Summary

Fixes #3508. Panasonic DMC-GF6 RW2 files can store ISO in private IFD0 tags, so LightCraft now exposes the ISO in extracted and imported photo metadata.

Root cause

The RAW probe already reads RW2 IFD0 tags 0x0017 and 0x0037, but catalog imports obtain metadata from lightcraft_meta::extract. The EXIF projection handled standard ISO tags only, leaving catalog ISO empty even when RAW probing had found a value.

Changes

  • In try_read_exif_with, recognize the RW2 IIU\0 signature and, only when standard EXIF ISO is absent, use a positive integer from IFD0 tag 0x0017, then tag 0x0037.
  • Keep the fallback at the container-aware EXIF entry point. The TIFF parser does not retain original header magic, and interpreting these private tag numbers unconditionally could misread unrelated TIFF/DNG metadata.
  • Add procedural metadata and engine import regressions for both private tags, malformed/zero values, standard and extended EXIF precedence, unrelated metadata, and source-byte preservation.
  • Document the behavior without changing parity status or roadmap accounting.

Testing

Passed:

  • cargo test -p lightcraft-meta --lib rw2_iso (5 tests)
  • cargo test -p lightcraft-meta --lib exif (38 tests)
  • cargo test -p lightcraft-meta (155 unit tests and 4 integration tests)
  • cargo test -p lightcraft-engine --lib rw2_iso (1 test)
  • cargo test -p lightcraft-raw --lib rw2 (11 tests)
  • cargo fmt --all --check
  • git diff --check

The fresh CLI smoke test imported procedural RW2 fixtures into isolated libraries. photo.inspect reported ISO 160 from the private tag and ISO 400 from standard EXIF; both source files remained byte-identical.

cargo xtask ci did not pass locally. Its format, Clippy, and HEIF stages passed, but the workspace test stage failed in two unrelated UI integration tests: dialog_role::settings_is_a_dialog_too and accessibility::every_interactive_node_has_a_name_in_every_view_and_tool. They panic on missing Georgian and ▸ glyphs in this machine's optional CRAFT_FONTS_DIR bundle. The report lists 149 corpus/model/font/GPU-dependent skips; parity, layers, assets, and WASM stages did not run. The RW2-focused tests passed.

Compatibility and risk

The private tags are interpreted only when the TIFF payload starts with the RW2 signature and standard EXIF ISO is absent. Standard and extended EXIF ISO remain authoritative. Ordinary TIFF/DNG files and RAW pixel decoding are unchanged.

Attribution

The commit preserves the authenticated contributor's configured Git author identity.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Panasonic RW2 files can now display ISO metadata from supported private tags when standard EXIF ISO is unavailable. Standard EXIF ISO remains preferred; private tags are considered only for RW2 files, not ordinary TIFF or DNG files.
  • Documentation
    • Updated format notes to explain which RW2 private ISO tags are supported and when they are used in relation to standard EXIF ISO.

Walkthrough

For files with the IIU\0 signature, missing standard EXIF ISO can now be read from Panasonic private IFD0 tags 0x0017 and 0x0037. Standard EXIF ISO remains preferred. Ordinary TIFF and DNG files do not use these tags.

Changes: RW2 ISO extraction

Layer / File(s) Summary
RW2 metadata fallback
crates/meta/src/exif.rs, crates/meta/README.md, docs/parity-checklist.md
When standard EXIF ISO is missing and the file has the RW2 signature, metadata extraction checks positive tag 0x0017, then positive tag 0x0037. Tests cover tag precedence, standard and extended ISO precedence, invalid values, and ordinary TIFF behavior.
Import coverage and release notes
crates/engine/src/tests/import.rs, docs/gaps.md, docs/parity-checklist.md, docs/whats-new.md
Import tests verify private ISO fallback, standard ISO precedence, and unchanged source bytes. Documentation records the RW2 fallback rule; docs/gaps.md also updates review status notes.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A crafted RW2 can supply ISO to its imported catalog record and existing ISO-dependent operations, including user-invoked exposure matching. This is an additional input representation for authority already reachable through file-controlled standard EXIF ISO, rather than a new privileged execution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The RW2 signature is a format selector, not authentication of the file or camera. The relevant controls are successful parsing, the RW2-only gate, existing ISO precedence, and positive-value filtering before the result enters the existing numeric metadata field.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Photo identity and duplicate detection remain based on photo IDs, paths, and content hashes, not ISO. The new metadata source therefore does not introduce a separate ownership key or an ISO-dependent import recovery path.

