Data: Analysis ToolPak two-factor Anova, z-Test, Fourier Analysis, Random Number Generation and Sampling - #495
This pull request completes the Analysis ToolPak introduced in #320 (#312). That work provides 13 of Excel's 19 tools through data.analysisToolPak and the Data Analysis dialog. The six remaining tools are added here as new tool values of the same command, written in the structures that #320 established: each tool builds a Grid report, the shared write_report places it in an output range or on a new worksheet (refusing to overwrite data unless overwrite is set), and distribution values are taken from the worksheet functions, so the reports agree with the formulas a user would write.
Anova: Two-Factor With Replication

Changes
Two-factor Anova. Without replication, the input holds one observation for each combination of a row level and a column level; the error term is the residual after both main effects. With replication, the input holds column labels in its first row and sample labels in its first column, and each sample spans rowsPerSample rows; the report adds the interaction term and the within-cell error. Sums of squares are computed from deviations (not by subtraction of totals), so they are never negative through rounding. F, P-value and F crit come from F.DIST.RT and F.INV.RT, as in the single-factor Anova.
Fourier Analysis. An iterative radix-2 fast Fourier transform. The forward transform is unscaled and the inverse divides by N, so the inverse of the forward transform returns the input. Input cells are read as IMREAL and IMAGINARY read them, so complex text such as 3+4i is accepted, and results are written as COMPLEX text. Parts smaller than 10^-13 of the largest value are rounding noise of the transform and are written as 0.
Random Number Generation. Numbers come from a xoshiro256** generator seeded through SplitMix64 (both public-domain algorithms). The same seed always repeats the numbers; a run without a seed takes one from the clock and reports it in the result, so the run can be reproduced. They are not Excel's numbers, since Excel's generator is not documented. Normal numbers use the Box–Muller transform; binomial and Poisson numbers invert cumulative tables built from BINOM.DIST and POISSON.DIST; discrete numbers invert the probabilities of a two-column value and probability range. Output is capped at 1,000,000 numbers, trials at 1,000,000 and lambda at 100,000, and every size is checked before anything is allocated.
Sampling. Periodic sampling takes every period-th value; random sampling draws samples values with replacement, with the same seed handling as Random Number Generation.
Dialog. Each new tool has a form in the Data Analysis dialog. The Random Number Generation form shows the parameters of the selected distribution, and the Sampling form shows Period or Number of Samples according to the method. The tool list and the field labels are English, as are those of the existing tools.
Documentation.docs/gaps.md and docs/target-app-parity.md record that the ToolPak now has all 19 tools; chart output remains.
Update (2026-10-31)
Rebased onto main 981fad1. Main had moved the ToolPak forms into crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/analysis.rs and the UI tests into crates/ui-egui/tests/it/; the forms and tests now live there. Main's clippy limit on cognitive complexity split the two-factor Anova test into one test per tool. Fixes added, each with a test that fails without it (docs excepted):
8db7ec5: the Two-Factor Without Replication Labels caption reads "Labels in first row and first column", which is what the tool does.
eee7943: options typed as text that is not a number (for example "0,3") are refused instead of falling back to the default.
345a350: an Alpha that is not a number is refused; this also applies to the existing t-tests, F-Test and single-factor Anova, which share the same reader.
ab64b53 and d335b6d: the count and seed fields show only where they apply; a patterned sequence neither reads nor reports a seed.
4aca29d: the Random Seed caption says that a blank seed draws a new sequence. The seed used is returned in the seed field of the command result.
63350c8: the tool options scroll in a short window, so the output options and OK stay visible.
f8a4dea and e7bbc60: timestamp lines and revision history in docs/gaps.md and docs/target-app-parity.md; Forecast Sheet is no longer listed as missing.
Update (2026-11-01)
Main (f503043, release 0.15.0) is merged in as 8495cfd, a merge commit, so the reviewed commits keep their ids. Conflicts, both in documentation:
docs/gaps.md: main had added the Solver Load/Save Model, Reset All and Solver Options sentences to §13 but still said "13 of 19 tools" and "no Forecast Start option yet"; this branch had the "all 19 tools; chart output remains" bullet in their place. Both are kept: main's Solver sentences and this branch's bullet. The header and the revision row carry today's date.
docs/target-app-parity.md: the What-if row combines this branch's "all 19 tools" with main's Solver list; the revision row is re-dated, and its remark on Forecast Sheet is dropped because main's Load/Save Model row already records that move.
