Closes #4247. Closes #3085.

Adds a per-template setting for the Message field in the task dialog: Optional (current behaviour), Required or Hidden, as a selector in the template form's Prompts row.

The API check runs only in TaskController.AddTask, where a user launches a task. Schedules, integrations, workflows and build chains add tasks to the pool directly, so a required template keeps running from those.

Stored as task_params.message_mode, so no migration is needed. A template without it reads as Optional, and Template.Validate() rejects any other value.

Tests

  • New unit tests in db/Template_test.go. go test ./..., npm run lint and npm run test:unit pass.
  • Smoke-tested on a local SQLite instance. Invalid modes are rejected on save, a required template returns 400 for a missing or blank message and 201 with one, and a schedule on a required template still creates its task.
  • Ran the dredd suite (SQLite, OSS build) on this branch and on develop, with identical results: 105 passing, 0 failing, 54 skipped.

Notes

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Template creators can set task messages as optional, required, or hidden.
    • Task forms now show or hide the message field based on the template setting and require a non-empty message when marked required.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid or missing required messages are rejected before task creation.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Templates can set the task message mode to optional, required, or hidden. The task forms reflect that setting, and the API rejects blank messages for required mode before creating a task.

Changes

Per-template task message modes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Message mode contract and API validation
db/Template.go, api/projects/tasks.go, db/Template_test.go
Templates resolve and validate message modes. The API validates the task message before task creation. Tests cover supported modes and message validation.
Template message-mode setting
web/src/components/TemplateForm.vue, web/src/lib/constants.js, web/src/lang/en.js
The template form offers optional, required, and hidden modes and stores the selection in task parameters. Field metadata and English labels support the selector.
Task message field behavior
web/src/components/TaskForm.vue, web/src/components/TaskParamsForm.vue
The task forms hide the message field in hidden mode. Required mode changes the label and rejects blank or whitespace-only messages. Unset modes default to optional.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a9f4f

Run remains clickable until a required message is entered, contrary to the requested interaction. Blank submissions are still blocked, so this is a bounded issue to fix or accept before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a9f4f

The change strengthens validation for manual task launches without changing project permissions or execution privileges. Automated launches intentionally remain exempt. Policy behavior during concurrent template edits and version rollback is not fully specified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new control affects manual submissions for each configured template within its project. It does not grant additional task-launch authority or change local and remote execution selection. Automated producers remain outside its enforcement scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Manual launch retains authenticated identity, project membership, and task-run permission checks. Template create and update retain project-scoped management authority, and persistence invokes Template.Validate before saving the mode. Request messages therefore cannot override the template’s configured requirement.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Message admission uses the handler’s template read, while AddTaskFrom separately re-reads the template without rechecking message mode. An overlapping authorized edit can therefore produce different policy observations during one submission. This establishes undefined policy-version semantics, not a verified privilege bypass: no supplied contract requires admitted requests to adopt later edits.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document required mode explicitly as a manual-launch policy, distinguish hidden from redaction, and define which policy snapshot governs submissions overlapping template edits. If deployments rely on required messages as an audit guarantee, document that older serving versions or rollback do not enforce it.
