Problem

#27 made scripts that nest brackets too deeply return an error, so they no longer overflow the stack. The check only counts brackets, though. Many constructs make boa's parser recurse without any bracket, and two ways of compiling code at run time skip the check altogether. In both cases the script thread overflows its stack, and the whole process aborts: catch_unwind can't catch a stack overflow, so unsaved work is lost.

Each of these aborts effectcraft-cli --empty script x.jsx on main, and the app does the same from File ▸ Scripts or the Script Console:

Script Result on main
x => × 20 000, then 1 thread 'script-1' has overflowed its stack, SIGABRT
if (1) × 100 000, then 1 same
1 ? × 100 000 … : 1 × 100 000 same
2 ** , 1 || , x = × 100 000 same
! × 200 000, typeof / void × 100 000 same
100 000 labels, while (0) × 100 000 same
eval(Array(100001).join('(') + '1' + …) same: eval never runs the check
new Function(Array(100001).join('[')) same

Expressions are not affected. effectcraft_expr::rewrite::check_nesting already estimates the parser's stack use for every one of these constructs, and the same patterns in a layer expression return an error.

Fix

  • effectcraft-expr: the stack estimate (too_nested_from) now takes Weights: its budget and what binary operators, member accesses or calls, and comma operators cost. With lists, the commas of object literals and of argument and parameter lists cost nothing, because the parser reads those in a loop. Expressions keep their weights. The new pub fn nests_deeper_than(code, weights) runs the estimate on plain JavaScript, without the expression rewrite.
  • effectcraft-script: check_nesting keeps its bracket count, with the same message, and then runs nests_deeper_than with weights calibrated against a release build (see the review thread for the measurements). Each construct gets at least twice the headroom before the point where it crashes on the Script Console's 8 MiB stack. effectcraft-expr moves from [dev-dependencies] to [dependencies] (L4 → L3; cargo xtask layers passes).
  • effectcraft-script: scripts' boa contexts get a HostHooks whose ensure_can_compile_strings runs check_nesting on the code passed to eval, Function, GeneratorFunction and AsyncFunction. Function's parameters are checked joined with commas, the way boa parses them. Code that is too deep throws a catchable RangeError instead of reaching the parser.

Tests

  • nesting_without_brackets_is_an_error_not_a_stack_overflow: every construct in the table returns "nested too deeply". Each one aborted the test process before this change. Long + and member chains, and comma operators in shapes that could pass for a list, are refused too. Ordinary code still runs on an 8 MiB thread: a 6000-key object literal, eval('(' + json + ')') of it, a 6000-term concatenation, 20 000 arguments and 20 000 array items, 40 chained arrows and a 200-branch else if chain.
  • code_compiled_at_run_time_is_checked_too: deep eval / new Function code returns the error, and ordinary eval('1 + 1') and new Function('a', 'return a * 2') still work.
  • I ran both new tests against main's code, with only the tests added. Both abort with overflowed its stack.
  • cargo test -p effectcraft-script -p effectcraft-expr: 115 + 120 tests pass. cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings, cargo fmt --check and cargo xtask layers also pass on both crates. I didn't run the full cargo xtask ci: building the whole workspace runs out of memory on my 14 GB laptop.

Not covered

Some stack overflows happen while boa runs a script, not while it parses one, so no source check can catch them. Examples are JSON.stringify or String() on an array nested a million deep (for (…) a = [a]), and a long chain of Proxy objects. Fixing those needs a recursion limit in boa itself. I can open a separate issue for them if that helps.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of excessively nested JavaScript across expressions, statements, bracket groups, and template substitutions.
    • Applied nesting checks consistently to dynamically evaluated code and functions created at runtime.
    • Code that exceeds the nesting limits now produces a range error, while code within the limits continues to run.
  • New Features
    • Added configurable nesting checks that account for operator chains, property access, and comma-separated lists.

…urn an error

The script nesting guard (storytold#27) counted brackets only. Chains of `=>`, `?:`, `**`, `||`,
assignments, prefix operators, labels and brace-less `if`/`while` made boa's parser recurse
just as deep and overflow the script thread's stack, aborting the process. `eval` and
`new Function` skipped the guard altogether.

