The other half of #1489. The German info types are #1502; this is CELL("filename") itself, which returned an empty string for every workbook, saved or not.

The bug

=CELL("filename",A1)                                          ->  ""
=MID(CELL("filename",A1),FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1))+1,31)  ->  #VALUE!
=ISNUMBER(FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1)))                      ->  FALSE

That middle formula is the classic way to put a sheet's name in a cell, and @KNUFFIXX measured it in 83 of 400 real German workbooks. With no ] in the string, FIND fails and the cell shows #VALUE!.

Excel returns <folder>\[<file>]<sheet>, and empty only for a workbook that has never been saved.

Why it was empty

The workbook model had no file to report. source_dir exists, but it is there for a different job: it names the folder that relative links to other workbooks are relative to. It must not be updated on a Save As into another folder, because the links held in memory are still written for the old one — only the saved copy is rebased. So it could not be reused here, and overwriting it would have broken linked workbooks on the second save.

Workbook::source_path is therefore its own field, with that distinction written down where someone will meet it. It is set in two places:

  • open — from the path, made absolute, so the folder is the one the user sees. A workbook that arrived as bytes knows its name but never a folder, so it reports [name]Sheet with none, which still splits on the ]. An import reports the file it came from, as Excel does, even though Save must still ask where to put the .xlsx.
  • save — when a full-fidelity save makes a file the document's own. Set before the saved snapshot, or the workbook would read as dirty the moment it was saved, and only when it actually changes, so an ordinary Save does not clone the workbook for nothing.

CELL("filename") then builds the string with Path::join, so the separator is the platform's. The sheet is the one the reference is on, not the active one.

One thing deliberately not changed

CELL is volatile and already in the volatile sets, so a cell holding it answers from the next recalculation. After a Save As that means F9, not the save itself — the test asserts exactly that rather than papering over it. Making a save recalculate the workbook is a bigger decision than this issue, and it belongs to whoever wants to take it.

For the same reason check still skips CELL("filename") as volatile, as docs/cli.md says: the cached value in the file is the folder on the machine that saved it. So this does not move the corpus mismatch count; #1502 is the half that does.

Tests

  • cell_filename_names_the_workbook_file (calc) — empty with no file; the full <folder>/[<file>]<sheet>; both reported formulas; the sheet is the referenced one, through a second sheet; and the bytes case with no folder. It fails on main with left: Text("").
  • cell_filename_follows_the_file_the_workbook_lives_in (engine, native) — the whole path through real files in a temp dir: new workbook empty and the formula #VALUE!, Save As then naming the file and the formula giving the sheet name, a fresh session opening that path and agreeing, a Save As into another folder following the new file, the workbook not reading as dirty after either save, and an open from bytes.

Gates

cargo xtask ci green: all 8 steps (fmt, clippy with -D warnings, test — 92 result lines, 0 failures, both tests among them — assets, layers, wasm, parity, keytips).

On landing order

Cut from main, not from #1502, since they are separate halves and this one touches the model and the engine as well. They change different lines of cell_info, so only the append point in crates/calc/src/tests.rs overlaps; whichever lands second needs that one trivial rebase. With both in, ZELLE("Dateiname";A1) reaches this arm and the German sheet-name formula works, which is what #1489 asked for.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CELL("filename", reference) now reports the workbook’s folder and filename, along with the referenced sheet name, when a file path is available. It returns an empty string for unsaved workbooks.
    • Opening a workbook from a file or supplied bytes sets the filename information used by the formula. Saving as XLSX or JSON updates that information when the destination path changes, so the reported location reflects the workbook’s current file.

Checked this branch (f79bb98, Linux x86_64 build of gridcraft-cli) with gc_cell_info_de.xlsx from #1489:

Cell Formula Excel main @ 82ee02a This branch
B8 MID(CELL("filename",A1),FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1))+1,31) Info #VALUE! Info fixed
B7 (control) CELL("address",A1) $A$1 $A$1 $A$1 still correct
B1–B6 German info types ("adresse", "zeile", "spalte", "inhalt", "dateiname") $A$1, 3, 3, 1234.5, TRUE, Info #VALUE! (B5 FALSE) #VALUE! (B5 FALSE) not part of this PR

The other checks from our reports (#64, #410, #417, #805, #864, #889, #890, #985, #1488, #1490, #1491) are unchanged.

Build: cargo build --release -p gridcraft-cli with rustc 1.97.0 on Linux x86_64 (gridcraft-cli 0.7.0); fixtures: KNUFFIXX/artcraft-fixtures @ 2a358e1.

Thank you — and thank you for reading the scope right. B1–B6 staying #VALUE! here is correct: the German info types are #1502, and this PR deliberately only makes CELL("filename") answer. With both in, CELL("dateiname") reaches this arm and B5/B6 come out TRUE and Info as well.

B8 going from #VALUE! to Info is the whole of what this one claims, and B7 holding $A$1 is the control that says the alias dispatch was not disturbed on the way.

One thing your table makes concrete that is worth recording: Excel's cached value for B8 is Info, and it matches here because the formula only reads the sheet name out of the string, after the ]. The folder before it is the folder of the machine that saved the file, so check still skips CELL("filename") as volatile and will keep doing so — a direct comparison of the whole string could never match. That is why this PR moves no corpus mismatch count, as #1502 does.

