This adds apps/effectcraft-android: a Gradle project that hosts the existing egui UI inside an android-activity window and fills EffectCraft's Hooks with Android equivalents. The engine, the UI, the theme and the command table are unchanged; apps/effectcraft is not compiled.
What the shell does
Entry point and storage — builds as libmain.so, loaded with System.loadLibrary. $HOME is set to AndroidApp::internal_data_path(), so the app's own config_dir() resolves to <files>/.config/effectcraft (settings, autosave, plugins).
File pickers — ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT through the Activity; picked footage is copied into <filesDir>/import/ and imported with the app's own file.import/file.open commands. Saves and renders write to <files>/exports/ first and are published to the ACTION_CREATE_DOCUMENT destination once the file stops growing; cancelling leaves the render in exports/.
Phone workspace — phone_layout() installs a "Phone" workspace in the app's own dock model (Composition above, Timeline below, Project/Effect Controls as tabs) and adds it to saved_workspaces, so Window ▸ Workspace can switch away and back. Hit targets go to 40 pt.
Command palette — long-press the top 8% for 500 ms. File commands go through the app's own ui.menu.invoke dispatcher (which calls Hooks, then the same engine command); everything else goes to engine.execute.
Fonts — the system CJK face is copied into $HOME/.fonts/ so EffectCraft's own scanner finds it, and appended to every family after the theme is live as a second line of defence.
GPU — the app's GpuFailureBridge is installed unchanged: a lost device or uncaught GPU error is reported in the UI and the compositor falls back to the CPU instead of crashing.
Self-test — a background thread decodes an embedded 320×240 H.264 clip and renders a frame through the app's own render queue.
What is deliberately not here
No port-specific configuration: no release repository, feed or version override is part of this change.
Known gaps: audio output is not wired (audio_device: None, so previews play silently instead of failing), the system clipboard is not wired, folder questions answer with the app's own exports/, and plugins that need a real filesystem picker get that directory.
Open questions for maintainers
Is an Android target something you want in-tree, or would you rather keep it as a separate fork? If the latter, close this and we will keep maintaining it downstream.
The entry point needs #[unsafe(no_mangle)], and the Storage Access Framework bridge needs JObject::from_raw/JavaVM::from_raw. The crate follows crates/platform's precedent: unsafe_code = "deny" with #[allow(unsafe_code)] on those items only, each with a SAFETY: note. Would you accept that, or would you rather the Android shell stay outside the workspace?
The APK is not published anywhere by this PR; it only makes the target buildable.
Happy to reshape any of this.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an Android version of EffectCraft with a phone-focused workspace, touch-friendly controls, media import and export, and support for opening links.
Added Android launcher icons and a startup self-test for media handling.
Documentation
Added Android setup and build guidance, plus attribution details for included icons and test assets.
Chores
Added Android build configuration and excluded generated build files from version control.
Adds `apps/effectcraft-android`, a Gradle project that hosts the existing egui UI inside an
`android-activity` window and fills EffectCraft's `Hooks` with Android equivalents.
What the shell does:
- Builds the Rust crate as `libmain.so` and loads it through `System.loadLibrary`.
- `$HOME` is set to the app's private data directory, so the app's own `config_dir()` (settings,
autosave, plugins) works unchanged.
- File pickers: the Storage Access Framework imports picked footage with the app's own commands;
saves and renders go to a scratch directory and are published once complete.
- A "Phone" workspace installed through the app's own dock model, a long-press command palette, 40 pt
hit targets after the theme, and the system CJK face made visible to the app's font scanner.
- The app's `GpuFailureBridge` is installed unchanged, and a start-up self-test decodes and renders an
embedded clip.
Deliberately not included: any port-specific configuration. No release repository, feed or version
override is part of this change, so it only makes the target buildable.
The APK is not published anywhere by this change.
This pull request adds an Android app for EffectCraft, including its Gradle project, Android activity, Rust application shell, and Java-to-Rust document-picker bridge. It also adds Android-specific UI setup, launcher resources, and a startup media self-test.
Connects Android activity results and Java SAF operations to Rust media-selection and export hooks. Imports copy selected documents to app storage and pass their paths through a manifest.
Android UI and startup integration apps/effectcraft-android/src/lib.rs, apps/effectcraft-android/README.md
Adds touch-target and font setup, a long-press command palette, a Phone workspace, Android host hooks, and startup and export handling.
Startup media self-test apps/effectcraft-android/src/selftest.rs, apps/effectcraft-android/assets/*
Adds startup checks that probe and decode embedded media, import a clip, and render a composition. Adds fixture attribution metadata.
Overlapping saves on Android can fail to publish or write one export to the wrong destination, and imported file names from a document provider are not sanitized. Fix both before merging; the palette language issue is a minor follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 75046
The Android shell adds meaningful file-handling risk: a selected document provider can supply a name that escapes the import folder, and overlapping exports can lose the association between content and its chosen destination. Explicit document selection and Android sandboxing limit the exposure.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new import bridge uses a document provider's DISPLAY_NAME as a filesystem path without enforcing import-directory containment. Traversal can create attacker-chosen files outside import in existing app-writable directories. Collision renaming limits ordinary overwrites but does not restore the storage boundary.
Medium · security · inferred: Export destinations are stored in one global saveUri rather than bound to individual output operations. Selecting destinations for queued outputs A and B starts independent publishers while replacing the same slot; A can later publish its content to B's selected document or provider. Cancellation and late picker results also modify this shared authority.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The traversal attack requires a provider-controlled document selected through the picker. Its maximum filesystem authority is that of the EffectCraft app process, not the whole device. The demonstrated primitive is out-of-import file creation in existing writable directories; collision checks constrain straightforward replacement of existing files. No cross-app access or executable-payload activation was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained path-traversal finding crosses the provider-metadata trust boundary: DISPLAY_NAME flows unchanged into new File(dir, name), followed by FileOutputStream. Only the fallback URI-segment branch replaces separators; neither branch verifies canonical containment before writing.
inferred — The export issue is destination confusion, not an arbitrary URI-permission bypass. Multiple output selections are permitted before rendering begins, but their publishers share the latest selected URI. This can send one output's content to a document or provider selected for another output, violating the user's content-to-destination choice.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Document acquisition is explicitly system-picker mediated, and MainActivity accepts document results only for the two bridge request codes, passing null on unsuccessful results. The exported launcher does not itself consume incoming document payloads. These controls reduce unsolicited reachability but do not validate provider metadata or bind destination grants to individual export operations.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Export completion is inferred from nonzero size remaining stable for 1.5 seconds, rather than an explicit producer completion signal. Picker timeout returns without cancelling the Java operation. Publication clears the shared URI before copying directly to the destination; failure returns false without destination rollback. Scratch retention preserves a local source, but does not reconcile late results or partially written destination documents.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Keep provider display names as metadata. Allocate import filenames within app-controlled storage, enforce canonical containment, and use atomic exclusive creation rather than relying on an existence check followed by opening the path.
proposed — Represent each document transfer as an identified operation with its own scratch path, destination and terminal state. Bind publication to producer completion, reject stale picker results, and define cancellation, timeout and partial-destination recovery behavior; serialization can provide a simpler initial ownership guarantee.

