M6: a push button's caption uses the font, size and color of its /DA - #3543
Conversation
Button appearances always drew the caption in regular Helvetica, sized from the button's height, whatever the field's /DA asked for: DA Form 31's 'Attachments Menu' (9 pt bold) came out at 4 pt. The caption now takes the /DA's font from the form's /DR, its size (an automatic size still fits the button) and its color, as text fields already do.
Appearance text in a simple font was measured with Helvetica's widths, whatever the font: a bold or Times caption or value came out narrower than drawn, so centered and right-aligned text slid right of where it belongs. Text is now measured with the font's /Widths, or a standard font's published widths.

Read the whole diff. button_caption parses the widget's /DA (else the field's), looks the font up in /DR, and falls back to Helvetica when it is missing or cannot encode the caption. The size is the /DA size, or the old height-based one when it is 0. The colour operator comes from the /DA. The first character the font cannot draw is still returned for undrawn_fields, and the caller adds the chosen font to the appearance's resources under its /DA name. The tests check 9 pt Helvetica Bold in blue, an automatic size (14 pt, black) as before, and a CJK /DR font where 签 is drawn and a character beyond U+FFFF is reported. CI is green at this head.

Re-checked at ad45312, reading the whole diff again. Behaviour is as I approved: button_caption takes the font from the /DA (the widget's, else the field's) via /DR, falls back to Helvetica when it is missing or cannot encode the caption, uses the /DA size or the old height-based one when it is 0, and still reports the first undrawable character. Since 465bd0a the changes are the doc comments, a small field() test helper, and the new tests (9 pt Helvetica Bold in blue, the automatic 14 pt case, and a CJK /DR font where 签 is drawn and a character beyond U+FFFF is reported). CI is green at this head.
What this changes
A push button's caption is now drawn in the font, size and color its
/DAasks for.On
main,button_appearance(crates/forms/src/author.rs) ignores the/DA. It always writes regular Helvetica in black, sized from the button's height ((height - 4) × 0.6, clamped to 4–14 pt). A button asking for 9 pt bold in a 10.5 pt box therefore gets a 4 pt regular caption.DA Form 31 (Request and Authority for Leave, a public blank form) is a real-world case, found while filling it. Its "Attachments Menu" (
/HeBo 9 Tf) and "DA Form 31 - Instructions" (/HeBo 8 Tf) buttons come out tiny and regular-weight.No existing issue (searched for button caption, DA font and caption size).
Fix
appearance::button_captiondraws a caption in the font its/DAnames, from the form's/DR(the samedr_fonttext fields use), falling back to Helvetica. It uses the/DAsize, or the old height-based size when the/DAasks for an automatic size (0), and the/DA's color operator.button_appearancetakes the widget's/DA, else the field's own or inherited one, asfield_appearance_drawndoes.Centering, and #2900
The caption is centered by
FontText::width, which onmainmeasures every simple font with Helvetica's widths. A bold caption is wider than that, so on this branch alone it sits a little right of center. An earlier version of this PR also changed
FontText::widthto measure each font with its own widths. #2900 (@marcoarnulfo) makes the same change, and more: it also handles fonts that remap codes through/Differences. It was opened first, so I dropped mine. Merged locally, the two combine cleanly, and the bold captions center: the centering assertion I dropped from this PR's test passes with #2900.main(Synthetic: two fixed-size 10.5 pt buttons whose captions ask for 9 pt and 8 pt bold. Headless, at 200% zoom.)
