While a text field had focus, native Undo/Redo edited that field but displayed project-history labels such as “Can’t Undo” or “Undo Move Layer.” Use localized plain Undo/Redo labels while typing, then restore project-history labels when focus leaves.

Follow-up to #2459.

Validation (prior Linux results):

  • Native-menu unit suite: 12 passed.
  • Existing docked/floating-window text-edit interaction tests: 2 passed.
  • English/Japanese menu-model labels were inspected through focus and focus release.
  • Strict UI-crate Clippy with all targets, formatting, dependency layers, and asset attribution passed.

Local verification: fetched and verified the expected branch head; reviewed the diff against upstream main and passed git diff --check. No code changes or test reruns. The macOS native menu backend and full local CI were not run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Undo and Redo now show localized, plain labels while a text field has keyboard focus, rather than project-history labels.
    • Text-editing commands remain enabled and available while a text field is focused. When focus leaves the field, Undo and Redo return to their normal project-history labels.

Walkthrough

When a text field has focus, the native Edit menu enables recognized text-editing commands and shows localized Undo and Redo labels. When focus leaves, the menu restores the history labels. A test checks these states in English and Japanese.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/native_menu.rs: build_now now passes the app into the recursive enable helper. For Edit commands recognized by edits_text, it enables the item; for Undo and Redo, it also replaces the history label with the localized plain label. Other matching Edit items retain their existing labels.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/native_menu.rs: Added a test that checks English and Japanese Undo/Redo history labels become plain localized labels, and the items are enabled, while a text field has focus; after focus leaves, the history labels return.

Explanation

The title names the main change: while a text field has focus, the native Edit menu shows plain Undo and Redo labels. The raw summary confirms that build_now makes this change in crates/ui-egui/src/native_menu.rs, and the objectives describe the same behavior. The title is specific, short, and accurate, so it passes.

Add label assertions for the focused Edit ▸ Undo and Redo items.

build_now replaces the Undo and Redo labels with crate::i18n::label(app, ...) while a text field has keyboard focus (crates/ui-egui/src/native_menu.rs:140-141, 154). The existing native-menu tests in crates/ui-egui/tests/it/native_menu_text_keys.rs assert only the project-search state after edit.undo and edit.redo run. They do not assert the label strings. The only label assertion nearby uses build() and checks file.openRecent. A regression in the focused label path, such as swapped sources, a dropped label() call, or a wrong command ID, would not fail these tests.

Add a focused-menu assertion for the Undo and Redo labels. Cover the English fallback ("Undo" and "Redo") and at least one localized catalog language. Assert the labels from the menu that build_now returns while the text-field gate holds.

Thanks @nanox333! The change looks right. Could you add a regression test to the native-menu unit suite: with a focused text field, build_now labels edit.undo / edit.redo as plain "Undo" / "Redo", and the history labels come back after focus leaves? Note that the strict clippy rules (#2496) are now on main.

Added a_focused_text_field_gets_plain_undo_and_redo_labels to the native-menu unit tests (6a8e281). With a focused text field, build_now labels edit.undo / edit.redo as plain "Undo" / "Redo" and keeps them enabled. After focus leaves, the history labels come back. cargo test -p effectcraft-ui-egui --lib native_menu, cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -p effectcraft-ui-egui --lib --tests -- -D warnings pass. This branch is still on the pre-#2491 layout; I haven't merged main into it.

Extended the focused native-menu regression in c9688ef.

It now covers both English and Japanese: focused text fields get the localized plain Undo/Redo labels, both actions stay enabled, and the project-history labels return after focus leaves.

Local validation on Windows: all 13 native-menu unit tests passed; strict UI-crate Clippy (lib/tests, --no-deps, -D warnings), formatting, and git diff --check passed. These checks cover the menu model; the macOS native menu backend and full cargo xtask ci were not run.

Merged, thank you @nanox333! It landed on main with a batch of community PRs, after a full workspace build and test run on Windows against the refactored main (fmt, strict clippy, about 4,100 tests, layers, assets and wasm).