Review fix:
5f039ce: Fourier Analysis no longer zeroes parts relative to the largest output. The cleanup threshold is the transform's own rounding bound, 8 · ε · log2(N) · Σ(|re_n| + |im_n|) over the input, divided by N for the inverse (Higham, Accuracy and Stability of Numerical Algorithms, 2nd ed., chapter 24). With N = 1 there are no butterfly stages and nothing is zeroed, so 100000000000000+1i returns unchanged from both transforms; a harmonic of 4e-7 beside a DC term of 8e6 is kept and the inverse recovers the input. Tests fourier_analysis_keeps_a_small_imaginary_part_beside_a_large_real_one and fourier_analysis_round_trip_recovers_small_components_beside_a_large_dc fail on the previous code.
f903747 (upstream CodeRabbit, after the push): the binomial and Poisson tables of Random Number Generation are built from one worksheet-function value at the mode and the recurrence pmf(k+1) = pmf(k) · (n − k)/(k + 1) · p/(1 − p) (λ/(k + 1) for Poisson), outward until the terms vanish on the left and the cumulative probability reaches 1 within f64 resolution on the right, with p = 0 and p = 1 as exact single-outcome cases. Before, BINOM.DIST or POISSON.DIST was dispatched for every k from 0 to the number of trials (1,000,001 calls at the limit). A million trials with p = 1 is now one table entry and with p = 0.5 about 23,000. Tests binomial_and_poisson_tables_agree_with_the_worksheet_functions (the recurrence against BINOM.DIST and POISSON.DIST to 1e-12 relative) and binomial_and_poisson_draws_at_the_limits_are_tabulated_quickly.
cargo xtask ci passes on the head (all 10 steps; 2,877 tests passed, 1 ignored), and each new commit builds with cargo build --workspace --all-targets.
Testing
Anova: Two-Factor Without Replication reproduces the hardness-testing example of Montgomery, Design and Analysis of Experiments (Example 4.1): SS 0.385, 0.825, 0.080 and 1.290 on 3, 3, 9 and 15 degrees of freedom, F = 14.44.
Anova: Two-Factor With Replication reproduces Montgomery's battery-life example (Example 5.1): SS 10,683.72 (material), 39,118.72 (temperature), 9,613.78 (interaction), 18,230.75 (error, 27 df) and 77,646.97 (total); F = 7.91, 28.97 and 3.56; interaction P-value 0.0186.
z-Test: the statistic against its definition, the tail against NORM.S.DIST, and the critical values 1.644854 and 1.959964 of the standard normal table at α = 0.05.
Fourier Analysis: the transform of 1, 2, 3, 4 (10, −2+2i, −2, −2−2i), its inverse, a sampled cosine (N/2 at the first and last frequencies, 0 elsewhere), complex text input, and the limits on the number of values.
Random Number Generation: identical output for identical seeds; sample mean and variance against the theoretical values for the uniform, normal, binomial and Poisson distributions; Bernoulli and discrete proportions; an exact patterned sequence; and refusal of oversized output and invalid parameters.
Sampling: an exact periodic sample, a reproducible random sample drawn from the input, and invalid periods and sample counts.
UI: every tool's form opens in the Data Analysis dialog, and the z-Test and Random Number Generation forms run from the dialog.
cargo xtask ci passes on the head (all 10 steps; 2,877 tests), and cargo build --workspace --all-targets passes on each commit.
Translation of the Data Analysis dialog's tool names and field labels, together with the existing ones.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added two-factor ANOVA, two-sample z-tests, Fourier analysis, random number generation, and sampling to the Analysis ToolPak.
Added tool-specific forms with distribution settings, ANOVA labels, and sampling options. Random generation and random sampling support seeds; patterned sequences and periodic sampling have their own settings.
Improvements
Analysis forms scroll in shorter windows while keeping output options and the OK button visible.
Invalid numeric inputs and unsupported data configurations return errors.
Documentation
Updated Analysis ToolPak guidance and parity information to reflect the available tools.
