverser mirrors and the applier applies:

- E1: the push race runs (Pending removed).
- E2, E3: an object the API created, or deleted and created again, is
adopted, so a Git-side delete prunes it and no resync writes it back.
- E5: an edit made during an apply is in Git and back on the cluster.
- E6: a Git-side push is applied while edits keep arriving, and every edit
ends in Git and on the cluster.
- E7: a Git-side push survives a resync forced before its apply finishes.
- E8: a Git-side addition survives a resync under prune.mode: Always.
- E9: work made while the operator was down is mirrored before anything is
applied, a Git-side change it does not watch is applied, and the new object
is adopted (Serial: it scales the controller).
- E10: an API edit asks for no apply; it replaces the Flux spec that asked
  only on a quiet branch.
- E11: another applier's object is neither mirrored nor adopted.
- E12: a save made across a Git-side change resolves from the push.
- E13: the timing specs time "API create -> adopted" for both appliers.

The Argo CD spec now expects the converge naming the Application leaves. The
corner runs on four procs with a 35m timeout.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every document the applier-echoes plan lists now describes the built system:

- definitions.md: the quiet branch goes; flush (and its mark), echo, adopt,
converge and the apply epoch come in.
- design/apply-trigger.md: the apply window gains F1 and the flush mark, the
quiet-branch rule becomes flush-then-apply, F3 and F4 join, CatchUp is
adopt and converge for both appliers (the two reversed decisions stated),
and prefetch and quietPeriod are gone.
- design/applier-echoes.md: built; the open decisions are recorded as the
decisions taken, with the F3 exemption for initial snapshots, the
five-minute bound, and the prefetch removal.
- The pending-writes design and the mark-and-sweep spec: a write carries
actions decided once, and a replay never sweeps again.
- interpreting-metrics.md: apply_echoes_total, apply_ownership_conflicts_total
  and stale_snapshots_total; the apply_due close reason; apply_requests_total
without the quiet-branch and Argo CD caveats.
- The bi-directional guides, architecture, api-first publication,
configuration and UPGRADING, and the support-boundary page.

Stale code comments and the TestApplyDebt names (a banned word) are fixed
with them.

@sunib sunib changed the title docs(design): recognize the applier's own writes, and apply while editing feat!: recognize the applier's own writes, and flush before applying Oct 20, 2026
sunib and others added 6 commits October 20, 2026 13:22
An edit carried from the previous apply window withheld the next
attempt's own write of the same object, so a legitimate apply of a
commit that already held the edit was judged a revert and drew a
spurious Repair. One attempt is out at a time, so the earlier apply
wrote before the next one was sent; a write since is the new attempt's
apply of a commit holding every edit published before it (S1). A
carried edit now guards only an applier write timestamped before the
current window's send.

…d limit

The worker latched a GitTarget's initial snapshots once every stream it
knew of was Streaming. A GitTarget declared before its WatchRule's
collection was planned counted as done with nothing to deliver, so the
real initial snapshot was judged by F3 and discarded, and with Git
still ahead (a converge sync of a path that did not exist yet never
completed) it was never asked for again: the GitTarget waited for its
first revision for good.

The watch side now records, per GitTarget, the collections the worker
applied a snapshot of (marked when the resync drains successfully,
forgotten on teardown). A snapshot of a collection with none applied
is Initial: the worker uses it whatever its appliers are doing. The
barrier S2 waits for is every planned collection applied and no resync
of the GitTarget queued or unpublished; the worker-side latch is gone.

