What happens today

FreeBSD aarch64 was dropped from releases because the emulated aarch64 VM took over 5 hours. storytold/craft-common-actions#50 now cross-compiles aarch64 inside the KVM-accelerated x86_64 FreeBSD VM, opt-in through the freebsd-architectures input of release.yml. Its cross toolchain step exports CARGO_BUILD_TARGET=aarch64-unknown-freebsd before packaging/freebsd/package.sh runs. With aarch64 turned on, this app's script would:

  • name the archive after uname -m, which is always amd64 in the guest, so the release job fails its archive-name check;
  • read the binaries from $CARGO_TARGET_DIR/release, but cargo writes a cross build to $CARGO_TARGET_DIR/aarch64-unknown-freebsd/release;
  • run the packaged binary with --version, and an aarch64 binary cannot run in the x86_64 guest (Exec format error, exit 126), which stops the script under set -e.

Change

packaging/freebsd/package.sh only:

  • the arch comes from CARGO_BUILD_TARGET when it is set (aarch64-unknown-freebsd → aarch64, x86_64-unknown-freebsd → x86_64), else from uname -m as before;
  • a target other than aarch64-unknown-freebsd or x86_64-unknown-freebsd (a Linux or macOS triple, a bare arch, another FreeBSD triple) is refused with exit 2, and the target is read before uname -m, so an unsupported host does not block a valid cross build;
  • binaries are read from $CARGO_TARGET_DIR/${CARGO_BUILD_TARGET:+$CARGO_BUILD_TARGET/}release;
  • the --version run is skipped, with a message, when the package is for another architecture than the machine; file(1) must then report each staged binary as a FreeBSD ELF executable for the target architecture (an executable or PIE; libraries, object files and core files are refused). A FreeBSD target built on another OS (say an x86_64 Mac with x86_64-unknown-freebsd) also takes this path, since matching architectures do not make the binary runnable there (a --dry-run still runs its stubs).

Without CARGO_BUILD_TARGET the script behaves exactly as before, so x86_64 releases are unchanged. This PR does not opt the app into aarch64: that is a one-line freebsd-architectures: '["x86_64","aarch64"]' in the release caller, to do once this is merged.

strip is safe on the aarch64 binaries: FreeBSD 15.1's /usr/bin/strip is llvm-strip, which strips other-architecture ELFs. Tested in a FreeBSD 15.1 VM: it stripped a foreign-arch executable with exit 0 (the call keeps its || true anyway).

Testing

On macOS, with a uname shim that reports an amd64 FreeBSD guest:

  • --dry-run: output identical to main for the amd64 guest, for the Mac host, and with CARGO_BUILD_TARGET=x86_64-unknown-freebsd. With CARGO_BUILD_TARGET=aarch64-unknown-freebsd it writes effectcraft-<version>-freebsd-aarch64.tar.gz and exits 0.
  • --skip-build with stub binaries in target/release and target/aarch64-unknown-freebsd/release: with no target set, the log, archive name and archive contents are identical to main (effectcraft-<version>-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz). With the aarch64 target set, it writes …-freebsd-aarch64.tar.gz holding the binaries from target/aarch64-unknown-freebsd/release and skips the --version run, exit 0.
  • After review: CARGO_BUILD_TARGET=aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu is refused (exit 2); a riscv64 host with the aarch64 target still packages it; with the target set, FreeBSD aarch64 ELF stub binaries pass and shell-script stubs are rejected (is not a FreeBSD aarch64 executable). The executable check was verified against file 5.46 on FreeBSD 15.1 aarch64: /bin/sh and /rescue/sh pass; libc.so.7 (also at mode 755), a .o and a core file are refused. On an arm64 Mac (real uname) with CARGO_BUILD_TARGET=aarch64-unknown-freebsd, the scripts skip --version ("does not run on this Darwin aarch64 machine") and exit 0.
  • shellcheck -x clean.

Not tested: a real aarch64 release build of this app in CI. It needs the release caller opted in.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • FreeBSD packages built for a supported target architecture now use the matching architecture label and locate the CLI binary in the correct build directory. Unsupported architectures and targets are rejected.
    • Cross-target packages are checked for the expected FreeBSD executable format without attempting to run their binaries. Dry runs and builds matching the host architecture continue to verify the CLI version.

