Closes #890.

Stacked. This sits on #2036 (layer 1, fix/text-compare-canonical) and also carries a fix to that branch, so until #2036 merges the diff here shows 12 commits. Please review and merge #2036 first; this PR then shrinks to the word-sort commit.

Why the fixture of #890 only matched 4 of 19 rows

Not the collation tables: Collation::Root ordered characters by code point, while Excel compares with CompareStringW without SORT_STRINGSORT — Windows word sort — and the documentation gives it two rules that code point order does not have:

  1. "all punctuation marks and other nonalphanumeric characters, except for the hyphen and the apostrophe, come before any alphanumeric character". That is why _x sorts first, ahead of 1. By code point _ is U+005F, after the digits, so we produced 1, 10, 2, _x.
  2. The hyphen and the apostrophe are the exception: out of the first level, used only to break ties, "to ensure that words such as 'coop' and 'co-op' stay together in a sorted list".

The space is not an exception, so it stays a nonalphanumeric and sorts before letters — which is why Excel puts a c before ab.

What this adds

Three levels: classed characters (nonalphanumeric < digit < letter) with the hyphen and apostrophe skipped, then the diacritics already there, then where those two characters stood. No case level is needed — case is already ignored, and a stable sort keeps apfel before Apfel.

Evidence, and which part carries the claim

The test that pins this sorts the "Word Sort" column of the Microsoft documentation above (billet | bills | bill's | cannot | cant | can't | con | coop | co-op) — a source Microsoft controls. The fixture of #890 is a second test and now passes 19/19, but it comes from a bug report, so it corroborates rather than decides. I would rather say which evidence the change rests on.

What changes, exactly

  • Seventeen ASCII characters move from after the digits to before them: : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~. Measured by flipped pairs, not moved indices — punctuation moving ahead shifts every later index, so counting indices reports the whole alphabet and says nothing.
  • The rule applies to anything that is neither letter nor digit, emoji and symbols included.
  • Words of letters and digits alone keep the order this crate had, character for character; a test checks that against a separate implementation of the old rule rather than against itself.
  • One existing test went red, correctly. SUMIFS with a >=😀… criterion did not match a zzz cell and now does, because an emoji is a nonalphanumeric character. Its expectation is updated with the reason rather than quietly made green.
  • Equality never moves: coop and co-op are still different text, and text_eq still decides. The doc line saying two ASCII strings compare by their lowercase bytes is corrected.
  • The ASCII fast path is kept: it reads the same three levels straight off the bytes instead of building keys.

Gates

Scoped to the crates touched: cargo fmt, cargo clippy -D warnings on core, engine and functions, and 1037 tests across core, engine, functions, calc, xlsx and model, 0 failures.

Not run: wasm, the desktop apps, and the rest of the workspace. I would rather name the gates I did not execute than imply the branch is clean on them.

It does not merge cleanly today

GitHub reports a conflict against main, and I would rather say so here than let a reviewer find it. The branch sits on #2036, which was last rebased onto a1c84547, and main has moved since. Say the word and I will rebase both, or rebase #2036 alone and restack this on it — whichever order suits you. I did not rebase pre-emptively because main moves fast enough that the branch would conflict again before anyone looked at it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Text comparisons now treat supported accented characters as equivalent to their unaccented forms for matching and sorting, and recognize canonically equivalent Unicode spellings across many spreadsheet operations.
    • Text sorting now uses consistent rules for character classes, accents, and punctuation.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved consistency in text matching across filters, lookups, pivots, criteria, and duplicate handling.
    • Some wildcard and Find/Replace comparisons still do not match canonically equivalent spellings.

compare_text now orders text by base letter first (Anh < Ánh < bàn, not
after z), then by accents, and treats NFC and NFD, and any order of marks
of different combining classes, as equal. Adds fold_key, text_eq and
canonical. Two ASCII strings still compare by lowercase bytes.

The canonical decomposition and combining-class tables (Latin letters,
U+0300..U+036F) are Unicode License v3 data, checked against icu_normalizer
(dev-dependency only) by a test.

