What this changes

Fixes #2997. Dragging page thumbnails in the Organize page grid with Ctrl held (Option on macOS) now drops copies at the gap instead of moving the pages — Acrobat's gesture. A "+" badge sits by the pointer while the modifier is held, the copies land at the gap selected, and one undo step ("Duplicate pages") takes them out again.

  • pdfcraft-organize: duplicate_pages(doc, indices, at: Option<usize>) — the copies go at at (clamped to the document's end), or after the last of them when at is None, as before.
  • pdfcraft-engine: Edit::DuplicatePages { pages, at }. The insertion point belongs in the edit: duplicating and then moving would have been two undo steps.
  • pdfcraft-ui-egui: the grid drop reads the copy modifier (Ctrl elsewhere, Option on macOS — one helper, copy_modifier()), paints the badge, selects the copies, and the post-apply fixup re-selects them once the edit lands.
  • pdfcraft-automation: page_duplicate takes an optional at (1-based: the first copy becomes page at; left out, after the last of them), validated like the other page inserts, with its description and schema updated — so agents can drive the same thing (AGENTS.md §3).
  • UI control channel: ui.drag's modifiers now also set the input state for the drag's frames, so gestures that read ui.input(|i| i.modifiers) rather than the event work through pdfcraft-cli ui too — this copy-drag, and view.column-select's Alt-drag.
  • parity/acrobat-features.toml (organize.duplicate-pages) and the progress docs.

How you verified it

  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-organize -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-automation: green (organize 32, engine 274, automation 176).
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui: the whole suite green.
  • cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-organize -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-automation -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo xtask parity (exit 0, so the new evidence names resolve).
  • Every new test was seen to fail with its fix reverted, as CLAUDE.md asks:
    • duplicate_pages_at_inserts_the_copies_there → left: ["Page 1", "Page 2", "Page 3", "Page 3"] (copies after the last).
    • dragging_with_the_copy_modifier_copies_the_pages_into_the_gap → left: ["Page 2", "Page 3", "Page 1"] (a move).
    • ctrl_dragging_a_thumbnail_through_the_control_channel_copies_the_page → 3, not 4 pages (a move through the channel).
  • The real app, not just tests: pdfcraft --control FILE /tmp/smoke3.pdf on this desktop, driven by pdfcraft-cli ui — set key=tool value=organize, inspect for the grid cells, then drag from=[456,299] to=[927,299] modifiers=["ctrl"]: pages 3 → 4, page 4 selected, and the screenshot shows the copy as the fourth cell with the selection on it.

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic! outside tests; the new path cannot panic (import_pages clamps at, and the post-apply selection clamps it again with saturating_sub).
  • No indexing with input-derived positions; no new arithmetic on input beyond gap + pages.len(), both bounded by the grid's own cells.
  • No unsafe.

Provenance and security

Nothing new is fetched, embedded or shelled out: no asset, no font, no dependency, no network. page_duplicate gains only a bounded integer argument, so --root confinement is untouched.

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml updated (organize.duplicate-pages: evidence lists the four new tests; the notes say what the gesture does and what at means).
  • Reachable headlessly: page_duplicate takes at, and the control channel can drive the gesture itself.
  • Docs updated (ROADMAP.md progress log + status line, docs/roadmap.md revision history + M4 row + status line).

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • The modifier and its single home: Ctrl (Windows/Linux), Option (macOS), as the issue and Acrobat say — copy_modifier() in crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs.
  • at is an index in the page order as it is now: the copies land at the gap the user sees. None keeps the command's old "after the last of them" behaviour, so page.duplicate is unchanged.
  • Deliberate restraint: the Pages panel drag (panels.rs::page_drag) does not copy yet — [Feature Request] Ctrl + Drag to duplicate pages in the Organize Pages grid view #2997 asks for the grid; the panel is a separate follow-up.
  • docs/roadmap.md's milestone table carries duplicated M4 rows upstream; I appended to the first one.
  • My other PR docs(roadmap): record #2662, the audit's one-word cover #3075 (docs) touches the same status-line block in ROADMAP.md/docs/roadmap.md; whichever merges second needs a one-line rebase.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Copy pages by dragging them to a new position while holding Ctrl, or Option on macOS. A plus badge indicates copy mode; copies are inserted at the drop gap, selected after insertion, and the action can be undone in one step.
    • Choose where duplicated pages are inserted with the at option in the page_duplicate automation command. If omitted, copies are added after the last selected page.

Rebased onto 0ac9b840.

The dependency licences and advisories failure was not from this branch: it is the RUSTSEC-2026-0372 batch (zvariant_derive, with zvariant 0370 and zbus_names 0371), the Linux AT-SPI D-Bus stack behind egui → accesskit_unix. This branch does not touch Cargo.lock, which is byte-identical to main's, so any run after the advisories went live hits it. Upstream already handles it with the three [advisories] ignore entries that landed in 0ac9b840, and the rebase picks them up — cargo xtask deny is green here now with cargo-deny 0.20.2 and the live advisory DB (advisories ok, bans ok, licenses ok, sources ok).

