What and why

Small differences in dock layout can produce canvas rectangles that differ
by fractions of a device pixel. This causes the same pointer position to
map to different document coordinates across otherwise equivalent layouts.

Round the canvas rectangle to physical pixels before storing and using it,
keeping rendering, inspection and pointer transforms consistent.

How it was tested

Updated against upstream main 443b31b1 after the canvas module split. The rounding remains in canvas.rs; the unchanged regression test now lives in crates/ui-egui/src/canvas/tests.rs. Upstream was merged to preserve the fork’s append-only published history.

Current revision (8a94f3af):

  • Native build: passed, using rustup run 1.99.1 cargo build --locked -p vectorcraft. The committed source tree is identical to the successfully built tree.
  • Full CI: passed, using rustup run 1.99.1 cargo xtask ci — all 12 steps passed.
  • Regression test and WASM validation: passed as part of the full CI run.

Previous revision (14ac3f1c): the regression test failed without the fix and passed with it. All CI checks preceding the final WASM check passed; that run stopped because the compiler could not find the wasm32-unknown-unknown target. These are historical results, not validation of the updated revision.

Checklist

  • Full cargo xtask ci passes on the current revision.
  • No new panic paths in shipped code; unwraps are confined to the regression test.
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code.
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md: no new assets.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Canvas boundaries now align with device pixels, improving consistency in canvas drawing and pointer-to-document positioning when the canvas falls between pixel boundaries.
    • Pointer mapping continues to update as the canvas changes size, including changes of a single device pixel, so pointer positions stay in sync with the displayed canvas.

Walkthrough

The canvas rectangle is rounded to device-pixel boundaries using the current pixels-per-point scale. Drawing and pointer transforms use the rounded rectangle. A regression test checks canvas rectangles and pointer document coordinates at three widths.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs: Imports GuiRounding to enable pixel-aligned rectangle rounding.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs: Rounds the computed canvas rectangle to the nearest device-pixel boundaries using the current pixels-per-point value; the aligned rectangle is then used for canvas rendering and interaction.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/canvas/tests.rs: Adds subpixel_dock_layout_does_not_change_pointer_document_coordinates, which creates and renders an app at each of three widths, records the canvas rectangle and document coordinates for a fixed pointer, and asserts equal results for the first two widths and different results for the third.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's two main sections, What and why and How it was tested, and it has a checklist. It explains the problem (fractional device-pixel differences in dock layouts cause the same pointer position to map to different document coordinates) and the fix (round the canvas rectangle to physical pixels before storing and using it). The testing section reports a native build, a full CI run, and a historical failing-then-passing regression test, and it states which results apply to which revision. The checklist items are marked. Two points are weaker: the description does not link an issue, and the regression test's contents are not described in the description itself. The description also has an extra note about merging upstream, which is not part of the template. Overall, the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Thanks @michael-holzheu, rounding the canvas rect to device pixels once, before it's stored, is a good fix. #4294 has since split crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs into modules, so this no longer applies. Could you rebase on main? The app.canvas_rect = Some(rect) line is still in canvas.rs (show), and the canvas tests now live in crates/ui-egui/src/canvas/tests.rs. I'll land it once it's rebased and CI passes.

cargo xtask ci is incomplete or unchecked on this PR. Run it end to end (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm), tick the checklist when green, and reply here with the outcome. That is required before any approve from here.

Compare the pointer coordinates after the resize.

The third width changes observed[2].0. The tuple inequality therefore passes even if observed[2].1 equals observed[0].1. Compare the .1 values so this assertion checks the stated mapping change. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Full local CI now passes on commit 8a94f3af515d3f111b87fd69287b504b33afb5b3 (macOS, Apple Silicon).

Command:

rustup run 1.99.1 cargo xtask ci

Result (exit code 0):

CI summary: all 12 steps passed (fmt, clippy, test, doctests, no-bundled-fonts, pdf-deps, assets, brands, cursors, i18n-report, layers, wasm)

The regression test canvas::tests::subpixel_dock_layout_does_not_change_pointer_document_coordinates passed. No source changes were needed.