- expr: `nests_deeper_than(code, levels)` runs the expressions' stack estimate with a given
  budget, without the expression rewrite.
- script: `check_nesting` runs it after the bracket count, at a quarter more than
  MAX_NESTING so code at the bracket limit still passes.
- script: a HostHooks::ensure_can_compile_strings hook checks code compiled at run time
  (eval, Function, GeneratorFunction, AsyncFunction) and throws a RangeError instead.

Regression tests cover every construct; each overflowed the stack before this change.

📝 Walkthrough

The expression crate adds configurable nesting analysis. The script runtime applies bracket-depth and weighted nesting checks to script code and code compiled through runtime facilities.

Changes: Runtime nesting validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configurable nesting analysis
crates/expr/src/rewrite.rs
The expression crate exposes Weights and nests_deeper_than. The estimator classifies bracket groups, applies configured costs to operators, accesses, and commas, and passes the active weights into template-substitution checks.
Runtime nesting limits
crates/script/src/runtime.rs
The runtime keeps its existing bracket-depth check and adds a weighted nesting limit. Tests cover long operator chains, statements, assignments, comma constructs, and code within the limits.
Dynamic compilation checks
crates/script/Cargo.toml, crates/script/src/runtime.rs
The script crate moves effectcraft-expr to regular dependencies. Boa host hooks check function parameters and bodies before string compilation. Tests cover nested and ordinary code passed through eval and new Function.

Possibly related issues

  • Issue F-04: The reported eval and Function nesting-guard bypass is addressed by checks on dynamically compiled parameters and bodies.

Suggested reviewers: echelon

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f1414

The new nesting limit can still be bypassed by an optional computed access containing a long comma expression, or by newline-separated nested if statements. Such scripts could still overflow the parser's stack and abort the process instead of returning an error. Both fixes are small and should be made before merging if the goal is that scripts never crash.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f1414

The change strengthens protection against scripts crashing the application without expanding script permissions. Remaining estimator blind spots and unverified platform-specific stack margins mean it should not be treated as complete crash isolation.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant attacker-controlled inputs are executed script source and strings supplied to runtime compilation. The failure-containment objective is protecting the host application process from parser stack exhaustion; the supplied evidence does not establish a remotely reachable or multi-tenant exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Residual undercounting remains: newline-separated nested control headers can reset accumulated chain cost, and optional computed access can classify its index as a comma-exempt list. These inputs were already admitted by the base script guard, while the expression estimator already contained the corresponding reset and bracket exemption. They are not established PR regressions, and process-abort behavior was not reproduced in this review.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Script contexts install the validation hook centrally. Persistent console contexts and fresh inline contexts use that factory, so runtime compilation inherits the control rather than relying only on validation of the original script text.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The validation adapter introduces no shared-state reservation or partial commit: it either returns success or a normal JavaScript error before compilation. Its protection nevertheless depends on a heuristic cost model whose documented script budget was calibrated for an 8 MiB stack, not a demonstrated universal stack bound.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For stronger crash-containment assurance, make estimator accounting preserve nested control-body cost across newlines, distinguish optional computed indices from lists, and validate rejection margins against supported execution-stack configurations.

Make template-substitution scanning regex-aware.

skip_template and substitutions treat the } in /}/ as the end of ${...}. Therefore valid Boa code such as `${/}/.test(0) || 1 || ... || 1}` is tokenized as one template, while substitutions extracts only /. The || chain never receives an estimate.

The script bracket scan also skips the complete template. A sufficiently long chain can pass the 120-level guard and reach Boa's recursive parser. Put regex-aware delimiter scanning in a shared helper used by both skip_template and substitutions.

Agreed, this is a real gap, but it was already on main. skip_template and substitutions also drive the expression rewrite for every layer expression, so I would rather make them regex-aware in a separate PR with its own tests than fold it into this one.

@simeulinuxkaliaiwr Agreed. A separate PR with dedicated tests makes sense because these helpers also affect expression rewriting. This remains a valid gap, but I accept deferring it rather than expanding this PR.