A GitTarget whose snapshots are held for snapshotHoldLimit is now asked
for a fresh one then, on the applier timer, rather than only when the
next stale snapshot happens to arrive.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Pushing the other applier's folder to the same repository is itself a
foreign commit for the trigger's applier, so its token moved and the
spec read that as an adoption. Capture the operation once that push is
applied, and only then hold that nothing follows.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The plan counts a refused or failed initial snapshot as settled, so it
holds no applier back. The per-collection tracking only marked a
snapshot the worker applied, so a GitTarget whose path was refused, or
whose initial resync failed or timed out, held every apply of its
applier for good. A snapshot now settles its collection unless it was
discarded or superseded: those are replaced by another one that
settles.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Decided while building, 3, now says the exemption is tracked per
collection on the watch side and why the per-GitTarget latch failed;
5 and 6 record that a carried edit guards only writes made before the
next send, and that a held GitTarget is asked again at the 5-minute
limit. definitions.md and apply-trigger.md follow.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
An applier write by its own managers alone, in the same second as an
edit recorded in the apply window, was mirrored as ambiguous. Events
arrive in resourceVersion order, so the edit, recorded first, was
written first, and the write after it is the apply over the edit:
mirrored, it reverted the edit in Git and on the cluster (E6, Flux
applying within the second of an API edit). It is now withheld, and a
Repair follows. The cost is an undo in that second whose newest entry
is the applier's from that second: it is withheld too, and the Repair
puts the edit back (C4). A tie with another manager is still mirrored.

Update the OnRefusal field comment to describe the flush.

This PR changed Reapply so the request goes out after a flush. The OnRefusal comment still says the request waits until "the branch holds no open window and no pending writes". That is the old quiet-branch rule.

The updated ApplyTriggerRef comment, docs/configuration.md and docs/UPGRADING.md now say "after a flush". The generated CRD description (config/crd/bases/configbutler.ai_gittargets.yaml, around lines 348-350) copies this comment. As a result, kubectl explain shows users the old behavior.

Naming a trigger converges its applier once the GitTarget's initial
snapshots are in Git. A GitTarget nothing had been mirrored into yet has
no folder at the tip, so Argo CD was asked to sync a missing path: it
retried "failed to get repo objects" for minutes, in Running, which
held every later apply of that Application. Flux fails such a path.

A resync of a GitTarget that names a trigger, into a folder HEAD's tree
does not hold, now commits the folder's bootstrap files (README.md,
.gittargetignore, .sops.yaml with encryption) even with no object to
write. The bootstrap files are never deleted, so the folder outlives its
last resource. Whether the folder exists is read from HEAD's tree, not
from the disk a reset can leave an empty directory on, and nothing
parses its content. A GitTarget no applier applies keeps the old rule.

A GitTarget declared with no planned collection counted as having
settled its initial snapshots, with nothing to deliver. A converge then
went out before its WatchRule's collection was planned (a CRD not
discovered yet), ahead of the snapshot S2 waits for. It now holds its
applier, as a Blocked watch does.

With no receiver, a worker learns of a Git-side push only through its
own rejected push or the refresher. A converge decided before such a
push kept asking for a commit the GitRepository no longer served, and
Flux kept answering "fetched <newer>, not commit <older>"
(RequestFailed), backing off up to 32s each time.

The Flux client now returns a typed error, the dispatcher carries the
revision the source holds on the report (ApplyResult.SourceRevision),
and the worker, when that is not the tip it knows, looks at the remote
as it does at a push notice: a hint, never a fact.

The spec before leaves the second order at Cup in Git and on the
cluster, so patching it to Cup changed nothing: F2 rightly made it no
write, nothing was pushed, and nothing found the Git-side push the spec
is about. It patches to Cone now.

The docs record the folder bootstrap, the barrier for a GitTarget with
no planned collection, and the Flux source hint (decided while
building, 8 to 10), and correct the barrier's wording to the
per-collection rule.

Review findings. An applier can stay due without being sent (a sibling
holds its group), and the next flush takes a newer mark, which publishes
the edits recorded before it. They were kept and carried into the next
apply window, where they withheld the apply's own write of a commit that
holds them: a false collision and an extra Repair. A new mark now starts
each due applier's record over.

The set that logs an ownership conflict once per object only grew; an
Argo CD hook Job per sync grew it for good. It starts over at 1024
objects; the counter still records every exclusion.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
bi-directional.md still said a tie with the edit is mirrored; the
applier's write alone in the edit's second is withheld now. "Withheld
over" is reworded, and the Serial registry counts four singleton
specs.

Nothing produces a heal resync: the watch plane's one caller passes
heal=false, on main too. The Heal flag, the discard of a heal that
would close an open window, its window-idle re-request, and the tests
that drove a heal by hand are removed; a re-request now carries only
its GitTarget.

