text: the Han fallback takes an explicit CjkPreference, held on the database - #1424
Han ideographs are shared by Japanese, Chinese and Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese differ only in the glyph forms, so the interface language — not the character — has to pick the face. Two things stood in the way:
SYSTEM_FALLBACKS lists Chinese family names and all of them are Simplified (PingFang SC, Heiti SC, STHeiti, Microsoft YaHei, Noto Sans CJK SC, WenQuanYi Micro Hei), with no Traditional face at all, so a Traditional Chinese interface (zh-hant is one of the catalogs in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/) kept the Simplified forms.
script_families keyed on the character's Unicode script, which cannot tell the two apart — they share their code points — and put PingFang SC before Hiragino Sans, so a Japanese interface could take a Chinese face for kanji.
The fix takes the shape the rest of the family settled on (pdfcraft's CjkPreference, photocraft's per-script lists):
CjkPreference { SimplifiedChinese, TraditionalChinese, Japanese } with for_language(code): Traditional for zh-hant / zh-TW / zh-HK / zh-MO, Simplified for any other Chinese code including a bare zh, Japanese for ja, and Simplified for a language that does not choose — which is the order this fallback had before the choice existed, so nothing changes for languages that do not care.
The preference lives on the database (FontDb::set_cjk_preference / cjk_preference), not in a process-global, so a test can build its own database and ask it: FontDb::with_font_dirs(Vec::new()) then script_families(preference, '中').
The frame loop sets it from the resolved interface language, on the first frame and again when Preferences ▸ Interface Language changes.
One list per script: Simplified (PingFang SC, Heiti SC, STHeiti, Microsoft YaHei, SimSun, Hiragino Sans GB, …), Traditional (PingFang TC, Heiti TC, Hiragino Sans CNS, Microsoft JhengHei, MingLiU, Noto Sans CJK TC, …) and Japanese (Hiragino Sans, Yu Gothic, Meiryo, …), with no other script's faces in any of them. SYSTEM_FALLBACKS is untouched and still answers every other character.
disabling the Script::Han arm makes the new test fail, so it has teeth
This supersedes #1421, which took the same idea but carried the preference in a module-level static and a raw tag string; closing that one in favour of this. #992 touches crates/text/src/fontdb.rs too, but this only adds a field, the lists and one match arm, so it should merge — I will rebase if #992 lands first. And Korean is the same class of gap: ko has a catalog and its Han characters take the Simplified list (as before this change); a Korean list is a small follow-up if you want one.