Explanation
The title "Add an Android app shell" matches the main change. The PR adds apps/effectcraft-android, a Gradle project that hosts the existing egui UI in an Android activity and supplies Android Hooks implementations. The title is short, specific, and uses the term the PR objectives use. It does not cover details such as SAF import, the Phone workspace, or the self-test, which is expected for a title.

Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Heavy lift
Use per-request save state: one global saveUri slot can send a file to the wrong destination.
pickSave() resets the static saveUri/saveDone. publish() consumes saveUri later, after the Rust side has waited for the scratch file to stop growing. That wait can last up to 900 s in spawn_publish.
Failure path:
Save A gets its destination. Its render continues.
The user starts save B. pickSave() clears saveUri.
A's publish() then reads null and returns false, or reads B's URI. A's file is then written to B's chosen destination.
B's later publish() can find the slot already spent.
Return the chosen URI to Rust right after pick_save succeeds (for example through a safTakeSaveUri() instance method). Pass it back in publish(uri, path). This keeps each save bound to its own destination.

Path Traversal
Reachability: External Exploitability: Difficult CWE:CWE-22 — Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')
Sanitize the provider-supplied display name before building the destination path.
displayName() returns OpenableColumns.DISPLAY_NAME exactly as the document provider reports it. copyTo() passes that value to new File(dir, name) and opens a FileOutputStream on the result.
Source: a third-party DocumentsProvider that the user picks from. It can return a name such as ../.config/effectcraft/plugins/x.wasm.
Control: none. Only the / replacement in the getLastPathSegment() fallback exists, and the display-name branch skips it.
Sink: the file is created outside <filesDir>/import/, inside the app's private storage.
Outcome: the provider can plant files in other app folders, such as the config or plug-in folders under <filesDir>/.config/effectcraft.
The exists() loop does not prevent this, because it only renames on collision. Strip the name to its leaf before use.

Localize the command palette labels.
The Android palette uses Chinese literals while the shell and status text are English. The shared language setting does not apply to this separate palette. English-locale users can still click the buttons, but cannot reliably identify the commands from their labels.
Use English labels at minimum. A direct catalog lookup by command ID is not feasible from this crate because the catalog uses (command, English label) and its lookup API is pub(crate).

Thank you @tzhazuma for the Android work! I can't merge it as designed. The workspace forbids unsafe (AGENTS.md 'Never crash'), and this needs it (#[allow(unsafe_code)] in src/lib.rs and src/saf.rs). It also commits a binary gradle-wrapper.jar, embeds a test MP4 and PNG (one sidecar names the wrong asset), lacks [lints] workspace = true, and predates the new module layout and strict clippy (#2491, #2496). An Android port would need a design without unsafe in this repo; please open an issue to discuss one. If you are not on our Discord yet, please join us: https://discord.gg/artcraft