…at NFC and NFD as equal

Engine commands now group, deduplicate and match cell text through the core
text equality instead of their own to_lowercase/eq_ignore_ascii_case:

- AutoFilter: the value list groups text by fold_key (one entry for "Abc",
"abc" and an NFD spelling, showing the first one met) and orders it with
compare_text; value, custom "="/"<>" and list selections use text_eq.
- Custom filter and conditional-format contains/begins/ends rules use the new
  core contains_folded / starts_with_folded / ends_with_folded, which match
whole letters only ("e" is not found in "Nguyễn").
- Remove Duplicates, CF duplicate/unique counts, Advanced Filter unique and
labels, Consolidate labels: keyed by fold_key.
- Validation lists, custom-list sort keys and autofill lists: text_eq.
- Pivot: text items are keyed by fold_key and ordered by compare_text;
collapsed items and page-filter selections match with text_eq.
- Slicer: tiles dedupe by fold_key; tile selections match with text_eq.

The user's text is never rewritten; a test pins that the number of combining
marks in the sheet is unchanged by Sort, Remove Duplicates and AutoFilter.

…vot items use the same equality

- core: public opaque `TextKey` / `text_key(s)` whose order equals
`compare_text` exactly (tested on random ASCII, mixed and re-encoded pairs),
and `*_prefolded` search variants that take an already-folded needle.
- AutoFilter value lists and pivot items sort on keys built once per entry
instead of rebuilding two keys per comparison (10 000 names: 182 ms -> 12 ms).
- Custom AutoFilter and conditional-format text rules fold their criterion
  once, not per cell.
- XLSX pivot writer: shared-item identity is `fold_key` and item/name matching
is `text_eq`, so NFC and NFD spellings are one cache item and hidden or
collapsed flags named in another encoding survive a save.

- ROADMAP.md progress log, docs/localization-parity.md (scope, limits),
  docs/function-parity.md (lookups, criteria, UNIQUE, EXACT), docs/gaps.md (#11):
status lines and revision histories bumped.
- collate.rs: Root order doc states Anh < Ánh < Ảnh and that letters without a
decomposition sort after z; comments no longer call the Root order "layer 1".

… canonical case tie-break, pivot header dedupe

- core: `text_eq_prefolded(s, folded)` compares a text with an already folded one
while folding it char by char (no allocation unless the text holds a separately
typed mark U+0300..=U+036F, which takes the full `fold_key`); `TextSet` folds
each chosen value once and each probe once. Doc lines wrapped.
- AutoFilter value lists, the filter menu (`filter_values`), Slicer tiles and the
all-selected check, PivotTable page filters and the XLSX writer's hidden items
test cells against a `TextSet` instead of every row against every value
  (2 000 names, one unchecked: 3.7 s -> 1.9 ms per apply, release).
- MATCH/VLOOKUP/HLOOKUP/XLOOKUP/XMATCH exact scans fold the needle once;
COUNTIF-style plain criteria fold the criterion at parse time.
- Data > Sort: a custom list is folded once into a map and each cell ranked once;
custom AutoFilter criteria compute only what the operator needs (`=`/`<>` use
the folded criterion, only `<`/`>` build sort keys).
- Case-sensitive sort tie-break compares canonical (decomposed) text, so `Ánh`
sorts before `ÁNH` whichever is NFC.
- XLSX pivot cache: field names deduplicated like the engine's source headers and
resolved by that exact name before canonical equality, so a PivotTable over the
NFD twin of an NFC header saves and reopens on its own column.
- localization-parity: Root breaks accent-only ties by mark code point (hà < há),
unlike ICU root; XLSX pivot field resolution.

…fixes)

pivot.collapse tested every label against every collapsed item with text_eq
(O(n*m), two folds per non-ASCII comparison); with no `items` it could pass
100 000 labels. It now holds the collapsed items in a TextSet (one fold per
label, first spelling kept, order kept) and expands through a TextSet of the
named items. The pivot engine folds each field's collapsed items once per
compute (collapsed_sets) instead of comparing each record/node label with
each item. Same relation as text_eq; TextSet gains insert().

