Chart value axis ends near the data maximum; chart.options {axisMin, axisMax} - #1019
Found by an AI agent building a deck through the MCP server: a bar chart whose largest value
was 59.7 drew its value axis to 100, leaving the bars in the left 60 % of the plot, and there
was no command to set the axis bounds.
The automatic scale picks the smallest 1-2-5 unit that fits the labels the axis has room for.
On a horizontal value axis that room was a fixed six characters per label, so a 400 pt bar
chart had room for three labels and the unit jumped from 10 to 50. The horizontal axis now
measures the widest label of the scale the data asks for, and no axis gets fewer than four
intervals, so the same chart ends at 70 by tens (a column chart of that size already did).
Charts with fixed bounds or a fixed major unit are unchanged.
chart.options {axisMin?, axisMax?: n|null} fixes the value axis' bounds: the model's existing
y_min/y_max, which the .pptx writer already exports as c:min/c:max and the reader imports. null returns a bound to automatic; a value that is not a number, or a minimum at or above the
maximum, is refused and changes nothing.
Tests: the pixel test value_axis_ends_near_the_data_maximum (render) draws a 400x300 bar chart
and a column chart with values up to 59.7 and checks the longest bar reaches at least 80 % of
the plot between the zero line and the outermost gridline (the bar chart reached 0.596 before); chart_options_axis_bounds_set_clear_and_refuse (engine) sets, clears and refuses the bounds. cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p deckcraft-engine -p deckcraft-render --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test -p deckcraft-engine (333), cargo test -p deckcraft-render (175), cargo test -p deckcraft-mcp, cargo test -p deckcraft-pptx, cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets pass.
Set chart axis minimum and maximum values to finite numbers, or clear either bound to restore automatic scaling. Invalid values and ranges where the minimum is not below the maximum are rejected.
Set or clear category and value axis titles. Invalid axes and missing title text are rejected.
Adjust the gap width of bar and column charts from 0% to 500%. Other chart types and out-of-range values are rejected.
Improvements
Value-axis intervals adapt to available space and label fit, with a maximum of 12 intervals. Horizontal charts account for label widths to improve readability and use of chart space.

Chart commands now support value-axis bounds, axis titles, and gap width for bar and column charts. Rendering estimates value-axis intervals based on available label space. Tests cover option validation, rendering, and gap-width preservation through PPTX export and import.
Changes: Chart options
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Chart option contracts and updates crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
chart.options accepts finite numeric axisMin and axisMax values or null for automatic bounds, and rejects invalid or inconsistent bounds. It accepts gapWidth from 0 through 500 percent for supported bar and column chart types. The chart.axisTitle command sets or clears category and value axis titles. Tests cover validation, rendering effects, and PPTX round-tripping of gapWidth.
Chart axis label sizing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Estimate intervals from label fit crates/render/src/chart.rs, crates/render/src/tests.rs
Rendering estimates value-axis intervals from axis length and label-box extent, then adjusts horizontal-axis estimates based on label widths. Tests check plot fill for bar and column charts and label spacing in a short chart.
Some charts with hidden value labels may leave bars unnecessarily short of the plot edge. The issue is bounded and can be fixed or accepted before merging.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs: The chart.options command description now documents nullable axisMin/axisMax and gapWidth in the 0–500 percent range.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs: Adds the chart.axisTitle command, accepting category or value and a string or null title, and returning change status, chart IDs, and both axis titles.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs: Adds chart_axis_title: rejects unsupported axes and non-string, non-null text; updates the selected chart axis title, clears its raw chart data, and returns the changed result and current titles for the specified ID or selected shapes.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs: Adds parsing for finite numeric axis bounds or null automatic bounds, and validates that the resulting minimum is less than the maximum. gapWidth must be finite and between 0 and 500; it is divided by 100 before storage and accepted only for column, stacked/percent-column, bar, stacked/percent-bar charts. These checks run before the existing chart-options updates.

Explanation
The title names two changes that appear in the changeset: the value axis ending near the data maximum (render chart.rs and its tests) and the chart.options {axisMin, axisMax} bounds (engine insert.rs and tests). The gapWidth and axisTitle additions are not named, but the title does not need to cover every detail. It is specific and concise, and a reviewer scanning history can identify the primary changes.

Recompute horizontal capacity from the selected scale's labels.
A reachable 60×100 ChartType::Bar with values near 20 and 79 selects two intervals from the preliminary two-character labels 0 through 90. The final scale is 0, 50, 100, so its widest label has three characters. The final label spacing can be smaller than the final label extent, which can make adjacent value labels overlap.
Measure the formatted labels on the candidate final scale, then reduce or reselect the interval count until the actual tick spacing fits those labels. The fixed horizontal gutter and 60-point label rectangles do not prevent this mismatch.

Recompute horizontal label spacing from the final scale.
The estimator measures labels from c.axis_scale(false, 12), then the renderer requests a different scale with c.axis_scale(false, max_intervals). A reachable 400×300 horizontal chart with y_format = "$#,##0.00" and a value near 501187233627.2715 exposes the mismatch: the preliminary labels are 19 characters, so the estimator selects two intervals, but the final scale is 0..1,000,000,000,000 by 500,000,000,000, whose labels are 21 characters. The estimated label width is then about 157.5 while tick spacing is about 153.3. wrap is disabled, and the text renderer does not clip the label rectangles, so these final labels can overlap.
Recompute the interval budget from the scale selected by the current budget. Allow one interval when two final intervals cannot fit.

…axisMax}
A bar chart with a maximum of 59.7 drew its value axis to 100: the horizontal
axis assumed every label six characters wide, so a 400 pt chart had room for
three labels and the step jumped from 10 to 50. The horizontal axis now measures
the widest label of the scale the data asks for, and no axis gets fewer than four
intervals, so the same chart ends at 70 by tens (a column chart was already at
70). The bounds can also be fixed: `chart.options {axisMin?, axisMax?: n|null}`
sets the model's existing y_min/y_max (written to the .pptx as c:min/c:max);
null returns to automatic, and a minimum at or above the maximum is refused.

The four-interval floor put five labels 10 pt apart on a 60 pt tall
chart, in boxes 14 pt high. The floor now holds only while four labels
fit along the axis; a shorter axis takes two or three.

The model, renderer and pptx reader/writer already carried axis titles; no command set them.
PowerPoint's Chart Elements > Axis Titles adds one per axis (text "Axis Title", edited in
place); axis is category|value and null removes it. Answers the titles after the change.

Format Data Series offers Gap Width (0 to 500 %, 150 % by default) for bar and column charts;
it is c:gapWidth in the pptx. chart.options takes gapWidth in percent, refuses values outside
0 to 500 and charts that have no bars, and the existing renderer and pptx reader/writer carry it.
