What does this PR do?

Adds a WithTLS() option to the Kafka module that starts the broker with an
additional SSL listener on port 9095, next to the existing PLAINTEXT one on
9093.

When the option is enabled, the module:

  • generates a self-signed CA and a server certificate signed by it in a
post-start hook, once the container host is known, so the certificate is
valid for localhost, 127.0.0.1 and the Docker host (including remote
    hosts)
  • packs the server certificate, key and CA chain into a PKCS12 keystore and
copies it with its credentials to /etc/kafka/secrets before Kafka starts
  • appends the SSL listener to KAFKA_LISTENERS and
KAFKA_LISTENER_SECURITY_PROTOCOL_MAP after all the user options are
applied, so it is kept even if the user overrides those variables

New container methods:

  • BrokersTLS(ctx) returns the SSL listener endpoint
  • TLSConfig() returns a *tls.Config trusting the generated CA

Both return an error if the container was not created with WithTLS().

New dependencies: github.com/mdelapenya/tlscert and
software.sslmate.com/src/go-pkcs12 (for the PKCS12 keystore).

Why is it important?

Users need to test Kafka clients against a TLS-secured broker. Today they have
to build the certificates, the keystore and the listener configuration
themselves. Other modules (Redis, Valkey, Postgres, Cassandra) already provide
TLS support in a similar way.

Related issues

How to test this PR

cd modules/kafka
go test -count=1 ./...
  • TestKafka_withTLS produces and consumes a message over SSL, checks that a
client without the generated CA is rejected and that PLAINTEXT keeps working
  • TestCreateTLSCerts checks the certificate is valid for localhost,
127.0.0.1 and a remote host by name or IP
  • TestAppendListEntry checks the SSL listener is appended only when missing

Follow-ups

Restarting the container (Stop() + Start()) leaves the broker unreachable.
This already happens without TLS: the starter script is still in the container,
so Kafka starts before the post-start hook updates it, and the log wait
strategy matches the line from the previous run. It could be fixed in a
separate PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional TLS support for Kafka containers, providing secure broker endpoints and client TLS configuration.
    • TLS-enabled containers retain the existing plaintext listener alongside the secure listener.
    • Added certificate generation and validation. Incompatible SSL listener settings now cause startup to fail, and TLS connection details are unavailable when TLS is not enabled.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance and an example for enabling TLS and connecting to Kafka securely.

Walkthrough

The Kafka module adds optional TLS support alongside the plaintext listener. It generates certificates and a PKCS12 keystore, configures an SSL listener on port 9095, and provides methods to retrieve TLS broker addresses and client configuration.

Changes

Kafka TLS listener

Layer / File(s) Summary
TLS option and certificate generation
modules/kafka/options.go, modules/kafka/tls.go, modules/kafka/go.mod, modules/kafka/tls_test.go

TLS listener startup and material setup
modules/kafka/kafka.go, modules/kafka/tls_test.go, modules/kafka/kafka_test.go, docs/modules/kafka.md
Configures the SSL listener and port, then copies generated TLS material into the container. Tests cover listener configuration and invalid port settings. Documentation describes the TLS option and listener behavior.
TLS client access and validation
modules/kafka/kafka.go, modules/kafka/kafka_test.go, docs/modules/kafka.md
Adds BrokersTLS(ctx) and TLSConfig(). Integration tests cover TLS and plaintext connections, rejection of an untrusted client, and errors when TLS is disabled. Documentation describes both accessors.

The TLS listener and client configuration are consistent with the intended behavior, with no identified merge-blocking issue. Merge after normal checks, including the Kafka integration tests.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0a73e

The optional TLS path preserves certificate verification and leaves existing plaintext behavior unchanged. The main uncertainty is certificate consistency during concurrent startup recovery, with exposure limited to the affected test container.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: If recovery starts overlap before certificates have been cached, unsynchronized certificate creation can produce different authorities for copied broker material and returned client trust. Successful sequential startup avoids this condition, and mismatched trust should fail closed; lifecycle-hook serialization remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new listener and server identity apply to the opted-in Kafka test container and clients trusting its generated CA. Actual network reachability depends on Docker port publication and host isolation; the inspected module does not establish broader service, tenant, or production credential authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected client path retains server-certificate verification. The integration test asserts that a client lacking the generated CA cannot connect; this is client verification of the broker, not evidence of broker-side client authentication. The existing plaintext access path remains intentionally available.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Host identity comes from the container abstraction rather than Kafka client requests. Private server material is installed in the container, while the public client API returns trust configuration rather than the private key or signing authority.
  • observed — The server keystore and password file are installed with mode 0644, using a fixed test password. This makes the keystore readable to processes with sufficient container filesystem access; effective access by other users or workloads was not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Normal first-start ordering contains material-copy failures before broker activation. Partial copies, cancellation after script publication, and concurrent recovery do not have an explicit publication-generation protocol. Stable cached material reduces sequential restart trust drift, but does not prove atomic recovery.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish a single-generation certificate ownership guarantee during recovery, through synchronized generation or an explicit serialized-start contract. Validate interruption and overlapping-start behavior without weakening certificate verification.
  • proposed — Where compatible with the broker image, restrict keystore and credential permissions to the broker identity and document that WithTLS supplies an additional encrypted test endpoint, not TLS-only access or client authorization.

Hi @RuslanKarabalin this PR SGTM, thank you!

I'll let you interact with the review by the agents, and once all comments are addressed or challenged, will run the CI and eventually approve when green.

Cheers!

Thanks @mdelapenya! All the agents comments are addressed now:

  • Conflicting user-defined SSL listener (CodeRabbit/Copilot): fixed in 0a73e32.
I went with failing fast instead of silently rewriting the user's entry:
if KAFKA_LISTENERS defines an SSL:// listener on a port other than 9095,
or the protocol map maps SSL to something other than SSL, Run returns a clear error.
Happy to switch to rewriting it if you prefer.
  • TLS certs are now generated once and reused on restarts,
so the keystore always matches TLSConfig().

Tests and lint pass locally for the module (including against confluent-local:7.4.0, the minimal supported version).
Ready for CI whenever you have time.