Four wrappers only tests call since F2 split the planners
(flushEventsToWorktree, applyPendingWriteEvents, applyResyncToWorktree,
groupEventsByBase) move to planning_wrappers_test.go; the planners carry
their docs. deadcode now reports nothing this branch made unreachable.

Stale comments and doc lines that named the removed heal parking and
the quiet period are corrected.

Two manager specs still described the behaviour before this PR, and
had failed on every CI run of the branch:

- Manager Flux Applier: naming the trigger converges it once (S2), as
soon as the branch has a tip, so the first ask refused at the patch
is that CatchUp. ApplyRequestFailed is recorded only for a run's
first failure, so the ForeignCommit that joins the run never shows.
- New write branch, standby: a live event the parent already holds is
no write (F2). Its window closes and nothing is committed or pushed,
where the spec waited for the no-diff window's push. It waits for the
window to close, then holds that nothing is pushed and no branch is
  created.

Review finding. takeReasons armed the applier timer for a retry when
listing the branch's appliers failed, and returned false; its caller
then armed the timer for the windows closing, usually zero, which
stopped it. The pending reasons waited for unrelated activity to wake
the loop. On main the failure returned straight after arming.

The retry is now a deadline (listRetryAt) every arming in
serviceAppliers folds in, cleared once a listing succeeds or nothing is
pending.

Review finding. Two GitProviders naming one repository give its branch
two workers, whose GitTargets can name one trigger. main held an apply
while any sibling was busy writing; S1 removed that gate and flushed
only the sending worker. A sibling's edit not yet published was then
reverted on the cluster by the apply, and the sibling, which sent
nothing and holds no apply window, mirrored the revert.

The flush now covers the siblings. When an apply comes due, the worker
asks each sibling to flush: it closes its open window, takes a mark of
its own and publishes up to it at once. The worker sends once every
sibling it asked is done. Like S1, a sibling's writes decided after
its mark do not hold the send, so continuous editing cannot starve an
apply.

Every worker now shares what it observes of the branch with its
siblings' inboxes, so the tip the attempt is sent for holds their
publications: a sibling's push moves the tip and asks nothing, as a
worker's own does, and what a sibling fetched is foreign to all of
them. An edit a sibling makes while the apply runs is not protected,
as before.

The API comments, which kubectl explain and the CRDs carry, still said
an apply goes only on a branch with nothing live missing from the
commit, that CatchUp follows GitOps Reverser's own pushes, that a
Repair follows an edit made after the apply was asked for, and that
onRefusal: Reapply waits for a branch with no open window. Each apply
now publishes the pending edits first, CatchUp adopts and converges
for both appliers, and a Repair follows an edit made after its flush.

The --author-attribution-grace help and the chart's attribution.grace
said an unmatched event ships as the committer; with attribution on it
is authored "unknown (attribution unresolved)".

- GitCommitWindowsTotal listed no foreign_commit or apply_due reason.
- CommitModePerEvent named "quiet-window boundaries"; a window closes
on its idle timeout or maximum duration.
- The reason-alias comment named NoAdmittedSourceNamespaces, which is
  gone; SourceNamespaceAuthorized's Unknown named a retained-scope
  state that does not exist.
- GitTargetRemoteStatus said it is written whenever the commit
changes; it is sampled on reconcile and written at most once a
minute, the first observation and a repository change at once.

A review of every current-behavior doc against the code at c12f797,
architecture.md and configuration.md in full included. Besides the
applier-echoes behavior (the flush covering sibling workers, the
per-collection initial snapshots, the folder bootstrap, the Flux
source hint, no heal resync), it corrects what had drifted earlier:

- architecture.md: cursor keys, the startup order, the resync scope
(ResyncScope, not ScopeGVR), the /scale path (a parent watch event,
no field patch), the condition metric's kinds, controller watches.
- configuration.md: status.branches scope, what closes a window, the
  unresolved author with attribution on.
- specs: commit-window-refactor's gone types and flag name, the
  status-conditions guide's condition lists and write-conflict rule,
type-followability as built, e2e-test-design's stamps and suite
setup, and history headers on pages whose code is gone.
- design docs: push-cooldown's flush bypass and timer count, the event
model without heals or the quiet branch, superseded headers.

… retries

Review findings on the sibling flush and the listing retry.

