orientation-technical

Executive Summary This repo contains the materials for the UVADS residential technical orientation. Chief of which is a checklist of items to complete before classes begin. Supplemental materials are linked to help complete the checklist. There is also a schedule of synchronous session to help complete the checklist.

The Checklist

NB: if you have already competed an item there is no nead to repeat it, except for item 8

  1. watch Jurassic Park (UVA Library)
  2. create a github account - link - email your username to lpa2a@virginia.edu
  3. complete computer hardware survey - link
  4. install VS code
    • learn the first four terminal commands - [pwd,ls,cd,history]
    • use a terminal text editor - choose one [vi,nano,emacs,etc.]
    • learn the PATH environment variable
    • confirm sucessful operation by running a hello world program in BASH (or other shell if you prefer)
  5. install R and Rstudio Desktop
  6. install python and jupyter with anaconda

    • confirm sucessful operation by running a hello world program (using spyder and jupyter)
  7. familiarize yourself with the Data Science Library Research Guide - link
  8. learn about High Performance Computing at UVA
    • read - rc.virginia.edu
    • attend - syncronous session @ 3p on 6/17 (thur) - flyer
  9. rewatch Jurassic Park (UVA Library)

Synchronous Sessions

There will be 7 synchronous sessions delivered via zoom. For details please see the "Online Meetings" tool in the corresponding collab site for this orientation (link). The subject of the session is tentative and subject to change based on needs of the students (except for the RC session with guests). All sessions except the 9a kick off are nominally one hour long.

  1. Kickoff - 9am 6/15 - 15 min long - link to agenda
    • scope - get ready for classes next week
    • attack plan - complete the checklist, come to sync sessions for questions
    • how to get in touch with Pete (Teams Chat me, i'm available full time this week - after bootcamp use email)
  2. 6/15 11a (items 1,2 - hardware/github),3p (3 - vs code and Bash)
  3. 6/16 11a (4 - R installation) ,3p (5 - Python installation)
  4. 6/17 11a (open office hours),3p (Rivanna orientation with guests from Research Computing - flyer

Reading List

This reading list is in the tradition of old. It is a collection of good resources. The goal isn't to read or memorize everything in this list. The goal is to give starting points for exploration. You are encouraged to pick something and see where it leads. Have conversations about it. Pull on the thread. The brackets at the beginning of each item indicate the rough alignment to the 4+1 model.