New Features
Added language-aware font preferences for Han characters, with support for Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese.
Font fallback now uses the selected preference when no already-loaded font can display a Han character. Other characters and loaded fonts retain their existing behavior.
The interface applies a font preference based on its current language.
Thanks @FeiLiuEM. Holding the preference on the database instead of in a static is the right shape, and the lists read well. I can't merge it as it is, for two reasons. This is from reading the diff; I did not build or run it.
1. It changes what existing documents draw. Release builds embed craft-fonts, and the document database loads its Japanese faces (craft_fonts::document_fonts, Shippori Mincho first). So today a Han character the run's font lacks falls back to that bundled Mincho, the same on every machine; japanese_text_uses_the_craft_fonts_mincho_after_the_bundled_fonts pins it. With this change fallback_for hands the preference's list to load_families before it looks at the loaded faces, so on a machine that has Microsoft YaHei or PingFang SC (Yu Gothic or Hiragino Sans under a Japanese interface) that system face is loaded and wins over the bundled one. The existing test doesn't notice, because its database has no system fonts. Without craft-fonts it changes too: under an English interface a Han character used to take a face the document had already loaded, and now a Simplified Chinese system face is loaded for it. A language that doesn't choose should keep exactly today's lookup (an empty list, not the Simplified one), and a test with a loaded face that covers the character should show that the lists don't outrank it, unless we decide they should.
2. Document text following the interface language needs the owner's decision. With this, the same file draws and exports differently under a Japanese and a Chinese interface, and the CLI and MCP (which have no interface language) differ from the app. I found nothing in Illustrator's public documentation on which font its missing-glyph fallback picks, so there is no reference to follow. One option is to apply the preference only to the interface's own text and leave document text to the language set on the text itself; that is not mine to choose.
Smaller points for a next revision:
Kana still go through loaded_fallback, so under a Japanese interface the kanji and kana of one word can come from two faces.
Changing the language at runtime doesn't bump generation, so layouts already cached keep their old faces.
The first frame sets the preference twice (the ui_language branch already runs on it).
I'm leaving this open for the owner's call on point 2. If you'd like to talk it through, the Discord is at https://discord.gg/artcraft.
Thank you for the careful read — and for saying up front that it is from the diff, which lets me answer the two blocking points separately.
1. You are right, and the mapping is my bug. I mapped a language that does not choose onto SimplifiedChinese because that is the order the old SYSTEM_FALLBACKS walk happened to have, and I missed that the document path consults the already-loaded faces first — so a list on that path can outrank the bundled Mincho, with or without craft-fonts. A language that does not choose should get no preference at all (the empty list), and I will do exactly that, so today's lookup is untouched for anyone who does not pick a Chinese or Japanese interface.
For the choosing languages I will add the test you describe — a database with a loaded face that covers the character, against the preference — so the behaviour is pinned and visible rather than implied. If you and the owner decide a loaded face should win, that is one line; I would rather have it written down either way than leave it to a diff reader.
2. Agreed, that one is the owner's call, and you make a good case for it. Interface-only is the option I would pick too: the CLI and MCP have no interface language, so a preference that reaches document text makes three tools disagree about the same file, which is worse than a glyph form being the historical one. If that is the decision, the change does not belong in the shared fallback path at all — it belongs where the interface's own text is laid out — and I am happy to move it there instead of deleting the PR.
The three smaller points — I accept all of them: kana and kanji of one word must not come from two faces (so kana need the same route, or the limitation needs naming); a runtime language change has to bump generation or cached layouts keep the old faces; and the first frame double-set comes out (the ui_language branch already runs on it).
I will push 1 and the three smaller points unless you would rather wait for the owner's call on 2 and take them together — say which and I will follow it. Thank you again for catching the document-side change; that is exactly the part I could not see from my side. I have joined the Discord as well, and I am happy to talk it through there if that is easier.

Please keep existing documents drawing the same: preference-driven Han fallback must not load a system CJK face ahead of already-loaded / craft-fonts faces. A language that does not choose should keep today's fallback order. Adjust the load order (and cover it with a test that includes system fonts or an equivalent), then reply.
Both points are in the new commit, re-applied on top of 0.11.0: a git fetch had left this branch 531 commits behind, so I rewrote the change on current main instead of rebasing it.
A language that does not choose keeps today's order.CjkPreference gains an Unspecified variant and that is now the default. for_language returns it for anything that names no Han script (en, ko, uk…), its family list is empty, and the lookup then walks exactly the order it had before the preference existed — the loaded faces, then SYSTEM_FALLBACKS.
A preference never loads a system face ahead of a loaded one.fallback_for now reads:
the shaping lists (script_families: Thai, Lao, Khmer, Myanmar) — unchanged, since a generic face renders those wrong rather than differently, so they keep their precedence;
loaded_fallback — any face the database already draws with, craft-fonts included;
the preference's own families, loaded only if nothing above covered the character;
SYSTEM_FALLBACKS.
The preference therefore decides which installed family is loaded when nothing loaded covers the character, and it can no longer outrank one that does.
Tests — three, in crates/text/src/fontdb.rs, and I ran each with the change reverted to check it actually fails:
the language mapping, including en, ko and "" → Unspecified with an empty family list;
a preference set after a lookup does not change which face answers, and no family from the preference list becomes newly loaded while a loaded face already covered the character. That is the requirement as you stated it, asserted that way because which face wins depends on what the machine has installed;
with nothing loaded to answer with, a Traditional preference is served a Traditional family and a Simplified one a Simplified family.
cargo test -p vectorcraft-text — 234 passed; cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-text --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo check -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets and cargo fmt --all --check are clean.
One note for the test design: the probe character is found by asking the database rather than hardcoded, because the coverage of installed faces is not what it looks like from outside — on this machine Noto Sans CJK TC turned out not to cover 页 or 東, and the general list answered with a Korean face.
One more detail on the second test, so you can judge what it does and does not prove. Its failure mode cannot be produced by moving the preference block in front of loaded_fallback: load_families begins with !self.is_loaded(fam), and the Noto CJK collection arrives whole from one .ttc, so on this machine every sibling of the preferred family is already loaded by the time a preference is set — the block is a no-op in either position. The test therefore pins the requirement structurally (which face answers, and that no family from the preference list becomes newly loaded) rather than by mutation; the mutations that do fail it are the two that change the semantics: reverting Unspecified to SimplifiedChinese, and deleting the preference step.
Rebased on current main and re-verified (665292e1).
fallback_for_style gained weight/italic upstream, so the branch's call sites — and the test's loaded_fallback probe — take them now. The order this change introduces is unchanged: script families, then the faces already loaded, then the preference, then the system list.
cargo test -p vectorcraft-text: the three tests pass. One failure in that crate is not from this branch: tests_devanagari::syllables_map_to_their_source_bytes_and_caret_stops fails identically on a pristine origin/main worktree on this machine, so it is pre-existing on main.
Teeth re-run after the rebase: making for_language return SimplifiedChinese for a language that names no Han script fails the_interface_language_picks_the_han_script_or_none (left: SimplifiedChinese, right: Unspecified).
The approval from 2026-10-15 was invalidated when the branch went conflicting, so this needs a fresh look — the diff is the same three files.

