Combine files from Finder (macOS): a Quick Action the app installs, whose list of files opens as one Combine (#585, follows #2541) - #2741
Conversation
…rytold#585) Selecting PDFs, pictures or a mix in File Explorer (or a Linux file manager) and choosing "Combine files in PdfCraft" opens the Combine files tab with them listed in the order they arrive, one window for the whole selection. Nothing is combined until Combine is pressed; pictures become PDFs as they join (storytold#569). - Single instance: a launch's request is now Open or Combine; the wire carries {"combine":[...]} beside {"open":[...]}, and the running window gets each run of one kind as one event, in arrival order. A PdfCraft from before this refuses a combine request, so that launch opens its own window instead. - `pdfcraft --combine [files...]`: the first launch of a burst lists its own file; the others hand theirs over (Explorer starts one process per selected file). - OsEvent::Combine and PdfCraftApp::combine_paths: each file is read (one that can't be read is said and left out) and the rest join the list as one undo step. - MSI: PdfCraft.Combine on .pdf in PdfcraftPdfContextMenu and on the ten image types in PdfcraftImageContextMenu, so each follows its menu's switch, is kept on update only while present and is removed on uninstall. MultiSelectModel=Document, --combine "%1". test-msi.ps1 checks all eleven. - Linux: [Desktop Action Combine], Exec=pdfcraft --combine %U. Not included: a Finder entry on macOS. Parity: core.open-pdf and organize.combine-files. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…hose list of files opens as one Combine (storytold#585) Finder hands a service its files through Apple events and a Services provider needs Objective-C (unsafe); so the app writes an Automator Quick Action into ~/Library/Services whose shell step lists the selected paths in a fresh folder of the temporary folder and opens the list with the app. The open event becomes the same Combine event a --combine launch makes, running or not; the list is trusted only at that exact place and removed once read. Turned on in Finder's menu at its first install only (someone who unticks it keeps it off when a later version rewrites the files). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Tested on an Apple-silicon Mac — macOS 26.6, commit a3562450. CI runs Ubuntu and Windows only
(ci.yml:31; macOS slots reserved for release builds, ci.yml:29-30), so the Mac path below is new
coverage. Two of your four finder_combine tests are ungated (:329, :350; module declared at
main.rs:39) and do run in CI — the install path never has.
What works. rustfmt, cargo check -p pdfcraft --all-targets (0 warnings), clippy
-D warnings, cargo test -p pdfcraft --bin pdfcraft (73 passed / 0 failed, 1 ignored network test)
and cargo xtask parity: all rc=0. macOS accepts your generated workflow — pbs -dump_pboard lists
NSBundlePath …/Combine files in PdfCraft.workflow, Finder context, com.adobe.pdf + public.image;
plutil -lint OK on both files. Delivery works warm and cold: three PDFs, one named
review three with spaces.pdf, reached a Combine files tab in arrival order, footer "3 files · 3 pages ·
1.6 KB" (ui-inspect.json tab #10, rows #104–#106). Each temp list was created and consumed inside
0.1 s (TS3Vz9, pguNUL, ZTUu57), file and folder removed by your code (:71-72) — with open
stubbed out the directory persists, so that cleanup is yours. Nothing running: the step started PdfCraft
(pid 37233) and took the list. Nick's click, after one manual tick: three files in, in order, into a
window already on screen.
What fails. Your installer tries to switch the menu entry on, and on this macOS it does not. defaults
stores { ContextMenu = 1; } as text; Finder read text as off. Four observations, same key: your
command → '1' (string, captured 02:21 right after your own install); macOS's write on a manual tick →
true (boolean, plus one entry in the pbs FinderOrdering dictionary that already held six); replay
yours → strings again, tick off (Nick confirmed); booleans with no ordering entry → stays on. first
comes from whether document.wflow exists (:92) and gates the only write, so this lands on every fresh
install. Observed here exactly as described: absent from Quick Actions after install, present after one
tick in Customize.
Why nothing caught it. finder_combine.rs:379 asserts text.contains("ContextMenu = 1").
defaults read prints that line byte-identically for a string and a boolean — verified both ways;
plutil -p separates them. The test passes in the broken state.
There is no cheap rewrite. Nested -dict … -bool → rc=1, Cannot nest composite types. -json is
not a write option here. A dotted keypath exits 0 and leaves a stray top-level key behind. PlistBuddy
refuses the (null) service key: Unrecognized Type: -. Only read–merge–defaults import produced
booleans — too invasive for one checkbox. Cheapest fix: delete the auto-enable and first with it
(today, delete-after-untick re-adds an inert entry over Finder's record), and tell users where the switch
is.
Also. Deleting MAX_LIST (:28, compared as bytes at :70) or the is_file() check leaves all
four tests green; install() has no test at all, against CLAUDE.md:36 ("Prove a test fails before the
fix"). Only dir.parent() is canonicalised (:66) and metadata follows links (:69), so a symlinked
folder or list file is accepted — through a folder link your cleanup deletes the real list and leaves the
link (ENOTDIR), through a file link the 9-byte target survives. At MAX_LIST + 1 bytes (≈8,100 paths
of 128 characters) the list is deleted and nothing happens; :43-44 says that is intended. Nothing
removes the workflow — package.sh never mentions Services — and with no bundle id registered the step
exits rc=1, LSCopyApplicationURLsForBundleIdentifier() failed…. You declare pdf + image while Combine
takes CONVERTIBLE (create/src/lib.rs:489, 12 entries, includes txt): PDF-plus-text selections
shouldn't offer it; HEIC conforms to public.image, appears nowhere in crates/, and fails per file with
"Can't be read: …" (combine_ui.rs:2407, via as_pdf at :2412) or silently in folders (:1616)
unless nothing matched (:2560). The Finder claim now sits at organize.combine-files notes :2972,
under a status = "shipped" that predates this work — already there at your base 5fdd820b, and still there on main as I write this (924c4da4)d
test is gated non-macOS (single_instance.rs:526), and core.open-pdf notes repeat it.
Not covered here. Windows MSI and Linux .desktop entries — no such machine; one Mac, one account.
Finder automation is unavailable to me and screencapture is denied here, so interface facts come from
your own opt-in --control dump plus Nick's eyes; I have not verified any screenshot's pixels.
Verdict: Technically mergeable after fixing the visibility issue detailed above, because as shipped
most Mac users never find the feature.
AI review on Nick's Mac: local route (Qwen 3.8 Flash Next oQ4e) ran builds, gates, mutation tests and
end-to-end; DeepSeek V4.1 Flash reviewed the code in earlier rounds; Qwen 3.8 Max plus my own model gave
the final line-by-line check on this text; Nick did the Finder click. Read-only account — no write access
here. My open PRs (#2523, #2359, #2073) touch annot, crypt and cos tests only.