…) and z-Test
Builds on the ToolPak of storytold#320. data.analysisToolPak gains three tools:
Anova: Two-Factor Without Replication (rows and columns as factors, the
residual as the error term), Anova: Two-Factor With Replication (samples of
rowsPerSample rows, with the interaction and within-cell terms) and z-Test:
Two Sample for Means (known variances, normal tails and critical values from
NORM.S.DIST and NORM.S.INV). Each has a form in the Data Analysis dialog.
Tests check the reports against Montgomery's hardness-testing and
battery-life examples.
data.analysisToolPak gains Fourier Analysis: the discrete Fourier transform
or its inverse of one row or column of 2^k values (at most 4096), by an
iterative radix-2 FFT. Input cells are read as IMREAL and IMAGINARY read
them, so complex text such as 3+4i works, and the results are written as
COMPLEX text. Tests check known transforms (1, 2, 3, 4; a sampled cosine),
the inverse round trip and the input limits.
data.analysisToolPak gains the last two of Excel's 19 tools. Random Number
Generation draws uniform, normal, Bernoulli, binomial, Poisson and discrete
numbers, or writes a patterned sequence, in one or more columns; binomial and
Poisson draws invert tables built from BINOM.DIST and POISSON.DIST. Sampling
takes every period-th value or a random sample with replacement. Both use a
seeded xoshiro256** generator: the same seed repeats the numbers, and a run
without one reports the seed it chose. Output is capped at 1,000,000 numbers.
…aption names the first column
With Labels ticked, Anova: Two-Factor Without Replication takes the column
names from the first row and the row names from the first cell of every data
row. The form's caption read "Labels in first row", so a user with column
headers but no row names who ticked it would lose the first data column. The
caption now reads "Labels in first row and first column", and the command's
params doc says the same. A dialog test checks the caption.
… the 19 tools
docs/gaps.md (§13) and docs/target-app-parity.md (what-if and analysis) gain
their Last updated line and a revision-history row for the Analysis ToolPak
reaching all 19 of Excel's tools.
Random Number Generation (from, to, mean, standardDeviation, p, lambda, step,
and the whole-number options) and z-Test (hypothesizedDifference) read their
options with a default for anything that did not parse, so a form value typed
as "0,3" or a typo quietly ran with the default. A blank or absent option
still takes the default; any other value that is not a finite number is now
an error naming the option.
alpha() took any value that did not parse as the default 0.05, so a typed
"0,01" ran z-Test, both two-factor Anovas (and the existing t-tests, F-Test
and single-factor Anova, which share it) at the wrong significance level
without a word. A blank or absent Alpha still means 0.05; any other value that
is not a finite number is now an error.
…for a patterned sequence
A patterned sequence takes its length from From, To, step and the two repeat
counts and ignores Number of Random Numbers, so a count typed there did
nothing. The form shows the count only for the random distributions, and the
patterned options carry a note that the repeats set how many values are
written.
…new sequence
Random Number Generation and random Sampling labelled the seed "blank for
none", but a blank seed makes the engine choose a new one, so each run draws
different numbers. The caption now reads "blank for a new sequence".
The Data Analysis window cannot be resized, and the patterned Random Number
Generation form (seven distribution choices and five pattern fields, each
label above its box) is taller than a 600-point window, so OK ended below the
window's edge. The tool's options now sit in a vertical scroll area capped to
the window's height less the title, output options and buttons, which always
stay in view.
…ssing
docs/target-app-parity.md's what-if and analysis row still listed Forecast
Sheet as missing, while data.forecastSheet is in the catalog and docs/gaps.md
§13 lists it as present. The row now lists it with the other analysis tools,
and today's revision-history row says so.
