Insert: new rows, columns and cells take the formats of the cells above or to the left - #1100
home.insertRows, home.insertColumns and home.insertCells (shift down or right) leave the new cells unformatted. Only the line settings of the row above or the column to the left were copied (LineInfo: height or width, whole-line style). Formats set on cells, which is how Excel, openpyxl and most generators store borders, fills and number formats, were lost: a row inserted into a bordered, filled list comes out as a white strip with no borders and General numbers, and an agent has to repair it cell by cell.
Excel gives inserted cells the formats of the cells above or to the left by default ("Format Same As Above"). Range.Insert's CopyOrigin defaults to xlFormatFromLeftOrAbove (https://learn.microsoft.com/office/vba/api/excel.range.insert), and the example on that page shows the default copies from a header row too: to take the row below instead you pass xlFormatFromRightOrBelow. So this keeps the simple rule, header row included, with one exception for borders at the edge of a block (below).
What changed
All in crates/engine/src/cmd/sheet.rs and crates/engine/src/cmd/data/grouping.rs, plus regression tests and docs/ui-parity.md.
New format_same_as_before: gives every inserted cell the style of the cell before it across the insert, i.e. the row above for rows and for cells shifted down, the column to the left for columns and for cells shifted right. Only the StyleId: values, formulas, comments, hyperlinks and merges stay behind.
insert_lines calls it after the existing LineInfo copy, over the whole row or column. insert_cells calls it for the inserted block only (its columns for a shift down, its rows for a shift right). shift: row|column already goes through insert_lines.
Row 1 and column A have nothing before them: inserts there store no format, the same as the existing LineInfo copy. Excel does the same (checked, below).
A new cell is stored only when the copied style differs from what its row or column format already gives it, so a whole-row format (a row style plus the same style on its cells) adds no cells.
The params text of the three commands says what the new cells take, since that is what agents read in list_commands.
Borders at the edge of a block (inserted_style, added after @Harrison-Booth's Excel check below). Fill, number format, font and alignment are copied whole, as before. Borders follow this rule, for rows (the cell above is the source, the cell below the insert is the "far" cell) and the same way for columns (left source, right far cell):
the edge shared with the source (its bottom edge for rows, right edge for columns) becomes the new cell's top (left) edge;
the new cell's opposite edge (bottom, or right) is kept only where the far cell has a border on the edge it shares with the new cell (its top, or left);
a side edge (left and right for rows, top and bottom for columns) is kept only where both the source and the far cell have it.
In the middle of a boxed list the far cell is the next list row, so all four borders are copied. Below the last row (or right of the last column) the far cell is empty, so only the shared edge is kept. A thick outer border on the right is not copied to a row inserted below the block.
data.subtotal: it inserts its total rows with home.insertRows, so they take the fill, number format and borders of the row above, as in Excel. It used to make the whole total row bold; now only the label cell ("East Total", "Grand Total") is bold, and the amount cells are not. The grand total label is now bold too, as in Excel.
Cost. It reads the line before the insert and the row/column style metadata. Source positions are the stored cells in that line plus, for inserted blocks, positions reached by whole-line styles. Destination lines are grouped by inherited style. The cap counts only newly stored styles that differ from that inheritance, rather than candidate positions. A source with 16,383 styled cells, whose whole-line format already covers all but one, needs only 1,000 stored cells when 1,000 lines are inserted. If more than 1,000,000 stored cells would be needed, none of the cell-format copies are applied; the structural insert and copied LineInfo still succeed. The command result then reports {"formattingSkipped":true,"formattingCellLimit":1000000}. Below the cap the existing null result is preserved. The border rule reads one more style per source cell (the far cell) and derives styles through the style table, so the same cells are stored as before.
Checked in Excel
@Harrison-Booth checked this PR's claims in a real Excel 365 (Microsoft 365, version 16.0 build 20527, Windows), through COM on temporary workbooks, with the default CopyOrigin (two comments on this PR). They did not run GridCraft. Thank you.

