selection when the user has selected another object.

NodeKind::Compound. Keep direct path selection valid, and align this check with
the existing parent handling in deactivate and the select.set logic.

Review
I reviewed the full diff at head 5d14426. I haven't built it or run the tests locally. CI is green.
Major
-
crates/tools/src/direct.rsfill_occlusionhides handles of the selected path.- The filled object topmost under the cursor now removes every other path from hit-testing, the selected path included.
- Example: a selected path's Bézier handle sits over a background rectangle.
hit_testreturns the rectangle, sohit_handleskips the handle and the user can't drag it. - This applies to every filled object, open or closed. The PR description says open-path fill only.
- The "selected first" ordering in
hit_anchor(#1508) is gone. fill_occlusionruns a fullhit_testand is called several times per pointer event, including hover.- The only test covers an anchor behind the fill.
- Suggested fix: never occlude paths in
cx.selection, and compute occlusion once per event. Please add a test for a selected path's handle over a background rect.
-
crates/tools/src/pen.rssendssubpathonly whensi > 0.- With
si == 0the engine falls back to the last open subpath forappendAnchorandclose, and to all subpaths forreverse. - Example: continue from the end of subpath 0 on a path whose subpath 1 is also open. The new anchor is appended to subpath 1, and
closecloses subpath 1. path.reverse {}flips every subpath, which changes the holes in closed siblings under even-odd and non-zero fill.- This case is easier to reach now that
endpoint_onlooks at every subpath. - Suggested fix: always send
subpath, and make the engine honoursubpath: 0.
- With
-
crates/engine/src/cmd/clipboard.rsextract_direct_selection: is this intended?- Pen drawing and
path.appendAnchorleavesel.anchors = {id: {last anchor}}. - Draw a path, then Cmd+C straight away: only the last anchor and its neighbouring segment are copied, not the whole path. Cmd+X deletes only that anchor.
- This may be the intended partial-selection behaviour, as in Illustrator. Can you confirm?
- Separately, the piece builder forces
FillRule::NonZero,live: Noneandclipping: false, so the source fill rule and live effects are lost.
- Pen drawing and

path.rsjoin, single-path branch hard-codes subpath 0 (unwrap_or(0)). The old code usedfind(|s| !s.closed). If subpath 0 is closed and subpath 1 is open, Cmd+J fails with "path is already closed". This is a regression.path.rsdelete_anchorssplits inconsistently.- Cutting a segment on an open path, or deleting anything on a closed path, produces separate sibling nodes.
- Deleting an anchor that splits an open path keeps the pieces as subpaths of one node.
- Splitting a compound member through
replace_with_pieceshas no test.
path.rsjoinhas other problems.- Two near-identical nearest-pair loops. The loop over
remainingremovesbeven whenbstill has other subpaths. x.anchors.len() - 1injoin_twounderflows if the subpath is empty.- A direct selection that doesn't name exactly two path ends is silently ignored, and all selected paths are joined.
- Two near-identical nearest-pair loops. The loop over
select.rs:- The new
wholecondition (sel.anchors.is_empty() && sel.objects.len() <= 1) changes Shift-click toggling when several objects are selected. - Toggling a segment off removes its end anchors even if they were selected on their own.
- The new
edit.rsclear:let _ = d.remove(p)ignores errors when removing empty compound parents, and the selection isn't updated afterwards.
Nits
clipboard.rs: thecompound_parentlookup and appearance inheritance are duplicated in both branches ofClipboard::copy.pen.rsopen_end_at: theNodeKind::Grouparm is probably dead code, since the hit leaf is never a group.object.rscompound_make: the1e-6area threshold is a magic number.
Suggestion: split this PR
This PR has 8 unrelated fixes in one diff of about 2.8k lines, which makes it hard to review and hard to revert. I'd suggest three PRs:
Each one could then come with its own tests.
Overall: changes requested. Please fix 1 and 2, confirm 3, and add the missing copy/cut tests from 4.

LGTM — CI green, earlier CodeRabbit findings (incl. the Major one on subpath selection/removal in join) verified fixed against current code. Non-blocking nits:
path.rsreverse: out-of-rangesubpathis silently skipped, whereasappendAnchor/closeerror. Worth making consistent.path.rsdelete_anchors: the new.filter(|s| s.anchors.len() >= 2)calls are redundant with theretainthat follows.object.rs:MIN_WINDING_AREAchange incompound_makeisn't tied to the linked issues — fine, but scope creep.join: >2 direct-selected ends now errors ("select exactly two path ends to join"). Previously a Direct select-all joined all open paths — worth a line in the PR notes.joindocs sayendsdefaults to "direct-selected ends if any, else nearest pair", but a single direct-selected end falls through to nearest-pair joining of everything. Please double-check wording/intent.join_nearesthas no distance cap, so far-apart paths still join.
…ontinues Clicking the first anchor of an open path inside a compound path made the Pen select the compound and then reverse through the selection, which `paths_in` expands to every member path: the clicked subpath of each sibling flipped too, and under the non-zero fill rule a hole became a fill. Name the path in the reverse instead. The adjacent continuation of an already selected path is unaffected: it issues no selection change, so its selection-addressed reverse still means that path. Regressions: an engine test continues a compound member with two open subpaths at its first anchor and holds the member's other subpath and the sibling member byte-identical (anchors, handles, closed flags); a tool test pins the emitted `path.reverse` parameters to the member's id.
|
Here's the Since @benandez's review I added One behaviour change: clicking an endpoint of a path with several open subpaths now continues that subpath instead of deleting the anchor. The fill occlusion and clipboard points went to #3903 and #3907. |

Two join cases still need attention before this can merge:
Both cases reproduce in command tests; the compound continuation and undo control passes. |
