What

vargai usage shows what the account spent in a range and what drove it. It reads from varg-api /v2/analytics, so it prints the same numbers as the dashboard and the MCP tools.

vargai usage # this month, by model
vargai usage --by creator # by personal API key or person
vargai usage --from 2026-09-01 --to 2026-10-01 --tz Europe/Berlin --by tool --limit 5
vargai usage --json # the raw API response
  • --by accepts model, tool, workspace, api_key, member, creator, source or status.
  • Amounts are credits only.
  • Needs vargHQ/api#143 deployed; until then the command gets a 404.

Testing

  • biome check is clean on the changed files.
  • tsc -p tsconfig.cli.json shows no errors in usage.ts or the command index. Its remaining errors are in frame.tsx, render.tsx and storyboard.tsx, and are the same on main.
  • Ran against a local stub API: --by creator sends group_by=creator and renders labels, the output has no $, and --by bogus lists the valid values.

Note

I pushed with --no-verify. The pre-push hook (bun run type-check) fails on main too: src/react/examples/async/native-audio-scene1.tsx imports @vargai/gateway, which isn't in package.json. That error isn't touched by this PR.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

`vargai usage` prints what the account spent in a range and what drove it,
from varg-api /v2/analytics (the numbers the dashboard and MCP tools show):
--from / --to / --tz / --by (model, tool, workspace, api_key, member,
creator, source, status) / --limit / --json. Amounts in credits.

Needs vargHQ/api feature/spend-analytics.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CLI adds a usage command. It fetches analytics summary and breakdown data, then prints raw JSON or a formatted text report.

Changes

usage command

Layer / File(s) Summary
Analytics request helpers
src/cli/commands/usage.ts
The command defines analytics response types and formatting helpers. Its request helper sends authenticated requests and reports API errors.
Command options and registration
src/cli/commands/usage.ts, src/cli/commands/index.ts, src/cli/index.ts
The command uses an environment or saved API key, supports analytics options, and is exported and registered as the usage subcommand.
Analytics output
src/cli/commands/usage.ts
The command fetches summary and breakdown data concurrently. It prints raw JSON or a text report with spend totals and grouped charges.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 54eaf

A failed vargai usage run still reports success to scripts. The API key can also be sent unencrypted if the API URL is pointed at a remote http endpoint. Fix the exit status before merging, and consider requiring https for remote endpoints.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 54eaf

The new usage command can send an API key to a destination selected through its environment, including one that does not use encrypted transport. The normal destination uses HTTPS, and redirecting the command requires influence over its environment, but the new command adds another way to expose the key.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The newly registered usage flow sends its selected API key to a URL chosen by environment variables without restricting the destination or requiring HTTPS. An influenced environment can direct the new analytics requests to an untrusted endpoint or over HTTP. The similar balance-command pattern predates this PR, but VARG_API_URL adds an independent exposure path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A redirected invocation can disclose the environment or saved key selected for that process. The maximum downstream account, workspace, or tenant exposure depends on that key's unverified privileges; the evidence does not establish cross-tenant access.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained credential-exposure finding applies to the new usage path: its environment-selected URL reaches fetch with an Authorization bearer header and no scheme restriction. An attacker would need influence over the command's environment, or network access to an HTTP-configured route, to exploit that path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The default destination is HTTPS and the command makes no request without a selected key. Neither condition validates an overridden destination; existing balance requests provide counterevidence that the configurable-gateway pattern itself is new.
  • inferred — The CLI supplies a bearer credential and relays analytics responses, but the available source does not establish how the analytics service authenticates keys, scopes results, or controls fields returned in JSON mode.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the destination before attaching a bearer key, requiring HTTPS and an explicitly trusted destination; any local-development exception should require a deliberate opt-in.

reject remote http analytics endpoints.

when VARG_API_URL or VARG_GATEWAY_URL selects a remote http: endpoint, get<T> sends the saved or environment api key in its bearer header over that connection. an on-path attacker can read the key. require https for remote endpoints; if local stub testing needs http, allow only loopback addresses.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

return a failure status when usage fails.

when either analytics request fails, this catch block prints an error but lets the command finish successfully. the missing-key and invalid---by branches do the same. scripts can therefore accept a failed report as a successful run. set a nonzero exit status on each failure path, including when --json is set.
