Summary

  • Data ▸ Get Data ▸ From Web (data.fromWeb): enter an https URL, GridCraft fetches the page, auto-detects its HTML tables (Excel's "Suggested Tables") and loads the selected one into a new table sheet, saving the connection in the workbook.
  • Navigator dialog: From Web on the Data tab opens a dialog with the URL field, the detected tables listed on the left, a preview grid on the right, and a Load button — mirroring Excel's From Web Navigator (data.webPreview powers the detection/preview).
  • One-click Sync (data.webRefresh): re-fetches the page and rewrites the imported table in place (rows resize, formulas/formatting elsewhere in the workbook are untouched), recording a last_synced timestamp on the saved connection. data.queriesConnections lists it with the other tables.
  • Architecture follows Data: From Database (PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, SQLite, ODBC) #1430 (From Database): the engine stays network-free and wasm-clean — a new native-only gridcraft-webquery crate (ureq, rustls, no redirect following, https-only, size/time capped) is injected by the desktop app and CLI as Session::web_source; table extraction (pure HTML parsing) lives engine-side with tests for ragged rows, entities, nested tables, scripts and caps.

Verification

  • cargo test -p gridcraft-engine (299+ tests, 13 new for web import/preview/refresh), cargo test --workspace green; cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets, cargo fmt --check, cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask wasm, cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask parity all pass.
  • End-to-end against a live page: gridcraft-cli run --cmd 'data.fromWeb={"url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)","table":"mwcA","maxRows":15}' imports the IMF GDP table (4 cols × 15 rows) into a new sheet; data.queriesConnections lists it; error paths (non-https URL, 404, missing table) return clean messages.

Notes / follow-ups

  • Saved connections persist in the JSON workbook model (like custom_lists); writing them into xl/connections.xml for XLSX round-trips is a follow-up, as is refresh-on-open.
  • Known follow-up: dialog preview fetches synchronously on the UI thread (fine for typical pages under the 30 s / 16 MB caps; a background fetch can come later).

Closes #1356

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Import tables from HTTPS webpages on desktop and CLI. Preview detected tables, select one, and load it into a new sheet.
    • View saved web connections, including their source, last-sync time, and destination sheet.
    • Refresh individual connections or all connections; refreshed data updates the imported table in place.
    • Open web import and connection tools from the Data ribbon or keyboard shortcut.
  • Safety and Reliability
    • Refreshes avoid overwriting sheet content when updates are empty, oversized, or conflict with existing data. Imported text that could be interpreted as a formula remains text.

…sh (storytold#1356)

data.fromWeb fetches an https page through the host's web source (new
gridcraft-webquery crate, ureq, native only), extracts the page's tables
(engine-side HTML parsing, wasm-clean) and loads the selected one into a
new table sheet, saving the connection; data.webPreview lists the page's
tables with a preview (the Navigator dialog), and data.webRefresh
re-fetches and rewrites a saved table in place.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 873de

Sync can remove columns a user added to an imported table, which conflicts with the goal of keeping workbook formulas intact. Overlapping fetches can lose a preview or refresh result, imported cell text can run words together, and redirects are reported misleadingly. These are bounded issues, but the Sync column loss should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 873de