A patterned sequence and periodic sampling draw nothing, but the form showed
the Random Seed field for both, and Random Number Generation read the seed for
every distribution: a seed left in the form that was not a whole number
refused a patterned run, and a valid one was reported as the seed used. The
seed field now shows only for the random distributions and random sampling,
and a patterned run neither reads nor reports a seed.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to d335b
The new operations retain explicit overwrite permission, workbook protection checks, output limits, and atomic report writes. No introduced security-boundary bypass was identified in the reviewed paths. Residual uncertainty remains around worst-case execution costs and unexamined callers.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — For the reviewed command path, caller-controlled tool options and workbook contents can drive computation and replace a bounded report rectangle or create a worksheet in the current Session's workbook. The inspected implementations do not establish additional cross-service or tenant authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The pre-existing output controls remain applicable to every new tool: occupied output requires overwrite=true, protected workbook structure blocks worksheet creation, and the edit transaction checks worksheet protection before committing. The dialog requires an explicit Replace action before setting overwrite=true.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Generating reports before mutation and retaining clone-then-commit editing contains ordinary validation and returned-error failures without exposing partially cleared output or a partially created worksheet. This source-level guarantee does not establish crash durability or bounded execution time.

[P2] Preserve small, valid Fourier components instead of zeroing them globally
crates/engine/src/cmd/analysis.rs:1370-1372
The cleanup threshold is based on the largest real or imaginary component anywhere in the output, so it deletes valid signal components, not just transform rounding noise. For example, a one-cell input containing the complex number 100000000000000+1i is accepted, and the N=1 transform correctly leaves it unchanged, but this cleanup sets its imaginary component to zero because 1 <= 1e14 * 1e-13. The output therefore becomes purely real even though no FFT arithmetic occurred. The same loss affects small frequency components beside a large DC component and prevents a forward/inverse round trip from recovering them.
Please preserve the computed coefficients (or make any display-only rounding non-destructive) and add regressions for this N=1 case and mixed-magnitude forward/inverse inputs.
Validation: the CI gate for the synthetic merge of this head with base 67e39fa passed all ten stages, with 2,777 tests passed and one skipped: https://github.com/storytold/gridcraft/actions/runs/41214500859/job/124576081443 . The Sonar job was green but its scan and coverage steps were skipped. The finding above was verified by tracing the complex parser, FFT identity path and serialization, plus an independent Python arithmetic reproduction; I did not run a new Rust regression or manual UI test.
docs/gaps.md: main's Solver Options, Load/Save Model and Reset All sentences kept with this branch's Analysis ToolPak bullet (all 19 tools; the stale 13-of-19 and Forecast Start sentences stay removed); the branch's revision row re-dated 2026-11-01 above main's rows; Last updated 2026-11-01.
docs/target-app-parity.md: main's Solver list (Load/Save Model, Reset All and Solver Options) kept with this branch's "all 19 tools"; the branch's revision row re-dated 2026-11-01, without the Forecast Sheet clause that main's Load/Save Model row already records; Last updated 2026-11-01.
…e ones
The cleanup after the transform zeroed every part at or below 1e-13 of the
largest output, so a one-value input such as 1e14 + 1i lost its imaginary
part although a transform of one value performs no arithmetic, and a small
harmonic beside a large DC term was lost the same way. The cutoff is now the
rounding bound of the transform itself, 8 · ε · log2(N) · Σ(|re_n| + |im_n|),
divided by N for the inverse (whose outputs are divided by N): it depends on
the input and the number of butterfly stages, never on the largest output,
and is zero for N = 1. An input sum that overflows disables the cleanup
instead of zeroing everything. Two regression tests cover the one-value case
and an eight-point round trip of 1e6 + 1e-7 cos(2πn/8).

…ribution, not the trials
Random Number Generation tabulated a binomial or Poisson distribution by
evaluating BINOM.DIST or POISSON.DIST through worksheet-function dispatch
for every outcome from 0 upward, so a million trials with p = 1 meant
1,000,001 calls and a table of as many entries. The table is now built from
one value at the mode and the recurrence pmf(k + 1) = pmf(k) · (n − k)/(k + 1)
· p/(1 − p) (λ/(k + 1) for Poisson), outward in both directions: the left
tail ends where its terms vanish, the right tail once the cumulative
probability reaches 1 within f64 resolution, so the table is as wide as the
outcomes that matter (about 23,000 entries for Binomial(1,000,000, 0.5)).
p = 0 and p = 1 are exact cases with one outcome. The trials limit and the
draws are unchanged. Tests check the recurrence against BINOM.DIST and
POISSON.DIST to 1e-12 relative, the table width at a million trials, and
that the largest inputs complete in milliseconds with the right means.