Explanation

The title "Issue #3508: read ISO from Panasonic RW2 metadata" names the main change: the PR adds an ISO fallback that reads Panasonic RW2 private IFD0 tags 0x0017 and 0x0037 when standard EXIF ISO is absent. The title is specific, short, and matches the changeset and the linked issue, which reports missing ISO for Panasonic GF6 RW2 photos. The issue number prefix is a minor style point and does not affect relevance.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3508 requires ISO detection for Panasonic GF6 RW2 files. try_read_exif_with uses IFD0 tags 0x0017, then 0x0037, only for the IIU\0 signature and only when standard or extended EXIF ISO is absent. The implementation accepts positive integer TIFF values and preserves standard EXIF precedence. Tests cover both tags, invalid values, precedence, and ordinary TIFF isolation. The engine import regression and reported smoke test cover catalog metadata.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The code, tests, and focused documentation support [#3508]. However, the docs/gaps.md review metadata also records unrelated changes for import rename-sequence exhaustion, thumbnail previews, Sony ILCE-6700 distortion, EXIF clock validation, JPEG ICC APP2 validation, brush-segment behavior, and Linux x64 CI coverage. These changes do not implement the RW2 ISO requirement.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated docs/gaps.md status entries from this pull request. Keep only the RW2 private ISO entry and related issue #3508 documentation, or move the unrelated updates to separate pull requests.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the head of the diff: tests for reading the ISO of a Panasonic RW2 (issue #3508): a fixture builder rw2_iso_fixture(private_iso, standard_iso) makes a small RW2 with IfdBuilders (sensor width and height, CFA pattern, 12-bit packed raw, a Panasonic private ISO in IFD0 tag 0x0017, make and model, an Exif IFD holding the standard ISO when given) with the IIU\0 signature and a raw payload of the right size, and the test rw2_iso_imports_private_metadata_and_preserves_source_bytes imports it through the metadata extractor and checks that the private ISO reaches the catalogue while the standard Exif keeps precedence and the source bytes are unchanged. The fixture is synthetic and built in code, so no binary file is added. This PR overlaps lightcraft#3518 (which fills the Exif from the JpgFromRaw and falls back to the private ISO at tags 0x0017 and 0x0037), which I have commented on: both fix #3508 in exif.rs, and the maintainers should choose one. I only read the test side; the implementation is in a part I did not fetch. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Status: waiting_author.

ReviewerA: overlap confirmed. #3518 is broader because it also supplements missing EXIF from JpgFromRaw. This PR now includes the field-type guard and regression in commit 5c8afe1d746e04f66d3948ada835fb2efa33086; the same Undefined-field issue affects the private ISO fallback in #3518. I have not changed that contributor branch. The updated PR is open for maintainers to select one implementation; both should not merge. Hosted checks for this head are running. Local cargo xtask ci reports two unrelated UI glyph failures (U+10E5 and U+25B8).

Nitpick Add a negative signed-value case to the RW2 ISO tests.

379-380: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a negative signed-value case to the RW2 ISO tests.

rw2_private_iso accepts the signed field types SByte, SShort, SLong, and SLong8. Negative values are rejected only because Ifd::u32 reads through Value::get_u64, which returns None for them. No rw2_iso test uses a negative signed value. A change that turns SLong(-1) into a positive ISO would therefore leave every existing assertion passing. Add a fixture and an assertion that iso is None:

🧪 Suggested test
         let malformed = rw2_iso_tiff(Some(Value::Short(vec![0])), Some(Value::Long(vec![0])), None, None);
         assert_eq!(try_read_exif(&malformed).unwrap().iso, None);

+        let negative_signed = rw2_iso_tiff(Some(Value::SLong(vec![-1])), None, None, None);
+        assert_eq!(try_read_exif(&negative_signed).unwrap().iso, None);

Verified. The production path already rejects negative signed values through the TIFF accessors checked conversion to u64, so no parser change was needed. Added the requested RW2 fixture with Value::SLong(vec![-1]) for tag 0x0017 and asserted iso is None in commit 622b8e4. Validation: cargo test -p lightcraft-meta (155 unit tests and 4 integration tests), cargo fmt --all --check, and git diff --check passed.

The useful end-to-end piece from this PR, importing an RW2 through the library and checking that ISO reaches the catalog, is now on #3518 (commit e082dd1), adapted to its metadata code. #3518 also fills missing fields from the JpgFromRaw Exif, so it covers more of #3508. With the test carried over, only one metadata implementation needs review, and this PR could be closed in favour of #3518.