Web import adds network access and repeatable updates to workbook data. Explicit actions, credential restrictions, formula escaping, destination checks, and rollback boundaries limit the demonstrated exposure. No unauthorized access path was established, but internal-network destination behavior and some recovery cases remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added network authority belongs to the initiating desktop or CLI process and its network environment. Command callers and saved workbook URLs influence destinations; downloaded pages influence imported table data. The inspected paths require explicit UI actions or command execution, not merely opening a workbook.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Saved refresh URLs are revalidated, and the native provider independently rejects non-HTTPS URLs and embedded userinfo. Requests disable redirects, set a 30-second global timeout, and cap body reads. No application-level hostname allowlist or resolved-address filtering is configured in this transport block; actual DNS, proxy, and private-destination behavior remains unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failure containment is per connection: one refresh can fail while other connections succeed. Each rewrite has its own rollback boundary, and asynchronous completion rejects a different active document. This prevents a failed batch from implying that every connection was rolled back.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the intended destination policy before reusing this provider in a shared service or less-trusted automation environment. If that environment requires public-only fetching, enforce policy against resolved destinations and make proxy behavior explicit rather than treating HTTPS and disabled redirects as network-isolation controls.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a From Web import that loads a table from a web page, plus one-click refresh. The raw summary confirms this. Changes include the webquery crate, the data.fromWeb, data.webPreview, and data.webRefresh commands, the From Web dialog, and the Refresh All control. The title is specific, and it is one sentence. It includes an emoji (▶️), which the title guidance says to avoid. That is a minor style issue and does not change the assessment.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1356] is the only active directly linked issue. The PR adds HTTPS URL input, table detection, preview, table selection, import into a new sheet, and saved WebQuery connections. data.webRefresh and the UI Sync controls refresh the connected table in place, preserve matching table metadata, restore totals, and report last_synced and fetch errors. The summary also reports tests for parsing, limits, preview, import, and refresh behavior. Refresh-on-open and XLSX connections.xml support are documented follow-ups, not required for the one-click Sync flow.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support [#1356]. The native gridcraft-webquery crate provides the HTTPS fetcher and safety limits. Engine changes provide HTML extraction, commands, saved connection state, refresh handling, and rename cleanup. UI changes provide the From Web Navigator, Queries & Connections, Sync controls, status display, and background fetch integration. Session wiring, tests, keytips, layer registration, parity documents, and gap documents support delivery of this feature. No unrelated product change is established by the summary.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 91.94% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 62 functions across 23 files. Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/web.rs:
- Around line 83-87: Update the default sheet-name derivation in the `name`
expression so it uses the site name rather than the top-level domain, and strips
user-info and port components from the URL authority before selecting it. Add
coverage for importing from `https://www.example.com/x` without a `sheet`
parameter, expecting the sheet name `example`.
- Around line 244-245: Update rewrite_table to write refreshed rows starting at
old.start instead of A1, and build the new RangeRef by offsetting from old.start
so the table remains at its saved origin. Add a test that moves the table before
calling data.webRefresh and verifies the refresh preserves its location without
overwriting unrelated cells.
- Around line 244-245: Update rewrite_table to check the expanded destination
range before clearing or writing: for cells outside the old range, reject the
refresh if any contain a formula or non-empty value. Return an error on
collision and preserve the existing write behavior when the expanded area is
unoccupied.
- Line 233: Wrap the bodies of from_web and rewrite_table in grouped operations
so each workflow rolls back on failure and forms one undo step. In
rewrite_table, propagate errors from insert.table instead of discarding them, so
a failed insertion cannot leave the connection pointing to a missing table.
- Around line 214-226: Update load_table to retry table creation with an
automatically generated name if the requested name is rejected, then save and
return the actual created name. In the refresh lookup using q.sheet and q.name,
match the named table only within q.sheet and remove the fallback that selects
the sheet’s first table.
- Around line 151-153: Update json_rows to prefix non-empty cell strings
beginning with “=” with an apostrophe before converting them to JSON, so imports
and refreshes store them as text rather than formulas. Preserve the existing
handling of empty and other non-empty values.
- Around line 134-142: Update the replacement predicate in load_table’s
web_queries retain call to identify an existing connection by destination sheet
and workbook table name (sheet and name), rather than URL and page-table name.
Preserve connections for imports targeting other sheets.

Review comments at @crates/engine/src/webquery.rs:
- Around line 100-108: Update the td/th handling in the webquery table parser so
cell placement honors colspan and rowspan: clamp spans to table limits, skip
columns covered by earlier rowspans, and add placeholders for colspan columns.
Track thead, tbody, and tfoot boundaries so rowspan="0" extends only to the end
of its current group; do not rely on clip_html’s Grid or span() without
addressing their limitations.
- Around line 284-298: Update attr() to match the requested attribute name only
at an attribute boundary, so searching for id= does not match data-id=. Preserve
the existing value parsing once a complete attribute-name match is found.

Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:
- Around line 2937-2938: When Go stores a new URL and clears the cached tables
through d.values, also reset the table selection to index 0 so it cannot
reference a table from the previous preview. In the from_web error branch, set
confirm to false after recording the error so the dialog remains open, including
when the URL is empty.

Review comments at @crates/webquery/src/lib.rs:
- Around line 34-37: Update redact so logged URLs retain only their scheme and
authority, excluding userinfo, path, query, and fragment; return a safe
placeholder when the URL has no recognizable scheme and authority.

