MDtool Open contains the public interoperability layer for MDtool, a local-first document ingestion tool for people and AI agents.
MDtool turns heterogeneous local files into inspectable Markdown and validated Knowledge Packages. This repository intentionally publishes the interfaces that downstream tools can rely on while the complete desktop application remains in a private repository.
- The MDtool Agent CLI JSON contract and stable exit codes.
- The Knowledge Package directory, provenance, quality and embedding contract.
- The Codex skill for guarded local ingestion.
- Public integration documentation and future non-sensitive fixtures.
- Desktop UI source code.
- Installer, signing and update infrastructure.
- Telemetry receiver and release operations.
- Commercial or platform-specific implementation details.
This boundary is deliberate: integrations can be inspected, automated and discussed in public without exposing the full product implementation.
status → inspect → ingest → validate
An agent must stop when access is disabled, a path is unauthorized, ingestion fails, or package validation returns valid=false. MDtool never treats structural validation as proof that the source is factually correct.

MDtool prepares documents but does not currently generate embeddings or run a vector database. Downstream RAG systems must use the same embedding model ID, revision and vector dimensions for document and query embeddings. Changing any of these requires re-embedding the document corpus.
