Summary

Adds Georgian (ka, ქართული) as an interface language, in the shape of #335 (Czech) and #453 (Serbian).

  • crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/ka.rs: 973 labels, every key any language table has (the ribbon, sheet tabs, File view and the dialogs that look their labels up, ~44% of the interface strings).
  • i18n.rs: Language::Ka (name ქართული, code ka, system tags ka, ka-GE, ka_GE.UTF-8), appended to the end of ALL.
  • app.language.set: the help lists every code (it lacked fr and sr too), and the error message is built from Language::ALL, so it can't go stale again.
  • Rows in docs/localization-parity.md and ROADMAP.md.

Fonts

None of egui's default faces has Georgian, so Georgian joins the installed-font fallback search that Thai, Hebrew and CJK already use (theme.rs fallback_faces): Sylfaen on Windows, SF Georgian on macOS, Noto Sans Georgian or DejaVu Sans on Linux. Nothing is bundled; a machine without any of them keeps the old behaviour. GridCraft doesn't load craft-fonts; if it does later, craft-fonts' Noto Sans Georgian (Geor, storytold/craft-fonts#27) can replace this like the other scripts.

The web build can't read installed fonts, so it doesn't start in Georgian: a ka browser starts in English (as a Chinese, Japanese or Korean one already does), and its ?sample= workbook is English too, until GridCraft loads craft-fonts (c1d6b59, Language::draws_on_web). The language menus still list every language on the web, as they already do for Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Commits, one per topic (the Georgian-only ones need no other language to change):

  • 8205c7c i18n: add Georgian (ka) interface translations: the catalog, language entry, tests and docs above.
  • a581ce6 PROPER and Flash Fill: no word capitals for Georgian: Unicode maps Georgian Mkhedruli to Mtavruli capitals, so PROPER("გამარჯობა") gave Გამარჯობა. Georgian has no word capitals; Mtavruli is only for all-caps text.
  • 2a05d8b Samples in Georgian: The sample workbooks (budget, sales, grades) can be written in Georgian.
  • c4a7f2d Georgian interface text draws from an installed font: the Fonts section above.
  • dd3e913 Name new workbooks and sheets in the interface language: Excel names new workbooks and sheets in its own language (Mappe1/Tabelle1 in German, Книга1/Лист1 in Russian). GridCraft always used Book1/Sheet1. With 5ebc1e6, the engine stores the base words (Prefs::default_names, default Book/Sheet) and the interface sets them from its catalog keys new workbook|Book and new workbook|Sheet, so every language can name them the way Excel does; a catalog without the keys keeps Book1/Sheet1. Georgian's catalog gives წიგნი1 / ფურცელი1. No language code is checked in the engine.
  • c1d6b59 Web: don't follow a Georgian browser into tofu: see Fonts.
  • f658dd2 Only the startup workbook is renamed on a language switch: the session remembers the blank workbook it started with and forgets it once any other document is added, so an opened or imported blank workbook (from bytes, without a path) is never replaced.
  • 54a47fb Sync the naming language around every command: a command run before the first frame (a control or host file.new, Insert Sheet) already names in the interface language, and a language change applies at once.
  • 720a38c9 Merge main (23829d8c): conflicts in cmd/file.rs (main's file.open with csvAsText, this PR's file.new with language), engine/src/tests.rs (both new tests kept) and docs/localization-parity.md (main's rows and header, plus the Georgian ones). The catalog needed no new rows: main's new German context-menu keys and the French/Serbian context|label fixes are keys ka.rs already has.

What does not change

  • Formulas. Georgian keeps the canonical en-US formula locale, like every interface language except Spanish: English function names, , separators, . decimals.

  • Number formats, regional settings, storage, command ids. The ka-GE regional format is a separate PR (ka-region, on M12: regional formats (typed and displayed numbers, dates and times) #447).

  • No new assets; no font files.

  • casing: Every other script, UPPER/LOWER, formulas, number formats, storage.

  • samples: The English samples, formulas, number-format engine, storage, command ids (one optional parameter).

  • default-names: Names of existing sheets and workbooks, saved files, formulas that reference sheets, command ids. English names stay Book1/Sheet1.

Translation quality

Original translation from the meaning of each English label (clean-room: no Microsoft Excel or other vendor localization copied). Terminology follows one glossary shared by the Craft apps, so the same command has the same Georgian name in GridCraft, WordCraft and DeckCraft. Commands are verbal nouns (ჩასმა, შენახვა); Georgian has no capitals. A native Georgian speaker reviewed the table. The table was written with AI assistance (Claude).

Tests

  • Full cargo xtask ci on 720a38c9 (this head, main merged at 23829d8c; Linux x86_64, stable Rust): all 8 steps passed (fmt, clippy, test, assets, layers, wasm, parity, keytips); 1,664 tests.

Georgian-specific tests:

  • Catalog completeness now also requires a non-empty Georgian label for every reference key.

  • Georgian probes (Data → მონაცემები, pass-through of Sheet1!A1), ka-GE / ka_GE.UTF-8 / parse("ka").

  • Georgian shares the default Han font order (theme.rs); the fallback-face list includes sys-georgian, and the per-script render check resolves a Georgian sample to a real glyph when a Georgian face is installed.

