table.insertColumn* keeps the table's width and copies the neighbour column's cell formatting - #1018
Found by an AI agent building a deck through the MCP server. table.insertColumnRight (and insertColumnLeft) added a column of the neighbour's width to the table, so a full-width
table ran off the slide and had to be resized column by column, and the new cells came with
none of the fill, bold or anchor the agent had set on the neighbouring cells.
The new column still takes the width of the column it is inserted beside, but the columns then
shrink in proportion so the table keeps its total width: a 3-column 840 pt table becomes four
columns of 210 pt. keepWidth: false restores the growth. Each new cell copies the neighbour
cell's explicit formatting (fill, borders, margins, anchor, text direction and the text
properties of its first paragraph, kept on the empty paragraph's end mark) and keeps its own
merge state. Rows are left alone: a table growing by a row is what people expect. The params
docs say so.
Tests: table_insert_column_keeps_the_table_width_and_copies_the_neighbour_format (engine)
inserts right of a formatted 3x840 table and checks four columns, 840 pt total, the frame width,
the copied fill, margins, anchor and bold; inserts left of the first column; and checks keepWidth: false grows the table by the neighbour's width. It failed before (width 1120). cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p deckcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test -p deckcraft-engine (333), cargo test -p deckcraft-render (174), cargo test -p deckcraft-mcp, cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets pass.
Inserted table columns inherit the adjacent column’s width and cell formatting while remaining empty.
By default, inserting a column increases the table’s total width without changing existing column widths. Enable width preservation to scale columns proportionally and keep the total width unchanged.
Horizontal merged cells can expand at either edge of an inserted column; when insertion is at the left edge, the anchor’s contents and formatting move to the new cell.
Bug Fixes
Invalid values for the width-preservation option return an error without changing the table.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Column insertion now copies the adjacent column’s width and cell formatting. The optional keepWidth parameter defaults to false; when enabled, column widths are scaled to preserve the table’s total width. Insertions can also expand horizontal merges at their edges.

Summary
Insertion and merge handling crates/model/src/table.rs
insert_col delegates to the new insert_col_beside method. When insertion occurs at either edge of a horizontal merge that spans the neighboring column, the merge expands to include the new column.
Column insertion options and formatting crates/engine/src/cmd/table.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Column commands accept optional keepWidth. Missing or null values default to false; non-boolean values return an error. New columns copy the neighboring column’s width and cell formatting. When keepWidth is true, widths are scaled to preserve the prior total, if both totals exceed 1e-9. Tests cover merge behavior, invalid values, width changes, journal parameters, and undo restoration.
Inserting a column beside a malformed edge merge can erase cell text. Fix the anchor selection before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a32c2
The change stays within existing table-editing commands and preserves their document-editing authority. Merge handling and undo behavior have supporting checks. No introduced security issue was established, although exposure through external callers was not fully assessed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Within the inspected command path, the changed outcome is mutation of the targeted table, including column widths and affected merge anchors. No added service, credential, filesystem, or network authority was identified in that path; external Rust consumers remain outside the established exposure scope.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-supplied insertion parameters flow through the existing command and table-target checks. Invalid keepWidth types are rejected before editing. These are local command controls, not evidence of runtime authentication or tenant isolation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The existing Session transaction boundary contains partial command failures and provides recovery through undo. Direct model callers do not inherit that boundary; crash consistency for those callers was not established.

copy_cell_format copies cell borders, but this fixture does not set a border and the assertions do not inspect one. A regression that removes border copying would still pass while inserted cells lose visible formatting.

Update the test
table_insert_column_keeps_the_table_width_and_copies_the_neighbour_format to set
a border on the source cells before insertion and assert the inserted cell
inherits the neighboring cell’s borders. Keep the fixture and assertion focused
on verifying border copying.
Add a merged-neighbor case to the insertion command test.
The fixture contains no merged cells, so it does not exercise copy_cell_format preserving the destination cell's merge cover. A regression that copies the neighbor's merge flags could mark the new cells as covered while this test still passes.

…column's cell formatting
Inserting a column grew the table by one column width, so a full-width table
ran off the slide, and the new cells came with none of the fill, bold or anchor
the neighbouring cells had. The new column now takes the width of the column it
is inserted beside and the other columns shrink in proportion, so the table keeps
its total width (`keepWidth: false` restores the growth); each new cell takes the
neighbour cell's fill, borders, margins, anchor, text direction and text
properties (kept on the empty paragraph's end mark). Rows are left alone: a table
growing by a row is normal.

…styped value is not taken as the default
A `"keepWidth": "false"` was read as absent and the columns shrunk as if
`true` had been asked; now the command answers an error naming the field
and leaves the table alone, as the other bool params that are validated do.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… insertion is one undo step
The test went through Session::execute but only read the table afterwards;
it now checks the last journal entry is the call as made and that three
undos bring back the three 280 pt columns, their text and the frame width.

A horizontal merge covering the column the new one is inserted beside now
grows over it, also at its edge (a merged title row keeps spanning the table).

PowerPoint inserts the new column as wide as the column it is inserted
beside and widens the table by that amount; the existing widths stay.
DeckCraft rescaled every column to keep the table width by default.
keepWidth now defaults to false (true stays as an opt-in). Deleting a
column already narrows the table by its width and leaves the rest alone;
a test pins both.

table.insertColumnRight(andinsertColumnLeft) added a column of the neighbour's width to the table, so a full-widthtable ran off the slide and had to be resized column by column, and the new cells came with
none of the fill, bold or anchor the agent had set on the neighbouring cells.
The new column still takes the width of the column it is inserted beside, but the columns then
shrink in proportion so the table keeps its total width: a 3-column 840 pt table becomes four
columns of 210 pt.
keepWidth: falserestores the growth. Each new cell copies the neighbourcell's explicit formatting (fill, borders, margins, anchor, text direction and the text
