feat(api): default GitBranch and KubeProvider grants to the own namespace - #442
An omitted grant list on a GitBranch or a KubeProvider now means "this object's own namespace". UPGRADING.md is rewritten to describe the net change from 0.53.0. docs/reviews/ is folded into the design docs and a single open-work list.
one consumerNamespaces: {from: Same} grant; the KubeProvider scopes are ["{consumer.namespace}"], with no clusterResources
a list
exactly that list; nothing is added
[]
nobody, the own namespace included
CRD defaults.+kubebuilder:default markers set the defaults, so kubectl get -o yaml shows the effective list.
GitProvider.spec.allowedGitBranches keeps no default. A default branchPatterns: ["*"] would let any same-namespace GitBranch claim any branch.
[] survives every layer:
Go types: the three fields drop omitempty. A nil list is sent as null, which the API server prunes and then defaults. [] is sent as [], so a finalizer Update cannot turn a deny-all back into the default.
Go-side default:access_grants.go applies the same default to a nil list (orDefault), so in-memory objects and fake clients behave like the API server. TestGrantDefaultsMatchCRDs keeps the Go defaults equal to the CRD markers.
Real API server:TestGrantLists_APIServerDefaultsOmittedAndKeepsEmpty (envtest) checks that an omitted list reads back as the default and that [] stays [] through a create and an update.
Chart:kubeProvider.allowedGitTargets and allowedApplierClaims default to null, which leaves the field out so the CRD default applies. [] is rendered as [] (kindIs "slice"). Previously the template dropped empty lists. quickstart.enabled still replaces the list with the quickstart grant.
Trust model. Same-namespace consumers are trusted by default: whoever may create a GitTarget or an applier claim next to a KubeProvider may use its credential within the default scope. configuration.md ("The grants") says so, and how to keep administering a provider separate from using it (a namespace of its own, or []).
Upgrade. Grants are unreleased, so no stored object relies on "omitted = deny".
The chart's local provider behaves differently by default. It used to admit nobody; now it admits the release namespace mirroring itself. kubeProvider.allowedGitTargets: [] gets the old behaviour back.
UPGRADING.md describes the change from 0.53.0
The entries added since 0.53.0 each recorded one PR's step. Some described states that never shipped (GitProvider.spec.accessFrom, FluxTrigger after the rename), and there were four overlapping "delete and recreate the GitTarget" procedures.
Now:
One procedure. "Upgrading from 0.53.0" walks through the whole upgrade in order.
One entry per concept, each written against 0.53.0: KubeProvider, GitBranch, grants, the claim renames, claim behaviour, and GitReceiver.
Renames that weren't documented:Held → InControl (and the Held → Control printer column), ProviderNotFound → GitBranchNotFound, and the new reasons Revoking and AutomatedSyncOff.
The released 0.53.0 Reapply entry is back to its release text. It had been edited to describe behaviour that isn't released; only its broken anchor is fixed.
18 old headings name the version they shipped in (0.28.0–0.39.2) instead of "Unreleased … (next minor)". One of those headings was split across two lines, so half of it rendered as body text.
docs/reviews/ → design docs and docs/TODO.md
docs/reviews/ is gone. Resolved or superseded reviews are deleted.
Omitted access-grant lists for branches and Kubernetes providers now allow access within the resource’s own namespace by default. Kubernetes provider grants are limited to matching source or applier namespaces.
Explicit grant lists replace the defaults; an empty list denies all access.
Documentation
Updated configuration, chart, and upgrade guidance to explain the new defaults and how to configure grants.
Added and revised design notes and planning documents.
docs/reviews/ held review rounds for merged PRs. Resolved and superseded
reviews are deleted; what is still open moves to docs/design/ and
docs/future/, and docs/TODO.md becomes the open-work list, led by what
must land before the next release.

…d versions
The entries added since 0.53.0 each narrated one PR's step, including
states that never shipped. They are now one ordered upgrade procedure and
one entry per concept, written against 0.53.0 with the final names. The
released Reapply entry gets its release text back, and the old
"Unreleased" headings name the version they shipped in.

An omitted GitBranch.spec.allowedGitTargets, KubeProvider.spec.allowedGitTargets
or KubeProvider.spec.allowedApplierClaims is now one from: Same grant (scope
{consumer.namespace}, no clusterResources), set by the CRD default. A written
list is the whole policy and [] admits nobody. GitProvider.spec.allowedGitBranches
keeps no default: which branches may be claimed is always written.
The three fields drop omitempty so [] survives an Update instead of being
re-defaulted, Go mirrors the default for a nil list, and the chart renders
[] as [] while an unset value leaves the field to the CRD default.

Omitted grant lists for GitBranch and KubeProvider now receive same-namespace defaults. Explicit lists remain the complete policy, and empty lists grant no access. Chart rendering, tests, and documentation reflect these rules. Upgrade and planning documents were also updated.

Summary
Describe release migration and behavior docs/UPGRADING.md
The guide adds migration steps and documents API, grant, applier, and receiver behavior. It also updates release headings.
Revise backlog and open asks docs/TODO.md, docs/future/gitops-api-open-asks.md
The backlog and open-asks document reorganize follow-up work, research, and reported issues.
Add and revise design proposals docs/design/*, docs/future/idea-*, docs/reviews/20261022-apply-binding-rename.md, docs/design/one-writer-per-branch-plan.md
Design documents record proposed watch, attribution, test, race-handling, ownership, ApplicationSet, and namespace-selector work. The apply-binding rename work plan was removed.
The grant-default behavior changes are tested, but the upgrade guide still contains instructions that would fail admission during a 0.53.0 migration. Several grant-default descriptions also contradict the new behavior. Fix these documentation errors before merging.

Distinguish omitted grant lists in the semantics table.
The new guidance above this table says an omitted GitBranch or KubeProvider grant list admits its own namespace. This row still says every omitted grant list gives “No access.” Change the row to distinguish those two kinds from GitProvider. An operator using the table could otherwise leave a provider open to same-namespace consumers while expecting denial.

Include chart inputs in the image-refresh path gate.
The CI leg sets HELM_CHART_SOURCE=./gitops-reverser.tgz and installs that chart, but the proposed filter lists no charts/** input. A chart-only change can skip the image-refresh job even though it changes the artifact under test. Add the chart packaging inputs to the gate.

Update the Reapply migration to the claim API.
Earlier sections define FluxClaim, ArgoCDClaim, spec.applierClaimRef, and remove quietPeriod. This section still instructs operators to use spec.applyTriggerRef, the removed trigger kinds, and quietPeriod. Following these instructions can fail admission or leave the applier unconfigured. Rewrite this migration and behavior text for claims and KubeProvider.spec.allowedApplierClaims.
