Text: AutoFormat starts bulleted and numbered lists as you type - #1258
Conversation
A paragraph that starts with *, -, --, >, <>, 1., 1), I., i., A., a. or a) followed by a space or tab now becomes a bulleted or numbered list in that style through format.bullets or format.numbering, and the typed lead and space are removed. The keystroke is one undo step. Backspace right after the change puts the typed text and the paragraph's formatting back. Tools ▸ AutoCorrect has "Automatic bulleted and numbered lists" to turn it off, and text.autocorrect takes and reports it as lists.

Adds the lists AutoCorrect option and Prefs::ac_lists, enabled by default. DocState records an active AutoList conversion, and the AutoCorrect dialog exposes the preference. |
List conversion and Backspace restoration crates/engine/src/cmd/text.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, ROADMAP.md, docs/gaps.md |
Recognized markers convert after a space or tab at paragraph start. Backspace restores the marker, delimiter, and prior paragraph formatting when the saved revision and selection still match. Tests cover supported triggers, exclusions, disabling the preference, restoration, and caret placement. Documentation records the feature and opt-out. |

Merge Risk:
Minimal · up to 0c0cc
-
No actionable issue remains in the reviewed change; it is ready to merge after normal checks.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to 0c0cc
-
The change remains within existing document-editing authority and uses fixed formatting operations. Backspace restoration checks the document revision and text selection. Residual risk is concentrated in recovery behavior, particularly restoration after undo and redo; no security boundary bypass was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The inspected conversion path affects the currently edited paragraph, including an existing table-cell or notes text selection. Preference changes apply at Session scope. The new path does not establish access to another document or tenant; authentication and tenant isolation outside Session were not assessed.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The text insertion and deletion commands retain their existing active-text-selection preconditions. Nested list formatting executes through the same Session command dispatcher, which checks formatter enablement; it does not introduce a separate authority-bearing execution path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — A nested formatter error propagates to the outer text command, whose transaction wrapper restores the original document and selection when the document identity matches. Nested formatting does not create a separate undo entry. This provides source-level failure containment, although no targeted formatter-failure test was identified.

text.insert returned the caret from before AutoCorrect ran. After a typed space started a list, it reported (0, 2) for `* ` while the caret was at (0, 0) in the emptied paragraph, and after `(c) ` it reported (0, 4) for the two-character `© `. It now reports the caret from the selection after AutoCorrect.

Typing
*or1.at the start of a paragraph left the characters as typed. PowerPoint's AutoFormat as you type turns such a paragraph into a bulleted or numbered list ("Automatic bulleted and numbered lists"), anddocs/gaps.mdlisted it as missing next to the ordinals rule from #856.Microsoft's description of the feature: https://web.archive.org/web/20240714081832/https://insider.microsoft365.com/en-us/blog/automatic-bullet-formatting-in-powerpoint-for-the-web (the symbols and numbers, the space that starts the list, Backspace to revert).