For the record, on the previous head the code jobs were green: test (ubuntu-latest) 12m39s, test (windows-latest) 45m22s, wasm32 check 1m33s — all pass, deny the only failure.

Both test failures in run 39074014525 are flakes, not from this change (deny and wasm32 pass on this head):

ubuntu — control::transport_tests::an_unauthenticated_connection_is_closed_at_the_deadline is already red on main: run 39066732854 fails the identical statement (control.rs:1141 on main, :1152 here — the same expect, shifted by the test block this PR adds). The only non-test change here in control.rs is inside the ui.drag handler (a ModifiersChanged event prefixed to each drag frame); it is nowhere near the transport/auth-deadline path. Locally the test passes 12 runs in a row (0.66–0.71 s each). The 300 ms auth_deadline in TEST_LIMITS reads as load-sensitive against a full 440-test suite.

windows — image_pixels_follow_the_frame_while_a_corner_is_dragged fails on the picture is drawn in the frame [[704.0 245.2] - [828.8 322.0]], not only at [] — the drawn-picture list is empty: the image mesh was not in that frame at all (decode/settle), not a geometry mismatch. The frame assertion above it passed. The same ui-egui code passed on Windows in the previous run (45m22s, head 34c0c6df); this rebase only touched crates/xfdf, deny.toml and the progress docs. Locally it passes 6/6.

I cannot re-run the failed jobs from a fork (Must have admin rights to Repository) — a maintainer re-run would be appreciated; otherwise a fresh push retriggers. Happy to send a separate PR making either test less load-sensitive if that is preferred to re-running.

Dug into the ubuntu one locally with throwaway instrumentation (not committed; the tree is back to the committed state):

  • The server is not missing its deadline. Across 46 runs of the drip arm at 1 ms / 5 ms / 50 ms cadences — including with 2 pinned CPUs and 4 spinning CPU hogs — the client received the -32004 line every single time, ~301 ms after connect (deadline 300 ms).
  • The failure class is the teardown. In a 60-run version at a 1 ms drip with a deliberately late read, 2 runs got a truncated reply: 35 of the 95 bytes of the error line ({"error":{"code":-32004,"message":) and then the connection ended mid-line. So a client can be left without the reason it was closed — which is exactly the shape of the CI failure, with the reader starved so it lost the line entirely.
  • I could not build a deterministic local reproduction of that: a burst larger than the pre-auth line limit closes cleanly, because the reader's 8 KiB buffer consumes the whole burst and nothing is left unread at close. So I have not guessed at a server-side fix — that needs a real repro (a socket-level seam) to be testable, and I would rather not push a speculative change into a feature PR.
  • main fails this same test (run 39066732854), so it is repo-wide rather than this branch.

Retriggered the jobs with an empty commit e4aed8ea (deny and wasm32 were green on this head; the fork cannot re-run upstream jobs itself).

All four jobs are green on e4aed8ea:

job result
test (ubuntu-latest) pass, 12m27s
test (windows-latest) pass, 21m44s
wasm32 check pass, 1m24s
dependency licences and advisories pass, 38s

The source is identical to the previous head (that commit is empty — the fork cannot re-run upstream jobs, so a push was the only way to retrigger): the same code failed the two test jobs and then passed them. Ready for review.

Thanks, this looks good to me! I tested it locally on e4aed8ea (Linux):

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check and cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-organize -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-automation -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean.
  • cargo test for those four crates is all green (57 test binaries, 0 failures), and cargo xtask parity exits 0.
  • I also ran the new tests by name: duplicate_pages_at_inserts_the_copies_there (organize and automation), dragging_with_the_copy_modifier_copies_the_pages_into_the_gap and ctrl_dragging_a_thumbnail_through_the_control_channel_copies_the_page. All four pass.

Things I checked in the code:

  • copying is read each frame in organize_grid, so letting go of Ctrl before the drop falls back to a move, as #2997 asks.
  • For a non-contiguous selection, the copies are inserted in sorted, deduped order at gap. The selection gap..gap + n in canvas.rs matches the post-apply fixup in editing.rs.
  • Putting at inside Edit::DuplicatePages keeps it to a single undo step, and None leaves page.duplicate and page_duplicate working as before.
  • In ui.drag, the ModifiersChanged prefix and the final reset only run when modifiers are set, so plain drags are unchanged.

Hosted CI is green on this head too, and I agree the earlier ubuntu and windows failures were flakes. Leaving the Pages-panel drag for a follow-up makes sense. Approving 👍

Dragging thumbnails in the Organize page grid with Ctrl held (Option on
macOS) drops copies at the gap instead of moving the pages: a "+" badge
by the pointer, the copies land at the gap selected, and one undo step
takes them out. The insertion point joins the engine edit
(Edit::DuplicatePages { at }) so the copy is one undo step rather than a
duplicate plus a move.

page_duplicate takes a 1-based "at" (the first copy becomes page "at"),
so agents can drive the same thing, and the UI control channel's
ui.drag modifiers now reach the input state -- which gestures that read
it (this copy-drag, and Alt-drag column select) need.

