Slide show: render the Presenter View's next-slide preview off the UI thread - #1371
With Presenter View on, every slide change re-rendered the next-slide preview synchronously and single-threaded on the UI thread. Turning the page waited for it.
Measured on the sample deck at 1920×1080 (release build, kittest harness, per-frame time after PageDown):
first frames after a slide change
Presenter View off
5–36 ms
Presenter View on (before)
35–80 ms
Refs #964 (that issue already names this preview as a likely cause of the sluggishness).
Change (crates/ui-egui/src/show/presenter.rs, fields in show.rs)
presenter_window renders the preview on a show-next-preview worker thread, like the existing next-slide prefetch ([Performance] Noticeable delay when advancing slides in presentation mode #240); the frame that asks for it doesn't wait, and it is picked up with try_recv on a later frame (repaint requested while it is on its way).
One render at a time. While a render is in flight, page turns start no other; when it finishes, its result is used if still wanted, otherwise the newest preview is requested.
The job and texture are keyed by the presentation (Arc identity) as well as the slide, so a preview rendered before an edit is dropped and rendered again.
The web build (no threads), a worker that fails to start, or one that dies, renders the preview inline once, as before.
While a preview is on its way the box stays empty instead of reading "End of slide show".
presenter_window takes &Arc<Presentation> (all callers already had one).
Tests (crates/ui-egui/src/show/tests.rs)
the_presenter_next_preview_arrives_without_blocking_the_frame: one raw frame leaves the preview pending with one render started; it then lands without a second render.
paging_quickly_renders_one_preview_at_a_time_and_lands_on_the_newest: six quick page turns land on the final next slide; a pinned pending job blocks any new render.
cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui: all pass except the_language_dialog_marks_the_selected_text, which fails identically on main in my environment (built without craft-fonts). Clippy clean.

Walkthrough
Presenter View tracks next-slide previews by presentation and slide. It renders previews in a background thread where available and uses synchronous rendering when threads are unavailable or worker rendering fails. It discards stale results and shows the end-of-show label only when no next slide exists.

Review details
Systems and components
observed — crates (service) was modified; 3 changed files map to changed impact.
Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/show.rs: The next-slide preview texture now retains its presentation and slide index. Show adds an optional background-render job carrying that presentation, slide index, and a color-image receiver, plus a test-only counter for renders started on another thread.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/show.rs: Show::new now initializes the background-render job to None and the test-only preview-spawn counter to 0.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/show/presenter.rs: Added render_preview and changed presenter_window to accept an Arc<Presentation>. The next-preview cache and job are matched against both presentation identity and slide index. A single worker renders previews on non-wasm targets; pending work is polled with repaint requests, while wasm, spawn failure, and worker disconnection use synchronous rendering. Completed results for slides no longer requested are discarded.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/show/presenter.rs: The “End of slide show” label is now drawn only when next is None; a missing preview for a slide that is still being rendered no longer shows the end label.

Thanks. Rendering the preview off the UI thread is the right fix for #964. CodeRabbit's Major note holds, though: paging quickly through slow slides starts a new full-size render for every page, and the abandoned renders keep running. Could you keep at most one render in flight (start the newest request when the current one finishes) and add a test that pages through several slides quickly?
At most one preview render is in flight. Paging during it doesn't spawn more; once it finishes, the newest wanted preview starts (a stale result is dropped).
Job and texture are keyed by presentation identity plus slide (CodeRabbit's minor note), so edits mid-render re-render.
A worker that dies falls back to one inline render instead of respawning.
Tests: paging_quickly_renders_one_preview_at_a_time_and_lands_on_the_newest (six quick page turns, then checks the preview is the final next slide and no job remains) and a_preview_of_an_edited_presentation_is_rendered_again.
cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui passes apart from the_language_dialog_marks_the_selected_text, which fails the same way on main here. Clippy is clean.
Require the first frame to keep the preview job pending.
The first frame calls try_recv before spawning the preview worker. A successful spawn therefore leaves next_job set and next_tex unset. The current assertion also passes when inline fallback rendering occurs, so it does not protect the non-blocking behavior.

Tighten the first-frame assertion in the test around the preview render harness:
require `next_job` to be present and `next_tex` to be absent after the first
frame, so inline fallback rendering cannot satisfy the check.
3408-3409: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Heavy lift
Make the rapid-paging test detect overlapping renders.
The bound preview_spawns <= turns + 1 does not distinguish serialized rendering from replacing a worker on every page turn. The test performs six explicit turns, and presenter_window increments preview_spawns at most once per call. A setup frame plus six replacements produces exactly turns + 1 spawns and passes.
next_job.is_none() checks only the last tracked job. The newest-preview assertion can also pass after the latest replacement completes. Neither assertion detects earlier workers that continue rendering.
Use a deterministic barrier that keeps the first render pending during all six turns, then assert that no additional spawn occurs. Per-frame accounting is also sufficient if it asserts that the spawn count increases only after the previous job has finished.

