security(anim): bound custom-show and timeline lookups, share motion paths across paragraph effects - #1341
Removes four CPU/memory amplification paths in deckcraft-anim driven by document-controlled counts:
F-095 (CWE-407)show.rs: custom-show resolution searched pres.slides per entry. show_order and custom_indices now build one slide-id -> index map (first slide wins a duplicate id, as before).
F-096 (CWE-407)timeline.rs: slide.shape(a.shape) was a recursive tree search per animation. A shape index is built once per timeline (same pre-order, 64-deep, first-wins semantics as Slide::shape) and reused for targets and base colours; the per-effect colors.iter().any scan is a HashSet.
F-097 (CWE-407)timeline.rs: paragraph build roles were recomputed and re-walked for every animation. They are computed once per shape and shared (group registration already deduplicated, so order is unchanged).
F-098 (CWE-400)timeline.rs: spec.clone() deep-copied the motion path into each paragraph effect. Effects now hold Rc<EffectSpec>, so the path is shared.
Not changed: caching the resolved show order across playback steps (the lookup is now linear in the two list sizes, which removes the quadratic term).
Custom shows now consistently resolve duplicate slide IDs to the first matching slide and omit IDs that don’t match a slide.
Animation effects are handled consistently when shapes share an ID, and paragraph-targeted animations retain the expected effects across multiple paragraphs.
Performance
Large custom shows and complex animations are processed more efficiently, helping keep animation setup responsive.
… and motion paths
Custom-show resolution, timeline target lookup and by-paragraph builds scaled with the product
of two document-controlled counts, and paragraph expansion deep-copied the parsed motion path
into every effect.
- show_order / custom_indices resolve slide ids through one id->index map.
- Timeline::with indexes shapes once (same first-wins order as Slide::shape) for animation
targets and base colours, and records each animated shape's colour with a set.
- Paragraph targets are worked out once per shape and shared across its animations.
- Effects share their EffectSpec (and so the motion path) by Rc instead of cloning it.

Custom-show resolution and animation timeline construction now index slide and shape IDs. Timeline construction also shares paragraph targets and effect specifications, and avoids repeated base-fill checks.
Changes: Animation indexing and reuse

Summary
Custom-show ID resolution crates/anim/src/show.rs, crates/anim/src/tests.rs
Custom-show entries resolve through a first-match slide ID index. Missing IDs remain omitted, and hidden slides remain filtered from custom_indices. Tests cover duplicate IDs, missing IDs, ordering, and a 20,000-slide show.
Timeline shape indexing and target reuse crates/anim/src/timeline.rs, crates/anim/src/tests.rs
Timeline construction indexes shapes in tree-search order, keeps the first occurrence of duplicate IDs, and limits index traversal to depth 64. It reuses paragraph targets and effect specifications, and uses a HashSet to skip previously processed shapes when collecting base fills. Tests cover duplicate shape IDs and repeated by-paragraph animations.
storytold/deckcraft issue 1147: This change reduces repeated work in animation target and paragraph processing, but the supplied context does not establish that it addresses the reported renderer frame-rate cause.
Possibly related PRs
storytold/deckcraft#1260: That PR introduced the paragraph-role logic and group-recording behavior that this change now caches and reuses.
Navigation through large slides without animations can do unnecessary work. The issue is localized and does not prevent merging, but the inexpensive fix is worthwhile.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 77567
The lookup and sharing changes reduce repeated work on document-controlled data. However, the new shared ownership conflicts with an existing application cache and prevents that consumer from compiling, blocking delivery of the availability improvements. No new attacker privilege or trust-boundary bypass was identified in the inspected paths.
Retained concerns
Medium · architecture · inferred: Rc-backed effect storage removes Timeline's Send and Sync properties, conflicting with the existing UI static OnceLock. Even though normal rendering uses locally cached timelines, the static fallback must satisfy Rust's thread-safety requirements. This public ownership-contract regression blocks integration and delivery of the availability hardening to that consumer.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The examined attacker-controlled inputs are presentation slide IDs, shape IDs, paragraph content, animation counts, and motion paths. Their relevant outcomes are construction cost and local slideshow rendering. The concrete dependent regression affects UI build compatibility, not additional runtime authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The changed algorithms remove the specific repeated-search and per-paragraph path-copy multipliers described in the PR. They do not establish a global resource budget: for example, every timeline construction now indexes the shape tree, including slides without animations. This is a resource-cost tradeoff, not a verified new denial-of-service finding in the available evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The specification remains private to the animation implementation. Public playback access evaluates it immutably into animation state and sanitizes the result; sharing the specification does not expose a new external mutation interface.
