What

Adds Ideogram 4.5 to the fal provider and CLI.

  • Aliases: ideogram-v4-5 → ideogram/v4.5, ideogram-v4-5/edit → ideogram/v4.5/edit. The prod canonical ideogram_v4_5 works via normalizeModelId. ideogram-v4-5 with files auto-routes to /edit, like nano-banana-2.
  • Strict schema: both fal endpoints are additionalProperties: false. The provider no longer adds acceleration: "high" for Ideogram (it would 422), and aspectRatio becomes an image_size preset.
  • Edit files: files[0] → image_url, files[1..4] → reference_image_urls. More than 4 references throw before submit.
  • Refactor, no behaviour change: file layout, acceleration and endpoint routing moved into exported helpers (applyImageFileInputs, supportsImageAcceleration, resolveImageEndpoint) so they're unit-testable.
  • Model definition: src/definitions/models/ideogram-v4-5.ts with quality pricing — very_low $0.008 (edit), low $0.03, medium $0.06, high $0.22 per image. Size, edit precision, references and mask don't change the price (checked with fal's billable-units header).
  • Docs: CLI --model help and the docs/sdk.md fal model table (also adds the missing gpt-image-2-5 entries).
  • Separate commit: native-audio-scene1.tsx imported createVarg from @vargai/gateway, which isn't a dependency. That broke tsc and the pre-push hook on main; it now imports from the local ai-sdk.

Mask and edit_precision go through providerOptions.fal (mask_url, edit_precision).

Checks

  • bun test src/ai-sdk/providers/fal.test.ts: 20 pass (7 new).
  • bun run test:ci: 437 pass.
  • tsc --noEmit: clean.
  • Live against fal: generateImage t2i (16:9, low) and edit with source + 1 reference (very_low) both returned images.

API side: vargHQ/api#145.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds the fal ideogram v4.5 model definition, pricing, endpoint routing, and image-input handling. It updates fal model listings and changes one example to import createVarg from the local ai-sdk entry point.

Changes

ideogram v4.5 model and fal support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model definition and discovery
src/definitions/models/ideogram-v4-5.ts, src/definitions/models/index.ts, src/definitions/actions/image.ts, docs/sdk.md
Adds the model schemas, quality-based pricing, and registry entry. Updates the fal image-model listings.
Fal endpoint and image input handling
src/ai-sdk/providers/fal.ts, src/ai-sdk/providers/fal.test.ts
Adds ideogram endpoint aliases, file-based edit routing, and source/reference image fields with a four-reference limit. Ideogram requests omit the acceleration field. Tests cover routing, input layouts, and pricing.

Example sdk import

Layer / File(s) Summary
Use the local sdk entry point
src/react/examples/async/native-audio-scene1.tsx
Imports createVarg from the local ai-sdk entry point instead of @vargai/gateway.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 01252

Ideogram 4.5 support works for the common cases. Requests with an unsupported explicit size can fail at fal with a 422. This is a narrow edge case, so it is mergeable with a follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 01252

The change extends an existing external image-generation flow without a demonstrated increase in privilege. Residual uncertainty remains around downstream access restrictions and external file retention.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is caller-supplied image content and generation input crossing the existing external-provider boundary. The diff does not add a credential source or privileged execution sink. Available evidence does not establish the maximum downstream tenant or service scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Recognized Ideogram requests enforce the four-reference limit before queue submission. Caller-supplied provider options still enter the request directly, and raw-prefixed identifiers still select an explicit endpoint. These existing caller-authority paths are not new authorization bypasses established by this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new reference-limit rejection occurs after all supplied files have been resolved. Binary files may therefore be uploaded before local rejection, with no deletion path shown and uploaded URLs cached for seven days. The upload operation and cache behavior predate the PR; cache duration does not establish external object-retention duration.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the supported file count before hashing or uploading binary files, so locally invalid requests do not create external storage side effects. This is a failure-containment improvement, not a finding of newly introduced unauthorized disclosure.

unvalidated quality cast, wrong price for bad values

providerOptions.quality is cast to string without a check. a non-string value (like a number) makes QUALITY_RATE_USD[quality] undefined, so the cost silently falls back to the medium rate. the real fal call would send the bad value and fail, so the estimate is misleading. meow, small fix: check typeof first.

🌐 Web query:

official fal.ai Ideogram v4.5 image_size supported sizes width height API schema

💡 Result:

The **official fal.ai Ideogram v4.5 page** shows an **Image Size** control with separate width and height inputs. ([fal.ai](https://fal.ai/models/ideogram/v4.5?utm_source=openai))

I couldn’t verify the exact API schema details—such as allowed dimensions, defaults, or whether custom `width`/`height` objects are accepted—from the available v4.5 source. The separate **Ideogram v4.0** API docs do explicitly allow custom sizes as `{"width": 1280, "height": 720}`, but that does **not** establish the v4.5 schema. 🌐 Web query:

site:fal.ai/models/ideogram/v4.5 "36" supported sizes image_size

💡 Result:

Yes—fal’s current `ideogram/v4.5` API schema says `image_size` accepts **36 supported exact width × height combinations**, as well as presets such as `square_hd`, `portrait_4_3`, and `landscape_16_9`. It lists all 36 dimensions in the schema. ([fal.ai](https://fal.ai/api/openapi/queue/openapi.json?endpoint_id=ideogram%2Fv4.5))

validate ideogram sizes before submission, meow

when id is an ideogram model and size is outside fal's 36 supported image_size pairs, FalImageModel.doGenerate sends it as { width, height } without validation. fal can reject that request with a 422. validate the dimensions before assigning input.image_size, and reject or omit unsupported values with an unsupported warning.