Tests: collapse without items is set based and spelling blind; first spelling
kept and order of additions; column-field collapse in another spelling; 20 000
distinct non-ASCII labels collapse and expand; TextSet::insert.

Four marks of U+0300..=U+036F have a canonical decomposition of their
own: U+0340 -> U+0300, U+0341 -> U+0301 (the grave and acute tone
marks), U+0343 -> U+0313 and U+0344 -> U+0308 U+0301. The table held
only the Latin letters, so `a` + U+0341 was not `á` in text_eq,
compare_text, TextSet, pivot items or Remove Duplicates.

The four entries go between U+0233 and U+1E00 (the binary search stays
sorted); decomposition runs before mark reordering and classification,
so the marks they give are ordered with their neighbours. The ICU
oracle test now checks the NFD of every scalar of U+0300..=U+036F and
of these marks next to marks of other classes; targeted tests cover
text_eq, compare_text, text_key, text_eq_prefolded and TextSet, and an
engine test merges the spellings in a PivotTable and Remove Duplicates.

storytold#2036's review retained a concern about this; it is real, and I owe the
review a measurement rather than an opinion.

For a needle of ordinary letters the old loop is linear, and the reason is
worth writing down: a rejected occurrence at `i` has a combining mark at
`i + needle.len()`, so the next occurrence cannot start before
`i + needle.len() + 1` — its window would contain that mark. Rejections are
therefore a needle apart, which caps them at `haystack / needle`, and the
scanning between them telescopes.

That argument assumes the needle holds no marks. It does not have to. With
a needle that is a run of combining marks inside a longer run of the same
mark, **every** position is an occurrence, every one is followed by a mark
and so rejected, and each restart of `str::find` pays for the needle again.
Counted directly, the old loop grows ×4 per doubling: 0.3 M byte
comparisons at 1,000 marks, 1.0 M at 2,000, 4.0 M at 4,000, 16.0 M at
8,000. At Excel's 32,767-character limit that is ~537 M for a single cell,
so a COUNTIF or a filter down a column of them stops responding. The text
is dull to produce, which is the part I did not like.

Replaced with one left-to-right Knuth–Morris–Pratt pass: the failure
function is built once per needle, a rejected occurrence continues from the
longest proper prefix — so overlapping occurrences are still tried, and a
rejected one still never hides a later match — and the work is
`O(haystack + needle)` for every input. Matching bytes is matching
characters here, because a UTF-8 sequence occurs inside another only at a
character boundary.

Semantics are unchanged: the new implementation was checked against the old
one on 400,000 random haystack/needle pairs drawn from `a b e n` plus four
combining marks (haystacks to 9 characters, needles to 4, so the empty
needle, a needle longer than the haystack, a needle of marks only and
overlapping occurrences all come up) — identical on every pair.

The regression test budgets **steps, not seconds**: a wall-clock limit goes
red on a slow machine and green on a fast one for the same algorithm. A
test-only counter, the same device the file already uses for `fold_key`,
makes the bound machine-independent. Pasting the old loop back makes it
read 200,020,000 steps against a 240,000 budget — 833× over — so the test
is known to fail without the fix, not merely to pass with it.

Gates, scoped to the crates touched: fmt, clippy -D warnings on core,
engine and functions; 761 tests across core, engine, functions and calc,
0 failures.

Closes storytold#890.

The report's fixture matches Excel on 4 of 19 rows, and the gap is not the
Vietnamese tailoring: it is that `Collation::Root` ordered characters by
code point while Excel calls `CompareStringW` without `SORT_STRINGSORT` —
Windows **word sort** — which [the
documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/intl/handling-sorting-in-your-applications)
gives two rules for that code point order does not have:

1. "all punctuation marks and other nonalphanumeric characters, except for
the hyphen and the apostrophe, come before any alphanumeric character".
That is why `_x` sorts first, ahead of `1`.
2. The hyphen and the apostrophe are the exception: out of the first level,
used only to break ties, "to ensure that words such as 'coop' and
'co-op' stay together in a sorted list".

The space is **not** an exception, so it stays a nonalphanumeric and sorts
before letters — which is why Excel puts `a c` before `ab`.