… thread (storytold#964)
Turning the page with Presenter View on re-rendered the next-slide preview
synchronously, single-threaded, on the UI thread. The preview now renders
on a worker thread and arrives on a later frame; the web build (no
threads), or a worker that dies, renders it inline. At most one render runs:
paging faster than it asks for the newest preview once it is done, and a
finished one no longer wanted is dropped. Job and texture are keyed by the
presentation as well as the slide, so a preview rendered before an edit is
rendered again. While a preview is on its way the box stays empty rather
than saying "End of slide show".
Rebased onto the show module split: show/presenter.rs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Rebased onto current main after the module split and squashed to one commit (356195b). The change itself is the same; it now lives in show/presenter.rs, show.rs and show/tests.rs. Tests and clippy pass, except the_language_dialog_marks_the_selected_text, which fails the same way on main here.
build_ui_state calls the UI closure once during construction. The explicit harness.step() is a later frame and can collect the worker result. Therefore, requiring next_job.is_some() after that step is not reliable.
Inspect the state immediately after harness construction on native targets:

A failed native spawn cannot validate this non-blocking test. Cover that supported inline fallback separately if needed.

Update `the_presenter_next_preview_arrives_without_blocking_the_frame` to
inspect pending state immediately after harness construction, before calling
`harness.step()`. On native targets, assert that the first frame leaves
`next_job` set, `next_tex` unset, and `preview_spawns` equal to one; keep the
later loop for checking completion.
The spawn-count bound does not detect overlapping renders. Replacing the pending worker on each turn can produce six starts, satisfy preview_spawns <= turns + 1, and still display the newest preview. The final next_job.is_none() assertion checks only eventual cleanup.
Add a focused deterministic check that keeps a channel sender alive, installs its empty receiver as show.next_job, advances one presenter frame, and asserts that preview_spawns is unchanged and next_job remains Some. This directly tests the one-in-flight contract. Atomic active/max instrumentation is not necessary and would require more test-only state.

A harness runs frames until no repaint is asked for, so the preview had
already landed when its first assertion ran. One raw frame now shows the
preview pending and one render started, and the paging test pins a pending
job and checks a page turn starts no other render.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re CodeRabbit's two test nitpicks: both done in feecee0.
Pending state: checking right after harness construction doesn't work, because build_ui_state calls run_ok(), which keeps running frames while a repaint is requested, so the preview has already landed. The test now runs a single raw Context::run_ui frame and asserts next_job is set, next_tex is empty and preview_spawns == 1, then lets a harness finish it. It also asserts no second render was started.
One-render gate: the paging test now pins a pending job (sender kept alive), turns a page, and asserts preview_spawns is unchanged and the job is still pending.
Review notes (comment only). Read the full diff and ran the three new tests (cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib -- presenter_next paging_quickly preview_of_an_edited, CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2, Linux, built without craft-fonts). Results on the PR head: paging_quickly_renders_one_preview_at_a_time_and_lands_on_the_newest and a_preview_of_an_edited_presentation_is_rendered_again pass; the_presenter_next_preview_arrives_without_blocking_the_frame fails every time (3 of 3 runs) with Dropped TexturesDelta with 1 unapplied deltas. Deltas need to be handled from egui's Drop check (epaint textures.rs:337). I got the same result after merging current origin/main into the PR head locally (not pushed). The test's first frame is let _ = ctx.run_ui(...), which drops the frame's output with its texture delta unapplied; clearing the delta (out.textures_delta.clear()) before it is dropped is what the message asks for. The PR's CI shows success, so this may depend on the test profile or environment; I did not find out why it differs, so treat it as 'fails on this machine', not as a proven CI failure.
The design reads sensibly to me: one worker at a time, a finished render that is no longer wanted is dropped, a dead worker falls back to inline rendering, the web build renders inline, and End of slide show no longer shows while a preview is pending. Not measured: the PR's frame-time table (I did not run its benchmark), the app by hand with a real two-display Presenter View, and Windows/macOS.
Note on what I changed before landing: merged main in, and the off-thread preview test clears the frame's texture deltas so it doesn't trip egui's drop debug_assert.
Conflicts were additions next to the strip's, kept on both sides:
- app/commands.rs: show.presenter now answers {on, window} (storytold#1480) and
show.keepCursor is new (storytold#1445); show.presenterStrip sits between them
- app/playback.rs, state.rs: show_keep_cursor next to presenter_strip
- lib.rs: the new show.presenter description and show.keepCursor entry,
with show.presenterStrip after them
- show/presenter.rs: render_preview and the Arc document for the
off-thread Next preview (storytold#1371) above the strip's doc comment
- show/tests.rs: upstream's file as is, with the strip tests appended
(git had interleaved the two appended blocks)
- ROADMAP.md, docs/slideshow-parity.md: both entries, strip first