- Default sheet name is the site's own name, not the TLD (www.example.com
-> example), with second-level country suffixes (.co.uk) skipped
- A connection is identified by its sheet and table name, so importing the
same page into another sheet no longer deletes the first sheet's connection
- The page table's name is sanitized into a valid table name; a taken name
gets a generated one, and the connection saves the name actually created
- Import and refresh are one undo step (s.grouped): a failure rolls the
workbook back instead of leaving an empty sheet or a half-cleared table,
and a failed insert.table is no longer silently dropped
- Refresh writes at the table's own origin, not A1, so a moved table
refreshes in place and A1 is not overwritten
- extract_tables honours colspan/rowspan, including rowspan="0" within its
row group, and attr() matches whole attribute names (no data-id= hit)
- redact() logs only the URL origin: userinfo and path never reach the log
- From Web dialog: Go resets the table pick, and a failed import keeps the
  dialog open

- extract_tables caps each table at MAX_TABLE_CELLS (1M, like clip_html's

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Bound aggregate table output before appending to out.

A valid HTTPS page can contain about 883,000 repetitions of <table><td></table> within the 16 MiB download limit. Each repetition becomes a retained WebTable with an allocated name and row vectors. The one-million-cell limit applies separately to each table, so it does not limit this aggregate allocation.

data.webPreview then maps every retained table into another collected result, and data.fromWeb retains every table until it selects one. This can cause substantial memory use and make preview or import unavailable.

Enforce a shared aggregate table/cell budget at extract_tables output accumulation, and expose truncation or return an error to both commands. Do not replace the existing per-table cell budget.

- extract_tables shares a MAX_PAGE_CELLS budget (4M) across all retained
tables: 1,000 wide-colspan tables can no longer expand to ~200M padded

crates/engine/src/cmd/web.rs:71-84
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Persist which duplicate table was imported, or refresh re-imports the first same-named table.

data.webRefresh finds the source table by name alone. The saved connection stores only table.name, so every Sync rewrites the sheet table with the first duplicate-name table from the page, not the table the user imported. A page with duplicate table IDs can produce this result. This overwrites the user's data with different content on each Sync.

If the Navigator sends a name to data.fromWeb, the initial import also takes the first match. The Navigator-side call was reported in a prior account and was not re-read in this check.

Suggested fix

Add an occurrence index to the saved connection. Use it to choose the same same-named table on refresh. Keep the default at 0 so existing connections still pick the first match.

The import side must also set occurrence when it saves the connection. Compute it in from_web as the count of earlier tables with the same name as the chosen table. Pass it into load_table, and set it on the WebQuery literal at table: table.name.clone(). Update any other WebQuery constructors that the build reports. Also make the import use the chosen index, not the name, when the Navigator provides one.

Set the page-budget fixture to exceed the page budget.

Each fixture table holds 4,000 cells. The 1,000 tables total exactly MAX_PAGE_CELLS, so the cells <= MAX_PAGE_CELLS check still passes if page-wide accounting is removed. The table-count check also passes at MAX_TABLES. Using colspan="4001" makes the uncapped total 4,001,000 cells, which exceeds the budget. The shared budget then limits the result, so the assertion detects a regression in the page-wide accounting.

A page can hold several tables with the same id. The connection now
records the zero-based occurrence among same-named tables (serde default
0 for existing connections), data.fromWeb accepts an occurrence from
the Navigator, and data.webRefresh re-imports the occurrence the user
imported instead of the first same-named table. The page-budget test
fixture exceeds the budget (colspan 4001), so the assertion catches a
regression in the page-wide accounting.

crates/engine/src/cmd/web.rs:341-355
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Check the expanded destination before a refresh overwrites nearby cells.

When a saved web table refreshes with more rows or columns than its old range, rewrite_table writes the whole new rectangle at old.start with range.setValues (web.rs:353). It does not check that rectangle for existing content. Any nonempty cell outside the old table, including a user formula, is replaced with no error. The refresh then reports success.

This contradicts the in-code contract at web.rs:309-311 ("Formulas and formatting outside the range are kept") and the PR's stated promise to leave formulas elsewhere untouched.

Fix: before edit.clearContents, compute the rectangle of table.rows.len() rows by w columns anchored at old.start. Exclude the cells of the old table range. If any remaining cell is nonempty, return an error before any change is made. This matches the refusal the analysis output path already uses (analysis.rs:1108-1109). Clear and write only after that check passes. The cell-occupancy accessor was not inspected, so no code diff is given.

Require HTTPS before accepting prefetched tables.