📝 Walkthrough

The workbook now tracks a non-serialized source path. Opening and saving update that path, and CELL("filename") uses it with the referenced sheet name. Without a source path, the function returns an empty string.

Changes: Workbook filename reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workbook source path
crates/model/src/workbook.rs, crates/engine/src/io.rs
Workbook gains a non-serialized source_path field, initialized to None. The engine adds a helper that resolves a supplied path to an absolute path.
Open and save path updates
crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs
Opening records the supplied path or workbook name. XLSX and JSON saves update source_path to the destination before creating the saved snapshot.
CELL filename result
crates/calc/src/eval.rs, crates/calc/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
CELL("filename") returns the workbook path and referenced sheet name when a source path exists, and an empty string otherwise. Tests cover path formats, opening, saving, recalculation, and saved workbook state.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to aff91

CELL("filename") reports a folder for workbooks opened from bytes when the supplied name contains a path separator. The impact is small and limited to that edge case, so the change can merge with this noted as a follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to aff91

The change is contained to workbook file identity and formula output; formulas gain no filesystem access. However, undo after Save As can make the reported filename disagree with the actual save destination.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Reported file identity is restored with content history rather than remaining aligned with document ownership. Open file A, make an undoable edit, save as B, then undo: the restored Workbook can contain source_path A while DocState.path remains B. Subsequent filename evaluation can therefore report A although ordinary Save still targets B. Save As correctly updates current identity, but does not update or isolate historical identity.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A workbook formula can now expose that workbook's supplied or resolved file location to readers of calculated cells and ordinary exports. This is the intended filename contract; the inspected path does not establish access to unrelated files, other workbooks' locations, or additional privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The filename evaluator reads stored workbook metadata and constructs text; it performs no filesystem operation. Path normalization remains in engine I/O, and imported or decrypted workbooks retain the existing requirement to choose a save destination rather than automatically replacing their source.

Keep folders out of names supplied with bytes.

If file.open receives {"name":"uploads/book.xlsx","base64":...}, this assignment keeps uploads in source_path. CELL("filename") then returns uploads/[book.xlsx]Sheet1, although no file was opened from that folder. Store the name’s final path component for the byte-open branch. Use Path::file_name so the host path rules remain intact.

Rebased onto current main (it was 13 commits behind) and the conflict in crates/calc/src/tests.rs, where main had added median_large_values_recalculate_dependents next to this test resolved by keeping both tests — nothing of this change or of main's was dropped. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on the rebase, and the calc suite is green (61 tests), so this is mergeable again.

It returned an empty string for every workbook, saved or not, so the classic
sheet-name formula `MID(CELL("filename",A1),FIND("]",…)+1,31)` gave #VALUE!:
with no `]` in the string there is nothing for FIND to find. Excel returns
`<folder>\[<file>]<sheet>`, and empty only before the first save.

The model had no file to report. `source_dir` could not serve: it names the
folder relative links to other workbooks are relative to, and must keep naming
it after a Save As into another folder, because the links held in memory are
still written for the old one — only the saved copy is rebased. `source_path`
is therefore its own field, with that distinction written down.

It is set when a workbook is opened, from the path made absolute so the folder
is the one the user sees, and when a full-fidelity save makes a file the
document's own — before the `saved` snapshot, or the workbook would read as
dirty the moment it was saved, and only when it changes, so an ordinary Save
does not clone the workbook for nothing. A workbook that arrived as bytes knows
its name but never a folder and reports `[name]Sheet`, which still splits on the
`]`; an import reports the file it came from, as Excel does. The sheet is the one
the reference is on, not the active one.

CELL is volatile and already in the volatile sets, so a cell holding it answers
from the next recalculation; after a Save As that means F9 rather than the save
itself, which the engine test asserts rather than papers over. Making a save
recalculate is a larger decision than this issue.

`check` still skips CELL("filename") as volatile, as docs/cli.md says: the
cached value in a file is the folder of the machine that saved it.

Rebased again onto current main — the merges of the last hour moved it on 59 commits and the conflict came back in crates/engine/src/tests.rs, where main's csv_as_text_keeps_identifier_columns_as_written sits where this change's test does. Both are kept, and both pass.

One thing worth flagging while gating it: cargo xtask ci cannot pass on macOS on main itself at the moment — clippy rejects let mut link = Link::default() in crates/ui-egui/src/desktop_theme.rs, because Link is () off Linux and the gate runs with -D warnings. #1981 fixes that. With it applied on top of this branch, all 8 steps pass; the branch as pushed is this change alone.

Strip folders from the name supplied with bytes.

In the byte-open branch, name is caller-supplied. If file.open receives {"name":"uploads/book.xlsx","base64":...}, source_path keeps uploads/. CELL("filename") then returns uploads/[book.xlsx]Sheet1. No file was opened from that folder. Store only the final path component. Use Path::file_name so the host path rules stay intact. This matches the retained learning on filename extraction.

Confirm that this direct mutation path keeps recalculation and history semantics.

save mutates d.wb.source_path directly and does not use the staged edit/commit path. The guideline requires direct-mutation commands to preserve recalculation and history semantics explicitly. The comment explains the dirty-flag ordering. It does not state that no history entry is wanted. It also does not state that volatile CELL("filename") cells recalculate only on the next recalculation. The test does cover the second point. Add a short comment that states both decisions.