Row inserted right under the header takes the header format (bold, fill); xlFormatFromRightOrBelow gives the list row's instead
confirmed
match (default rule, header row included)
Column inserted between columns takes the column to the left, cell by cell
confirmed

Cells shifted down under the header and in the middle of a list; cells shifted right take the cells to their left, the shifted cell keeps its own format
confirmed
match
Row 1 and column A: nothing before them
new row 1 and column A are completely unformatted (no fill, borders, number format or bold), also over a bordered, filled row; Excel does not take the format from below
match: stores no format
Insert Copied Cells from another sheet
a whole copied row gives A3 to Z3 the copied row's fill and its number format
differs: cells past the pasted range keep the format of the row above (already in the list below)
data.subtotal
total rows take the fill, number format and borders of the row above; only the label cell is bold
match since the subtotal fix above (it made the whole row bold)
Borders on the outer edge of a block
in a boxed list (thin borders on all edges, plus a fill): a row inserted below the last row got the fill and number format but only its top border (the edge shared with the old last row); a column inserted right of the last column got its left border only; inserts in the middle copied all four borders; a thick outer border on the right was not copied
match since the border rule above (it copied the whole style of the cell before)
Whole-row format with one cell set back to no fill
row 2 filled as a whole row, B2 set to no fill: inserted row 3 has B3 with no fill, A3, C3 and Z3 keep the fill
differs: B3 gets the row fill (model limit, below)
Not checked by them: conditional formats and data validation, the Insert Options button, the one-million-cell cap and formattingSkipped (GridCraft only), undo, the XLSX round trip, Excel for Mac.
Border cases: verified in Excel, and from the model only.
Verified in Excel (row and column inserts, thin borders on all edges plus a fill): insert in the middle (all four borders kept), insert below the last row (top only), insert right of the last column (left only), and a thick outer right border not copied to a row inserted below the block. Each has an engine test: inserting_in_a_box_keeps_all_four_borders, inserting_below_a_box_keeps_only_its_shared_top_border, inserting_right_of_a_box_keeps_only_its_shared_left_border, inserting_below_a_box_does_not_copy_its_thick_right_border.
Follow from the rule only, not observed in Excel: the same four cases for home.insertCells with shift down or right (the tests cover them, Excel's reports for these did not look at borders at the outer edge); a far cell that has some but not all of the borders; a source and far cell with different weights or colors (the far cell only decides whether an edge is kept, the weight and color come from the source); several lines inserted at once; row and column formats that carry borders and reach the inserted cells; diagonal borders (copied with the source as before). Tests: inserted_border_model_uses_shared_edges_and_checks_each_far_side, insert_border_model_also_filters_inherited_line_formats.
subtotal_rows_take_the_formats_above_and_bold_only_the_label checks the fill and number format of the total rows and which cells are bold.
Verification (Linux x86_64)
The earlier results below are from 2026-10-12 and 2026-10-13, before the border rule and the subtotal change. After the latest merge of upstream main (146161b4) and the two fixes: cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy -p gridcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test -p gridcraft-engine (596 tests: 513 unit and 83 integration) pass. The cargo xtask gates were not rerun in this pass.
cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --lib tests::inserted_rows_columns_and_cells_take_the_format_of_the_cells_before: a bold header over a bordered, filled list with a number format in one column, then a row, a column, cells shifted down (under the header) and cells shifted right. It checks each new cell's style id, that no value or formula is copied, that one undo removes the row with its formats, the XLSX round trip of a copied style, and that inserts in row 1 and column A store nothing and don't take the formats of the cells pushed below or to the right. Fails on main at the first insert (left: [StyleId(0), StyleId(0), StyleId(0)], right: [StyleId(3), StyleId(3), StyleId(4)]) and passes here.
tests::inserting_many_rows_under_a_wide_formatted_row_stays_bounded: A1:XFC1 filled cell by cell, 10 rows inserted under it take the fill (16,383 × 11 cells stored), 1,000 more rows under the last one store nothing, two undos go back to 16,383 cells. Fails on main at its first check (left: StyleId(0), right: StyleId(1)).
tests::insert_format_cap_counts_only_styles_not_already_inherited: row and column variants with 16,383 stored source cells plus a whole-line base style, one exception and 1,000 inserted lines. Exactly 1,000 new stored cells are required, their exception style is preserved, no skip result is returned, and undo removes them.
tests::inserted_cells_report_when_formatting_exceeds_the_storage_cap: shifted-down and shifted-right blocks that require more than 1,000,000 stored styles return the skip flag and limit, with zero partially copied style cells. The wide-row cap test also checks this result for whole rows.
