Found while testing crates/engine/src/cmd/arrange.rs:325-327 (distribute) (no existing issue): arrange.distribute uses the last shape's right edge as the span end, pushing a wide middle shape outside the selection.

Cause

When distributing relative to the selection, distribute took the span end from the right (or bottom) edge of the last shape sorted by left (or top) edge. A wide middle shape can extend past that edge. The span then came out smaller than the combined shape sizes, the gap went negative, and shapes were packed outside the original bounds.

Fix

The span now runs from the minimum left (or top) edge to the maximum right (or bottom) edge across all selected shapes. A regression test covers the case of a wide middle shape.

Verified

  • Regression test tests::distribute_wide_middle_stays_in_selection_bounds: fails on main without the fix and passes with it (cargo test -p deckcraft-engine --lib distribute_wide_middle).
  • cargo xtask ci passes except tests::east_asian_vertical_text_stands_ideographs_upright, which also fails on main without this change.

Not changed

Distributing relative to the slide, and the gap and positioning logic, are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved shape distribution so spacing is calculated across the full selection bounds, including when a middle shape is wider than the outer shapes.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for distributing shapes with varying widths.

📝 Walkthrough

Selection-based distribution now uses the minimum leading edge and maximum trailing edge across the selected shapes. A regression test covers horizontal distribution when the middle shape is wider than the outer shapes.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/arrange.rs: For selection-based distribution, the target span now uses the minimum leading edge and maximum trailing edge among all shape bounds on the selected axis; previously it used the first and last bounds after sorting by leading edge.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/tests.rs: Adds a test that inserts shapes of widths 10, 100, and 10 at x positions 0, 20, and 30, distributes them horizontally to the selection bounds, and checks their resulting x positions are 0, 10, and 110.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare each position with the expected position at the same index.

position() searches xs, not the expected positions. If distribution returns [0.0, 10.0, 10.0], this assertion passes because both occurrences of 10.0 use index 1. Compare by index so the test detects an incorrectly placed third shape.

Proposed fix
-    assert!(xs.iter().all(|x| (*x - [0.0, 10.0, 110.0][xs.iter().position(|y| y == x).unwrap()]).abs() < 1e-6), "{xs:?}");
+    assert!(xs.iter().zip([0.0, 10.0, 110.0]).all(|(x, expected)| (*x - expected).abs() < 1e-6), "{xs:?}");