- A sibling's push was shared as a push of the worker's own, so it
asked nothing. Its appliers may apply another cluster than this
worker's, so nothing says its content is live where this worker's
  appliers apply. It is foreign now, as it was when a fetch found it;
an echo of content already live is not mirrored (F1). The tip is
still shared, so the attempt is sent for the commit that holds it.
- A shared observation did not wake the sibling, so a ForeignCommit
waited for its next unrelated wake.
- The recorded-operation listing that fails retried on the applier
timer, which the same pass disarmed when nothing was pending. Both
listings of the branch's appliers now keep one retry deadline,
cleared only by a listing that succeeds.

…er by repository (#428)

* feat!: share a GitProvider across namespaces, and key the branch worker by repository

A branch worker was keyed by its GitProvider, so two GitProviders naming
one repository gave one branch two workers. Each had its own clone,
pending writes and apply windows, and they coordinated outside the event
loop: a cross-worker flush with generation counters, observations copied
between inboxes, and source-group claims under a shared lock. The review
of #425 found a defect at each place that coordination left the loop.

One worker now writes a repository branch:

- The worker is keyed by the repository's URL, normalized as repourl
compares it, and the branch (git.BranchKey). It pushes with the
credential of the one GitProvider that owns the branch: the
GitProvider of the oldest GitTarget writing it (git/branch_owner.go).
- A GitTarget writing the branch through another GitProvider is refused
with TargetConflict, and the message names the GitProvider to share.
The GitTarget reconciler, the worker sweep and EnsureWorker decide
ownership the same way, so two GitTargets created too close together
for either reconcile to see the other still end with one worker.
- GitTarget.spec.gitProviderRef gains a namespace, and GitProvider
  gains spec.accessFrom (the ClusterProvider's NamespaceMatcher). A
GitProvider's own namespace is always admitted. authz.GitTargetAdmitted
checks it, so the Validated gate, rule compilation, bootstrap and the
applier checks all refuse a namespace the GitProvider does not admit.
- The sibling machinery is deleted: apply_siblings.go,
apply_sibling_flush.go, the shared observations and the group claims.
- Lookups that assumed the GitProvider is in the GitTarget's namespace
(mappers, the branch inventory, the publication fan-out, the applier
recheck, the event router, bootstrap) use GitTarget.GitProviderKey.

The branch metrics keep their provider_namespace and provider_name
labels: they name the branch's one GitProvider. A GitProvider recreated
under its name with another URL still replaces its worker, and the old
observation moves to the new key so status.remote is taken back.

UPGRADING.md also gains the entry #425 left out, for the removed
FluxTrigger spec.quietPeriod and status.source.prefetch.

BREAKING CHANGE: every GitTarget writing one repository branch must name the same GitProvider; a GitTarget writing it through another GitProvider than the oldest GitTarget there is refused with TargetConflict. Share a GitProvider across namespaces with spec.gitProviderRef.namespace and the GitProvider's spec.accessFrom. See UPGRADING.md.

* test(e2e): share a GitProvider across namespaces, and refuse a second one on its branch

A GitTarget in a tenant namespace mirrors through a GitProvider in the
platform namespace that admits it, with no credential of its own. A
namespace the GitProvider does not admit is refused with
NamespaceNotAuthorized, and a GitTarget writing the same repository
branch through a GitProvider of its own is refused with TargetConflict.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix: let only a GitTarget that may write decide a branch, and ask nothing for one that may not

Review findings on the shared GitProvider.

- An older GitTarget whose ClusterProvider or GitProvider does not
admit its namespace still owned its repository branch, so it got the
GitTarget that may write it refused, and the sweep kept only its
worker. BranchOwners now skips a GitTarget authz.GitTargetAdmitted
refuses, in the reconciler and the worker sweep alike. A read that
fails is an error, never a refusal, so it moves no branch.
- The worker listed a GitTarget the dispatcher would refuse, and so
flushed, raised its apply epoch and held the applier for an attempt
that could not go. appliersOnBranch now leaves it out, with the
  dispatcher's own check (authz.ApplierAdmitted).
- Docs: the worker serves a repository branch, the memory sizing unit
is one worker per repository branch, and the upgrade inventory lists
https and SSH spellings of one repository apart.