Earlier baseline (2026-10-13): full upstream/main at 84acf6293b1dc1fc09837524e035d674eb4d6741, merged by commit d68816df. Both sides of the docs/ui-parity.md conflict are retained. cargo test -p gridcraft-engine passed 329 tests (290 unit and 39 integration), cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy -p gridcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings, and cargo xtask assets, layers, parity --check passed. cargo xtask wasm could not run to completion: the local toolchain lacks wasm32-unknown-unknown (E0463), so WASM is not verified.
Earlier MCP check on 2026-10-12, before the first review correction, fresh workbook (gridcraft-cli mcp): A1:C3 with values, format_range borders all and fill #FFF2CC, then home.insertRows {rows: "3:3"}, home.insertColumns {cols: "C:C"}, home.insertCells {range: "A2:D2", shift: "down"}, read back with get_cell:
Saved right after the row insert, xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml has no <row r="3"> on main; here it has <row r="3"><c r="A3" s="2"/><c r="B3" s="2"/><c r="C3" s="2"/></row>, the same s as rows 2 and 4. With the border rule, inserted cells inside the box (B3, C2) are unchanged by this table; a row inserted below the last row now has only its top border.
cargo test -p gridcraft-engine (lib and tests/, including command_sequence_fuzz with its defaults and params_docs_parse_into_keys) passed at the time.
The four regression tests above are copied unchanged into the full 84acf629 baseline; each exits 101 on an assertion (not a build error). The cap-count test gets StyleId(1) instead of StyleId(2); the skip-result test gets Null instead of true. Logs: v4-logs/negative-*.log.
Comparative fuzz replay on 2026-10-13, full branch 46ec8aca6ca20c83382a40336c5d9dd399d99bbb versus full upstream/main84acf6293b1dc1fc09837524e035d674eb4d6741: release builds, seeds 0 to 199 one at a time, GRIDCRAFT_FUZZ_SEED=<seed>, GRIDCRAFT_FUZZ_STEPS=200, nice -n 15, 20 s limit per seed. The two binaries are copied before rebuilding the other checkout; source timestamps are refreshed to avoid reuse of stale shared-target artifacts. Execution is serial, with branch/main order alternated per seed. Both runs have 179 successes, 9 failures and 12 timeouts. Every seed has the same exit code, and all failure headers and invariant messages are identical. Failed seeds: 4, 9, 39, 49, 79, 102, 130, 138, 175. Timeout seeds: 1, 3, 33, 38, 51, 76, 93, 110, 163, 179, 193, 195. Seed 38 times out on both; seed 83 passes on both. No branch-only failure or timeout was observed, so there is no differential fuzz regression to fix in this run. These dated results predate the border rule and are not repeated for it. Evidence: v4-logs/fuzz-summary.json, fuzz-failure-signatures.json, fuzz-manifest.json, per-seed logs and fuzz-binaries.sha256; driver: python3 v4-logs/fuzz-replay.py. Builds use CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2 and CARGO_TARGET_DIR=$HOME/.cache/ai-setup/pr-src/gridcraft/target-v3.
Limits and questions
The cap is a choice. Past 1,000,000 newly stored styles the insert still succeeds but its cell-format copies are skipped, reported by formattingSkipped and formattingCellLimit in the result. Alternatives: refuse the insert, format as many lines as fit, or store a uniform source line as a row or column style. Happy to change it.
