G10: Use the shared wgpu fork for OCLP Macs - #4289
Proposes the shared wgpu 30.0.1 OCLP compatibility fork, pinned to 21c08e23, with backports of gfx-rs/wgpu#10725 and gfx-rs/wgpu#10731. VectorCraft preserves configured internal indirect-call validation instead of disabling it at startup; adapter recovery and the Windows FXC default remain unchanged.
The ownership proposal, reproduction commands and limits are in docs/oclp-wgpu-fork.md, matching storytold/craft-launcher#917 and storytold/pdfcraft#4858. Maintainers can host the reviewed branch in storytold/wgpu before changing the pin.
Related context: #651 is closed and reports a different NVIDIA configuration; this does not claim to validate that machine. The separate repeated-probe delay (gfx-rs/wgpu#10742, gfx-rs/wgpu#10743) is documented and is not fixed by this pin.
How it was tested
M4 Max: all 12 cargo xtask ci gates pass, including 10,491 workspace tests (14 skipped), strict Clippy and wasm. Native app/CLI builds, a Metal UI smoke check and all 182 serial app tests also pass. The validation regression was observed red before the fix and green afterward.
OCLP MacBookPro11,5 / macOS 15.8.1: native app/CLI builds, strict app Clippy and all 182 app tests pass. AMD R9 M370X and Intel Iris Pro both render the original SVG correctly, verified through adapter logs, native UI captures and rendered artwork. Automatic MSL 3.2 → 3.1 fallback and internal indirect-call validation were enabled.
The initial Intel test command timed out compiling; the unfiltered retry passed. External Metal layers were disabled per process on OCLP. Cargo reports three unchanged unused egui patch entries; these are not Clippy failures. The shared backport's earlier full wgpu suite still has eight failures, detailed in the proposal.
Use the shared wgpu 30.0.1 fork and preserve configured internal
indirect-call validation, Metal options, backend selection and the
Windows FXC default. Add a regression for the instance configuration.
Document the ownership proposal, hardware results and remaining probe
delay, and record the contributor's public-profile credit preference.
Validation: cargo xtask ci (all 12 gates; 10,491 tests passed, 14 skipped),
182 serial app tests on M4 and Intel, native app/CLI builds on both Macs,
strict app Clippy on OCLP, and inspected M4/AMD/Iris native SVG/UI captures.
The initial Intel test compilation timed out; its unfiltered retry passed.
AI assistance: implementation, validation and description prepared with
OpenAI Codex at the contributor's request.
The repository now resolves wgpu from a pinned compatibility fork. Instance setup passes the selected backends and DX12 shader compiler to a configuration helper. New documentation records the proposal’s validation, hardware results, limitations, and roadmap status.

Summary
Fork dependency and instance configuration Cargo.toml, apps/vectorcraft/src/gpu.rs, apps/vectorcraft/src/main.rs, docs/development.md
Cargo pins a wgpu fork. Instance setup uses a helper to set the selected backends and DX12 compiler. A test checks that other descriptor settings remain unchanged. Development documentation describes the validation variable’s enable and disable values.
Compatibility proposal and qualification docs/oclp-wgpu-fork.md, docs/hardware-parity.md, ROADMAP.md, docs/roadmap.md, contributors/people.toml
The proposal documents fork details, validation steps, reported results, and untested cases. Hardware-parity and roadmap documents link to the proposal. A contributor entry is added.
storytold/craft-launcher#884: The issue describes an OCLP Intel Mac launch crash when the device compiler rejects MSL 3.2; the proposal documents MSL version fallback for OCLP.
storytold/designcraft#1273: The issue describes a startup panic caused by an MSL 3.2 compiler rejection on Intel HD 5000; the proposal documents the corresponding fallback.
storytold/craft-launcher#841: The issue describes an OCLP launch failure when the GPU compiler accepts MSL 3.1 but wgpu selects MSL 3.2; the proposal documents the corresponding fallback.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 033e5
The documented OCLP smoke check cannot run as written, reducing confidence in the reported qualification.

Explanation
The title "G10: Use the shared wgpu fork for OCLP Macs" matches the main change. The PR points the wgpu dependency at a shared fork (ITJamie/wgpu-fork at revision 21c08e23) and documents it for OCLP-patched Macs. The title names the main change and is specific. The "G10:" prefix is a tracker label that a teammate may not recognize, but it does not make the title misleading.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template structure. It has the required 'What and why' and 'How it was tested' sections, and it includes the checklist. The 'What and why' section explains the change, the wgpu fork pin, the preserved validation behaviour, and the linked proposal. The 'How it was tested' section lists the M4 Max and OCLP test results, with the commands and hardware. Checklist items are marked. The description does not link an issue number for the change itself. It cites related issues (#651, gfx-rs/wgpu#10742, #10743) but does not state a direct tracking issue for G10.

Run the executable that the documented build produces.
After the cargo build command at Line 48, ./vectorcraft does not refer to Cargo’s build output in a normal checkout. The OCLP smoke-check command therefore stops before it can test the adapter. Use ./target/debug/vectorcraft for the default target directory, or use cargo run --locked -p vectorcraft -- to let Cargo locate the executable. (doc.rust-lang.org)

Thanks @ITJamie. Pinning a shared wgpu fork is a dependency and cross-app decision (it lines up with storytold/craft-launcher#917 and storytold/pdfcraft#4858), so I'm holding this for the project owner. It also needs a rebase on main: #4294 split apps/vectorcraft/src/main.rs (the startup code is now in app.rs and host_services.rs).
