Custom Macros: Further Testing Needed

Summary

Custom macros were added in v6.3.6 but need further testing before considered stable.

Implementation

Uses ST's new macro system (macros.register()) with legacy fallback (MacrosParser.registerMacro()).

Audit + fixes shipped in v6.13.5 (commit 0eb580e on main). 50 regression tests added so the macros are exercised on every release, not just by hand.

One real bug found

sp_characters and sp_char_count returned '' and '0' whenever charactersPresent was an empty array — because [] || alt evaluates to [] in JS (empty array is truthy). The fallback to characters[] never fired. This bites in solo beats and any state where the LLM dropped charactersPresent. Now uses an explicit Array.isArray(...) && .length check before falling back.

Risk hardened: error containment

Every handler is now wrapped at registration in a try/catch that returns ''. A runtime error in any single macro previously bubbled into ST's prompt processor — could break the entire generation. Errors are now logged via err() so they show up in the Crash Log (issue #13's Debug Inspector → Crashes tab).

Six new macros

The original generic {{sp_quests}} is preserved for backward compat — joins both tiers.

Test coverage (50 new cases)

tests/issue-8-macros.test.mjs covers:

• Empty snapshot — every macro returns '' (or '0' for counts), no throws
• Scene field extraction — all 10 field-based macros against a populated snapshot
• Aggregations — character list / relationship summaries / quest tier splits / resolved-quest exclusion
• Fallback path — sp_characters correctly falls back to characters[] when charactersPresent is empty (the bug above)
• Profile coupling — sp_active_profile reflects current active + updates when switched
• Live updates — handlers re-read getLatestSnapshot() on each call, no stale cache to invalidate
• Registration via new ctx.macros.register API (ST 1.13+)
• Registration via legacy ctx.registerMacro fallback (older ST builds)
• Error containment — a throwing handler resolves to '', doesn't propagate
• Both APIs missing — registration warns + bails, no crash

Full suite 559/559 passing.

Closing the audit — experimental label removed since macros are now exercised by the test suite. If you want to keep this open as a tracker for the three manual-only items above, happy to leave it.

Comprehensive audit completed in v6.13.5 — 6 new macros added, error containment hardened, 50 new regression tests in tests/issue-8-macros.test.mjs. The v6.24.0 suite has 1,411 tests passing total.

Macros now stable and shipped:

All resolve in character cards, system prompts, and Quick Replies. Empty-tracker case returns empty string (not undefined / "[macro]"). Live updating after new generation works via re-evaluation on every prompt build.

Compatibility:

• ST's new `macros.register()` API (preferred path)
• Legacy `MacrosParser.registerMacro()` fallback for older ST versions
