Problem

Preparing a large PDF can take long enough to leave a visible pause even when it runs in the background and the UI thread remains free. While preparation is underway, PdfCraft shows no opening feedback, so the Open action can look ignored and users cannot tell whether the document is still being processed. This makes the app feel unresponsive and gives users no confirmation that their request was accepted.

This PR shows an opening indicator as soon as the native open request is queued and keeps it visible until preparation succeeds or fails. It addresses feedback during the wait; it does not speed up PDF preparation or change CPU or memory use.

Review direction

Check the request-to-feedback lifecycle: once a native open request is queued, the opening card should appear while background preparation runs, show the pending filename, and clear on success or failure. It should coexist with the optimization card and toast, and respect reduced-motion settings. The indicator is deliberately indeterminate because the parser exposes no meaningful progress fraction.

Summary

Add localized opening feedback immediately when a native PDF open is requested. The existing background loading path is unchanged. The spinner requests repaints at most 12.5 times per second when motion is enabled. This is a UI feedback change; it does not claim faster opening or lower CPU or memory use. Refs #307.

Correctness evidence

  • A held-worker UI regression checks that the card appears before preparation completes and clears when the request finishes or fails. It failed when the request-time notice refresh was removed.
  • In the native egui Harness, opened the supplied vmware-cloud-foundation-9-1.pdf (192.9 MB) while holding the preparation worker. The opening label appeared before release; the document then opened with 9,156 pages.
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check, strict UI crate Clippy, and cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets, and cargo xtask wasm passed.
  • The UI library suite passed (364 tests, 1 ignored). The full UI crate suite had one environment-dependent failure: tests/fonts.rs::chinese_ui_uses_an_installed_chinese_face, because the installed Simplified Chinese face lacks 远. The other test targets passed.
  • Dependency-inclusive Clippy reports an unrelated existing clippy::collapsible_match at crates/forms/src/af.rs:628; strict Clippy for the changed UI crate passes.

Scope and limits

The visual check used the supplied large PDF, but this environment could not capture a screenshot because its headless WGPU renderer had no adapter and macOS Launch Services was unavailable. No timing or memory benchmark is claimed.

Base and history

Based on main at b5467d9. The branch retains its original PR head and includes the main sync without rewriting the contributor branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Native PDF opening now displays an “Opening…” notice while the document is being prepared. The notice clears when opening succeeds or fails, respects motion preferences, and can appear alongside other progress notices.
    • The notice updates to match the current language while the document is opening.

📝 Walkthrough

The native UI now displays a localized opening notice for the first pending document while it is prepared. The notice clears when no opens remain. It uses motion-preference behavior and stacks with the progress notice.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Desktop: show an opening indicator during PDF preparation" matches the main change. The changeset adds a localized indeterminate opening notice in the native UI that appears when a PDF open is queued and clears on success or failure. The title is specific and concise. It does not claim speed gains, which matches the PR objectives.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main structure. It explains the problem and the change under "Problem" and "Summary", and it has verification evidence, scope limits, and a review direction. It reports cargo fmt, Clippy, cargo xtask layers/assets/wasm, and test results, and it states that the headless renderer had no adapter. Several template sections are missing or not addressed: "Never-crash" checklist, "Provenance" checklist, "Security" checklist, "Parity and reach" (including whether parity/acrobat-features.toml changed and whether an automation tool exposes the feature headlessly), and whether docs were updated. The "Tests" note asks that the test fail before the fix. The description says the held-worker test failed when the refresh was removed, which partly covers that. The "Anything a reviewer should look at first" section is covered by the review direction, but not in the template's wording. These gaps are non-critical, so the check passes.

Read the Rust changes at 7e7b763 in full (lib.rs, widgets.rs and the worker test; I checked that Opening {name}… is in every catalogue). CI is green and I found no blockers.

  • refresh_opening_notice is called after queueing an open and after poll_pending_opens reassembles pending_opens. It shows the first pending open and clears when none are left, so a failed or cancelled preparation clears it as well as a successful one.
  • The notice is native-only, with every use behind cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32")). The toast lift now adds the progress and opening heights, so the three cards stack without overlapping.
  • The worker test checks both the label while the prepare barrier is held and its disappearance after the commit.

Non-blocking: the card appears as soon as the open is queued, so a fast open of a small file will flash it for a frame or two. A short delay (for example about 200 ms before it first draws) would avoid that without changing the behaviour for large files.

Rebased onto main as one commit (the branch had merged main several times). The catalogs added on main since (ca, ckb, fi, hi, id, ko, lo, nb, ro, sq, th) get the "Opening {name}…" string too; ATTRIBUTION.toml no longer records catalog hashes.

Comment thread crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs Outdated
A language change while an open was pending kept the notice in the previous language: the label was built once per pending open. The notice records its language and is rebuilt when the current language differs (CodeRabbit review).
