Adds an audit log screen for admins: the newest events first and every field of an event. Filters and export come from the Pro module.
The migration adds an index for each filter and turns the created index from 2.20.10 into (created, seq).

audit-log-list

Docs: semaphoreui/semaphore-docs#167

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an audit log for authorized users, with event details, paginated browsing, and filters for dates, users, projects, event types, outcomes, and IP addresses.
    • Added an Audit Log link in the account menu for users with access.
    • Added CSV and JSONL export for eligible accounts, with event details that can link to related records.
  • Access
    • Audit log access is limited to admins. Filtering and export require an eligible subscription.
  • Reliability
    • Added loading, error, retry, and pagination behavior when browsing audit events.

The session cookie is SameSite=Lax, so a link on another site could make an administrator's browser download and record an export. Requests without Sec-Fetch-Site still pass.
The store reads from after+1, so the largest int64 is now answered with 400.
helpers.WriteError answers 400 for an unknown error, so a broken store looked like a bad request.
With Pro linked through go.work the test reached the Pro controller with no user and no subscription. A request without a license now answers 403 in both builds.
A failed request after a filter change left the previous events under the new filters. Latest now reloads the latest page with the current filters even when already on it.
An error answer opened raw JSON in place of Semaphore. With the download attribute the browser reports a failed download instead.
Opening /audit-log directly without the right showed error messages. The screen now opens the last project instead, as its back button does.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds paginated audit-event storage, protected API routes, and a web interface for browsing audit events. The interface includes event details, filters, pagination, and export controls. User data now includes audit-log access, and migration 2.20.11 updates audit-event indexes.

Audit reads remain protected by server-side administrator authorization. The main concern is recovery from an interrupted MySQL index upgrade, which can prevent subsequent initialization until the partial database changes are repaired. Commercial filtering and export behavior could not be verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new MySQL index transition is not safely replayable after partial completion. An interruption after a filter index is created but before the migration marker is committed leaves persistent DDL; replay then fails on the unconditional CREATE INDEX. Interruption between dropping and replacing the created index can instead make the initial DROP fail. The transaction does not make MySQL DDL atomic, and forward SQL errors terminate the process before the error script runs. This new transition inherits an existing migration-engine weakness and can block initialization against the affected database until repaired.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new read capability covers the whole audit_event table in the selected store, rather than one project. An authorized administrator session or administrator-owned API token can page across projects and inspect recorded identity, target, source, and metadata fields. This is read authority; no new audit mutation or infrastructure privilege is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected event presentation renders names, reasons, source fields, and metadata through text interpolation. Detail pivots use a fixed link and emit filter values rather than navigating to event-controlled URLs. These paths do not establish a stored-script execution sink; commercial export behavior remains outside coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Validated API-token or verified-session identity converges on a fresh database user lookup before request context is populated. Both new routes consume that identity through shared audit middleware. Forging or retaining the browser's capability field does not bypass this server-side check.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Audit permission is checked when the view is created, not when its user prop later changes. App user refresh can occur without replacing the route, leaving previously authorized events and selected details displayed. Logout navigates away and destruction cancels loads; subsequent requests remain server-authorized. No new unauthorized retrieval or cross-identity disclosure was demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind browser request ownership and retained audit/detail/name state to the current identity and audit capability. On identity change or permission loss, cancel active requests, clear sensitive state, and leave the audit route. This would improve client-state hygiene without substituting for server authorization.

Security review

Reviewed the added/modified paths for this audit log feature (api/audit_log.go, pro/api/audit.go, db/sql/audit_event_list.go, and the Vue audit UI).

Prior automation threads: none on this PR.

Findings: No medium, high, or critical issues with a plausible exploit path.

Controls verified:

  • Audit read API is behind session/API auth plus auditLogMiddleware (admin-only, RecordDenied on failure).
  • Browser cross-site reads are restricted via Sec-Fetch-Site (same-origin / none / omitted only); covered by tests.
  • OSS filtered queries and export correctly return 403 from the Pro stub; pagination uses parameterized Squirrel queries with bounded cursors.
  • UI route/API exposure is aligned (can_read_audit_log); audit fields are rendered with Vue text interpolation (only static i18n uses v-html).

No new inline comments — nothing met the reporting threshold.

Security review

Re-reviewed after synchronize (dd337080; delta since last pass is AuditLog.vue load-error UX only).

Prior automation threads: none (previous run had no inline findings).

Findings: No medium, high, or critical issues with a plausible exploit path.

Controls verified:

  • /api/audit/* is session/API-authenticated, auditLogMiddleware requires user.Admin and records denials; routes are GET-only (TestAuditRoutes_AreGetOnly).
  • Cross-site browser reads are limited via Sec-Fetch-Site (same-origin / none / omitted); session cookies use SameSite=Lax, so cross-site embedding does not attach cookies even when the header is absent.
  • OSS filtered listing and export delegate to the Pro controller stub (403); unpaginated listing uses Squirrel with bound parameters and validated cursors.
  • UI exposure matches API (can_read_audit_log); audit fields use Vue text interpolation; v-html is limited to static i18n (audit_filters_only_pro).
  • Audit metadata displayed to admins uses token fingerprints / token types for runner registration, not raw secrets.

No new inline comments — nothing met the reporting threshold.

Older and Newer now go on by themselves while the server answers with no
events, a searched_to and a cursor in the same direction. A line shows the
direction and how far it reached, with a Stop button. Any new load, Stop or
leaving the page ends it through the request id and aborts the request in
flight. The first load and Latest stay single requests.

A page whose search stopped says how far it searched and which button
searches further. An empty page reached by paging says "No older matches."
or "No newer matches." instead of "No audit events match.". Retry repeats
the failed request with its direction.

Security review

Re-reviewed after synchronize (eab40604).

Prior automation threads: none with open inline findings; previous top-level assessments superseded by this run (cleanup_previous).

Findings: No medium, high, or critical issues with a plausible exploit path in the added/modified code.

Controls verified:

  • /api/audit/* sits behind session/API authentication and auditLogMiddleware (canReadAuditLog → admin only; denied reads recorded).
  • Browser-oriented CSRF hardening on sensitive GETs: Sec-Fetch-Site must be same-origin, none, or absent (blocks cross-site and same-site cookie-driven reads); complements existing SameSite=Lax + CSRF middleware on state-changing routes.
  • OSS pagination uses parameterized Squirrel queries (before/after validated); extra query params route to Pro handlers that return 403 without a license.
  • Vue UI renders audit fields with text interpolation (no v-html on event data); static PRO notice uses v-html on a fixed translation string only.

Slack: No Slack destination configured for this automation; summary is on the PR only.
