Summary

  • On Fedora 44, the released AppImage freezes when the notebook shelf popover opens, then WebKitWebProcess dumps core with SIGABRT (__glibcxx_assert_fail inside the bundled libwebkit2gtk-4.1.so.0).
  • Root cause: the AppImage bundles Ubuntu 22.04's WebKitGTK, whose Skia COLRv1 color-font code was built against FreeType 2.11's experimental COLRv1 API. Fedora 44 ships Noto Color Emoji only as COLRv1, so rendering any emoji sticker (the shelf popover shows the curated COVER_EMOJIS set) trips the colrv1_configure_skpaint assertion and aborts the renderer. tauri dev works because it uses the system WebKitGTK.
  • Fix: split the Linux release matrix — the AppImage is now built on Ubuntu 24.04 (WebKitGTK built against the stable FreeType COLRv1 API), while deb/rpm stay on Ubuntu 22.04 since they link against the host's WebKitGTK at runtime.

Verification

  • pnpm test — 72 tests pass
  • Workflow YAML validated
  • Cannot reproduce the GUI crash in this headless sandbox; verification of the actual AppImage behavior on Fedora 44 requires running the next release build

Notes

  • Ubuntu 24.04 requires glibc 2.39+ on the host, which Fedora 44 has; older distros (e.g. Ubuntu 22.04 itself) will no longer be able to run the AppImage — deb/rpm remain available for those.