  • PROPER: Mkhedruli stays as it is, Mtavruli is lowered; UPPER gives Mtavruli.

  • Flash Fill apply_case: Georgian proper case stays lower case, English still capitalises.

Existing sample tests run unchanged for English.

new_workbooks_and_sheets_take_the_interface_default_names: Book1 in English; switching to Georgian renames the untouched start-up workbook to წიგნი1 with ფურცელი1; Insert Sheet adds ფურცელი2; a workbook with content keeps its names when switching back; a new English workbook is Book1/Sheet1.

a_language_switch_never_discards_an_opened_blank_workbook: a blank xlsx opened from bytes keeps its document, title and sheet names when the language changes. new_workbooks_and_sheets_follow_the_language_before_any_frame: with Georgian set before any frame, file.new gives წიგნი2 and Insert Sheet ფურცელი2; app.language.set and app.language.english update the names at once. the_web_build_follows_only_languages_it_can_draw: Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Georgian are the ones skipped.

crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/ka.rs translates all 973 labels any language table has. Language::Ka (name ქართული, code ka; ka, ka-GE and ka_GE.UTF-8 system tags) is appended to Language::ALL. The app.language.set help lists every code, and its error message is built from Language::ALL. Tests: completeness, Georgian probes, tag parsing, default Han font order.

Unicode maps Georgian Mkhedruli to Mtavruli capitals, but Mtavruli is only for all-caps text. gridcraft_core::capitalizes() makes PROPER and Flash Fill's proper case leave Georgian in lower case; UPPER still gives Mtavruli.

file.new {sample} takes an optional language; Backstage and the web ?sample= link pass the interface language. In Georgian the samples get Georgian sheet names, headers, titles, the table's total label and lari amounts; formulas stay canonical. Other languages get English, as before.

As Excel does in its own language, a Georgian interface names new workbooks წიგნი1… and new sheets ფურცელი1… (Session::set_language, synced from the interface each frame; Session::default_names). The untouched start-up workbook is renamed when the language is known; a workbook with content keeps its names. The AutoSave label goes through tr().

sets them from its catalog keys `new workbook|Book` and `new workbook|Sheet`, so any language can

📝 Walkthrough

The application adds Georgian (ka) interface support, localized sample workbooks, language-based workbook and sheet names, Georgian font fallback, and Georgian-aware casing.

The UI registers Georgian translations and locale tags. Georgian font fallback and web language filtering are added. Localization coverage records are updated.
Build samples in the selected language
apps/gridcraft-web/src/web.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/backstage.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, crates/engine/src/sample.rs
Sample creation passes the interface language to the engine. Sample titles and workbook content use Georgian translations for ka tags and English otherwise.
Apply interface-based workbook and sheet names
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/model/src/workbook.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/{analysis,forecast,pivot,sheet}.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/formula_locale.rs
Session preferences provide workbook and sheet name defaults. Workbook creation and sheet-insertion commands use those defaults. A defaults change replaces the startup workbook only when it is the single untouched blank document.
Handle Georgian casing
crates/core/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/fill.rs, crates/functions/src/text.rs
The shared capitalizes function excludes Georgian ranges. Proper-case operations use that check, with Georgian and English tests.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 720a3

The Georgian language changes appear ready to merge after normal checks; no unresolved issue is established.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 720a3

The inspected language-selection changes do not expand access to files, credentials, or other workbooks. However, switching languages after undoing all startup-workbook edits can discard the remaining redo history. The demonstrated impact is limited to recoverable edits in that local document.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Language synchronization can discard startup-workbook recovery history. After an edit followed by undo back to the initial blank workbook, undo history is empty and the workbook can be clean while redo still contains the edit. The new replacement predicate ignores redo, so changing to a language with different default names closes that document and creates another with fresh identity and empty history. Dirty-state and startup-identity guards limit the impact, but do not preserve this recoverable user state.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated state-loss path is confined to an eligible startup document in the current Session. The inspected path does not establish cross-session, cross-user, or service-wide exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing control methods reach SheetApp through its command gateway. The locale change adds an internal naming side effect rather than a new command dispatcher or privileged sink. Authentication of the external control server was not established by this scoped inspection.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The retained concern concerns recovery-state ownership, not increased attacker authority: a clean workbook can still own meaningful redo snapshots, and recreating its document destroys those snapshots outside ordinary edit recovery.

The web build reads no installed fonts, and GridCraft's Georgian comes only from them, so a ka browser starts in English, like a CJK one, and its ?sample= workbook is English too. Language::draws_on_web holds the rule.

set_default_names replaced any lone untouched blank workbook, so a blank workbook opened from bytes (no path, as on the web) or imported could be discarded. The session now remembers the workbook it started with and forgets it once any other document is added.

New workbooks and sheets took the interface language only from the first frame on, so a command run before it (a control or host file.new) named them in English; a language change now applies at once too.

Reject unsupported languages in the web command path.

The web language selectors include ka and invoke app.language.set. The command accepts ka without checking Language::draws_on_web(). The WASM fallback loader returns no font data, so Georgian interface text can render as tofu. Apply the web guard in app.language.set.