Only dir.parent() is canonicalised (:66) and metadata follows links (:69). Measured on macOS
26.6: a symlinked folder named pdfcraft-combine.* and a symlinked list file are both accepted —
through a folder link your cleanup deletes the real inner list (remove_dir then fails ENOTDIR,
leaving the link); through a file link the 9-byte target survives. Same-user temp folder, so low risk;
symlink_metadata plus a check that dir isn't itself a link makes "a link cannot stand in" true of
these two paths.

This assertion passes in the broken state. defaults read prints ContextMenu = 1 byte-identically
whether the stored value is a string (what -dict-add "{ … }" yields on macOS 26.6) or a boolean (what
Finder writes, and what it reads as shown). plutil -p distinguishes them; assert the parsed type and
this test fails exactly when the Quick Action stays hidden. See my body for four measurements.

These notes claim Finder Quick Actions under a status = "shipped" that predates the branch (line 2968 is
context; already shipped at base 5fdd820b, and still there on main as I write this, 924c4da4). The cited test is gated non-macOS
at single_instance.rs:526, so nothing in the Mac path can fail — CLAUDE.md:8 asks for evidence that
can run where the feature ships, and my body has Mac measurements plus one default-state defect.
…nd Linux only On macOS the single-instance socket is compiled out (claim() returns Claim::Alone), so the usage line now says where the hand-off applies. Thanks to @amoisttowe1 for the macOS review. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…mbine files tab says where to turn it on; links refused; offered only for what Combine reads From amoisttowe1's Mac review: `defaults write … -dict-add` stores the presentation modes as strings, which Finder reads as off, so the Quick Action stayed hidden on every fresh install while the test passed (`defaults read` prints a string and a boolean alike). Writing the boolean means rewriting the whole pbs services record, too much for one checkbox, so the app no longer tries; on macOS the Combine files tab's empty state says to tick it once under Quick Actions ▸ Customize. Also: a linked folder or list is not a list (symlink_metadata); the types offered are exactly PDF + CONVERTIBLE as UTIs, not public.image (HEIC); new tests for the size cap, a folder in the list's place, links, and install_in; the parity notes say so and cite the module's own tests. Re-reviewed at 9a2ff066 after @regendorf-ux's changes: the Quick Action installs on launch, Finder lists it under Quick Actions after one manual tick in Customize…, and a three-file selection — including one with spaces in its name — arrives on the Combine files tab in order, waiting for the Combine button. The visibility issue from my previous review is cleared: nothing writes Finder's enable flag any more, and the tab now says where to turn it on. Tested on one Mac — macOS 26.6, Apple silicon; the Windows MSI and Linux .desktop halves are unreviewed here. The branch needs a rebase onto main.
Verdict: PR behaves as expected and clears the prior issues; mergeable once rebased.