Walkthrough
The font database now stores a CJK preference derived from the UI language. For Han-script fallback, it checks loaded faces first, then tries families for the configured preference before continuing to system fallback.

Issue 2689 reports that Han fallback does not select faces by UI language or region. This change adds Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese family preferences based on the UI language, but does not address the reported variation-axis behavior or add Korean Hangul support.
Suggested reviewers:messhias, bflatastic
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b9b74
Changing the interface language can leave Han fallback using the previous language’s preference. Update the preference when the language changes before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to b9b74
Font selection retains existing access permissions and loaded-font precedence. However, the new automatic preference path can load matching installed fonts without the generic fallback size limit, creating a conditional process-memory risk.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: The new automatic CJK preference branch can fully read a matching cataloged font that generic fallback would skip above 40 MiB. A sufficiently large preferred font in a configured source could exhaust process memory. This is conditional on control of that font and absence of loaded glyph coverage; unbounded explicit-family loading already existed.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The conditional resource-exhaustion exposure is within the native application process and its shared font database. It requires a discoverable preferred-family font under attacker influence; character input alone does not supply a file or arbitrary path through this API.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A conditional path is: a matching large font enters an existing configured source; a CJK interface and uncovered character select it; load_cataloged reaches whole-file reading before the generic size check. Existing unbounded named-family loading and the need to influence font contents limit the incremental risk. This is not a verified document-only attack.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The inspected installation UI requires selected files and an Add Fonts action. The existing engine command accepts only prior search hits, checks file-read access, and applies copy limits. These are counterevidence to automatic document-driven installation, but do not establish every host's command authorization or font-directory trust model.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Resource containment differs between automatic loading routes: generic catalog-file fallback checks 40 MiB, while family-directed loading delegates to whole-file reading without that check. The latter behavior predates the PR, but the new preference branch adds an automatic caller.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define a shared resource budget for automatic font loading, including preferred families, and enforce it at the file-reading boundary. Choose limits compatible with legitimate CJK collections rather than assuming the current generic threshold fits every family.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the Han fallback now takes an explicit CjkPreference that is stored on the database. The changeset adds CjkPreference, stores it on FontDb, and uses it in fallback_for_style. The title is specific and matches the core change, though it is somewhat long and uses a 'text:' prefix with a colon-separated clause.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the problem (Simplified-only Chinese system fallbacks and script-keyed lists that cannot distinguish Chinese variants), the approach (CjkPreference with for_language, stored on FontDb, set from the UI language), and verification (fmt, clippy, cargo test, cargo check, and a mutation check). It does not follow the repository template exactly: the 'What and why' and 'How it was tested' headings are not used, and the Checklist section is missing entirely. The checklist items (cargo xtask ci, no panics in shipped code, clean-room statement, ASSETS.md rows for new assets) are not addressed. The test results also conflict with the objectives: the description says 220 tests, while the later reports cite 395 and 405.
Resolution
Add the template's section headings: 'What and why' and 'How it was tested'. Move the existing motivation and verification content under them. Add the 'Checklist' section and complete or address each item: confirm 'cargo xtask ci' passes (the description lists only partial checks), confirm no unwrap/expect/panic/unchecked indexing in shipped code, confirm the clean-room statement, and state whether any new assets were added (and whether they appear in ASSETS.md). Update the test count (220 versus the 395/405 reported later) so it matches the final revision.

