What this changes

Before: sign_trust and x509::load_certificates only accepted single DER certificates, PEM CERTIFICATE blocks, and .p12. A .p7b/.p7c file, which is how certificate authorities, Windows and Acrobat export a chain, failed with "no certificate found". For example, the ICP-Brasil chain published by ITI could not be imported this way. docs/file-format-parity.md listed this as ".p7c/.p7b bundles not read".

After: load_certificates also reads PKCS#7 certificate bundles, meaning a degenerate SignedData with no signers (RFC 5652 §5.2). It reads them in DER and as PEM PKCS7 or CMS blocks. Every X.509 certificate in the bundle is returned. Signers and CRLs, if present, are ignored.

How:

  • cms::certificate_bundle is a small standalone reader that reuses the existing BER parser and the certificates field handling, factored out of SignedData::parse as carried_certificates.
  • load_certificates tries a single certificate first, then a bundle. A file that is neither still reports the certificate's own parse error.
  • PEM END lines must now match their BEGIN label, and a BEGIN of another type (for example a private key) no longer leaks into the next block.
  • sign_trust itself is unchanged apart from its description.

Related: #2613 (user trust import in the UI), #123 (Acrobat .p7c not accepted). This is complementary to #622: that PR also edits load_certificates (stricter PEM handling) but doesn't read bundles. Whichever of the two lands second needs a small rebase, and I'm happy to do it on this side.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on pdfcraft-sign and pdfcraft-automation (--all-targets)
  • tests pass: cargo test -p pdfcraft-sign (119 passed) and cargo test -p pdfcraft-automation --test automation digital_ids_signing
  • cargo xtask layers / assets: not applicable, no crate boundary or asset changes

Tests.

  • crates/sign/tests/crypto.rs::certificates_load_from_pkcs7_bundles checks:
    • a DER bundle with the leaf and the root;
    • the same bundle armoured as PKCS7 and as CMS, after a private-key block and a plain certificate;
    • a mismatched END label, which is rejected;
    • an empty bundle, which is an error;
    • a non-SignedData ContentInfo, which is an error;
    • every truncation of the bundle, which gives no panic.
  • Fails before the fix: with the src/ changes reverted, that test fails.
  • End to end: digital_ids_signing_and_validation_through_tools now trusts a .p7b through sign_trust, and the signature goes back to valid.
  • Not committed: an openssl crl2pkcs7 -nocrl -certfile rsa.crt.pem -certfile ca.crt.pem bundle, in both DER and PEM, also loads both certificates.

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No input-derived indexing (slice patterns and get), recursion bounded by the existing BER parser
  • No unsafe
  • Truncation sweep in the new test

Provenance

  • No assets added; test bundles are built in the test from the existing OpenSSL-made fixtures
  • No fonts
  • No GPL/AGPL code
  • Behaviour from RFC 5652 §5.2 and RFC 7468 (PEM labels)
  • Not applicable: no new assets

Security

  • --root confinement unchanged (sign_trust path resolution untouched)
  • No MCP/control-channel change
  • No new outbound network

Parity and reach

  • sign.trust-import notes updated (still partial: per-certificate trust settings and a UI import are missing)
  • Reachable through sign_trust
  • docs/file-format-parity.md Certificates row and revision history updated

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • The DER path: a buffer that fails Certificate::parse is retried as a bundle. If both fail, the certificate's error is returned, because a broken .cer is the common case.
  • The PEM label matching is now stricter. A mismatched END no longer closes a block. I believe nothing relied on the old behaviour.

📝 Walkthrough

Certificate loading now accepts DER and PEM PKCS #7/CMS bundles and extracts X.509 certificates. Trust-import documentation and tests cover .p7b and .p7c inputs.

Changes: Certificate trust import

Layer / File(s) Summary
CMS certificate extraction
crates/sign/src/cms.rs
A public function parses CMS SignedData bundles and extracts parseable certificates. Existing SignedData parsing uses the shared certificate helper.
Certificate bundle loading
crates/sign/src/x509.rs, crates/sign/tests/crypto.rs
Certificate loading accepts DER bundles and PEM blocks labeled PKCS7 or CMS. Tests cover valid, mixed, malformed, empty, trailing, and truncated inputs.
Trust-import integration
crates/automation/src/tools.rs, crates/automation/tests/automation.rs, docs/file-format-parity.md, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Trust-import descriptions list .p7b and .p7c. Automation coverage trusts a certificate from a .p7b bundle and verifies the document signature.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f96e4

PKCS#7 bundle import accepts some structurally malformed SignedData files that RFC 5652 would reject. The consequence is limited to leniency, and the valid-bundle and trust-import flows are covered by tests. Tightening the shape check is a small follow-up and not a serious merge risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f96e4

Certificate bundles can now supply multiple trusted identities through an explicit import. The reviewed paths preserve file-access restrictions, commit trust changes only after successful loading, and keep document-carried certificates separate from explicitly trusted certificates. No introduced trust bypass was established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party able to invoke sign_trust and supply a readable bundle can add its parsed certificates to session trust, affecting signature verdicts across every open document. This is explicit import authority, not authority gained merely by opening a document. UI persistence can retain trusted certificates beyond the session.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The reviewed validation path does not automatically promote document-carried certificates to trust. Embedded certificates assist chain construction, but trust requires an exact certificate-byte match against the separate TrustStore. This enforcement code is unchanged from the PR base.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Bundle loading remains behind the existing automation path-resolution and configured-root checks. Parsing alone does not mutate trust, and CMS signer contents are not used as authorization to import certificates.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The newly reached BER reader retains checked length arithmetic, input bounds checks and a 48-level indefinite-length nesting limit. The bundle reader rejects trailing bytes and validates required outer tags; PEM handling requires matching end labels and rejects an outstanding recognized block at end of input.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider returning skipped-certificate diagnostics with bundle extraction so an import caller can distinguish a complete import from acceptance of only the parseable subset. This would improve trust-import transparency; it is not an established vulnerability.

load_certificates now reads PKCS storytold#7 certificate bundles (degenerate
SignedData, RFC 5652 §5.2) in DER and as PEM PKCS7/CMS blocks, the way
Windows, Acrobat and certificate authorities export chains. PEM END
lines must match their BEGIN label.

A PEM file whose last block never ends is now an error instead of a
shorter certificate list (CodeRabbit on storytold#3561). The test's doc comment
for the bundle builder is back above its function.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate the complete SignedData field layout before extracting certificates.

certificate_bundle skips the first three fields without validation and scans every later field for [0]. A malformed SignedData can therefore contain arbitrary first fields and omit the mandatory final signerInfos SET, while a later [0] containing a parseable certificate is accepted. load_certificates reaches this parser after certificate parsing fails, and sign_trust then adds the returned certificate to the trusted list.

Require the expected field types and final SET before scanning optional certificate fields.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject trailing bytes at the certificate-bundle boundary.

certificate_bundle discards the remainder from Tlv::parse_ber(bytes). A valid CMS ContentInfo followed by arbitrary bytes can therefore be accepted and imported by sign_trust. The PDF-padding exception belongs to SignedData::parse, not to .p7b/.p7c trust-import input. Reject non-empty remainder before returning certificates.