Three levels, then: classed characters (nonalphanumeric < digit < letter)
with the hyphen and apostrophe skipped, then the diacritics already there,
then where those two characters stood. No case level is needed — case is
already ignored, and a stable sort keeps `apfel` before `Apfel`.

**Anchored on Microsoft's own example**, not on the report: the test that
pins this sorts the "Word Sort" column of the documentation above
(`billet | bills | bill's | cannot | cant | can't | con | coop | co-op`), a
source Microsoft controls. The fixture of storytold#890 is a second test, and it
passes 19/19; it comes from a bug report, so it corroborates rather than
decides. I would rather say which evidence carries the claim.

**What this changes, exactly.** Seventeen ASCII characters move from after
the digits to before them (`: ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~`), and so
does anything else that is neither letter nor digit. Words of letters and
digits alone keep the order this crate had, character for character, and a
test compares that against a separate implementation of the old rule rather
than against itself. The first version of that test counted moved
*indices* and reported the whole alphabet, because punctuation moving ahead
shifts every later index; it now counts flipped **pairs**.

**One existing test went red, correctly**: `SUMIFS` with a `>=😀…`
criterion did not match a `zzz` cell and now does, because an emoji is a
nonalphanumeric character. That is a real behaviour change, so its
expectation is updated with the reason rather than quietly made green.

Equality never moves: `coop` and `co-op` are still different text, and
`text_eq` still decides. The ASCII fast path is kept — it reads the same
three levels straight off the bytes instead of building keys.

Walkthrough

The PR adds shared Unicode-aware collation for specified Latin characters and combining marks. It applies the comparison utilities across core comparisons, worksheet functions, engine sorting and filtering, pivots, slicers, and XLSX pivot handling. Tests and documentation describe the supported scope and limitations.

Changes: Unicode text collation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Core collation primitives and comparison contract
crates/core/src/collate.rs, crates/core/src/lib.rs, crates/core/src/value.rs, Cargo.toml, crates/core/Cargo.toml, ATTRIBUTION.md, ROADMAP.md, docs/*
The core adds canonical decomposition, folding, equality, ordering, and folded search utilities, then exposes them through the crate API. The previous comparator delegates to the new implementation. Tests and documentation specify the data source, character scope, behavior, and remaining limitations.

Sorting, filters, conditional formatting, duplicate handling, validation, autofill, and consolidation use the shared text utilities. Tests cover matching, ordering, and preservation of stored text.
Pivot and slicer identity and selection
crates/engine/src/cmd/pivot.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/slicer.rs, crates/engine/src/pivot.rs, crates/xlsx/src/pivot.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_collation.rs
Pivot and slicer labels and selections use folded text identity. XLSX pivot handling applies the same identity rules and prefers ASCII-case-insensitive header matches. Tests cover pivot behavior and XLSX round trips.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1628b

The change is mergeable with owner awareness, but sorting very long ASCII labels can disagree between workbook operations, and large sorts or pivot saves may do avoidable work. Fix these localized issues or explicitly accept them.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1628b

Long workbook labels can violate the new shared ordering contract. The inspected command paths retain permission checks and rollback protection, and no expansion into privileged operations was identified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new shared comparator is not a total order for sufficiently long mixed ASCII and Unicode inputs. Let p contain 16,384 copies of “a”, A be p followed by “:”, B be p followed by “0”, and C be p followed by “1é”. The ASCII path gives A < B, while capped Root comparisons give B < C and C < A. TextKey also reverses the ASCII ordering of A and B. Workbook-controlled labels therefore violate ordering preconditions in shared sorting consumers, potentially producing incorrect ordering or a contained command failure. Panic handling and snapshot restoration limit the evidenced consequence; an escaping crash or rollback failure is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced attackable input is workbook text, and the demonstrated reach is workbook comparison, sorting, filtering, pivot identity, and saved pivot representation. The inspected consumers do not establish tenant selection, credential use, or privileged external-resource access through these helpers.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Crafted long labels can reach a comparator that violates sorting preconditions through Value comparison and data.sort. Incorrect ordering is supported statically; a sort panic is possible but was not reproduced. The inspected command boundary contains unwinding panics, so a service-wide denial of service is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Canonical equivalence merges pivot item identities, not source-column ownership. Focused round-trip tests cover equivalent labels while retaining distinct source columns whose headers differ only in canonical encoding.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Repeated collapse operations deduplicate canonically equivalent selections, and recomputation derives fresh membership sets from persisted labels. Result-based failures are protected by transactional publication. Dedicated interruption tests were not evidenced, although the command boundary includes panic restoration.