Guarding the script parser against deep nesting is worth doing, @simeulinuxkaliaiwr, and the bracket and eval cases you cover are real. The budget is a bit too eager, though: it charges every object-literal comma and every binary operator, so the limit lands around 5,100 links and scripts that run fine on main are now refused as "nested too deeply". Three examples: a 6000-key object literal, eval('(' + json + ')') of one (ExtendScript's usual way to read JSON), and a 6000-term string concatenation. Could the budget count only real nesting depth (open brackets, parentheses and nested expressions), not siblings at the same level? Separately, CodeRabbit's template-literal-plus-regex case still overflows the stack on this branch. That was already possible on main, so it doesn't need to block this PR, but a test for it would be welcome if the depth change covers it.

…e build

Review of storytold#1993: the estimate charged object-literal keys, arguments and every binary
operator like the expressions do, refusing scripts that run fine (a 6000-key object
literal, eval of one as JSON, a 6000-term concatenation).

- expr: `Weights` sets the estimate's budget and what binary operators, member
  accesses/calls and comma operators cost; with `lists`, the commas of object literals,
  argument and parameter lists (read in a loop by the parser, never an overflow) cost
  nothing. Brackets after a value, an `if (…)`-style header or a block are told apart, so
  a comma operator can't pass as a list. Expressions keep their weights.
- script: weights from where boa overflows on a release build, scaled to the Script
  Console's 8 MiB stack (about 2 400 `=>`, 4 900 comma operators, 15 000 member accesses,
  15 000 to 30 000 binary operators), each allowed at least twice less.
- script: Function's parameters are checked joined with commas, as boa parses them.

Tests: the reviewer's three scripts, 20 000 arguments and array items run on an 8 MiB
thread; long concatenations, member chains and comma operators in the shapes a list could
be mistaken for are refused; so are three parameters nesting 240 deep together.

Thanks @skylartaylor, you're right. Before changing anything, I measured where boa actually overflows. These are the counts at which each construct overflows, scaled to the Script Console's 8 MiB stack. "Release" means the release CLI's 64 MiB script thread scaled down to 8 MiB. "Test profile" means a probe thread in a test build.

Construct Release (scaled) Test profile, 8 MiB
object-literal keys, call arguments never (1 000 000 fine) never
=> chain ~2 400 ~3 000
|| chain ~4 350 ~3 840
comma operator (1, 1, …) ~4 900 ~9 100
member access o.x.x… ~15 600 ~15 600
+ chain 15 600 to 31 000 ~37 900

So lists should cost nothing. Chains still need a limit, but a much looser one, and the comma operator needs a tighter one than I'd guessed: release uses almost twice the stack per comma that the test build does.

f14144f changes the estimate:

  • Lists are free for scripts. Commas in object literals, argument lists and parameter lists cost nothing, like array items already did. The check is token-based. ( counts as a call only after a value, and not after an if (…)-style header or a block's }. [ counts as an array literal only when it doesn't follow a value. { counts as an object literal only where an operand is expected. This way a comma operator can't pass as a list (if (1) (1, 1, …), {} (1, 1, …), a[1, 1, …] and { 1, 1, … } are tested).
  • Per-construct weights for scripts, calibrated on the release numbers above. Each construct gets at least twice the headroom: 7 680 binary operators, 5 120 member accesses or calls, 1 920 comma operators, and 960 =>/?:/||/brace-less if links. Expressions keep their weights unchanged, so their tests are untouched.

Your three examples are now tests that must run on an 8 MiB thread: the 6000-key object literal, eval('(' + json + ')') of it, and the 6000-term concatenation. 20 000 arguments and 20 000 array items are tested the same way. Chains past the limits are still refused before parsing. 115 + 120 tests pass, as do clippy -D warnings and fmt.

I also took CodeRabbit's Function parameter point: the parameters are now checked joined with commas, the way boa parses them.

The template-literal-plus-regex case isn't covered by this change. Fixing it means making skip_template and substitutions regex-aware. Those also drive the expression rewrite for every layer expression, so I'd rather do that in a separate PR with its own tests. I can open an issue for it.

<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 months ago; Pointer member access expressions are those using a `->` instead of a `.` and their semantics are exactly what would result from first dereferencing the expression preceding the `->` and then forming a member access expression using a `. ... * Then, if necessary, instance binding is performed to locate the member subobject corresponding to a field name or to build a bound method object, producing the result of the member access expression. ... Since we have decided to forbid specialization of class templates, see proposal #2200: Template generics, the compiler can assume the body of a templated class will be the same for all argument values:
This document must be updated to reflect those changes.

