Cells: hold Excel's 32,767-character limit at the three ways past it (#2635) - #2658
A cell with more text than Excel's 32,767 characters — counted in UTF-16 units, like LEN — saves to a .xlsx Excel refuses to open. Three paths let one in; this closes each at the point the issue measured.
& cuts like Excel
eval.rs's BinOp::Concat capped its result at 32767 * 4 bytes, which bounds memory but is not Excel's limit. It now cuts the result to 32,767 UTF-16 units with no error, as Excel's own concatenation does: =REPT("x",20000)&REPT("x",20000) keeps its first 32,767 characters. CONCAT, TEXTJOIN, REPT and SUBSTITUTE already returned #VALUE! past the limit and are unchanged.
Editing refuses an over-limit input, naming the cell
input_to_cell — the path cell.set, range.setValues, typing, paste, replace and text-to-columns all take — now refuses an input past the limit with an error naming the cell: B3: a cell holds at most 32,767 characters, and this is 32768 — Excel refuses more too. The count is UTF-16 units, so 16,384 characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane (32,768 units) are refused and 16,383 fit. The two callers that swallowed input_to_cell errors into a raw-text fallback (paste's table loop and replace) check explicitly instead, so an over-limit paste is refused rather than stored raw; text-to-columns refuses the over-limit part rather than silently clearing its destination cell.
Text files keep the field whole and warn
read_csv still keeps every field whole — splitting a 100,000-character field over rows or cutting it at 255 characters loses the record's shape, as the issue measured against Excel. What changed is the silence: io::open_bytes now returns a warning naming the count and the first over-limit cell — long.csv: 1 cell holds more than Excel's 32,767 characters and was kept whole, as the text file had it; Excel may refuse or repair the file this saves to (first: Sheet1!B2) — through the same warnings channel file.open already shows.
What is deliberately left out
The limit itself and its UTF-16 helpers live in gridcraft_core::addr (MAX_CELL_CHARS, utf16_len, cut_to_cell_chars) so the reader side can share them. A warning when saving a workbook that already holds an over-limit cell — from an .xlsx open, say — is left to #2532/#2539, which own that open-and-save behaviour; this PR closes the three ways that create such a cell without any file being involved.
Tests
cell_text_past_excels_limit_is_refused_and_concatenation_is_cut covers the 32,767/32,768 boundary, the astral-plane count, range.setValues, and the & cut. a_csv_field_past_the_cell_limit_is_kept_whole_with_a_warning covers a 100,000-character CSV field: kept whole, one warning naming B2, and a file inside the limit says nothing. The existing rich_clipboard_omits_html_when_escaping_exceeds_byte_budget built its over-limit cell through range.setValues, which now refuses; it builds the cell on the model instead, which is also the honest fixture — a file can hold such a cell even though editing can no longer create one.
Text concatenation now truncates results to the 32,767 UTF-16-unit cell text limit.
Bug Fixes
Oversized text entered, pasted, set through ranges, or produced by find-and-replace is rejected instead of being stored in a cell.
Text-to-columns rejects parts that exceed the cell text limit.
CSV and TSV/TXT imports retain oversized text fields and display a warning with the affected cell count, first cell address, and Excel compatibility notice.

Walkthrough
The change adds a 32,767 UTF-16 code-unit cell-text limit. Edit paths reject over-limit text, concatenation truncates to the limit, and CSV and TSV/TXT imports retain oversized fields while reporting a warning.
Changes: Cell Text Limit
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define the limit and truncate concatenation crates/core/src/addr.rs, crates/calc/src/eval.rs
Adds a shared UTF-16 length limit and truncation helper. String concatenation truncates results to the limit.
Check edits and generated cell text crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/data.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Cell input, range assignment, paste, replacement text, and text-to-columns output reject over-limit text. Tests cover the limit across these paths and concatenation truncation.
Warn on oversized imported text crates/engine/src/io.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
CSV and TSV/TXT imports retain oversized text and report the affected-cell count and first cell address. Tests cover CSV warnings. The temporary-file collision test is restricted to Unix.
storytold/gridcraft#2656: Addresses the same issue and overlaps on concatenation and input/import handling.
storytold/gridcraft#449: Changes number-to-text conversion used to supply numeric operands to concatenation.
storytold/gridcraft#2532: Handles the cell-text limit for XLSX imports and reports warnings for retained oversized text.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 12bf1
Boundary-sized text with a leading entry marker can be entered, pasted, and replaced without false rejection. The change is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 12bf1
The new checks improve cell-entry safety, and failed multi-cell edits remain atomic. A limited availability concern remains: concatenation now constructs and reserves input-sized strings before returning a shortened result, including when imported cells contain very large fields. Actual resource-exhaustion impact has not been measured.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: The capped concatenation result does not cap working allocations. Compared with the base's early rejection, head constructs the full concatenation and then reserves another input-sized buffer. Very large imported operands can therefore increase memory pressure and calculation work despite a small final result, weakening availability containment within the workbook-processing process. Resource exhaustion is inferred, not demonstrated.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified resource concern is scoped to the process calculating a workbook containing oversized text operands. Supplying text alone does not execute a formula; the data must be referenced by a calculation. Broader service or tenant impact was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Oversized imported fields can flow into concatenation, which now combines the full operands and reserves an equally large truncation buffer before returning a short value. Long concatenation chains continue with bounded text rather than propagating the base's size error, potentially repeating input-sized work. This supports the availability concern, but not a demonstrated denial of service.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Important countercontrols remain: native file reads reject files over 2 GiB, editing rejects oversized stored text, and concatenated output is capped. However, text import retains whole fields, and the native file cap is not a per-operation memory budget. Operand copies were already present before this PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The existing transaction boundary contains ordinary validation failures and repeated rejected edits without partial workbook commits. It does not establish recovery from allocator exhaustion, so edit atomicity does not resolve the separate calculation-resource concern.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Construct the permitted concatenation prefix directly from borrowed operands with bounded output capacity, stopping at the UTF-16 limit. This would preserve the intended result contract without requiring full concatenation or a second input-sized reservation.