Closes storytold#2997.

📝 Walkthrough

Page duplication now supports an optional insertion position. In the Organize grid, holding the copy modifier while dragging inserts copies at the drop gap, displays a plus badge, and selects the copies. The UI drag control forwards modifier state.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to aa235

Copy-drag and ordinary move behavior appear ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to aa235

Document permissions and single-step undo remain enforced. A bounded recovery issue remains: a failed copy-drag can leave the intended destination selected even though no copies were created, potentially changing the targets of subsequent page actions.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new copy-drag path publishes its destination selection before duplication commits. If copying or document refresh fails, the document remains unchanged but the destination selection survives. For an interior drop gap, subsequent page commands can therefore target existing pages rather than the copies that failed to appear. Engine rollback and error notification contain the document failure, but do not restore UI target ownership.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed duplication operation affects the selected open document's page order and copied page content. It does not introduce a separate source document or additional service authority; source pages come from that document's snapshot.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The native UI control listener binds to loopback and requires token authentication before forwarding requests. DuplicatePages still passes through the engine's assembly-permission check, and automation validates source indices and insertion position before applying the edit.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Import refusals have cleanup for newly allocated objects, and the engine additionally isolates execution on a cloned graph. These controls contain document mutation on copy failure; they do not repair the independently updated UI selection.

Explanation

Issue #2997 requires modifier-drag copying in the Organize grid, insertion at the drop gap, unchanged originals, and normal move behavior when the modifier is absent. The reviewed changes implement these behaviors in canvas.rs. The UI and control-channel tests verify copied pages, selection, and modifier handling. The + badge provides the optional visual feedback. The Pages panel remains outside the issue’s stated scope.

Rebased onto 50f261d7 — the conflict was real: eeadc79d (M4 reverse page order, #1720) landed reverse_pages right beside duplicate_pages and reversing_pages_through_tools right beside this PR's automation test, plus today's two status lines in both roadmap files. Both sides kept, no text reworded:

file resolution
crates/organize/src/lib.rs upstream's reverse_pages kept whole; duplicate_pages keeps at and its new doc comment
crates/automation/tests/automation.rs reversing_pages_through_tools (upstream) and page_duplicate_at_inserts_the_copies_there (this PR) both kept
ROADMAP.md / docs/roadmap.md main's 2026-10-18 entries above this PR's 2026-10-17 entries (newest first, unchanged wording)

page_reverse and page_duplicate now sit side by side in the tool table with their own parity entries.

Verification on the rebased head 2cd9b25d: cargo fmt --all -- --check clean · scoped cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings clean · cargo test for organize/engine/automation/ui-egui green (57 test binaries, 0 failures — includes upstream's reverse-page tests and this PR's four) · cargo xtask parity and cargo xtask layers exit 0.

I dropped the empty retrigger commit e4aed8ea: it existed only because a fork cannot re-run upstream jobs, and both flakes it worked around are now fixed in main — #3165 (the refusal reply lost to a TCP reset — the teardown class described above) and #2812 (timing-dependent render and UI tests). Good to see those land.

Thanks for the review and the local run, @FredApps. Agreed on the Pages-panel drag as a follow-up — that grid has no drop gaps to land copies in yet, so it needs a different affordance.

…#3092 review)

Option-drag in the Organize grid moved the pages instead of copying them in a Mac
browser: `cfg!(target_os = "macos")` is false in the wasm build, and eframe sets the
context's OS from the browser. `copy_modifier` now takes the context and asks
`commands::mac_shortcuts`, as the shortcut labels do.

The drag helpers in `tests/editing.rs` and `tests/control.rs` picked the modifier the
same compile-time way, so they would have sent Ctrl on a Mac host; both read the
context's OS now. The new regression test
`option_copies_and_ctrl_moves_when_the_context_reports_macos` drives a Mac context —
Ctrl moves, Option copies — and fails without this change.

Green on aa235625 — the review fix on top of 78490537:

job result
test (ubuntu-latest) pass, 12m34s
test (windows-latest) pass, 22m21s
wasm32 check pass, 1m34s
dependency licences and advisories pass, 34s

CodeRabbit's re-review of this head came back with nothing new.

The one actionable finding — copy_modifier choosing Option/Ctrl from cfg!(target_os = "macos"), which is false in a Mac browser — is fixed (context OS via commands::mac_shortcuts), the two test helpers that made the same compile-time choice are fixed with it, and the new Mac-context regression test fails without the production change. The thread is resolved.

One note for whoever merges: .reviewDecision is empty on this head, so the earlier approval from e4aed8ea may need renewing. The Pages-panel drag copy stays a follow-up, as agreed.

Thanks for fixing this and adding the Mac-context regression. Reusing mac_shortcuts(ctx) handles the browser case correctly, and the Linux, Windows and WASM checks are green. Looks good to merge.
