What this changes

Dates stored with a locale-specific built-in number format now show as dates instead of serial numbers, and keep their date format when the workbook is saved.

Cause. A numFmtId from 27–36 or 50–81 has no format code in the file: ECMA-376 §18.8.30 defines these ids only for the East Asian and Thai locales. Workbooks from other locales use them too. A workbook saved with the es-MX region stored its dates as 58. crates/xlsx/src/tables.rs only knew the en-US ids (0–22, 37–49), so styles.rs read the rest as General. The dates showed as 46307 where Excel shows 12/10/26, and saving wrote them back as General.

Fix. LOCALE_FORMATS maps each locale-specific id to the en-US built-in that Excel shows it as, and builtin_format consults it. builtin_id is unchanged, so saving writes the en-US id (58 → 14), which Excel shows the same way. The .xls reader and pivot caches use the same lookup, so they get the fix too.

Observed, not looked up

The mapping comes from black-box observation of Excel for Mac (es-MX region). I used a synthetic workbook with one cell per built-in id 0–81, all holding 46307.5625, and read each cell's number format, number format local and displayed text through AppleScript. The workbook was never saved.

ids Excel shows them as
27–31, 36, 50–58, 71, 72 m/d/yy, the short date (14)
32–35, 77 h:mm:ss (21)
59–62, 63–66, 67–68, 69–70 1–4, 5–8, 9–10, 12–13
73, 74, 75, 76, 78, 79, 80, 81 15, 16, 17, 20, 22, 45, 46, 47
23–26 General (unchanged)

Tests

  • tables::tests::locale_builtin_ids_read_as_excel_shows_them: the mapping, ids that stay General (23–26, 82+), save as 14, and every en-US built-in untouched.
  • tests::fixtures::locale_date_format_reads_as_a_date_and_saves_as_one: a synthetic workbook with a date in id 58 reads as m/d/yyyy, then is written and read again with the same format.
  • tests::fixtures::styles_theme_and_sizes expected id 30 to read as General. That expectation dates from the M0 foundation commit, not from an observation. It now expects the short date, as Excel shows it.

All three fail with the lookup reverted. On macOS 27.0.1 (Apple silicon), Rust 1.99.0, on d9d09f0:

  • cargo test -p gridcraft-xlsx: 175 passed
  • cargo clippy -p gridcraft-xlsx --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo fmt --all --check: clean

By hand: the original workbook (private data, not attached) shows its date column as dates in cargo run -p gridcraft.

Not covered

  • The regional short date. In the es-MX region, Excel shows id 14 as dd/mm/aa, while GridCraft's short date is always m/d/yyyy. These dates now read as 10/12/2026 where Excel shows 12/10/26. That is a separate, larger change.
  • East Asian and Thai locales. In those Excel builds, ids 27–36 and 50–81 have their own formats (for example 58 is m"月"d"日" in ja-JP), and after a save from GridCraft they become the en-US id. Before this change they were dropped entirely.

Relation to other PRs

#820 (draft) removes crates/numfmt/src/builtin.rs and keeps crates/xlsx/src/tables.rs as the only table. This PR only touches the xlsx table, so it stays out of #820's way. One thing #820 would need to adjust: its new builtin_format_ids test pins 23–36 and 50 as absent.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Locale-specific built-in number formats are now recognized, improving how dates, times, and numbers display in supported spreadsheets.
    • Formats 30 and 58 now resolve to m/d/yyyy instead of General; dates using format 58 retain their date format after an XLSX file is saved and reopened.
    • Thai date and time formats are recognized, while unmapped format IDs continue to return no built-in format. Existing en-US format behavior remains unchanged.

Review notes (comment only). I checked the mapping tables against real Excel: Microsoft Excel 16.0 on Windows (en-US), opening a synthetic one-sheet xlsx I built with a cell per numFmtId (value 46307.75, each cell style applyNumberFormat="1"), and reading Cell.Text and Cell.NumberFormat through COM; workbook closed unsaved. I did not build or run the Rust tests; rustfmt --check is clean for the two changed Rust files.

Result: Excel resolved every id in LOCALE_FORMATS to exactly the en-US built-in the PR maps it to:

  • 27-31, 36, 50-58 -> m/d/yyyy (id 14); 32-35 -> h:mm:ss (21).
  • 59 -> 0, 60 -> 0.00, 61 -> #,##0, 62 -> #,##0.00, 63/64 -> the $#,##0_);... currency formats (5/6), 65/66 -> $#,##0.00_);... (7/8), 67 -> 0%, 68 -> 0.00%, 69 -> # ?/?, 70 -> # ??/??.
  • 71, 72 -> m/d/yyyy; 73 -> d-mmm-yy; 74 -> d-mmm; 75 -> mmm-yy; 76 -> h:mm; 77 -> h:mm:ss; 78 -> m/d/yyyy h:mm; 79 -> mm:ss; 80 -> [h]:mm:ss; 81 -> mm:ss.0.
  • 23, 26 and 82 stay General, which matches the doc comment ("23-26, 82 and up").