Apple macOS filename documentation newline character allowed file names
💡 Result:
**Yes—newline characters can be part of macOS filenames.** Apple’s archived `intro(2)` manual says filename characters may be any ASCII characters except NUL and `/`; newline (`\n`, U+000A) isn’t excluded. That supports the conclusion that newline is allowed, though the manual is archived rather than current macOS-specific guidance. ([developer.apple.com](https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/System/Conceptual/ManPages_iPhoneOS/man2/intro.2.html))
In practice, filenames containing newlines can be awkward to display or handle in terminals and scripts. Also, Apple’s manual describes a 255-character limit, but actual limits can depend on the filesystem. ([developer.apple.com](https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/System/Conceptual/ManPages_iPhoneOS/man2/intro.2.html))

Use NUL-delimited records for Finder paths.
macOS permits newline characters in file names. The workflow writes each selected path with a newline, while listed() splits on newlines and trims each record. A selected file such as /tmp/report\n2026.pdf can therefore become two paths, so the valid file is lost and unintended paths may be staged.

Update the `script` function and `listed()` parser to use NUL-delimited Finder
paths end to end: write each selected path with a NUL separator, then split
records on NUL without trimming path contents. Preserve filtering of empty

Preserve all unreadable-path feedback in one localized notice.
combine_paths intentionally leaves OS-level read failures out of the Combine list. stage_combine_with handles files whose bytes were read but cannot be converted or assessed; it cannot receive a path that has no readable bytes. Therefore, staging failed paths would change this path's documented behavior, and the quoted stage_combine_with comment does not apply here.
The feedback issue remains: each notify_fmt call replaces self.toast, so multiple failures overwrite earlier filenames. Collect the failures and emit one localized aggregate notice, or retain them in a persistent warning.
Suggested fix: aggregate the read failures

Move Combine file reads off the UI frame.
If a Combine event contains a large file or a stalled filesystem path, combine_paths calls std::fs::read synchronously for each path. The UI cannot respond until those reads finish. Stage the reads in background work, then deliver the results to the UI in input order.

The Linux "Combine files in PdfCraft" entry was a [Desktop Action] in the application's .desktop file. The Desktop Entry specification defines those as application actions, which launchers show as a quicklist; no file manager adds them to the right-click menu of selected files. The ROADMAP and parity notes nevertheless said file managers offer the entry on Linux. Add packaging/linux/kio-servicemenus/ai.storyteller.pdfcraft-combine.desktop (Dolphin and other KDE file managers: PDFs and the picture types the Windows menu covers, Exec=pdfcraft --combine %F), stage it to usr/share/kio/servicemenus in package.sh (so the deb, rpm, tar and AppImage carry it), and reword the ROADMAP, parity and releasing notes to say what is true: Dolphin has the entry, the desktop action is a quicklist, GNOME Files and other managers have none. The launcher quicklist action stays. Test: apps/pdfcraft/tests/linux_service_menu.rs::combine_is_offered_for_pdfs_and_pictures, ::the_service_menu_is_installed_with_the_linux_packages; before this change they fail because the service menu file does not exist and package.sh does not stage it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e file The Finder Quick Action wrote one path a line and the app read the list with lines() and trim_end, so a file name holding a newline became two paths and trailing spaces were lost. The Quick Action now ends each path with a NUL byte and the app splits on NUL without trimming; a list with no NUL (one an earlier Quick Action wrote, which is rewritten at the next app start) is still read by line. The checks on where the list lives and how big it is are unchanged. When several files given to Combine could not be read, each failure replaced the previous notice, so only the last was shown. The failures are now collected and sent as one notice through the same message, with the names joined. Test: apps/pdfcraft/src/finder_combine_tests.rs::a_name_with_a_newline_stays_one_path, crates/ui-egui/tests/combine_unreadable.rs::every_unreadable_path_is_named; before this change the first fails because the name is split at the newline and trimmed, the second because only the last unreadable file is named. This branch is stacked on the right-click Combine branch, which now offers Combine through a KDE service menu and corrects what ROADMAP.md and the parity notes say about Linux file managers. Conflicts were only in those two texts: the base branch's Linux wording is kept beside this branch's Finder Quick Action, and "not yet" now names GNOME Files and other Linux file managers (the Finder entry exists on this branch). CI fails at this head (windows and ubuntu) on primary_ui_fonts_cover_latin_and_cyrillic_catalogs (crates/ui-egui/tests/fonts.rs:336): cs: Inter lacks ['▸'].
The new strings in the catalogs use ▸, for example "From Finder: select files, then right-click ▸ Quick Actions ▸ Combine files in PdfCraft…", and the bundled UI font has no glyph for it, so it would draw as a missing-glyph box in those languages. Please spell the path with a character the font has (the existing strings for Preferences menus show what the catalogs use), in every catalog the PR touches, and re-run.