A qualified name is a word that is preceded by a period or a rightward arrow. The name is found within a contextually determined entity:

  * In a member access expression, this is the entity preceding the period.
  * In a pointer member access expression, this is the entity pointed to by the pointer preceding the rightward arrow.
  * For a designator in a struct literal, the name is introduced as a member of the struct type.

A member access expression allows a member of a value, type, interface, namespace, and so on to be accessed by specifying a qualified name for the member.

A member access expression is either a simple member access expression of the form:

  * member-access-expression ::= expression `.` word
  * member-access-expression ::= expression `->` word
  * member-access-expression ::= expression `.` integer-literal
  * member-access-expression ::= expression `->` integer-literal

or a compound member access of the form:

  * member-access-expression ::= expression `.` `(` expression `)`
This is in contrast to C++, which uses `::` for types and namespaces.

Pointer member access expressions are those using a `->` instead of a `.` and their semantics are exactly what would result from first dereferencing the expression preceding the `->` and then forming a member access expression using a `.`. For example, a simple pointer member access expression expression `->` word becomes `(` `*` expression `)` `.` word. More details on this syntax and semantics can be found in the pointers design. The rest of this document describes the semantics using `.` alone for simplicity.

A member access expression is processed using the following steps:

  * First, the member name to the right of the `.` is resolved to a specific member entity, called `M` in this document.
  * Then, if necessary, `impl` lookup is performed to map from a member of an interface to a member of the relevant `impl`, potentially updating `M`.
  * Then, if necessary, instance binding is performed to locate the member subobject corresponding to a field name or to build a bound method object, producing the result of the member access expression.
  * If instance binding is not performed, the result is `M`.

# Expressions

## OptionalMemberExpression

    interface OptionalMemberExpression <: Expression {
      type: "OptionalMemberExpression";
      object: Expression;
      property: Expression;
      computed: boolean;
      optional: boolean;
    }

## OptionalCallExpression

    interface OptionalCallExpression <: Expression {
      type: "OptionalCallExpression";
      callee: Expression;
      arguments: [ Expression | SpreadElement ];
      optional: boolean;
    }

The `Optional(Call|Member)Expression` aligns to the `OptionalChain` production. When `optional` is `true`, the property/arguments must follow a `?.` token. Any member/call in the optional chain is considered optional call or optional member. That said, if a node is `Optional(Call|Member)Expression`, there must exist a `Optional(Call|Member)Expression[optional=true]` to its left that starts this optional chain.

## Examples:

`computed` property is always `false` in the following examples. </excerpt>

# Expressions

## OptionalMemberExpression

    interface OptionalMemberExpression <: Expression {
      type: "OptionalMemberExpression";
      object: Expression;
      property: Expression;
      computed: boolean;
      optional: boolean;
    }

## OptionalCallExpression

    interface OptionalCallExpression <: Expression {
      type: "OptionalCallExpression";
      callee: Expression;
      arguments: [ Expression | SpreadElement ];
      optional: boolean;
    }

</excerpt>

Count commas inside optional computed accesses.

For obj?.[0, 0, …], opens_list classifies [ as a list because ?. is not treated as a value. too_nested_from therefore gives the commas inside the computed-access expression zero cost. The bracket check counts only the single bracket pair, so a long comma expression can reach Boa without the intended nesting rejection.

Classify ?.[ as an index expression:

?.( does not have the same issue. The current ( branch does not classify ?.( as a list, so its argument commas already incur the configured comma cost. Do not change that branch.

Review comment at @crates/expr/src/rewrite.rs at line 719:
Update the `opens_list` classification for `[` so optional computed access `?.[`
is treated as an index expression, not a list. Leave the `(` branch unchanged so
commas in optional-call arguments retain their existing cost behavior.

Hi @simeulinuxkaliaiwr, thanks for this PR! main has changed a lot since it was opened, and it now conflicts with main, so it needs a rebase before we can review it for merging.

When you rebase, please also make sure it fits the other recent changes:

CI (cargo xtask ci) now runs on PRs. Once it's green on the rebased branch, we'll take a look. Thank you!
