What and why

Part of #2088.

Pattern Brush Options gets a menu below the Outer Corner Tile and the Inner Corner Tile. Each corner tile can be the brush's own corner art (Original), None, or one of four tiles made from the side tile: Auto-Centered, Auto-Between, Auto-Sliced and Auto-Overlap.

  • The Brushes help page (archived copy) lists the tiles: "Pattern brushes can include up to five tiles, for the sides, inner corner, outer corner, beginning, and end of the pattern."
  • The Automatic corner generation how-to (archived copy) names "the Auto Generate Corners feature".
  • The help page does not describe the four automatic tiles. Using Pattern Brushes (Classroom in a Book, archived copy) does: "In the menu, you can choose from four types of corners that are automatically generated", with Auto-Centered ("The side tile is stretched around the corner and centered on it"), Auto-Between, Auto-Sliced ("similar to a miter joint in a wooden picture frame") and Auto-Overlap ("Copies of the tiles overlap at the corner"). The same article lists None in a tile's menu.

Corners come from an automatic tile only when one is picked. A brush without that choice draws its corners as on main: its own corner art, or the other kind of corner's art when it has art for only one kind. Corner art wins over an automatic choice. The definition stores the choice as outer_source and inner_source (none, autoCentered, autoBetween, autoSliced, autoOverlap), which brush.options sets.

The automatic tiles run straight along the path at the corner and follow it towards the side tiles, so they meet a curve that runs into the corner. On a short path, a corner's tile is squeezed along so that it stays within the path, and its two sides still meet on the corner's diagonal.

After #3945 merges, this branch conflicts in crates/brush/src/warp.rs (the use lines) and crates/engine/src/cmd/brushsym.rs (the brush.options params text); keeping both sides resolves both. It merges cleanly with #3954.

Docs: docs/mcp.md and a line in docs/target-app-parity.md.

How it was tested

New tests:

  • vectorcraft-brush: each automatic tile fills every corner of a square; the tiles join a curve that runs into a corner, and meet across the band after a curve; a tile taller than the corner can reach meets on the diagonal; on a short path the tiles stay within the path and meet on the diagonal; Auto-Sliced masks stroked tiles at the diagonal; corner art wins over a source; None leaves that kind of corner empty; a brush without corner tiles or a source leaves corners empty, as on main; the sources round-trip and stay out of brushes without them.
  • vectorcraft-ui-egui: the dialog sets each corner tile to Original, None or an automatic tile, and Original keeps the corner art a corner borrows from the other kind.

Run on 0ad9223c (on main at 9997ff02), on macOS:

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-brush -p vectorcraft-engine -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo test -p vectorcraft-brush: 51 passed
  • cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib brush_options: 19 passed
  • cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n: 40 passed
  • cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib brush: 69 passed
  • cargo xtask brands, cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask layers

I did not run cargo xtask ci end to end; upstream CI runs the full gate.

cargo xtask ci passed in this pull request's CI run: https://github.com/storytold/vectorcraft/actions/runs/40718096712/job/122921172598

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Pattern brushes can use Original, None, or automatic corner tiles: Auto-Centered, Auto-Between, Auto-Sliced, and Auto-Overlap.
    • Automatic corner tiles adapt to the path shape; Auto-Sliced clips tiles along the corner diagonal.
    • Corner art can fall back to the opposite corner when no specific art or source is selected. Corner choices are available in brush options with previews.
  • Documentation
    • Added details on corner-tile choices and brush option behavior.

Walkthrough

Pattern brushes now support configurable sources for missing outer and inner corner art. Automatic sources generate corner pieces from side tiles. The brush options dialog exposes the choices, and the command and brush documentation describe the fields and behavior.

Changes: Pattern Brush corner sources

Layer / File(s) Summary
Corner source configuration
crates/brush/src/lib.rs
Adds CornerSource values and optional outer and inner source fields to PatternBrush. Absent sources are omitted from serialization.
Automatic corner construction and trimming
crates/brush/src/warp.rs, crates/brush/src/tests.rs
Generates corner pieces from side tiles, with AutoSliced clipping and AutoOverlap unmasked. Run trimming uses each corner’s generated trim amount. Tests cover corner coverage, bounds, fallback, serialization, and clipping.
Corner choices in the editor and documentation

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 7771f

No actionable merge-blocking issue is established for the current change. It is ready for normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7771f

The change adds saved rendering choices without an identified expansion of permissions or external access. Existing validation and transactional editing remain in place. Compatibility and complex-art rendering are the principal residual risks.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The traced effect is a brush-library update in the active document and changed geometry for strokes using that brush. Rendering consumes document-supplied art in the application process. The inspected route establishes document and rendering exposure, not an expansion into credentials, infrastructure or cross-service authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The control handler validates permitted dialog fields before setting them. The new setter marks corner choices explicitly selected but does not itself persist document state. At confirmation, brush.options parses the updated definition before invoking the existing library transaction.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The library update remains inside Session::edit. Returned failures restore the prior document and selection; successful edits record an undo snapshot outside an interaction, while an active interaction owns the later commit. Both the command implementation and this transaction mechanism are unchanged from the PR base. This supports ordinary failure rollback, not crash-recovery guarantees.

7771f91407 fixes Auto-Sliced on a corner whose legs are too short for the side tile. The tile is squeezed along the path but keeps its stroke width, and the mask around each slice was squeezed with the tile, so it cut off the stroke at the slice's far end. The mask's margins along the tile now grow by as much as the tile is squeezed. pattern_auto_sliced_masks_keep_the_stroke_of_a_squeezed_tile in crates/brush/src/tests.rs strokes an 8 pt square with a side tile that has a 4 pt stroke and fails without the change. The branch still merges cleanly with main at 9997ff0215.

… the side tile

Pattern Brush Options has a menu below the Outer Corner Tile and the Inner
Corner Tile. Each can be the brush's own corner art (Original), None, or one
of four tiles made from the side tile at each corner of the path:

- Auto-Centered stretches one side tile around the corner, centered on it.
- Auto-Between bends a side tile on each side into the corner, the two
  meeting on the corner's diagonal.
- Auto-Sliced lays a side tile on each side past the corner and masks it
at the diagonal, so the two meet like a mitered frame.
- Auto-Overlap lays a side tile on each side past the corner, overlapping.

The tiles are straight at the corner and follow the path towards the side
tiles, so they meet a curve that runs into the corner. A side tile taller
than the corner can reach is stretched along until the two sides meet. On a
short path, a corner's tile is squeezed along so that it covers at most the
path up to an open path's end and half way to the next corner, and its two sides still meet on the
corner's diagonal.

The definition stores the choice as `outer_source` and `inner_source`
(`none`, `autoCentered`, `autoBetween`, `autoSliced`, `autoOverlap`), which
`brush.options` sets. Corner art wins over a source. A brush saved without
a source draws as before: a kind of corner without art takes the other
kind's art. None leaves that kind of corner empty.

Docs: docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md.
OK used to save None for a corner tile the dialog showed as None because
the brush had no art or source for it, so that corner stopped drawing the
other kind of corner's art once the brush got some. It also copied the
art a corner borrows from the other kind of corner when that corner kept
its art. Now OK saves a corner tile's choice only when it was set from its
menu or with `ui.dialog.set`, or when the art it borrows goes away.
On a corner whose legs are too short for the side tile, the tile is
squeezed along the path but its stroke keeps its width. The mask round
each slice was squeezed with the tile, so it cut off the stroke at the
slice's far end. Its margins along the tile now grow by as much as the
tile is squeezed.