When a caller passes an http:// URL with prefetched or a matching prefetchedByUrl entry, data.fromWeb accepts the URL and imports the supplied table without calling the native provider. Install the web provider in every CLI session, including the --sample sessions.

open and blank set web_source. The --sample branches of run (lines 424-428) and mcp (lines 546-550) still build Session::new() without it. So gridcraft-cli run --sample sales --cmd 'data.fromWeb={"url":"https://…"}' fails with "Web page import is not available in this build." The headless MCP server started with --sample fails the same way.

Use one constructor for all of these sessions.

Check that the pending fetch belongs to this dialog before poll_fetch runs it.

poll_preview_fetch calls app.poll_fetch() for any finished fetch. poll_fetch runs the stored command right away. The checks come only after that:

  • Foreign command. The user opens From Web and then clicks Refresh All on the ribbon. The ribbon stays usable while the dialog is open. dialogs::show runs before the app-level block in app.rs. So this function runs data.webRefresh first. Its result has no sheet key, so d.values["tables"] becomes Null. The dialog then shows "No tables were found on this page." report_refresh_all never runs, so refresh errors are never shown.
  • Stale address. The user clicks Load before Go, which starts a data.fromWeb fetch. Then the user edits the URL. When the fetch finishes, poll_fetch imports the old page and creates a sheet and a connection. After that, the fetch_url check returns false, so no toast appears. The user gets an unexpected sheet. This conflicts with the comment "an old page never lands under the new URL".

Check the command id and URL before polling. Leave other commands to their own pollers. Discard stale fetches without running them.

Following the external-data review discussion on #1430, we audited this PR against the same trust boundary. One item applied here: URLs with userinfo (https://user:pass@host) are now refused at request() (9a11b87) — ureq would send them as basic auth and the saved connection stores the URL verbatim, so a secret typed into the address would persist with the workbook. Covered with a test.

The other points don't apply to this PR's scope: web connections don't round-trip through XLSX yet (the xl/connections.xml write is a declared follow-up), there's no SQL/driver/local-path surface (https GET only, no redirects, size/time capped), and page text can't become formulas. A per-document external-data trust prompt becomes relevant when the connections.xml round-trip lands — worth attaching to that follow-up.

Decode the capped body with its declared HTTP charset.

ureq::Body::charset() exposes the Content-Type charset. The current code ignores it and applies UTF-8 decoding to the capped bytes. A windows-1252 HTML response can therefore write replacement characters into imported cells. Decode after the existing cap so the cap remains unchanged.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Invalidate cached preview data when the workbook changes.

When this guard returns an error, poll_preview_fetch clears tables but keeps full_tables. If the dialog had a previous preview for the same URL, Load skips the new fetch and passes that stale snapshot to data.fromWeb. The command then imports it into the newly active workbook. Clear full_tables in this error path before allowing Load to continue. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Suggested fix
             Err(e) => {
+                d.values.remove("full_tables");
                 app.message = Some(("From Web".into(), crate::clean_error(&e)));
                 d.values.insert("tables".into(), Json::Null);
             }

Review comment at @crates/ui-egui/src/web_fetch.rs around lines 104 - 106:
In poll_preview_fetch, clear the cached full_tables value when handling the
workbook-changed error, alongside clearing tables, so Load cannot reuse a stale
preview snapshot.

Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/web.rs:
- Around line 413-454: Update rewrite_table so refresh clears and resizes only
page-owned columns, retaining old columns beyond the fetched width when their
TableColumn.formula is set. Include retained columns in the clash check, then
refill their formulas across the resized rows after writing fetched data. Add a
test that adds a calculated column, runs data.webRefresh, and verifies the
column and its formulas remain.

Review comments at @crates/engine/src/webquery.rs:
- Around line 103-166: Update the tag match in the web-query parsing flow to
push a space into the open cell for br, p, div, and li tags, whether opening or
closing; let collapse_ws normalize repeated whitespace. Add a test confirming
that A<br>B in a cell imports as A B.

Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/web_fetch.rs:
- Around line 35-38: Update start_fetch to refuse a different fetch while one is
running, displaying a message instead of replacing its JoinHandle; preserve
replacement when the pending fetch is data.webPreview and the new fetch is
data.fromWeb for the same URL, as well as the existing identical-fetch early
return.

Review comments at @crates/webquery/src/lib.rs:
- Around line 60-75: After the `call()` result is assigned to `resp`, check
`resp.status()` for 3xx responses and return a redirect-specific error before
content-type validation or table extraction. Include the `Location` target,
applying the existing URL redaction policy; leave non-redirect response handling
unchanged.
