Charts: bars draw their series' pattern fill and no fill - #1146
Bar and column series that PowerPoint draws hatched, or empty with an outline, came out in the palette's accent colours:
Pattern fills (c:ser/c:spPr/a:pattFill) weren't read at all.
a:noFill was read, but the chart renderer reduces every fill to one colour and fell back to the palette for anything but a solid fill, so an empty series was filled anyway.
Bar outlines (c:spPr/a:ln) weren't drawn.
Evidence
A synthetic column chart written by DeckCraft, with three series edited to have a red-on-yellow dkDnDiag pattern, a:noFill with a 3 pt blue a:ln, and a:noFill with no line. In PowerPoint for Mac 16.114's PDF export, the first is the pattern, the second an empty bar with a blue outline, and the third nothing at all, with legend keys to match. DeckCraft now draws the same.
On a private corpus of 166 real-world decks (3,690 visible slides; not attached), compared with PowerPoint's PDF exports, five chart slides of one deck (hatched "embodied carbon" series next to empty "operational" ones) improve, from about 5–7% of pixels differing to 3–4%. No slide gets worse. What's left on those slides is the axis scale and the openDmnd tile's look, both separate from this change.
How
read/chart.rssimple_fill reads a:pattFill through a new dml::pattern, which the shape fill parser now shares. write/chart.rs writes Fill::Pattern back as a:pattFill for an edited chart; unchanged charts are still written from their kept XML.
render/chart.rs: bars and their legend keys use a Paint (a colour, a preset pattern through pattern::fill, or nothing) from the point's own fill (c:dPt), then the series', then the palette's. A series' solid outline is stroked at its width. The vary-colours rule (one accent per point in a single-series chart without its own fill) and waterfall colours are unchanged.
series_fill, which lines, areas and markers use, takes a pattern's foreground colour instead of the palette's.
Tests
render::tests::column_series_draw_their_pattern_fill_and_no_fill_with_their_outline: the pattern's two colours and the empty series' outline are drawn, and none of the three palette colours appears. Before: 0 red and 0 yellow pixels.
read::chart::tests::series_pattern_fills_are_read_and_written_back: reads pattFill, noFill and the outline, and an edited chart writes the pattern back.
cargo xtask ci: fmt, pdf-deps and clippy pass, and assets, layers and wasm pass when run on their own. cargo test --workspace --no-fail-fast passes 1,733 tests, with one failure, replacefonts_tests::ribbon_button_opens_the_dialog_and_replaces, which fails the same way on main.
Overlap
#255 (charts rewrite, conflicting since 2026-10-15) also touches write/chart.rs's simple_fill; there it writes a pattern as its foreground colour. Whichever lands second will need a small merge there.
Not in this PR
The chart XML DeckCraft writes has no text sizes, so PowerPoint draws a DeckCraft-made chart's title, axis labels and legend much smaller than DeckCraft does (seen in the probe above).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Pattern fills are preserved when charts are opened and saved, and appear in chart bars and legend keys with their foreground and background colors.
Bug Fixes
Chart bars and legend keys now respect series configured with no fill, including visible outlines. Palette colors no longer appear in place of explicitly configured pattern or no-fill styles.
Chart pattern fills are now parsed and serialized as DrawingML pattern fills. Rendering uses pattern and no-fill paints for bars and legend keys, and draws configured series outlines. Tests cover chart round-trip preservation and rendering.

