What this changes

Fixes #2098.

The problem. Edit a PDF ▸ Add text (page_add_text) draws with the standard 14 fonts in WinAnsiEncoding. WinAnsi has codes for š ž Š Ž, but not for č ć đ or the rest of Latin Extended-A (ł ő ę ď ť ă …). On current main:

  • page_add_text refuses such text;
  • in the desktop editor the box stays open with the text in it and it can never be committed.

So Croatian, Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Slovak, Slovenian and Turkish text can't be added.

Why no font needs embedding. The twelve standard text faces carry these letters (the Core14 character set: ccaron, cacute, dcroat, lslash, ohungarumlaut, …), and every viewer supplies those faces. A simple font can reach them through an /Encoding with /Differences (ISO 32000-2 §9.6.5.1), and viewers read them back by their standard glyph names (§9.10.2).

What it does.

  • pdfcraft-fonts

    • std14_metrics.rs gets EXTRA_LETTERS: 66 Latin Extended-A letters with their glyph names and Core14 widths in the twelve text faces.
    • New latin.rs with LatinEncoding and Std14::latin_text_width.
    • LatinEncoding gives the extra letters a text uses codes of their own. Codes WinAnsi leaves undefined come first, then codes of WinAnsi characters the text doesn't use. The encoding is built from the text alone, so the same text always gets the same encoding.
    • glyph_text reads these glyph names back, so text_lines, find and Edit text see the letters. This also helps other producers' PDFs that name them.
  • pdfcraft-edit (Add text).

    • Text with such letters gets a font entry whose /Encoding is << /BaseEncoding /WinAnsiEncoding /Differences […] >>.
    • The entry is named PCF<face>L<tag>. The tag hashes the differences, so two items with different letters never share or overwrite each other's entry in the page resources.
    • Widths, wrapping, alignment and validation use the extra letters' standard widths.
    • Text that needs a shaping face (Arabic, Hebrew, Thai) keeps plain WinAnsi for its Latin runs, as before.
  • Renderer (vendored hayro-interpret patch 26, extended). PdfCraft draws non-embedded standard fonts with PDFium's Foxit stand-ins, which have only about 230 glyphs. Patch 26 already builds most Latin Extended-A letters from base plus accent. This adds:

    • Đ, drawn as Ð;
    • đ, a bar across the ascender;
    • ď ľ Ľ ť, an apostrophe-shaped caron placed within the standard advance.

    Before this, they drew nothing.

  • Message. The refusal message no longer says "only Western European characters". It is shared with headers and watermarks, which are still WinAnsi-only, so it now just names the character.

  • Docs. The page_add_text description lists what's accepted.

Not yet: the comma-accent letters (ș ț ģ ķ ļ ņ ŗ and capitals). PdfCraft's renderer doesn't draw them yet (#2914 works on the comma below), so they're still refused with the character named rather than written to show blank here.

Overlap.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check, clippy -D warnings on fonts, edit, render, engine, automation and ui-egui (--all-targets) and hayro-interpret (--lib; its extract_images example doesn't build on main either)
  • cargo test for pdfcraft-fonts, -edit, -render, -engine, -automation, and -ui-egui (--lib, --test content, --test editing), with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR
  • cargo check -p pdfcraft-edit -p pdfcraft-render --target wasm32-unknown-unknown
  • cargo xtask assets (the std14_metrics.rs hash and source line re-attested; ATTRIBUTION.md regenerated), layers, parity

Against MuPDF. Four samples were added with page_add_text in Helvetica, Times, Courier and Helvetica-Bold:

  • Croatian čćžšđ ČĆŽŠĐ Đakovo;
  • Polish Łódź zażółć gęślą jaźń;
  • Czech/Slovak Ďáblice, Plzeň, ťuk, Ľubica;
  • Hungarian Győr, árvíztűrő tükörfúrógép.

PdfCraft's render matches MuPDF's glyph for glyph, line breaks included, so the widths agree. Text extraction (pdfcraft-cli text, MuPDF get_text) returns the samples exactly. A sheet of the new composite letters in all twelve faces was compared the same way.

