There are utilities in the FreeBSD ports tree that are written in python that claim to help you find the fastest pkg mirror.
The FreeBSD project also uses some geolocation stuff.
Unfortuntely, in order to use the python version, you have to fetch the python packages.
This version uses only FreeBSD core utilities. You can fetch it straight from this github, or just paste it in at a shell prompt, and Robert's your mother's brother.
It would be super cool if this were absorbed into base.