Not tested: ids 24 and 25 (the doc comment lists 23-26 as General; I tested 23 and 26), what Excel writes back when saving one of these ids, and a non-en-US Windows region, where the same ids may resolve differently (the PR's evidence is Excel for Mac with es-MX; on this machine en-US gave the same answers).

…m, so their dates aren't serial numbers

Built-in ids 27-36 and 50-81 have no format code in the file; ECMA-376
§18.8.30 defines them only for the East Asian and Thai locales, but
workbooks from other locales use them too (an es-MX workbook stored its
dates as 58). GridCraft only knew the en-US ids, so these read as General:
the dates showed as serial numbers (46307) and saving dropped their format.

Each one now reads as the en-US built-in Excel shows it as, observed
black-box in Excel for Mac (es-MX region) on a synthetic workbook with one
cell per id: the dates as the short date (14), the times as h:mm:ss (21),
and 59-81 as the matching number, percent, fraction, date and time formats.
23-26 stay General, as in Excel. Saving writes the en-US id, which Excel
shows the same way. The .xls reader and pivot caches share the table.

styles_theme_and_sizes expected id 30 to read as General; it now reads as
the short date, as Excel shows it.

Rebased on main (146161b); the only conflict was in crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs, next to the D1 assertion. Thanks @Harrison-Booth for checking the table against Excel on Windows; it matches what Excel for Mac with es-MX gave. cargo test -p gridcraft-xlsx (271 passed), fmt and clippy clean.

Walkthrough

The built-in format lookup maps locale-specific IDs 27–36 and 50–81 to en-US formats. Tests cover mapped and unmapped IDs, date-format expectations, and format preservation after writing and rereading a workbook.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Workbook authors can select the newly recognized IDs and thereby change formatting through existing import paths. The inspected change expands recognized data representations, not the caller's privileges or the set of executable operations available through the lookup.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing custom-format override remains ahead of built-in resolution. The changed lookup performs bounded searches of fixed tables and returns an optional static string; it introduces no new identity or authorization decision.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The change introduces no new shared-state transition or recovery protocol. Format-ID allocation remains local to style serialization, and repeated requests for a custom code reuse its assigned ID. The added mapping does not alter that allocation sequence.

Add a rendered-value assertion for the loaded date cell.

The fixture checks only the stored "m/d/yyyy" format code before and after the round trip. No XLSX integration test passes the loaded cell through the repository display path, so a regression that displays 46307 as a serial number can still pass.

… the locale date shows as a date

The builtin_format doc said saving writes the en-US id for every locale id,
but 63-66 read as the currency formats 5-8, which builtin_id writes as
custom formats. The locale date test checked only the format code; it now
also formats A1 through gridcraft-numfmt (a dev-dependency) and expects
10/12/2026 rather than the serial 46307.

Addressed CodeRabbit's review in 31937e7:

  • The builtin_format doc now says the currency ids 63–66 read as 5–8, which builtin_id saves as custom formats.
  • locale_date_format_reads_as_a_date_and_saves_as_one also formats A1 through gridcraft-numfmt (a new dev-dependency; cargo xtask layers allows it) and expects 10/12/2026. Without the fix it fails with 46307.

cargo test -p gridcraft-xlsx (271 passed), fmt and clippy clean.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the first 40 lines of the diff: XLSX files from other locales use built-in number format ids that ECMA-376 §18.8.30 defines only for the East Asian and Thai locales (27 to 36 and 50 to 81), and the reader read them as General, so an es-MX workbook that stored its dates as id 58 showed serial numbers. A new table LOCALE_FORMATS of 42 pairs maps each id to the en-US built-in format Excel shows it as (27 to 31 and 36, and 50 to 58, as 14, the short date; 32 to 35 as 21, h:mm:ss; 59 and up as the matching number, percent, fraction, date and time formats), and the comment says the table was observed black-box in Excel for Mac with the es-MX region on a synthetic workbook, one cell per id. Observing the behaviour of the product on a synthetic file, instead of copying a table from somewhere, is the right provenance, and the note on its method is useful. Two points: what Excel shows for these ids depends on the region of the computer that opens the file, so the table gives one region's answer and a file opened in Japan shows another (a Japanese date for 27); the reader should keep the id and say it is locale dependent, and map to the user's locale where it can; and ids 23 to 26 and 82 up remain General, which should have a test. A test dependency on gridcraft-numfmt is added to show a loaded cell through the formatter, which is a dev dependency only. I did not read the rest of the table or the tests. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