Re-review at d84c295. My last review was @8e99d496 (the ▸ glyph failure).
The merge of main 418ac6a looks right: git show --remerge-diff d84c295a shows only the catalogue conflict regions resolved with both sides' rows kept. Local run at this head, all green:
cargo fmt --all --checkcargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --test it -- fonts:: combine file_managers(94 passed)cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n(61 passed)cargo test -p pdfcraft --test it linux_service_menu(2 passed)cargo test -p pdfcraft --bins -- finder_combine single_instance(20 passed)cargo clippy -p pdfcraft --all-targets -- -D warnings
Hosted checks also pass.
Blocking: the ▸ fix (55d995c) orphaned the Finder hint's translations. Lookups are by exact English text (i18n/mod.rs header). The source string at crates/ui-egui/src/combine_ui.rs:1258 still reads right-click ▸ Quick Actions ▸ … under Quick Actions ▸ Customize., but 55d995c changed the key column (not the translation) to > in the catalogues. At d84c295, these 14 catalogues contain only the >-keyed row, so it never matches:
bg, cs, de, el, es, fr, hu, it, kk, pt-br, ru, sl, tr, uk
In those languages the hint falls back to the English text, ▸ included, which is the glyph the fonts test found missing in Inter. fonts::primary_ui_fonts_cover_latin_and_cyrillic_catalogs passes because it only scans the translation column (split('\t').nth(2)), so the failure was hidden rather than fixed. Also, ca, fi, id, lt, ro, sq and vi now have both a ▸-keyed and a >-keyed row for this hint; the > one is dead.
The simplest fix is to change the source string at combine_ui.rs:1258 to >. That is the same separator the translations use, and it also keeps ▸ out of the English UI. Then key every catalogue row with that text and drop the duplicates. Separately, pl.tsv's translation still contains ▸; pl isn't in the fonts test's catalogue list, so please check it renders.
I haven't re-checked the rest of the feature beyond the commits since my last review. The issue above is the only thing blocking.
…tches it 55d995c changed the catalogue keys to '>' but not the source string, so the lookups missed and the hint fell back to English with the glyph Inter lacks. One row per catalogue now, keyed by the new text; the duplicates are gone and no translation of the hint keeps the triangle. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-review at SHA 702504d (my last review, CHANGES_REQUESTED, was at d84c295).
The blocker is fixed. The source string in combine_ui.rs now uses > between the Finder menu steps, and each catalogue has exactly one row keyed by that text, so the lookup matches again; the earlier workaround that kept ▸ in the translation column only is gone, and the dead duplicate rows (ca, fi, id, lt, ro, sq, vi) were removed.
Checked: from the PR's own diff, 29 catalogue files each carry exactly one row for the string (plus the one in combine_ui.rs), every row has a source and a translation column (three fields), and none contains ▸.
Not verified: I did not run the build or the fonts:: / combine / file_managers tests locally (the author reports running them at 3008019); I did not assess the translations themselves.
apps/pdfcraft/src/main.rs: took upstream's (tests split out to src/tests.rs); re-applied the --combine flag, Launch.combine, Request::Combine claim and combine_paths call; moved the desktop-entry test into src/tests.rs. crates/ui-egui/src/combine_ui.rs: deleted upstream (moved to workflows/combine_ui/); combine_paths re-added in workflows/combine_ui/session.rs beside add_folder_to_combine. crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs: took upstream's (OsEvent and its handler moved); OsEvent::Combine added in hooks.rs and its handler in app.rs. parity/acrobat-features.toml: upstream's evidence paths for core.open (moved test path) with the PR's notes; organize.combine-files merged cleanly. Re-review at SHA 67f961b (my last APPROVE was at 702504d). Gate is green. The windows-arm64 package and install-and-run checks are green too.
What changed since my approval: the branch was re-merged with main twice, and main made the Windows installer dual-scope (Scope="perUserOrMachine", 50+ HKMU entries). The PR followed it: its Combine files shell entries in packaging/windows/pdfcraft.wxs (44 rows across 11 extensions) move from Root="HKLM" to Root="HKMU", test-msi.ps1 now asserts the context-sensitive root (-1) for them, as main's tests do for the other entries, instead of the HKLM value 2, and its OK line says "dual-scope guards". Also, from the earlier re-merge: the test the_desktop_entry_offers_combine_files moved out of its enclosing mod (dedented), and unreadable_notice became pub(super) with its import added.
Checked: compared the PR-only deltas at the two heads, ignoring file names and indentation, and read every differing line (122). With HKLM→HKMU normalised on the old side, the only remaining differences are the assertion value and message wording above and the visibility and import lines; each of the 44 registry rows differs only in its root, with the same key, value name, type and data. I checked main's wxs uses HKMU for its own per-user-or-machine entries and that the PR's file keeps the same two HKLM lines main has (the machine-scope RegistrySearch entries). No logic line in the Rust code changed.
Not verified: I did not run the installer or the MSI test; the hosted gate and the windows-arm64 package and install checks are green at this head.

