feat(docs): add the docs archive cut, provenance and contract - #384
Conversation
Leave native <a> and /docs-prefixed targets alone, scope string-literal expression hrefs, validate cross-version links against the version they name, and add content tests forbidding the two link forms that cannot work.
Walk the CHANGELOG past patch releases on the current line, compare lines numerically, and skip lines whose last tag predates the current/ layout.
…hemselves Validate every input before writing, roll back on a failed write, suggest the numerically newest patch tag, and remove the temp repos the tests create.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe changes add tooling to create documentation archives from release tags and validate their provenance. The archive contract runs in CI, release-cut, and pre-push checks. Documentation rendering now identifies archived pages and scopes eligible links to their version. Export and link checks include archived content, and archived routes receive dedicated security-header tests. Suggested labels: Priority: ⬇️ Low Change: Feature Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This adds archive tooling and contracts that do nothing until an archive is cut. Two small fixes are worth making before merge: the cut script should ignore inherited Git environment variables, and the canonical URL should be built so a trailing slash in the site URL does not produce a double slash. Neither affects existing docs behavior. Pre-merge checks |

Docs archive cut, provenance and contract. 14 required checks and Web Contract green on 4725b35. Codex reviewed in two scoped runs (eight should-fix findings, all fixed), CodeRabbit raised two minor findings (both fixed). CodeQL still annotates one file-race note in the maintainer-run cut script (alert 407), tracked as a follow-up.

Second step of the versioned docs archive for v1.0. This adds everything needed to archive a release line's docs and verify the archive, and it's inert until one exists. There are zero archives in this PR and the exported docs are unchanged.
How an archive works
An archive is
docs/content/docs/vX.Y/, a byte-for-byte copy ofdocs/content/docs/currentas it was at the last release tag of that line. It serves at/docs/vX.Y/<page>. Because it's an exact copy, proving it is one tree-hash comparison against the tag. What's here
npm run docs:archive -- <tag>cuts an archive from a tag through git, never from the working tree. It validates every input before writing and undoes its own writes if a step fails.docs/content/archive-provenance.jsonrecords the tag, commit, path and tree for each archive.scripts/docs-archive-config-test.shis the contract, with a self-test beside it. Archive directories and provenance entries must match one to one, the tag must resolve to the recorded commit, the committed tree must equal the tree at the tag, the tag must be the last of its line, the current line can't have an archive, and once the line advances the previous line's archive has to exist. It runs in Release Contract, pre-push and the release cut.noindex, carry the version in the title, and show a callout linking to the current page.RELEASING.mdanddocs/content/README.mddescribe the layout and the cut.A line can only be archived from a tag that already has
docs/content/docs/current, so v0.9 gets archived from a tag cut after the docs move, not from v0.9.24.Verification
v0.9copy and read the export: pages land atdocs/out/v0.9/<slug>.html, the version index atdocs/out/v0.9.html, archive pages have the robots tag and callout, and markdown andCardlinks resolve under/docs/v0.9/. One archive adds 6,978 bytes per page.scripts/*-test.shpass. Full pre-push hook passed. Not proven here: Vercel serving the dotted
/docs/v0.9route. Previews are off, so the first real archive is the first proof.Review
Codex reviewed the contract and tooling, and separately the rendering. No blockers, eight should-fix findings, all fixed in the three
fix(docs)commits. One more came from the pre-push hook itself: the cut script's tests inheritedGIT_DIRfrom the hook and ran their fixture commits against the real repo. The fixture tests now drop everyGIT_*variable and check they're inside the fixture before committing.Changelog
npm run docs:archive -- <tag>to create a versioned docs archive from a release tag and update provenance and page metadata.noindexsettings, and a callout to current documentation.docs/content/archive-provenance.jsonis empty, so this change does not add documentation pages.Concerns
/docs/v0.9remains unverified. The first real archive is needed to confirm production routing.