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in #890. crates/core/src/collate.rs adds Root ordering with nonalphanumeric characters before digits and letters, and it uses separate hyphen/apostrophe tie-break levels. The implementation retains case-insensitive comparison, accent-aware ordering, and the ASCII fast path. The reported tests cover the Microsoft Word Sort example, the 19-row fixture, old letters-and-digits ordering, emoji and symbol behavior, equality separation, and the updated SUMIFS expectation. Existing engine sorting uses TextKey, which supports SORT/SORTBY and related sort paths. The summary also reports sorting coverage in tests_collation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-pull-request diff includes broad canonical text-comparison changes that are not connected to #890's sorting requirements. Examples include conditional formatting, database functions, lookup functions, criteria handling, SWITCH and EXACT, slicers, pivots, autofill, consolidation, and unrelated filter behavior in crates/engine and crates/functions. These changes may belong to the stacked #2036 work, but the reviewed diff includes them and the linked issue does not require them. The roadmap and parity-document edits also describe that broader work rather than only the #890 sorting fix.

Resolution

Merge or separately review the stacked #2036 changes, then restack this pull request so its diff contains the #890 word-sort implementation and its required tests. Remove unrelated function, engine, documentation, and dependency changes from this pull request unless a linked issue establishes their scope.

Minor · Build the collapsed-item set once per field. · pivot.rs:949

crates/xlsx/src/pivot.rs:949
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Build the collapsed-item set once per field.

Line 949 compares each item label with every collapsed item: collapsed.iter().any(|cl| same(cl, l)). same calls gridcraft_core::text_eq. For non-ASCII text, text_eq calls fold_key on both strings on every comparison, and fold_key allocates a new String. With N labels and M collapsed items, one save can perform up to N × M of these folds for a field. A TextSet folds each collapsed item once and folds each label once, so the lookup cost becomes roughly N + M. The match relation stays the same, because TextSet::contains compares fold_key values, which is the relation text_eq uses. The engine already builds these sets in collapsed_sets and in pivot.collapse, but this XLSX writer does not.

Apply the primary cap consistently to the ASCII path.

For p = "a".repeat(16_384), compare_text(&(p + "~"), &(p + "a")) ranks the punctuation suffix first, but text_key(&(p + "~")).cmp(&text_key(&(p + "a"))) reaches Root::text after the capped primary keys and ranks the letter suffix first. This violates the documented TextKey/compare_text ordering contract and can reorder long ASCII labels in the pivot field list.

Cap the ASCII primary sequence and tie-punctuation positions at the same MAX_PRIMARY boundary as Root::new. This fixes the ordering contract; avoiding ASCII Vec allocations is a separate optimization.

Remove the per-comparison rank-vector allocations from the ASCII fast path.

ascii_word_sort materializes two temporary Vec<u32> values for each ASCII comparison. Non-empty inputs also allocate backing storage. Ordinary sorting and exact text lookup comparisons can call this path repeatedly, which adds avoidable allocation and copying work. The function documentation states that the ASCII path builds no keys.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the head of the diff: root order uses a Windows word sort, so punctuation and the hyphen sort as Excel does. ATTRIBUTION.md carries the same note as gridcraft#2036 about collate.rs containing Unicode Character Database 17.0 data, and the lock gains the ICU4X-related packages, so this branch contains the earlier collation PR and should be stacked on it. Excel on Windows uses the "word sort" in which the hyphen and apostrophe are ignored at the first level, which is observable and is the oracle (a table of strings in Excel's order is the proof). Sorting must be stable and deterministic across platforms, which a data-driven collation gives. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