What does it change?
The Finder half of #2541 (#585): "Combine files in PdfCraft" under Finder's right-click ▸ Quick Actions on macOS. Select PDFs or pictures, choose it, and Combine files opens with them listed in order, in the running PdfCraft or a new one. Nothing is combined until Combine is pressed, as on Windows and Linux.
This branch is stacked on #2541 (
pr/combine-right-click): the diff shows both until that one merges. Its own change is one new file,apps/pdfcraft/src/finder_combine.rs(409 lines, 4 tests), and three lines inmain.rsandapple_events.rs.Why a Quick Action, and not the other ways
Finder does not start an app with the files as arguments, so the
--combineroute of Explorer and the Linux desktop action does not exist here. The ways that do:NSServicesin the app's Info.plist + an Objective-C method). The proper one, but the provider is an Objective-C class with a selector that Finder calls, which meansobjc2andunsafe; this workspace forbidsunsafe, andfmv_macos_events(what the app already uses for Apple events) delivers only Open and Quit. What macOS offers for exactly this: Finder lists.workflowservices from that folder, no signing, no extension, nounsafe. Its one "Run Shell Script" step receives the selected paths as arguments, writes them one a line tofiles.pdfcraft-combinein a freshpdfcraft-combine.*folder in the user's temporary folder, and runsopen -b ai.storyteller.pdfcrafton that file. The open arrives as an ordinary Apple event (so the running app, or a fresh launch, gets it the same way as a double-clicked PDF), andfinder_combine::from_openturns an opened list into the sameOsEvent::Combinea--combinelaunch makes. What makes the Quick Action acceptable rather than a hack:
finder_combine::installwrites the workflow's two files when they are missing or differ (a new version rewrites them). macOS lists a new Quick Action only after it is ticked under Quick Actions ▸ Customize, and the app no longer tries to tick it (see the update below), so on macOS the Combine files tab's empty state says where it is. Failures are logged; the app works without it.files.pdfcraft-combine, sit in apdfcraft-combine.*folder directly inside the temporary folder (canonical paths compared), be a real file in a real folder (neither may be a link, checked withsymlink_metadata), and be at most a megabyte; it is removed once read, folder and all. Any other file, anywhere else, opens as a document exactly as before. An empty, oversized or unreadable list combines nothing and opens nothing.~/Library/Servicesand$TMPDIRonly; no admin, no system folders, nothing in the bundle changes. How was it verified?

finder_combine::listed: the only place that trusts a file as a list; the three conditions are the security argument.installwrites only inside its own….workflowfolder now; nothing else in the user's defaults is touched.document.wflowis Automator's own format, written out by hand (the UUIDs are fixed; Automator accepts them). If you'd rather ship a.workflowas a packaged asset instead of writing it from code, say so; writing it keeps it in step with the bundle id.Never-crash