Differences from Excel that remain (both reported by @Harrison-Booth):
A whole-row format with one cell set back to the default: the model can't store an empty cell with the default style, so a default-format cell in a row that has a row format still gives the new cell the row format. Excel leaves that new cell unformatted.
Insert Copied Cells inserts and then pastes the clipboard's range, which for whole rows or columns is trimmed to the source sheet's used range. On the same sheet that range covers every column holding a cell, so the result is the copied row as before. From another sheet, cells of the new row past the pasted range keep the format of the row above, where Excel gives them the copied row's (A3 to Z3 in their check). The existing LineInfo copy already behaves this way for whole-row formats.
Row 1 and column A stay unformatted, which matches Excel (previously an open question here).
No Insert Options button ("Format Same As Below", "Clear Formatting") and no CopyOrigin parameter. A format?: above|below|none parameter on the three commands would be a small follow-up if you want it. The border rule would apply to the "above" and "left" choices only.
Border behaviour for insertCells and for the uncommon border combinations listed above follows the model, not an Excel observation.
Conditional formats and data validation are unchanged: their ranges move or grow as before. Not compared with Excel.
Earlier conflict checks (2026-10-12)
The current upstream/main conflict in docs/ui-parity.md was resolved in merge d68816df, preserving both histories. The checks below are historical, not a fresh assessment of every open PR.
Inserted rows, columns, and cells inherit applicable formatting from nearby content, including borders at the edges of formatted areas. Inserts at the top or left remain unformatted when no preceding source is available.
Formatting is skipped when applying it would exceed the 1,000,000-cell limit, and the result indicates when formatting was skipped.
Bug Fixes
Subtotals bold only the group label, and grand totals now bold their label. Other subtotal cells retain their existing formatting.
…ve or to the left
home.insertRows and home.insertColumns copied only the line settings of
the row above or the column to the left (height, width, whole-line
style), and home.insertCells copied nothing. Formats set on cells, which
is how Excel, openpyxl and most generators store borders, fills and
number formats, were lost: a row inserted in a bordered, filled list came
out blank. Excel's default is "Format Same As Above" (Range.Insert's
CopyOrigin defaults to xlFormatFromLeftOrAbove).
format_same_as_before gives each inserted cell the style of the cell
before it on the other side of the insert: the row above for rows and
cells shifted down, the column to the left for columns and cells shifted
right. Only the style is copied; values, formulas, comments, links and
merges stay where they are. An insert in row 1 or column A has no line
before it and stays unformatted, as before.
It reads only the line before the insert: the cells stored in it, plus,
for inserted cells, the positions a row or column format reaches. A cell
whose style its row or column already gives is not stored. An insert
that would store more than 1,000,000 cells (a thousand rows under a row
formatted cell by cell across the sheet) leaves them unformatted; whole
rows and columns still take the line format.
The params text of the three commands says so, and docs/ui-parity.md
gains the row.

Hi, thanks for this. The body says Excel was not available for a few of the claims, so I tried them in a real Excel (Microsoft 365, version 16.0 build 20527, Windows) with temporary workbooks: a bold red header row, a 3-row list with thin borders on all edges and a fill, a 0.00% format in column C and 0.000 on A3, then Range.Insert through COM with the default CopyOrigin. I did not build or run GridCraft; the "PR expectation" column is from the PR body.

"Excel gives inserted cells the formats of the cells above or to the left", including borders
Not for the outer edge: with a boxed list (thin borders on all sides), a row inserted below the last row got the fill and number format but only the top border (the shared edge with the old last row); its left, right and bottom borders were not copied. The same for a column inserted to the right of the last column: left border only. Inserting in the middle copied all four borders. A thick outer border on the right was not copied either.

differs for borders on the outer edge of a block
Not checked: conditional formats and data validation; the Insert Options button; the one-million-cell cap and the formattingSkipped result (GridCraft side only); Excel for Mac.
Excel check of the PR's claims about inserted cells. Real Excel (Windows, version 16.0) through COM on a temporary workbook: row 1 is a bold, blue-filled header (A1:C1), A2:C3 have thin borders, a light-orange fill and values, B2:B3 are 0.00%. After each insert I read bold, fill, number format and left/bottom borders of the new cells (the sheet is rebuilt before each case). Nothing run against the GridCraft code.