Restrict preference-family loading to Han characters.
If no loaded face covers a non-Han character, the lookup still passes that character to the CJK preference families. load_families can load installed CJK fonts before the general system fallback runs. A covering CJK font can then become the fallback for that non-Han character. Gate the preference-family step on the character’s Han script; leave other characters on the existing system-fallback path.

The preference step now runs only for the Han-script group (is_han_script: Han ideographs, kana, bopomofo, the compatibility and extension blocks). Two notes on where the line is drawn:
Hangul is excluded. It has its own families and its own probe, and a Chinese preference face drawing it is the failure you describe.
For every other character the step is skipped, so load_families can no longer load a CJK face ahead of the script-aware list.
Verification: cargo test -p vectorcraft-text — the new test passes, and the crate's one other failure (tests_devanagari::syllables_map_to_their_source_bytes_and_caret_stops) fails identically on a pristine origin/main worktree here, so it is pre-existing on main. cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-text --all-targets -- -D warnings clean. The gate is asserted through the predicate: which family a given character resolves to depends on what is installed, so the test pins the classification rather than the loaded face.

Confirm the interface-language policy for document text.
When no loaded face covers a kana character, fallback_for_style can load a matching Chinese preference family before SYSTEM_FALLBACKS. Therefore, a Chinese interface language can make document kana use a Chinese family.
This is a policy decision, not a required code change. Confirm that interface language should affect document fallback before merge. SYSTEM_FALLBACKS does not list Japanese fonts first; the concern is only that the preference step runs before that general list.

On the policy question: yes, deliberately — and it is the decision the family already made in effectcraft (#312, #1015), where the merged doc comment reads: "Process-global, like the environment it replaces: every layout in the process follows it, so composition text is drawn with the same language's Han forms as the interface, not only the interface chrome."
Two limits keep it narrow here:
the preference only decides which system face gets loaded when nothing loaded covers the character. A face the database already draws with is never displaced (a_preference_does_not_outrank_a_face_that_is_already_loaded), so an existing document keeps the faces it already has; the change only reaches characters the document had no face for at all, where the app used to take whatever the system list found first.
Unspecified is the default and names no family, so an English (or any non-CJK) interface leaves the lookup exactly as it was.
On kana specifically: the alternative is not more Japanese. SYSTEM_FALLBACKS starts with Helvetica Neue/Arial/Segoe UI/Noto Sans, then PingFang SC — beforeHiragino Sans — so kana would land on a Chinese-side face there too. Following the interface language at least makes it the language the user chose, and on a Japanese interface the preference is the Japanese face, which is the right answer.
@Messhias — the policy call is yours. The code matches effectcraft's merged behaviour as it stands; if you would rather the preference stop at Han ideographs and leave kana on the general list, that is a one-line change to is_han_script.
Rebased on current main (1750 commits behind, the conflict was lib.rs and the two test modules; the preference is now set in ui_setup, where main installs the fonts). cargo test -p vectorcraft-text (395, 0 failed), cargo check -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets and clippy are clean, and it is mergeable again — the approval from 10-20 still holds, it just needs the merge.

Include halfwidth kana and supplementary Han ideographs in the preference range.
When no loaded face covers U+FF76 (halfwidth katakana) or U+30000 (a Han ideograph), is_han_script returns false. fallback_for_style then skips the selected CJK preference and uses the general fallback order. Add the relevant Unicode ranges and boundary tests so these characters follow the stated preference policy.

Invalidate font-dependent render caches when the CJK preference changes.
When the UI language changes after a document is rendered, set_cjk_preference changes cjk without changing FontDb::generation. Renderer::text_geom_of clears its cached glyph geometry only when that generation changes, so existing text can keep the layout produced before the new preference. This occurs when the previous lookup loaded no covering face; already-loaded faces intentionally remain preferred.