Main f503043 is merged in (8495cfd, a merge commit; conflicts in docs/gaps.md and docs/target-app-parity.md only, resolved by keeping main's Solver sentences beside this branch's ToolPak bullet; details in the description's "Update (2026-11-01)").
[P2] Fourier cleanup: fixed in 5f039ce. The cleanup no longer compares parts with the largest output. It zeroes a part only at or below the transform's own rounding bound, 8 · ε · log2(N) · Σ(|re_n| + |im_n|) over the input, divided by N for the inverse, from the standard FFT error analysis (Higham, Accuracy and Stability of Numerical Algorithms, chapter 24). With N = 1 there are no butterfly stages, the bound is zero and 100000000000000+1i returns unchanged from both transforms. The tests fourier_analysis_keeps_a_small_imaginary_part_beside_a_large_real_one and fourier_analysis_round_trip_recovers_small_components_beside_a_large_dc (harmonics of 4e-7 beside a DC term of 8e6; the inverse recovers the input to 2e-9) fail on the previous code.
CodeRabbit's point after the push (the binomial table): fixed in f903747. The binomial and Poisson tables are built from one value at the mode and the recurrence outward (pmf(k+1) = pmf(k) · (n − k)/(k + 1) · p/(1 − p); λ/(k + 1) for Poisson), stopping where the terms vanish and where the cumulative probability reaches 1 within f64 resolution; p = 0 and p = 1 are exact single points. A million trials with p = 1 is one table entry and with p = 0.5 about 23,000, instead of 1,000,001 worksheet-function calls. binomial_and_poisson_tables_agree_with_the_worksheet_functions checks the recurrence against BINOM.DIST and POISSON.DIST to 1e-12 relative.

Summary
This pull request completes the Analysis ToolPak introduced in #320 (#312). That work provides 13 of Excel's 19 tools through
data.analysisToolPakand the Data Analysis dialog. The six remaining tools are added here as newtoolvalues of the same command, written in the structures that #320 established: each tool builds aGridreport, the sharedwrite_reportplaces it in an output range or on a new worksheet (refusing to overwrite data unlessoverwriteis set), and distribution values are taken from the worksheet functions, so the reports agree with the formulas a user would write. With these additions the Data Analysis dialog lists every tool that Excel's Analysis ToolPak provides.

Sums of squares are computed from deviations (not by subtraction of totals), so they are never negative through rounding. F, P-value and F crit come fromF.DIST.RTandF.INV.RT, as in the single-factor Anova.variance1andvariance2; the tail probabilities and critical values come fromNORM.S.DISTandNORM.S.INV. The layout follows the t-tests of Data: Analysis ToolPak with 13 tools and the Data Analysis dialog (#312) #320.IMREALandIMAGINARYread them, so complex text such as3+4iis accepted, and results are written asCOMPLEXtext. Parts smaller than 10^-13 of the largest value are rounding noise of the transform and are written as 0.BINOM.DISTandPOISSON.DIST; discrete numbers invert the probabilities of a two-column value and probability range. Output is capped at 1,000,000 numbers, trials at 1,000,000 and lambda at 100,000, and every size is checked before anything is allocated.period-th value; random sampling drawssamplesvalues with replacement, with the same seed handling as Random Number Generation.docs/gaps.mdanddocs/target-app-parity.mdrecord that the ToolPak now has all 19 tools; chart output remains.Update (2026-10-31)
Rebased onto main 981fad1. Main had moved the ToolPak forms into
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/analysis.rsand the UI tests intocrates/ui-egui/tests/it/; the forms and tests now live there. Main's clippy limit on cognitive complexity split the two-factor Anova test into one test per tool. Fixes added, each with a test that fails without it (docs excepted):seedfield of the command result.docs/gaps.mdanddocs/target-app-parity.md; Forecast Sheet is no longer listed as missing.Update (2026-11-01)
The header and the revision row carry today's date.docs/target-app-parity.md: the What-if row combines this branch's "all 19 tools" with main's Solver list; the revision row is re-dated, and its remark on Forecast Sheet is dropped because main's Load/Save Model row already records that move.Review fix:
100000000000000+1ireturns unchanged from both transforms; a harmonic of 4e-7 beside a DC term of 8e6 is kept and the inverse recovers the input.