The release workflow now cross-compiles FreeBSD aarch64 inside the x86_64 VM
(storytold/craft-common-actions#50) and sets CARGO_BUILD_TARGET=aarch64-unknown-freebsd.
package.sh now reads the binaries from target/<triple>/release when CARGO_BUILD_TARGET
is set, names the archive after the target instead of uname -m, and skips the --version
run when the binary is for another architecture than the machine. x86_64 packages are
unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The FreeBSD packaging script selects the package architecture and binary directory from CARGO_BUILD_TARGET when set. For cross-architecture packages, it validates staged binaries without running the CLI version check.

Changes: FreeBSD packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cross-target packaging
packaging/freebsd/package.sh
The script maps supported architectures from the FreeBSD target triple and locates binaries in the target-specific directory. For dry runs or matching host and target architectures, it runs the CLI version check. Otherwise, it checks staged binaries for a FreeBSD executable with the expected architecture.

Possibly related issues

  • storytold/craft-common-actions 39: The packaging change supports cross-compilation for FreeBSD aarch64, but does not change the release workflow.
  • storytold/cadcraft 1768: The change adds target-specific FreeBSD aarch64 packaging, but does not confirm that the stalled release job completes.
  • storytold/craft-common-actions 60: The packaging change supports the FreeBSD aarch64 cross-packaging path, but does not change the release caller or CI schedule.

Suggested reviewers: echelon

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 74b9b

The packaging flow has no identified merge-blocking risk and is suitable to merge with normal validation.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 74b9b

The change is narrowly scoped and restricts target selection to two supported FreeBSD architectures. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Release-workflow isolation and failure-gated publication remain unverified, so the assessment retains limited uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected security scope is the packaging process, its staging files and the resulting FreeBSD release archive. Broader distribution exposure cannot be established without the external publication workflow.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The changed input is a build-environment target, not a new network entrypoint. Its allowlist prevents arbitrary target strings from entering the artifact-path component. Cross-target binaries are not executed by the new validation branch, but format inspection does not establish their provenance or trustworthiness.

Explanation

The title names the main change: packaging the FreeBSD aarch64 cross build in packaging/freebsd/package.sh. The raw summary and PR objectives both center on aarch64 cross-build support, with CARGO_BUILD_TARGET-driven architecture selection and target-specific binary lookup. The parenthetical reference (craft-common-actions#39) is an external issue reference and does not describe the code change, but it does not make the title misleading. The title is specific and readable. It is 66 characters, slightly longer than ideal, which is acceptable.

Review follow-up. CARGO_BUILD_TARGET must now be a *-unknown-freebsd triple, so a Linux or macOS
target can no longer be packaged under a FreeBSD name, and it is read before uname -m, so an
unsupported host does not block a valid cross build. When the binaries are for another
architecture and cannot run --version, file(1) must report each as a FreeBSD ELF executable
for the target architecture.

Review follow-up. The file(1) check for binaries that cannot run here now needs an executable
(file says "executable" or "pie executable") or an ELF with an interpreter, which is how an older
file(1) still shows a PIE it calls a shared object. FreeBSD libraries, object files and core files
for the target architecture are refused.

Part of storytold/craft-common-actions#39.
Review follow-up. With CARGO_BUILD_TARGET set on a host that is not FreeBSD (say an x86_64 Mac
building x86_64-unknown-freebsd), the architectures match but the binary still cannot run, so
the --version run is skipped there and the file(1) check is used instead.

Part of storytold/craft-common-actions#39.
Review follow-up. CARGO_BUILD_TARGET must be aarch64-unknown-freebsd or x86_64-unknown-freebsd,
the two the release builds; anything else, including made-up triples such as
aarch64-foo-unknown-freebsd, stops with exit 2.

Part of storytold/craft-common-actions#39.
Resolves the package.sh conflicts with main's SonarCloud cleanup: the cross-build changes are kept
and use main's style, with [[ ]] tests and release_arch taking its argument as a named local and
ending in an explicit return.

Hi @zuujiscom, thanks for this PR! main has changed a lot since it was opened, and it now conflicts with main, so it needs a rebase before we can review it for merging.

When you rebase, please also make sure it fits the other recent changes:

CI (cargo xtask ci) now runs on PRs. Once it's green on the rebased branch, we'll take a look. Thank you!

Closing: main now does this in #2555 (the arch comes from CARGO_BUILD_TARGET and the --version run is skipped for cross builds). Thanks for the reviews.