Matches the description
Rows("3:3").Insert() between two list rows: A3:C3 get the fill and borders, and B3 gets 0.00%; values are empty (a formula in A2 is not copied).
Rows("2:2").Insert() directly under the header: the new row is bold with the header's fill (not the row below's formats), so the "header row included" rule is how Excel behaves by default. Passing CopyOrigin = xlFormatFromRightOrBelow (1) gives the list row's fill and 0.00% instead.
Range("A2:C2").Insert(xlShiftDown) under the header: new cells take the header's formats; the shifted cells keep theirs.
Range("B2:B3").Insert(xlShiftToRight): new B2:B3 take the formats of the cells to the left (fill, borders, General) and C2 (the shifted cell) keeps 0.00%.
Columns("C:C").Insert(): the new column takes the format of column B cell by cell (C1 bold/blue from the header, C2:C3 filled, bordered, 0.00%).
Answers to the PR's open question
Row 1 and column A: Rows("1:1").Insert() and Columns("A:A").Insert() give completely unformatted cells (no fill, no borders, General, not bold) even though the header or list is directly below or to the right. Excel does not take the format from the other side there, so "row 1 and column A store nothing" matches Excel.
Not checked: Insert Copied Cells from another sheet, Subtotal totals rows, the 1,000,000-cell cap, undo, XLSX round trip, anything in the Rust code.
@Harrison-Booth thank you for checking this in a real Excel, and for answering the open question about row 1 and column A.
Both differences you found are fixed in this push:
Borders at the outer edge of a block now follow what you saw: below the last row or right of the last column only the shared edge is kept, in the middle all four (b1a532a). Each of your four cases has its own engine test.
data.subtotal now bolds only the label cell of the total rows (3224cdc).
The two other differences you reported (a whole-row format with one cell set back to the default, and Insert Copied Cells from another sheet) are listed as limits in the description, with your results. The branch is also merged with current main.
Inserted rows, columns, and cells now inherit applicable formatting, including border adjustments. When the required style copies exceed 1,000,000 cells, formatting is skipped and the insert result reports the limit. Subtotal and grand-total rows bold only their label cells.
Helpers derive styles from the preceding row or column, account for inherited row or column styles, and adjust borders based on shared edges. Tests cover derived styles and border behavior.
Apply formatting during inserts crates/engine/src/cmd/sheet.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/ui-parity.md
Row, column, and cell insertions apply inherited styles and report when required style copies exceed the 1,000,000-cell limit. Tests cover insertion behavior, undo/redo, XLSX persistence, and the limit. The documentation records these rules.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8d1c7
These edge cases can make a column insert costly or give a partially inserted cell the wrong format. They warrant bounded fixes or owner acceptance, but do not establish a broad merge-blocking failure.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8d1c7
Formatting remains confined to the selected workbook, and normal validation and undo behavior are preserved. However, inserting beside a sparsely formatted column can trigger substantial processing before the formatting limit takes effect. The responsiveness impact has not been measured.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: A sparse workbook column carrying borders can make a subsequent column insertion derive styles across the entire worksheet height before the formatting cap is checked. The cap contains new cell assignments, not this preparatory CPU and allocation work. This creates an inferred availability risk in the executing application; its runtime severity and any shared-service exposure remain unproven.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated mutation scope is the selected sheet and its workbook-local style table. Resource pressure affects the application executing the command. No supplied deployment evidence establishes tenant, service, credential, or infrastructure exposure beyond that execution context.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A workbook author can supply sparse column formatting that becomes expensive when a user or automation subsequently inserts a neighboring column. The new path expands that metadata into sheet-height style derivations before deciding whether to skip assignments. Opening the file alone is not shown to trigger this insertion path, and denial of service was not measured.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Whole-line insertion retains bounds, sheet-protection, and push-off checks before mutation. Macro commands retain policy evaluation and filesystem sandboxing. The changed formatting helper introduces no separate principal or credential authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Macro step and elapsed-time checks occur between synchronous command executions, so they do not interrupt a single formatting scan. The WebAssembly clock reports no elapsed time. History trimming limits retained snapshots rather than the current command's preparatory allocation.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider caching derivations by source style, relevant far-side borders, and insertion axis, together with an explicit preparatory-work budget. Keep formatting-skip semantics distinct from a guarantee that the entire command is resource-bounded.