Tests:

  • latin::tests (fonts):
    • codes and differences;
    • same letters give the same encoding, while other letters with the same codes get another tag;
    • with all 66 letters, the overflow takes only unused WinAnsi codes (€ and é keep theirs);
    • widths typed in from the published metrics;
    • comma accents refused.
  • central_european_letters_are_added_in_the_standard_fonts (edit):
    • three items, two with different letter sets;
    • three distinct font entries, each with the right /Differences;
    • read-back as typed, also after retyping one item;
    • widths;
    • ș refused.
  • letters_with_a_bar_or_an_apostrophe_caron_are_built_from_their_parts (render), in Helvetica, Times-Roman and Courier-Bold:
    • each letter draws more ink than its base;
    • đ's bar stays within the letter;
    • the apostrophe stands right of ď ľ ť;
    • ť's apostrophe reaches the ascender.
  • page_add_text_writes_central_european_letters (automation): save, reopen and text_lines in three faces; ș refused with U+0219.
  • typing_central_european_letters_commits_to_page (UI): typing Croatian, Polish and Czech into Add text commits each to the page. This is the reporter's case.

Mutation check: 19 mutants, 18 caught. Each mutant reverts one piece:

  • each of the six new renderer table entries;
  • the bar height;
  • the apostrophe height;
  • the refusal check;
  • the per-encoding font name;
  • writing /Differences;
  • encoding the lines;
  • the widths, in edit and in fonts;
  • the spare-code rule;
  • the tag;
  • reading the names back;
  • the comma-accent exclusion.

The one survivor is equivalent: Đ's "accent" is Ð itself, so drawing it twice looks the same. The first run left three survivors (widths in edit, spare codes, tag). They exposed missing checks, which the tests above now have.

Provenance

  • Data. The added widths and glyph names are Core14 AFM data (Adobe-authored technical data, the AGENTS.md §1.1 item already used by std14_metrics.rs). They were generated from the same Core14 metrics the vendored renderer already carries, and the hash and source line in ATTRIBUTION.toml were re-attested. No font program and no other asset was added.
  • Renderer patch. It is marked PdfCraft patch:, and patch 26 in vendor/README.md describes it.
  • Behaviour. It comes from ISO 32000-2 §9.6.5 and §9.10.2.

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/indexing on input-derived positions, and no unsafe.
  • The code pool is bounded: the encoder returns None rather than reusing a code when it runs out.
  • The renderer offsets are checked finite, as patch 26 already did.

📝 Walkthrough

Standard-font text handling adds support for selected Latin Extended-A letters. The changes add glyph metrics and PDF encoding, use them when adding unshaped text, and update standard-font outline construction for several accented glyphs. Tests cover editing, automation, UI input, and raster output.

Changes: Central European Text Support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Latin Extended-A metrics and encoding
crates/fonts/src/std14_metrics.rs, crates/fonts/src/latin.rs, crates/fonts/src/lib.rs, crates/fonts/src/pdf.rs, ATTRIBUTION.md, ATTRIBUTION.toml
Adds metrics and glyph names for 66 Latin Extended-A letters, plus helpers for character support, width measurement, and PDF encoding. Glyph-name lookup recognizes the added names.
Added-text encoding and validation
crates/edit/src/added.rs, crates/edit/src/lib.rs, crates/edit/src/tests.rs, crates/automation/src/tools.rs, crates/automation/tests/automation.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/content.rs, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Added unshaped text uses Latin Extended-A encodings when applicable, and width measurement uses Latin-only metrics. Tests cover supported text, unsupported characters, saving and reopening, and UI text commitment.
Standard-font glyph construction

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 388e0

Some supported text can be saved with substituted characters, and text containing many distinct added letters can have inconsistent width measurements. Correct those behaviors before merging; the README table also needs repair.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 388e0

The change remains within existing document-editing permissions and rendering paths. Risk is concentrated in document integrity and font-resource handling, rather than new privileges or service exposure. Some encoding edge cases and external-viewer behavior remain insufficiently verified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Different encodings for the same face are distinguished only by a 32-bit FNV tag. If tags collide, the page-resource merge replaces the existing font dictionary without comparing Differences, potentially changing previously added text that references that name. This weakens item-level failure containment. The condition is inferred from the identity and merge design; no concrete collision was demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified encoding and resource-identity risks affect edited document content, with resource aliasing scoped to a page and font face. The inspected change does not expand that authority into another document, tenant, service, credential store, or environment.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Add, update, and delete remain subject to the existing editable-document and PDF modification-permission checks before mutation. Widening the accepted alphabet does not bypass these checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The session mutation path requires exclusive mutable access and preserves prior document snapshots. Its failure rollback and undo mechanisms provide recovery for document-state changes without introducing a separate Latin-specific mutation path.

