Fixes #1825.

When the selection is one column wide (part of a column, or the whole column) and that column sits inside a wider block of data, Sort A to Z, Sort Z to A and Custom Sort sorted that column alone. The neighbouring columns stayed where they were, so the rows got mixed up. A single selected cell was already fine, because it sorts the current region.

Now a one-column selection with no explicit range grows to its current region before the sort, the same as choosing Excel's "Expand the selection". The sort key is still the selected column. It stays as it was when:

  • an explicit range is passed (programmatic calls sort exactly what they ask for),
  • the selection is inside a table (the table path already sorts the table's data),
  • the region does not hold the whole selection, or has no other columns,
  • Custom Sort runs by columns (left to right).

The issue asks for Excel's Sort Warning dialog. This PR does not add that dialog. It takes Excel's default answer, "Expand the selection", so the data can no longer be scrambled by accident. If you want the dialog too (with "Continue with the current selection"), it can go on top of this as a follow-up.

Test: sorting_a_selected_column_expands_to_the_adjacent_data runs Sort Z to A and Custom Sort on B2:B4 and on B:B next to a name column, and checks that each name stays with its score. It fails on main.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Sorting a selected column now includes the surrounding data region when appropriate, keeping related values in the same rows. This applies to quick and custom row-oriented sorts when an implicit, single-column selection is contained within a wider region.
    • Numeric column-key offsets for custom sorts are now based on the originally selected range, even when the sort includes the wider region.
    • Explicit range sorts, multi-column or single-cell selections, selections within tables, and column-oriented sorts continue to use the selected range.

📝 Walkthrough

Eligible implicit single-column selections now expand to the containing current region for row-oriented sorts. Quick sorts retain the selected column as the default sort column. Tests cover bounded and whole-column selections and verify that adjacent column values remain aligned.

Changes: Sort range expansion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expand sort ranges and verify alignment
crates/engine/src/cmd/data.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Eligible implicit one-column selections expand to a wider current region that contains the selection. Explicit ranges, single-cell selections, multi-column selections, and selections inside tables remain unchanged. Quick sorts and row-oriented data.sort use the expanded range; column-oriented sorts do not. Sort-key defaults and numeric offsets use the originally selected range. Tests cover bounded and whole-column selections, descending sorts, and letter and numeric-offset keys.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/data.rs: Added expand_sort_range: explicit ranges, multi-column or single-cell selections, and selections inside tables remain unchanged. Otherwise, a one-column selection expands to the current region only when that region is wider and contains the selection.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/data.rs: quick_sort now sorts the expanded range but defaults its column from the original picked range. Row-oriented sort also expands its range; column-oriented sorting retains the picked range. Header guessing uses the range actually being sorted.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/data.rs: Numeric data.sort column offsets now use the originally picked range’s start column instead of the expanded sort range’s start column.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/tests.rs: Added sorting_a_selected_column_expands_to_the_adjacent_data, which checks that quick and custom descending sorts of B2:B4 or B:B reorder adjacent column A with column B. It exercises letter and numeric-offset sort keys and verifies the resulting rows.

Explanation

The changes in crates/engine/src/cmd/data.rs and crates/engine/src/tests.rs address issue #1825. Range expansion prevents row misalignment. Numeric key handling and the regression tests support correct sorting behavior. No unrelated change is shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1825 requires sorting the adjacent data with the selected column and requests a Sort Warning with “Expand the selection” and “Continue with the current selection”. The PR expands eligible implicit one-column selections, preserves the selected column as the sort key, and adds regression coverage. The PR does not add the requested warning or the second sorting choice.

Resolution

Add the Sort Warning for affected implicit one-column selections. Apply either the expanded range or the selected range according to the user's choice. Add automated tests for both choices.

Use distinct sort orders in the fixture.

Names b, c, a and scores 2, 3, 1 both sort descending as c, b, a. The test can therefore pass if the expanded selection sorts by adjacent column A instead of selected column B. Use different rankings and update the name assertions.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the selected column as the base for numeric sort keys.

If B2:B4 expands to A1:B4, column: 0 now resolves to A instead of B. This affects both quick sorts and row-oriented data.sort. A caller using numeric offset zero can therefore sort the complete rows by the wrong column. Resolve numeric keys against the original selection before using the expanded range as the sort body.

Initialize Custom Sort from the active column.

Dialog::open initializes the first sort level to column A, so a selection in column B opens Custom Sort with the wrong key. Use the active selection column for the initial level.

Resolved against storytold#1844: a quick sort and Sort take the AutoFilter's range when
started from its arrow (storytold#1122), then widen a one-column selection to its region
(storytold#1844); the header is sort_header's (storytold#1122).

storytold#1422 and storytold#1175 each add the same filtered_rows to cmd/edit.rs; one is kept.
Three tests that the merges of storytold#1175, storytold#1844 and storytold#1525 appended after the same
last test in engine/src/tests.rs are closed and given their #[test] again.

Not merged: storytold#1340 (recalculation rewritten to bound the stack: the most delicate
change and a 1,000-level chain to need it) and storytold#761 (winit patched to an
unreleased upstream commit).

Thanks! One bug to fix first (CodeRabbit flagged it too): numeric column offsets now resolve against the expanded range, so column: 0 on B2:B4 sorts by column A. The test also can't tell which column was the sort key. Note that #1122 replaces the same data_range call in quick_sort and sort, so the two need coordinating.

Thanks @echelon, fixed in b44b51e. Numeric column offsets now count from the range you selected, not the expanded one, so column: 0 on B2:B4 sorts by B; the expanded range is only the block that gets sorted. The test now uses data where sorting by Name and by Score give different row orders, so it fails if the wrong column is the key, and it covers letter and numeric keys for both quick sort and data.sort. On #1122: the data_range call is untouched, so whichever lands second only swaps it for sort_range(s, p)? on the let picked = ... line in quick_sort and sort. Happy to rebase onto #1122 if it merges first.

Thanks for the update and the numeric-offset fix. A few things before this can go in:

  1. crates/engine/src/cmd/data.rs, expand_sort_range: when the region around the first cell doesn't hold the whole selection, the region.contains_range(&r) guard falls back to a one-column sort with no warning. The description lists this case, but two everyday selections hit it and still scramble rows:

    • B:B over A1:B10 when row 6 is empty (region A1:B5, selection B1:B10);
    • B1:B30 when something further down, e.g. E20, extends the used range.

As far as I know Excel shows the Sort Warning in both. Could you expand whenever the region overlaps the selection and is wider than it, or refuse/warn instead of sorting one column next to data? Please add both cases to the test.

  2. Main now has sort_target (Sort: a Sheet! prefix on the range sorts that sheet, not the active one #1284), hence the conflict. As iluebbe noted on Sorting not working correctly #1825, take (sheet, picked) from it; please also pass sheet into expand_sort_range rather than reading d.wb.active().

  3. expand_sort_range only checks whether the active cell is in a table. With a plain column next to a table, the expanded region takes in the table and sorts its rows from outside. I'd skip expansion when the region intersects a table the selection isn't in.

  4. Tests: please add a partial selection (B3:B4 expanding to the whole region), an explicit range staying unexpanded, and orientation: "columns" staying unexpanded, so the scope rules in the description are pinned down.

Whether expand-only is enough without the Sort Warning dialog that #1825 asks for is the maintainers' call.

Expanding a single-column selection to its current data region keeps each row's neighboring values together during sorting. If you would rather not, I can open a PR that credits you, keeps your commits and shows a git range-diff against this one, so you'll still get credit and have visible work.