Update FontDb::set_cjk_preference to increment FontDb’s generation only when the
preference actually changes, so render caches invalidate after a change while
repeated assignments remain no-ops. Preserve the existing lock-poison recovery
behavior and leave loaded-face preference behavior unchanged.

is_han_script now covers halfwidth katakana (U+FF65–U+FF9F) and the whole supplementary ideographic area (U+20000–U+3FFFF, so U+30000 too). The boundary test grew with it: カ, U+20000, U+30000 and U+3FFFF are in; U+FF64 (the halfwidth punctuation just below the kana block) and U+40000 are not.
set_cjk_preference bumps the generation only when the preference actually changes. It did not bump it at all before, so a language switch would not have invalidated the render caches either — now it does, once, and the per-frame assignment is a no-op.
cargo test -p vectorcraft-text (395, 0 failed) and clippy -D warnings are clean.
@Messhias the branch was rebased through #4294's module split, so the diff has a new shape (+260/−5, 6 files); the force-push dismissed the earlier approval, sorry about that — a re-review when you have a moment.
What moved, and nothing else changed:
CjkPreference, for_language, the three per-script family lists and is_han_script live in crates/text/src/fontdb/cjk.rs (new file, the module keeps one concern per file like the rest of fontdb/).
The field and its accessors - set_cjk_preference / cjk_preference - are on FontDb in fontdb.rs and fontdb/db.rs. The generation still only moves when the preference actually changes, so the per-frame assignment is free and a language switch invalidates the render caches once.
The preference step is in fallback_for_style in fontdb/lookup.rs: the shaping lists first, then the faces already loaded, then the preference's families, then system_fallback. A preference never loads a system face ahead of one a document already uses.
The UI pass sets it in app.rs's ui_setup, before the first set_fonts, from the resolved interface language.
The two tests that need real system fonts moved next to load_families in fontdb/lookup.rs; the pure ones (language → preference, the Han-script group, one list per script) are in cjk.rs.
cargo test -p vectorcraft-text 405 passed, 0 failed — the three preference tests ran against the installed fonts rather than skipping. clippy --all-targets -D warnings and cargo check -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets are clean, fmt --check too.