Explanation

Issue [#2098] requires ć in the Text input tool. EXTRA_LETTERS defines cacute and its Core14 widths. LatinEncoding assigns text-specific codes, added.rs writes /Differences and encoded text, and glyph-name reading restores the character. The edit, automation, and UI tests cover save/reopen and commit behavior for Croatian text containing ć.

Explanation

The changes implement the Add text requirement in [#2098]. Font metrics, encoding, width handling, glyph-name reading, rendering support, validation, documentation, and regression tests support that implementation. The refusal-message update applies to the shared character validation. The reported exclusions for comma-accent letters and text-box appearances do not add unrelated scope.

Add widths for the generated standard-font encoding.

When LatinEncoding assigns č to 0x7F, the Type1 font has /Differences but no /Widths. Metrics::width(0x7F) does not resolve the Difference glyph name. It calls the code-indexed Std14::width(0x7F), gets zero for the undefined code, and falls back to /MissingWidth (zero when it is absent). Helvetica's ccaron advance is 500 units. Text-editing measurements can therefore give this character zero advance.

Add /FirstChar, /LastChar, and /Widths for the generated encoding. Cover every code in the range, including codes reassigned from unused WinAnsi characters, and use the matching Core14 glyph width for each Difference code.

Not changing this here. The plain standard-font entries Add text already writes on main (/BaseFont /Helvetica, /Encoding /WinAnsiEncoding) carry no /FirstChar, /LastChar or /Widths either. They rely on the standard 14 exemption, and the /Differences variant keeps the same convention. Without an embedded program, viewers take each glyph's advance from their own standard-font metrics, by the glyph name /Differences gives, which is also how the codes reassigned from unused WinAnsi characters are measured. Writing /Widths for every standard-font entry would be a separate change covering both kinds.

@mtlcl410 Thanks for clarifying. You are correct about the standard-14 exemption. /Differences does not itself require explicit /Widths. My recommendation was too prescriptive.

The internal measurement concern remains separate from viewer rendering. In crates/fonts/src/pdf.rs, Metrics::width still calls Std14::width(code) without resolving the /Differences glyph name. crates/edit/src/text.rs uses that result for text bounds and positions. Plain WinAnsi entries do not introduce this code-to-glyph mismatch.

An encoding-aware standard-font fallback in Metrics could address that concern without changing the generated font dictionaries. I accept your decision not to add explicit widths here.

Would you like a follow-up issue for the internal measurement concern?

Learning: In PdfCraft, Add text intentionally writes non-embedded standard-14 font dictionaries without explicit FirstChar, LastChar, or Widths. This convention also applies to its WinAnsi-based Differences encodings. Do not treat the omission alone as a PDF validity defect; evaluate PdfCraft's internal encoding-aware width lookup separately.

č ć đ ł ő ę ď ť and the rest of Latin Extended-A are in the standard 14
text faces but not in WinAnsi, so Add text refused them (the editor box
could not be committed). Such text now gets an /Encoding with
/Differences naming the letters it uses, under a font name tagged by
those differences; widths come from the Core14 metrics (EXTRA_LETTERS in
std14_metrics.rs, re-attested) and glyph_text reads the names back.

The renderer's standard-font stand-ins lack these glyphs: vendored
hayro-interpret patch 26 now also builds Đ (as Ð), đ (bar) and ď ľ Ľ ť
(apostrophe caron). Comma-accent letters stay refused for now.

Reject AddText values that exceed the Latin encoding capacity.

EXTRA_LETTERS contains 66 characters, but a text that uses every WinAnsi code leaves only 35 free codes. LatinEncoding::for_text then returns None. draw falls back to win_ansi(line), which writes each extra letter as ?. Reject this case before writing.

letters is rejected when it is otherwise Latin but exceeds the capacity of
`LatinEncoding::for_text`. Return an `EditError::Invalid` for this case, while
preserving the existing handling of undrawable characters and non-Latin text.