Summary
Parse and serialize pattern fills crates/pptx/src/read/dml.rs, crates/pptx/src/read/chart.rs, crates/pptx/src/write/chart.rs
The DrawingML parser extracts pattern fills with preset and color defaults. Chart reading and writing preserve pattern fill data. A test checks pattern and no-fill values after editing and rereading a chart.
Render chart paints and outlines crates/render/src/chart.rs, crates/render/src/tests.rs, ROADMAP.md
Chart rendering resolves solid, pattern, and no-fill paints for bars and legend keys. Bars and legend keys can draw series outlines. Waterfall bars retain specialized palette selection. The rendering test checks pattern colors, outlines, and absence of palette colors.
storytold/gridcraft#1668: This issue concerns chart round trips dropping formatting; this change adds read and write support for pattern and no-fill series formatting.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in crates/pptx/src/read/dml.rs: fill_el now calls pattern for pattFill; the extracted public function constructs the same PatternFill, defaulting the preset to pct5 and missing foreground/background colors to black/white.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/pptx/src/write/chart.rs: simple_fill now writes pattern fills as a:pattFill with the configured preset, or pct5 when empty, and serializes the foreground and background colors. Fill::Pattern is removed from the fallback branch that can emit a gradient’s first stop as a solid fill.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/render/src/chart.rs: series_fill now uses a pattern fill’s foreground color as the series color, in addition to solid fills; other fill types still use the palette.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/render/src/chart.rs: Added internal Paint variants and helpers to resolve solid, pattern, and no-fill paints; patterns use their foreground and background, while absent or unsupported fills use the supplied fallback. Added solid bar-outline extraction with a default width of 0.75 clamped to 0–20. bar_paint now uses an explicit point fill first, then per-point palette colors for a single-series varying-color non-waterfall chart with no series fill, and otherwise resolves the series fill. Previously, point fills only supplied solid colors and bars always rendered as solid fills.

Explanation
The title "Charts: bars draw their series' pattern fill and no fill" matches the main change. The PR makes bar and column charts draw pattern fills and no-fill series, including outlines, instead of using palette colours. The objectives and the raw summary both describe this change, including pattern reading and writing in chart XML. The title is specific and does not use vague terms. It does not mention the outline stroke or the legend-key changes, but those are secondary to the main point.

A bar series' own fill was read only when solid or a gradient: a pattern
(a:pattFill) was dropped, and an a:noFill series was read but drawn in the
palette's colour anyway, because the chart renderer turned every fill into
one colour and fell back to the palette for anything but solid. PowerPoint
for Mac draws the pattern, leaves an a:noFill bar empty and draws its
outline (c:spPr/a:ln) where it has one: a synthetic column chart with a
red-on-yellow dkDnDiag series, an empty series with a 3 pt blue outline
and an empty one without, exported as PDF, shows exactly that, legend
keys included.
- The chart reader reads a:pattFill (dml::pattern, shared with shapes);
the chart writer writes it back for an edited chart.
- Bars and their legend keys paint with the series' or point's own fill:
a colour, a preset pattern (pattern::fill) or nothing, then the series'
solid outline at its width.
- Lines, areas and markers, which take one colour, use a pattern's
foreground colour instead of the palette's.

Preserve DrawingML channel transforms in chart pattern colors.
When an edited chart contains red, redOff, or another valid channel transform in fgClr or bgClr, ColorTransform::from_xml drops it. The chart writer then emits only the base color. For example, a black base with <a:red val="100000"/> is written back as black, so the pattern can render with a different foreground or background color.
Add the missing transforms to ColorTransform and handle them in parsing, serialization, and color application.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on crates/pptx/src/read/dml.rs:96-102 (channel transforms in chart pattern colours): I'm leaving it out of this PR.
The gap is real, but this PR didn't cause it. ColorTransform in crates/color/src/lib.rs has never had red, redOff, green, greenOff, blue or blueOff. This PR doesn't touch it, and every colour deckcraft reads loses them the same way: solid fills, lines, text and gradient stops. Before this PR, an edited chart lost the series' pattern fill completely. Now the pattern comes back exactly as faithfully as a solid fill does.
Adding those six transforms changes the shared colour model that every fill and line goes through (parsing, writing, the serde form and how colours are applied), so it belongs in its own PR, not one about chart bars. PowerPoint itself rarely writes them.
@coderabbitai please try again: do you agree that the missing red/redOff/green/greenOff/blue/blueOff transforms are an existing gap in ColorTransform (crates/color/src/lib.rs), shared by every colour deckcraft reads, and so out of scope for this PR? My reasoning is in the comment above.
Closing: this change landed in main through the integration batch #1260, which merged 08b7b5e (the same patch as this PR's head, on an older base). Thanks!