Sync the CJK preference after interface fonts are ready.
When a user changes interfaceLanguage in Preferences, ui_language() changes, but fonts_ready keeps this setter from running again. The database retains the previous preference, so later Han fallback uses the old language. Move the preference update outside if !self.fonts_ready; keep interface-font installation inside the condition. The setter already avoids a generation change when the value is unchanged. Fixed — the preference update moved out of if !self.fonts_ready. It now runs every pass: on the first pass it still precedes set_fonts, so it decides which system face is loaded, and after a change of interfaceLanguage in Preferences it reaches the database on the next pass. The setter only bumps the generation when the value actually changes, so the per-pass call costs nothing.
A guard test pins the placement: the_han_preference_is_set_outside_the_fonts_ready_branch reads ui_setup and fails when set_cjk_preference appears after the fonts_ready guard. Moving the call back inside fails it with "set_cjk_preference sits inside the fonts_ready branch: a language changed after the first frame would keep the old face", so the next edit cannot quietly reintroduce it.
cargo test -p vectorcraft-text 405 passed, cargo fmt --check and cargo check -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets clean.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the head of the diff: the Han fallback takes an explicit CjkPreference, held on the font database. A new cjk module exports CjkPreference and FontDb holds it in an RwLock ("which script's Han ideographs the interface asked for", set by FontDb::set_cjk_preference). Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean share most of their code points, so a fallback that picks a face without being told which language the text is gets the wrong glyph shapes for some characters, and an explicit preference replaces an implicit guess. Holding it in the database behind an RwLock is simple; readers (every shaping call) take a read lock, so the cost is low, and a poisoned lock should not panic. A document's own language tag, where the file has one, should win over the interface preference, and the PR should say which has priority. I read the module header only. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
…atabase
Han ideographs are shared by Japanese, Chinese and Korean and Simplified and Traditional Chinese
differ only in the glyph forms, so the interface language - not the character - has to pick the face.
`SYSTEM_FALLBACKS` lists Chinese names and all of them are Simplified, so a Traditional Chinese
interface kept the Simplified forms and a Japanese one could take a Chinese face for kanji.
`CjkPreference { Unspecified, SimplifiedChinese, TraditionalChinese, Japanese }` - the shape pdfcraft
settled on - lives in `fontdb/cjk.rs`, is held on the database, and the UI pass sets it from the
resolved interface language. A language that names no Han script gets `Unspecified`, whose family
list is empty, so a document opened in it draws exactly as it did before.
The lookup order follows the review: the shaping lists (`script_families`) keep their precedence,
then the faces the database already draws with, and only then the preference's families, which decide
which *installed* family is loaded when nothing loaded covers the character. A preference therefore
never loads a system face ahead of one a document already uses. One list per script, with no
Simplified face in the Traditional or the Japanese one; halfwidth kana and the supplementary
ideographic planes count as Han, Hangul does not.
Rebased onto the module split (storytold#4294): the enum and `is_han_script` are in `fontdb/cjk.rs`, the
preference step is in `fontdb/lookup.rs`, and the UI pass wires it in `app.rs`'s `ui_setup`.
Verified on Linux: cargo fmt --all --check, cargo test -p vectorcraft-text (405, 0 failed, the three
preference tests ran against the installed fonts), clippy -p vectorcraft-text -p vectorcraft-ui-egui
--all-targets -D warnings and cargo check -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets are clean. Reverting
`Unspecified` to `SimplifiedChinese`, and deleting the preference step, each fail a test; the "does
not outrank a loaded face" requirement is asserted structurally because `load_families` is a no-op
once the family is loaded.
Thanks for reading it. On the precedence question, now written into the module header so it survives the next reader:
The preference is the last word, not the first. A document's own fonts are looked up before it, so text set in a named family (or in a family the document's stylesheet loads) keeps that family. The preference only decides which installed family is loaded when nothing loaded covers the character, and only for Han, kana and bopomofo. Within that step the order is: the shaping script's families, then the faces the database already draws with, then the preference, then the general SYSTEM_FALLBACKS list.
On the document's own language, you are right that it exists — DocumentSetup::language — but it is per document while this preference is on FontDb, which is process-wide. Two documents open at once with different setup languages therefore share one preference, and a document that relies on system fallback follows the interface language rather than its setup language. That is deliberate for now: the preference is what the interface asks for, and a document that names its fonts never reaches this path. Making DocumentSetup::language win would need the preference per document rather than per process — a different change, and one that belongs with whoever owns the document model's language handling.
No exact-head CI on this repo: vectorcraft-text has 405 tests, I ran them on the rebased head (0 failed, the three preference tests ran against the installed fonts rather than skipping), plus fmt --check, clippy --all-targets -D warnings for vectorcraft-text and vectorcraft-ui-egui, and cargo check -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets.

Han ideographs are shared by Japanese, Chinese and Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese differ only in the glyph forms, so the interface language — not the character — has to pick the face. Two things stood in the way:
SYSTEM_FALLBACKSlists Chinese family names and all of them are Simplified (PingFang SC,Heiti SC,STHeiti,Microsoft YaHei,Noto Sans CJK SC,WenQuanYi Micro Hei), with no Traditional face at all, so a Traditional Chinese interface (zh-hantis one of the catalogs incrates/ui-egui/src/i18n/) kept the Simplified forms.script_familieskeyed on the character's Unicode script, which cannot tell the two apart — they share their code points — and putPingFang SCbeforeHiragino Sans, so a Japanese interface could take a Chinese face for kanji. The fix takes the shape the rest of the family settled on (pdfcraft's
CjkPreference, photocraft's per-script lists):CjkPreference { SimplifiedChinese, TraditionalChinese, Japanese }withfor_language(code): Traditional forzh-hant/zh-TW/zh-HK/zh-MO, Simplified for any other Chinese code including a barezh, Japanese forja, and Simplified for a language that does not choose — which is the order this fallback had before the choice existed, so nothing changes for languages that do not care.FontDb::set_cjk_preference/cjk_preference), not in a process-global, so a test can build its own database and ask it:FontDb::with_font_dirs(Vec::new())thenscript_families(preference, '中').PingFang SC,Heiti SC,STHeiti,Microsoft YaHei,SimSun,Hiragino Sans GB, …), Traditional (PingFang TC,Heiti TC,Hiragino Sans CNS,Microsoft JhengHei,MingLiU,Noto Sans CJK TC, …) and Japanese (Hiragino Sans,Yu Gothic,Meiryo, …), with no other script's faces in any of them.SYSTEM_FALLBACKSis untouched and still answers every other character.Verified on Linux:
