Adds Subversion repositories next to git ones. Revives #427 (multi-VCS support, closed in 2021 without a PR).

We run this branch in production: Semaphore is deployed in our infrastructure and runs our Ansible playbooks from an svn+ssh:// repository (~200 templates, ~4 GB working copy).

How it works

  • Routing by URL scheme. svn:// and svn+ssh:// repositories are served by a new SvnClient that shells out to the svn binary (no maintained Go svn library), the way CmdGitClient shells out to git. No setting, no schema change, no API change: git and Subversion repositories live on one server. CreateDefaultGitClient keeps its signature and returns a small client that dispatches per call on the repository type (db_lib/repositoryTypeClient.go), so no call site changes.
  • Branch = path. The repository URL is the repository root and the branch is a path under it (trunk, branches/x, tags/y). Templates and tasks select an svn branch exactly like a git branch (template/task overrides, branch dropdown, playbook browser), and the existing ValidateGitBranch validates it (rejects .., leading - or /…). GetRemoteBranches lists trunk, branches/* and tags/*.
  • Commit hash = last changed revision of the branch path, so "run on new commit" schedules do not fire on commits elsewhere in the repository. Re-running a task at its commit runs svn update -r N. The commit hash of a new task is validated by the type of the template's repository (Repository.ValidateCommitRef): pkg/git is untouched; svn validators live in a new pkg/svn, mirroring pkg/git.

Credentials and security

  • Login/password access key: the password goes through --password-from-stdin (never on the command line, visible in ps), with --non-interactive --no-auth-cache.
  • svn+ssh://: the repository's SSH key is loaded in Semaphore's ssh-agent and SVN_SSH gets the same ssh command as GIT_SSH_COMMAND (host key checking, project host configs).
  • The branch is re-validated in the client (the playbook browser takes it from the query string), URLs come after --, and a trailing @ keeps an @ in a path from being read as a peg revision. Revisions are digits only.
  • svn runs with LC_CTYPE=C.UTF-8 unless a locale is configured; without one it wrote its messages in a legacy encoding and refuses non-ASCII file names on Linux.
  • A failed svn command reports the end of svn's stderr (userinfo of quoted URLs removed) instead of a bare exit status 1.

Working copies: one per template, as for git

Each template checks its branch out in its own working copy (repository_<id>_template_<id>_<branch>_<hash>), exactly like a git working tree:

  • before each task it is restored in place, then updated: svn revert -R . (local modifications; svn update would merge into them and report a conflict as success), then svn cleanup --remove-unversioned --remove-ignored . (files a task left behind, scheduled additions, ignored files), then svn update. Unlike git pull, untracked files are not kept;
  • it is checked out again when it points to another URL (repository edits clear the cache of one server only; a runner may hold the old one), or when svn cannot restore or update it;
  • nothing is shared across templates, so a task of one template cannot change or leave files in another template's working copy.

The playbook picker browses an svn branch exactly like a git one: a scratch checkout (CloneOrPull), listed by FindRepositoryFiles, which skips .svn as it skips .git.

Earlier revisions of this branch shared one working copy per repository branch (then per-template trees of hard links, after the review) for a 4 GB repository. That repository is now under 100 MB; the branch was rebased on develop without that round trip and follows the git model, which is simpler and raises none of the cross-template concerns.

Commits

Kept separate so they can be reviewed, dropped or split out:

  1. feat(repository): add Subversion repository support: client, routing, validation, UI (repository form accepts svn/svn+ssh), CI installs subversion.
  2. chore(docker): install subversion in server, runner and job images: without it the feature is unavailable in the official images.
  3. fix(svn) ×4: found while testing on a real stand, in production and in review (URL canonicalization, locale, stderr, restoring the working copy before updating).
  4. test(svn) ×3: scheduled additions, one working copy per template, browsing through a scratch checkout.

The earlier fix(api) commit (decrypt the repository key when browsing branches and playbooks) was dropped on rebase: #4298 fixed the same bug with decryptKey. No API file is changed any more.

Tests

  • db_lib/SvnClient_test.go runs against real repositories created with svnadmin, plus an svnserve protected by a password: checkout/update/re-run at a revision, branches and tags (including @ in a path), commits outside the branch, branch listing, a working copy per template untouched by another template's update or leftovers, restoring local modifications, scheduled additions, unversioned and ignored files before updating, working copy of another URL, browsing through a scratch checkout, option injection, password not on the command line. Skipped when svn is not installed; the dev.yml test job installs it.
  • pkg/svn, db (types, validation, shared directory) and the web URL helper have unit tests.
  • go test ./..., go vet ./..., the web unit tests and eslint pass.
  • Manually: svn:// with login/password, and svn+ssh:// with an SSH key against our production server.

Not included

  • Documentation for the docs site (separate submodule): I can follow up with a "Subversion repositories" page.
  • Subversion over http(s):// is not supported: the URL cannot tell it apart from git.
  • Requires svn ≥ 1.10 (--password-from-stdin).

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds Subversion repository detection and support for client operations, branch and playbook listing, and task commit-reference validation. Repository forms accept svn and svn+ssh URLs. Development and runtime environments install Subversion.

Changes

Subversion repository support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Repository and URL contracts
db/Repository.go, pkg/svn/*, db/Repository_test.go, web/src/components/RepositoryForm.vue, web/src/lib/repositoryUrl.js, web/tests/unit/lib/repositoryUrl.spec.js
Repository types distinguish SVN and SVN-over-SSH URLs. Revision validation uses numeric revisions for SVN and commit hashes for Git. The repository form and URL helper recognize the SVN schemes.

db_lib/SvnClient.go, db_lib/repositoryTypeClient.go, db_lib/GitClientFactory.go, db_lib/PlaybookFiles.go, db_lib/SvnClient_test.go, .github/workflows/dev.yml, deployment/docker/*/Dockerfile
The client runs SVN operations for Subversion repositories, discovers branches, and lists playbooks without checkout. Client tests cover these operations and authentication. Development and runtime images install Subversion.
Repository APIs and task validation
api/projects/repository.go, db/Task.go, services/tasks/TaskPool.go, db/playbook_path_test.go, pkg/git_branch_test.go
Repository endpoints decrypt SSH keys and use direct Subversion playbook listing. Task creation loads the repository and passes it to validation, which validates commit references by repository type.

Concurrent tasks using the same SVN checkout may encounter missing or changing files during execution. Resolve or explicitly accept this risk before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a818b

The integration preserves existing project permissions and branch-override controls. However, a successful Subversion process does not necessarily mean the working copy is conflict-free, so reused workspaces may execute retained files rather than the intended revision. Production protection for plain Subversion connections also remains unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new SVN client equates successful process completion with a usable revision-selected working copy. CanBePulled accepts unversioned files; one can obstruct a path subsequently added by an update. SVN can report conflicts without failing the process, and neither Pull nor Checkout verifies the resulting status. The task consumer can consequently continue with retained or conflicted content instead of taking its remove-and-reclone recovery path. This threatens executable-source integrity for the affected template and branch. It requires an obstructing file in that working copy; cross-project exploitation has not been demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The retained source-integrity concern initially affects the reused working copy for a repository, template, and effective branch. A retained executable file would run with that task's existing authority, potentially affecting its configured target systems. No independent cross-project access or new privilege grant was demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An obstructing unversioned file can pass the pre-update eligibility check. If an SVN update then reports a conflict while returning success, the consumer skips recreation and proceeds toward task execution. The concern is conditional and has not been reproduced; the supplied security assessment contains no verified findings.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Repository browsing resolves the repository within the authorized project and retains branch validation. svn+ssh reuses Git's SSH agent and configured host-verification mechanism. Plain svn:// has no equivalent SSH protection in the client; actual server authentication and confidentiality depend on deployment configuration not provided here. Existing plain-HTTP Git credential exposure predates this PR and is not treated as a newly introduced vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Scheduled additions and reported modifications are rejected before reuse, causing the task consumer to remove and recreate the working copy. This counters the specific allegation that a scheduled addition is reverted into a surviving unversioned file: the inspected synchronization path performs removal and clone, not SVN revert.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish an SVN-specific postcondition before task execution: verify that update and revision checkout leave an acceptable, conflict-free working copy, and fail or recreate it when that condition is not met. Validate the recovery contract against unversioned obstructions and interrupted updates.

Comment thread db_lib/SvnClient.go
Repositories with an svn:// or svn+ssh:// URL are served by a new
SvnClient that shells out to the svn binary. git and Subversion
repositories live on one server: the client is chosen per call from
the repository URL, with no setting and no schema change.

- The URL is the repository root and the branch is a path under it
(trunk, branches/x, tags/y), so templates and tasks select an svn
branch the way they select a git branch
- The last revision that changed the branch path stands in for the
commit hash; a task re-run checks out that revision
- Route svn repositories in db_lib/repositoryTypeClient.go behind the
  unchanged CreateDefaultGitClient
- Add pkg/svn validators, mirroring pkg/git; validate a task commit
hash by the type of the template repository
- Pass the password on stdin, never as an argument; use
  --no-auth-cache and --non-interactive; svn+ssh reuses the ssh
command, agent and host configs of git
- Accept svn and svn+ssh URLs in the repository form
- Install subversion in the CI test job
Subversion repositories need the svn binary (1.10 or later for
--password-from-stdin) wherever repositories are checked out.
svn prints the URL of a working copy canonicalized: scheme and host in
lower case, without the default svnserve port 3690, percent-encoded and
without a trailing slash. Compared verbatim, svn://host:3690/repo never
matched, and every task checked the repository out again instead of
updating it.
Commands get an environment without a locale. svn then wrote its
translated messages in a legacy encoding, which the task log showed as
replacement characters ("Mise jour"), and on Linux it refuses to
check out a file whose name is not ASCII. Set LC_CTYPE=C.UTF-8 unless
LC_ALL, LC_CTYPE or LANG is configured.
A failed svn command returned its exit status alone, and the repository
API, whose logger discards command output, logged "exit status 1" for
every svn+ssh connection, path or credential problem. Add the end of
svn's stderr to the error, with the userinfo of quoted URLs removed.
svn revert would unschedule a scheduled addition and leave its file
behind. CanBePulled sees it in svn status and the working copy of the
template is checked out again instead; cover that case.
svn status --quiet omits unversioned and ignored files, so a playbook or
role a task generated in the working copy was kept by the update and could
be picked up by the next task of the template.

Pull now reverts local changes, then removes unversioned and ignored
files with svn cleanup --remove-unversioned --remove-ignored, then
updates. Reverting first also unschedules additions, whose files the
cleanup then removes. Leftovers are removed in place instead of checking
the working copy out again; a working copy svn cannot revert or clean
makes Pull fail and is checked out again by the caller. Unlike git pull,
untracked files are not kept.
Nothing a task of one template does in its working copy, nor another
template's update, reaches the working copy of another template.
The playbook picker checks the branch out in a scratch directory and
lists it with FindRepositoryFiles, which skips the .svn directory as it
skips .git.
