The README fact-check for #377 found that the website's comparison data disagreed with the competitive landscape in a few places. This brings them in line, with each changed claim checked against the other project's own docs or release page.

  • Portainer and Komodo release evidence said "Not published". Portainer's 2.39.5 agent image carries BuildKit SBOM and provenance attestations, and Komodo's v2.3.2 Periphery image carries a provenance attestation. Neither has a cosign signature that I could find. The cells and the landscape now say that.
  • Watchtower Prometheus metrics said "No". Watchtower documents an opt-in, experimental /v1/metrics endpoint. Diun's "Yes" was right (opt-in, :9090/metrics).
  • "Not documented" is its own state in the matrix now. It was rendering as "no". The MCP cells use it.
  • Image size. Measured for 0.9.23, compressed: 44.8 MB amd64, 40.5 MB arm64, 33.4 MB arm/v7. "~10 MB" was the binary, and "~47 MB" didn't match anything. Watchtower's image is about 6 MB, not ~50 MB.
  • ROADMAP.md listed a BuildKit-aware Sockguard profile as post-v1. Sockguard v1.7.0 already ships portwing-with-mediated-build.yaml.
  • The landscape now states its own rule: unknown behavior is "not documented", not guessed absent.

Sources are in the landscape's evidence list. Left for the next re-verify: Portainer's "~300 MB node image" and Watchtower's "basic cosign support", both still unsourced.

Changelog

  • 🔧 Changed comparison cells to distinguish “Not documented” from “No.” Updated MCP and Prometheus claims to match the cited documentation.
  • 🔧 Changed Watchtower metrics to opt-in and experimental. Diun metrics remain opt-in.
  • 🔧 Changed Portainer and Komodo supply-chain entries to report the checked SBOM, provenance, checksum, and signature evidence.
  • 🔧 Changed compressed image-size figures for Portwing and Watchtower.
  • 🗑️ Removed the BuildKit-aware Sockguard profile from the post-v1 roadmap. Sockguard v1.7.0 already includes the preset.
  • 🔧 Changed the landscape guidance to treat unknown behavior as “Not documented,” not as absent.

Concerns or issues

  • Re-verify Portainer’s “~300 MB node image” and Watchtower’s “basic cosign support”; the PR description says these claims remain unsourced.

The ghcr.io/codeswhat/portwing:0.9.23 manifests sum to 44.8 MB (amd64),
40.5 MB (arm64) and 33.4 MB (arm/v7) of compressed layers. The ~10 MB
figure is the unpacked amd64 binary (9.4 MB), and ~47 MB matched
neither. The Watchtower comparison cell is now containrrr/watchtower:latest
at 5.6 MB compressed (amd64) instead of an unsourced ~50 MB.
Sockguard's portwing-with-mediated-build.yaml preset (in sockguard since
v1.7.0) allows a stock BuildKit docker compose build, and COMPATIBILITY.md
already documents it. Remove it from the post-v1 list in ROADMAP.md and the
README roadmap table.
Watchtower documents an opt-in, experimental /v1/metrics endpoint behind
its HTTP API token (containrrr.dev/watchtower/metrics and /arguments).
Diun documents an opt-in metrics server on :9090/metrics
(crazymax.dev/diun/config/metrics). The Watchtower "No" was wrong, so the
row is a tie and the matrix cell is yes.
… matrix

The route pages already say competitor MCP and Portainer Prometheus
support is not documented, but the matrix and the home-page teaser
rendered a flat "no". Add an undocumented cell value to
ComparisonCellIcon (question-mark icon, "Not documented" for screen
readers), use it wherever the route data says not documented, and add it
to both legends. The Watchtower and Diun route-table MCP cells now match
their prose.
…leases

The comparison pages said "Not published" while the landscape said "not
evaluated". Checked 2026-10-08: Portainer 2.39.5 ships checksums, and its
agent image carries SPDX SBOM and SLSA v0.2 provenance attestations.
Komodo v2.3.2 ships bare binaries, and its Periphery image carries SLSA v1
provenance. Neither has a cosign signature tag. The landscape also now
states the "not documented, not guessed absent" rule and cites the
Watchtower and Diun metrics docs.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update image-size figures and post-v1 roadmap entries. They add Portainer and Komodo supply-chain findings and revise competitor metrics and MCP statuses. The comparison components add an “undocumented” status with a question-mark icon and label.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cac26

The comparison pages may overstate the scope of the signature check, and migration readers may mistake the amd64 image size for a platform-independent figure. These are bounded documentation-accuracy fixes; the PR is otherwise mergeable.

The differentiators heading claimed competitors don't cover things the data only shows as undocumented. The README's release-evidence cells for Portainer and Komodo now match the evidence checked today. The Watchtower image figure names its version and platform and has an evidence entry.

Scope the Cosign findings to the legacy .sig tag.

The evidence note already states that the Cosign check searched only for the legacy .sig tag. Keep the related claims explicitly scoped to that check, because the search does not establish that OCI 1.1 referrers contain no Cosign signatures.

The migration tables omit the platform for the 45 MB figure. README.md Line 371 identifies that value as amd64 and lists smaller arm64 and arm/v7 sizes. Label each 45 MB value as amd64 or list the platform-specific sizes.