The changes satisfy the three creation-path requirements in #2635. & truncation uses UTF-16 units. Editing paths reject over-limit stored text and name the cell. Text imports keep fields whole and warn with the count and first cell. The PR does not add the issue's save-time warning for an existing over-limit cell. The current diff only adds import-time warnings in crates/engine/src/io.rs; the PR description defers save behavior to #2532/#2539.

Check raw strings before direct storage.
The parse: false string branch constructs a Cell directly. It does not call input_to_cell, so a 32,768-UTF-16-unit string can bypass check_cell_text and be stored.

Validate the stored text after removing the text-entry marker.
The normal typed-input path removes a leading ' before storage, but check_cell_text counts it first. This rejects a marker plus 32,767 UTF-16 units even though the stored text fits the limit.
Keep the raw limit for formula input. Apply the stored-text limit after marker removal on the parsing path. Preserve the text-format branch, which currently stores the original input.

Right — the parse: false branch stored the text directly and skipped input_to_cell and its limit check. It now calls check_cell_text(text, at)? before storing, and the test covers that path too: range.setValues with parse: false and a 40,000-character string is refused with the same message as the parsed path.
cargo test -p gridcraft-engine: 465 passed; fmt and clippy clean.
Right — the parsing path stores parse_input's text with the leading ' stripped, so counting the raw input rejected a marker plus 32,767 units whose stored text fits.
input_to_cell now checks what the cell will hold: the stripped text on the parsing path, and the input as typed in a text-format cell (which keeps the marker). Formulas are unaffected — they don't start with ', and '=… goes down the parsing path as text. The strict pre-checks on the paste, replace and text-to-columns loops still count the raw string, which is right for them: their fallback stores the text as given.
Tests: a marker plus 32,767 units is stored (and reads back as 32,767 units without the marker); a marker plus 32,768 is refused.
cargo test -p gridcraft-engine: 465 passed; fmt and clippy clean.
If a TSV field starts with ' and contains exactly 32,767 UTF-16 units after that marker, check_cell_text(v, c) rejects the paste. The parsing path removes the marker, so the stored text would fit. The raw check in edit.replace has the same boundary error. Check the candidate cell’s text after parsing or fallback, and retain validation on the fallback path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Minor · Apply the limit check to the converted text. · data.rs:970-972
For a non-text destination, input_to_cell removes the leading ' marker before parsing. Therefore, ' plus 32,767 UTF-16 units produces an in-limit stored value.
The new check counts the marker before conversion and rejects the data.textToColumns operation. The unwrap_or(None) path does not store raw text. It clears the destination when conversion returns an error. Match input_to_cell’s stored-text calculation in this pre-check.

…torytold#2635)
A cell with more text than Excel's 32,767 characters (counted in UTF-16 units
like LEN) saves to a .xlsx that Excel refuses to open, and three paths let one
in:
- `&` cut its result at 32767*4 bytes, a memory bound, not Excel's limit; it
now cuts to 32,767 UTF-16 units, as Excel's own concatenation does.
- cell.set, range.setValues, typing, paste, replace and text-to-columns
refused nothing; they now refuse an over-limit input with an error that
names the cell.
- Text files keep every field whole, so a 100,000-character CSV field came in
silently; the open now keeps it whole and warns that Excel may refuse or
repair the file this saves to, naming the first over-limit cell.
The limit and its UTF-16 helpers live in gridcraft_core::addr so the reader
side (storytold#2532) can share them. The save-side warning is left to storytold#2532/storytold#2539's
planned warning work.
Paste (paste_text's cell loop) no longer pre-checks the raw field. It now matches on input_to_cell: the Ok path was validated inside (the stored, marker-stripped text); the Err path runs check_cell_text on the raw field before the fallback stores it as given — so a marker plus 32,767 units pastes as 32,767 stored units, while a plain 32,768 is still refused (the fallback would have stored it raw).
Replace is restructured the same way: the parsed result was validated inside input_to_cell, and the raw-result fallback is checked before storing.
Text-to-columns keeps its pre-check (its unwrap_or(None) clears the destination, so the refusal has to happen before), but the count is now what input_to_cell would store — the '-stripped text unless the destination is text-formatted.
Tests: a pasted TSV field of a marker plus 32,767 units stores 32,767; a plain 32,768 paste is refused; replacing "needle" with a marker plus 32,767 units stores 32,767.
cargo test -p gridcraft-engine: 465 passed; fmt and clippy clean.
This keeps over-limit cell text from leaking through edit, concatenation and import paths into workbooks Excel cannot reopen. I checked Excel 16.0 by COM: assigning 32,768 characters to a cell returned 32,767; pasting clipboard strings of 32,760, 32,767 and 32,768 characters returned 32,759 each, and opening a CSV field with 32,768 characters returned 32,759. If you would rather not, I can open a PR that credits you, keeps your commits and shows a git range-diff against this one, so you'll still get credit and have visible work.