Memoize inserted_style by its (source, far) inputs.
For a column insert under a bordered whole-column style, across covers every row. The styled loop then calls inserted_style for each row. Each call clones the style and interns it through StyleTable::derive. Most rows share the same (source, far) pair, so most calls return the same result. Caching by pair removes the repeated derive calls. The loop still visits every row.

Preserve explicit default styles during partial-cell insertion.
When home.insertCells shifts cells down or right, format_same_as_before skips a stored source cell whose style is StyleId::DEFAULT. The new cell then keeps a non-default row or column style instead of preserving the source reset. The documented whole-line limitation can remain unchanged.

home.insertRows,home.insertColumnsandhome.insertCells(shift down or right) leave the new cells unformatted. Only the line settings of the row above or the column to the left were copied (LineInfo: height or width, whole-line style). Formats set on cells, which is how Excel, openpyxl and most generators store borders, fills and number formats, were lost: a row inserted into a bordered, filled list comes out as a white strip with no borders and General numbers, and an agent has to repair it cell by cell.Excel gives inserted cells the formats of the cells above or to the left by default ("Format Same As Above").
Range.Insert'sCopyOrigindefaults toxlFormatFromLeftOrAbove(https://learn.microsoft.com/office/vba/api/excel.range.insert), and the example on that page shows the default copies from a header row too: to take the row below instead you passxlFormatFromRightOrBelow. So this keeps the simple rule, header row included, with one exception for borders at the edge of a block (below). What changed
All in
crates/engine/src/cmd/sheet.rsandcrates/engine/src/cmd/data/grouping.rs, plus regression tests anddocs/ui-parity.md.New
format_same_as_before: gives every inserted cell the style of the cell before it across the insert, i.e. the row above for rows and for cells shifted down, the column to the left for columns and for cells shifted right. Only theStyleId: values, formulas, comments, hyperlinks and merges stay behind.insert_linescalls it after the existingLineInfocopy, over the whole row or column.insert_cellscalls it for the inserted block only (its columns for a shift down, its rows for a shift right).shift: row|columnalready goes throughinsert_lines.Row 1 and column A have nothing before them: inserts there store no format, the same as the existing
LineInfocopy. Excel does the same (checked, below).A new cell is stored only when the copied style differs from what its row or column format already gives it, so a whole-row format (a row style plus the same style on its cells) adds no cells.
The params text of the three commands says what the new cells take, since that is what agents read in
list_commands.Borders at the edge of a block (
inserted_style, added after @Harrison-Booth's Excel check below). Fill, number format, font and alignment are copied whole, as before. Borders follow this rule, for rows (the cell above is the source, the cell below the insert is the "far" cell) and the same way for columns (left source, right far cell):In the middle of a boxed list the far cell is the next list row, so all four borders are copied. Below the last row (or right of the last column) the far cell is empty, so only the shared edge is kept. A thick outer border on the right is not copied to a row inserted below the block.
data.subtotal: it inserts its total rows withhome.insertRows, so they take the fill, number format and borders of the row above, as in Excel. It used to make the whole total row bold; now only the label cell ("East Total", "Grand Total") is bold, and the amount cells are not. The grand total label is now bold too, as in Excel.Cost. If more than 1,000,000 stored cells would be needed, none of the cell-format copies are applied; the structural insert and copied
LineInfostill succeed. The command result then reports{"formattingSkipped":true,"formattingCellLimit":1000000}. Below the cap the existing null result is preserved. The border rule reads one more style per source cell (the far cell) and derives styles through the style table, so the same cells are stored as before.Checked in Excel
